But it also plays a hidden role in the style guides of public, private and not-for-profit organisations across Australia: filling in the blanks in house style guides; answering questions that even the most comprehensive style guide might not think to cover; and helping settle many a dispute about hyphenation, quote marks and list formatting. But as The Guardian also points out: “It’s worth noting this isn’t the final version, but a public beta. Others may wish to update their house style to align with the new national standard. Government agencies in particular may need to overhaul their house style guides, especially those that refer directly to the outdated 2002 Style manual. We’ll be ready either way. As for the emotional aspect, we know it’s the human condition to be wary of change, and it’s easy to get attached to your favourite punctuation rules. But we’ve been wishing for this update for so long that we’re hardly going to look a gift horse in the mouth. The Style manual (6th edition, 2002) is dead; long live the Style Manual. Verified purchase: No 1 out of 5 stars by 7811susie 11 Mar, 2014 Sadly disappointing. I regret spending the fairly large amount of money. I bought the style manual to ensure I was using current best practice in my written material. I was disappointed because the writing was not clear and concise, and that to my mind casts a doubt on all the writer's pronouncements on matters of style in writing. Also, the volume appears to have been designed on-screen without consideration of how the layout and design would appear in a paper book. It's messy. I got the feeling it was produced to fulfil some contract or obligation and not to present a coherent and useful reference tool. It seemed perfunctory and amateurish. There appears to be no other Australian style manual to compare it with, unfortunately. All Rights Reserved. User Agreement, Privacy, Cookies and AdChoice Norton Secured - powered by Verisign.
