Personally, I've never been to Romania (the wife has), but wanted to get a lay of the land and learn what there is to see before we take the family (once Americans are once again welcomed overseas). If history is your thing (it is one of mine), there is also a brief history of the area starting on page 374. Romania's history is very interesting, beginning with pre-Roman tribes, teetering on the fulcrum of Eastern and Western influences, and finally emerging from Communist rule within the last 40 years. Very much looking forward to the trip and taking this book (along with some holy water and a wooden stake) with me!Most travel books I have bought in the past have given some information on synagogues or Jewish life in the major cities, while this one basically mentions nothing. I have got more guidance and facts on tours by doing my own research online. Would not have wasted the money buying this book if I had seen it in a book store, but everything is bought online today!Unfortunately there was none available for Romania, so I chose The Rough Guide. It includes very few pictures and the maps are insufficient to facilitate any planning. I am going to buy a different guide book and hope for the best.Helped us to select what we wanted to see and do.Most was already available online.A lot of hidden gems and hints. I definitely recommend this guide for your trip in Romania!Good content though. Please try again. Please try again. Please try again. Please try your request again later. The country’s mountain scenery, its great diversity of wildlife and cultures, and a way of life that at times seems little changed since the Middle Ages, leave few who visit unaffected.http://www.thediethub.in/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/16283ec805dfa1---buck-research-manual-1996.pdfIn Transylvania, in addition to ethnic Romanians, one and a half million Magyars and around the same number of Rroma (Gypsies) follow their own path, while dwindling numbers of Transylvanian Germans (Saxons) reside around the fortified towns and churches built by their ancestors. Along the coast, in the Delta and in the Banat, there’s a rich mixture of Russians, Ukrainians, Serbs, Slovaks, Bulgars, Gypsies, Turks and Tatars. Two decades of dictatorial rule by Nicolae Ceausescu brought Romania to the brink of ruin, with economic collapse and repression by the feared Securitate bringing about a stark deterioration in living standards. Any exploration of rural villages will be rewarding, with sights as diverse as the log houses in Oltenia, Delta villages built of reeds, and the magnificent wooden churches, with their sky-scraping Gothic steeples, of Maramures, not to mention the country’s more traditional churches, which reflect a history of competing communities and faiths. Romania also offers some of the most unspoiled wilderness on the continent, from the majestic peaks of the Carpathian mountains and the verdant, rolling hills of Bucovina to the extraordinary wetlands of the Danube Delta. Where to go in Romania The first point of arrival for many visitors is the capital, Bucharest. In recent years, the gastronomic scene has improved beyond recognition, while a wave of artisan coffee joints has revitalized the city’s cafe culture. North and west of here, the great Magyar cities of Targu Mures, Cluj and Oradea have retained a wealth of medieval architecture, as well as impressive Baroque and Secession buildings. In the southwest, near the Serbian border, is hugely enjoyable Timisoara, source of the 1989 revolution. The best of Romania, though, is its countryside, and in particular the wonderful mountains. The wild Carpathians, forming the frontier between Transylvania and, to the east and south, Moldavia and Wallachia, shelter bears, stags, chamois and eagles.cnsilos.com/d/files/compaq-presario-f700-service-manual.pdf The Bucegi, Fagaras and Retezat ranges and the Padis plateau, meanwhile, offer some of the most spectacular hiking opportunities in Europe. The Black Sea coast is full of brash resorts, notably Mamaia, but it does have its charms, not least the old port of Constanta. Just north of here, the Danube Delta is set apart from the rest of the country; here life has hardly changed for centuries and boats are the only way to reach many settlements. During spring and autumn, hundreds of species of birds migrate through this area or come to breed. While not quite as remote, the villages of Maramures, bordering Ukraine in the north, retain a medieval feel with their fabulous wooden churches. Close by, sprinkled amid the soft, rolling hills of Bucovina, are the wonderful painted