You will only be able to remove your key when the ignition is turned to LOCK. To restart when you’re already moving, use NEUTRAL (N) only. Notice: Do not try to shift to PARK (P) if your vehicle is moving. This feature is designed for shorter drivers, since the pedals can not move farther away from the standard position, but can move toward the driver for better pedal reach. CAUTION: Plugging the cord into an ungrounded outlet could cause an electrical shock. Your vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission and features an electronic shift position indicator within the instrument panel cluster. This display must be powered anytime the shift lever is capable of being moved out of PARK (P). Notice: Shifting to REVERSE (R) while your vehicle is moving forward could damage the transmission. The repairs would not be covered by your warranty. Shift to REVERSE (R) only after your vehicle is stopped. You can use SECOND (2) on hills. It can help control your speed as you go down steep mountain roads, but then you would also want to use your brakes off and on. If you manually select SECOND (2) in a light duty automatic transmission, the transmission will drive in second gear. You or someone else could be seriously injured. Be sure to set the parking brake before placing the transfer case in NEUTRAL. You may never need this setting. It sends maximum power to all four wheels. You might choose 4LO if you are driving off-road in deep sand, deep mud, deep snow and climbing or descending steep hills. This is like four-wheel drive, but there is no separate lever or switch to engage or disengage the front axle. It is fully automatic, and adjust itself as needed for road conditions. You or someone else could be seriously injured. Be sure to set the parking brake before placing the transfer case in NEUTRAL. Push down the parking brake pedal with your left foot.Your vehicle can roll. If you have left the engine running, the vehicle can move suddenly. If you can leave your vehicle with the ignition key in your hand, your vehicle is in PARK (P). Do not park over papers, leaves, dry grass or other things that can burn. 2-40 Engine Exhaust CAUTION: Engine exhaust can kill. It contains the gas carbon monoxide (CO), which you can not see or smell. But if you ever have to, here are some things to know. CAUTION: Idling the engine with the climate control system off could allow dangerous exhaust into your vehicle. Push the tab away from you for normal daytime operation.Such interference may be caused by a magnetic antenna mount, magnetic note pad holder or a similar magnetic item. It will be necessary to adjust the compass to compensate for compass variance if you live outside zone eight. Under certain circumstances, as during a long distance cross-country trip, it will be necessary to adjust for compass variance. If you have this feature the mirror will display the word ON, or an airbag symbol in Canada, when the passenger air bag is enabled. Move the selector switch located above the control pad to the left or right to choose the mirror you want to adjust, then press the dots located on the four-way control pad to adjust the mirror. The mirrors may also include a memory function which works in conjunction with the memory seats. The vehicle’s mirrors are capable of performing the curb view assist mirror function.Refer to “Erasing HomeLink or, for assistance, contact HomeLink www.homelink.com or by calling 1-800-355-3515. Locate the “Learn” or “Smart” button. This can usually be found where the hanging antenna wire is attached to the motor-head unit. 7. Firmly press and release the “Learn” or “Smart” button. To open the utility compartment, press in on the release latch and swing the compartment door open. To open the Suburban compartment, pull the latch to access. To open or close your sunroof, the ignition or RAP needs to be active. See “Retained Accessory Power” (RAP), under Starting and Operating Your Vehicle. Press and release the rear side of the button located in the front overhead console to express-open the glass panel and sunshade. These buttons are used to program and recall memory settings for the driver’s seat, throttle and brake pedals, both the driver’s and passenger’s outside mirror, and the radio station presets. The numbers on the back of the transmitters, 1 or 2, correspond to the numbers on the memory controls. See “Dome Lamps” under Interior Lamps on page 3-19. B. Exterior Lamp Controls. See Four-Wheel Drive on page 2-28. You could be startled and even lose control. Keep the cruise control switch off until you want to use cruise control. Press the set button at the end of the lever, then release the button and the accelerator pedal. You’ll now cruise at the higher speed. Turn the control clockwise to operate the lamps. The exterior lamp control has four positions: (Off): Turning the control to this position turns off the Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) and the automatic headlamps. The radio lights will also be dim. Your vehicle is equipped with a light sensor located on the top of the instrument panel in the defroster grille. To disable the chime, turn the light off then back on. The fog lamp button is located on the left side of the instrument panel. Press the button to turn the fog lamps on. This switch is located on the center of the instrument panel near the comfort controls. The thumbwheel for this feature is located next to the headlamp control. Turn the thumbwheel up to adjust the instrument panel lights. Turn the thumbwheel up to return the radio display to full brightness when the headlamps or parking lamps are on. Your vehicle may also have reading lamps in other locations. To turn the lamps on or off, press the button located next to the lamp.Your vehicle may have two accessory power outlets, or may have one accessory power outlet located near the cigarette lighter, if equipped.To turn the fan off, turn the knob to the off position. (Off): If the fan is off, outside air will still enter the vehicle, and will be directed based on the position of the mode knob. A little air is directed toward the windshield and the side window vents. This can be minimized if the climate control system is used properly. There are two modes to choose from to clear fog or frost from your windshield. Move the louvers up or down. You can select different climate control settings for the driver and passengers. Use the steps below to place the entire system in automatic mode: 1. Press the AUTO button. When AUTO is selected, the display will change to show the current driver’s set temperature, delivery mode and fan speed. Press the up arrow to increase fan speed and the down arrow to decrease fan speed. To clear the fog, select either defog or front defrost.Use the defog mode to clear the windows of fog or moisture. Use the front defrost button to defrost the front windshield. (Defog): Use this setting to clear the windows of fog or moisture. Move the louvers up or down. One fan speed selector is located in the overhead console and the other is located in the headliner above the second row seats. One control is located in the overhead console and the other is located in the headliner above the second row seats. The system can be controlled from the front controls as well as the rear controls. Fan Knob The fan knob on the left side of the control panel adjusts the fan speed. The climate control has an overhead control near the driver and a control on the back of the center console. The driver overhead control fan knob must be set to the AUX position.The pictures will help you locate them. Warning lights and gages can signal that something is wrong before it becomes serious enough to cause an expensive repair or replacement. Canada and Light Duty Transmission Clusters similar. Your instrument cluster is designed to let you know at a glance how your vehicle is running. You’ll know how fast you’re going, about how much fuel you have and many other things you’ll need to know to drive safely and economically. Your odometer shows how far your vehicle has been driven, in either miles (used in the United States) or kilometers (used in Canada). Trip Odometer The trip odometer can tell you how far your vehicle has been driven since you last set the trip odometer to. The system checks the air bag’s electrical system for malfunctions. The light tells you if there is an electrical problem. The battery display will also stay on while the key is in RUN until the engine is started. If the light stays on after starting the engine it could indicate a problem with the generator drive belt, or some other charging system problem. Have the vehicle serviced as soon as possible.If the light stays on, or comes on when you’re driving, your vehicle needs service. This is normal operation. To turn the system back on, move the shift lever back to a position other than FIRST (1);. This could lead to costly repairs that would not be covered by your warranty. Do not drive your vehicle while the transmission temperature gage reading is above normal. If so, be sure to fuel your vehicle with quality fuel. See Gasoline Octane on page 5-4. Poor fuel quality will cause your engine not to run as efficiently as designed.Canadian vehicles indicate pressure in kPa (kilopascals). Oil pressure may vary with engine speed, outside temperature and oil viscosity, but readings above the low pressure zone indicate the normal operating range. When the fuel tank is low the FUEL LEVEL LOW message will appear. The DIC can display information such as the trip odometer, fuel economy and personalization features. A (Trip Information): This button will display the odometer, personal trip odometer, business trip odometer, hourmeter, annual log and the timer. These buttons are trip information, fuel information, personalization and select. The button functions are detailed in the following.The annual log shows the mileage accumulated since it was last reset.