monasteries, whose religious frescoes are among the most outstanding in Europe. Discover more places in Romania Its capital, Bucharest, lies in the far south of the country on the plains of Wallachia, located between the Danube and the mountainous region of Transylvania to the north. Spas Romania boasts one third of all Europe’s mineral springs, and around 160 spa resorts ( baile ), many of which were made fashionable by the Habsburgs during the nineteenth century. Spa holidays are tremendously popular, the theory being that you stay in a resort for about eighteen days, following a prescribed course of treatment, and ideally return regularly over the next few years. However, if you can get cheap accommodation, a spa can also make a good base for a one-off holiday. In any case, it’s worth bearing in mind that even the smallest spas have campsites and restaurants. The basic treatment naturally involves drinking the waters, which come in an amazing variety: alkaline, chlorinated, carbogaseous, and sodium-, iodine-, magnesium-, sulphate- or iron-bearing. In addition, you can bathe in hot springs or sapropelic muds, breathe in foul fumes at mofettes, or indulge in a new generation of complementary therapies such as ultrasound and aerosol treatment, ultraviolet light baths, acupuncture and electrotherapy. The spas all have their own areas of specialization: Sovata is the best place for gynaecological problems; Covasna, Vatra Dornei and Buzias deal with cardiovascular complaints; Calimanesti-Caciulata, Slanic Moldova, Sangeorz-Bai and Baile Olanesti with digestion; and others (notably Baile Herculane and Baile Felix) with a range of locomotive and rheumatic ailments. Mountain resorts such as Sinaia, Baile Tusnad and Moneasa treat nervous complaints with fresh air, which has an ideal balance of ozone and ions. I did look at the hard copy SE Asia regional guides from each publisher but they lacked the detail of the individual country guides. Any thoughts as to usability etc. We will be taking iPads and would prefer to use tjo sees or would a Kindle be better and worth the additional cost. Any thoughts or opinions would be much appreciated. There isn't really any reason to get a Kindle or Nook in addition to the Ipad - Ipads are difficult to read outside and the battery life isn't as good as with a dedicated reader, but otherwise they are great for books. The issue that I have found with travel guide books on any device (Kindle, Ipad, etc.) is the inability to just thumb through and flip back and forth between pages. But since you will be visiting so many places, you can probably live with this limitation in exchange for not having to carry extra paper around with you.The ease of flipping through and earmarking and flagging pages plus the ease of scribbling notes in the margins makes deadtree my preferred format for travel guides.Easier to find what you want and just easier to read for me. DH has them in ePub form on his Samsung tablet. I tried them in PDF format on mine. Don't much care for either format but they were a cheap Groupon deal.On previous long trips to Asia I have taken the paper guides for the first two or three countries, and then bought - usually cheap, second-hand - books for other countries in Asia. KSR in BKK used to be good for that, as were Hanoi and Phnom Penh. I have always been a big fan of Lonely Planet but think they have been falling off a bit lately. I have found Moon quite good for South America, haven't tried them for Asia. Do you have an itinerary yet. Looking forward to the TR!Like most of you it seems, I too prefer paper to electronic. I downloaded the Rough Guide SE Asia eBook a few days ago just to see how i got on. Whilst it lacks any real detail. One feature i do like is the ability to write the electronic equivalent notes in the margins. After sparkchasers comment re Kindle i tried one out at a local store and can see why people love them for reading novels etc. After some, not inconsiderable, deliberation, I think I will adopt Thursdaysd's approach and just pick up guidebooks as we go along. I was given a Fodors Thailand guide by Fodors which also has small sections on Cambodia and Thailand so that will cover the first couple of months. I am also finding www.travelfish.org exceptionally helpful in the planning process so will no doubt save some of their stuff for offline reading and printing. I have yet to nail down the itinerary. I have managed to book some bargain flights to Singapore in November and from there will head straight to KL and Malaysia, work our way up through Thailand, into Laos and Cambodia and then Vietnam. All rights reserved.
