This manual pro vides navigation in struc tions according to the default display setting s. If you select other s ettings, navigation may b e different. Unless otherwise specified, all instruct ions in this manual assume you are starting from the Home screen and using the available keys. Note: Instructions in this manual are based on default settings, and may vary from your device, de pending on the software version on your device, and any changes to the device’s Settings. Unless stated otherwise, instru ctions in this User Manual start with the device unlocked, at th e Home screen. All screen images in this manual are simulated. Actual dis plays may vary, depending on the software version of your phone and any changes to the devic e’s Settings. These are intended to point out impor tant information, share quick methods for activati ng features, to define terms, and more. T ext Con ventions The following terms and icons appear in this manual to describe the steps and procedures for using your phone: highlight Use the Navigation key ( ) to move a highlighting effect onto a menu item or screen item of interest.Example: Settings ? Personalize ? Language. Release Latch SIM Card Over view Important. Before removing or replacing the SIM card, make sure the phone is switched of f. T o turn the phone of f, press the key. The SIM card is loaded with your subscription det ails such as your telephone number, PIN, available opt ional services, and many other features. Important! The SIM card and it s information can be easily damaged by scratching or bending, so be careful when handling, inserting, or removing the card. Keep all SI M cards out of reach of small children. T o remove the SIM card: 1. Remove the battery cover and batte ry. 2. Carefully place your fingernail into the end of the SIM slot and push the card s lightly out. 3. Charging the Batter y Y our phone is powered by a rechar geable Li-ion batt ery. A travel adapter for charging the battery is included with your phone. Use only approved batterie s and chargers. Ask your local Samsung dealer for further details. Y ou can use the phone while the battery is charging, but the phone will require additional charging time. Note: Y ou must fully charge the battery befo re using your phone for the first time. A discharged battery requ ires 4 hours to fully rech arge. 1. With the battery insta lled, open the plastic cover of the interface jack on the right side of the phone and plug the travel adapte r connector into the jack. Important! V erify th e handset battery is properly installed before connecting the travel ad apter. If the battery is not properly installed and the travel adapter is con nected, the handset continuously power cy cles and prevents proper operation. If you connect the charger incorrectly, you risk damaging the access ory port and voiding the phone warranty. Wa rning! If the adapter power plug is in stalled incorrectly, damage to the accessory port occurs and voids the phone warranty. 2. Plug the adapter power plug into a standard AC wall outle t. 3. When charging is f inished, unplu g the adapter power plug from the AC wall outlet, then disco nnect the travel adapter connector from the phone. Correct Incorrect Low Ba tter y Indicator When the battery is weak with only a few min utes of talk time remaining, a warning tone sound s and the “Battery low” message repeats at regular intervals on the display. In this condition, your phone conserves it s remaining battery power by dimming the screen. When the battery lev el becomes too low, the phone automatically turns off. T ur ning the Phone On or Of f T o turn the phone on: 1. V oice Mail V oicemail allows callers to leave voice messages that can be retrieved any time. Setting Up Y our V oicemail 1. In Idle mode, press and hold the key or dial your own mobile number to dial V oicemail. 2. When connected, follow the voice prompts from the voice mail center. Listening to V oicemail 3. In standby mode, pres s and hold or dial your own mobile number to dial V oicemail. After connecting, you will hear your voice greeting. Y ou are prompt ed to enter your password. Send key: Allows you to place or receive a call. In standby mode, press the key once to access the Call history log. Press and hold this key briefly t o power your phone On or Off. While in the main menu, it returns the phon e to standby mode. Press to reje ct an incoming call. 12. Icons T ext and Soft key functions graphics The profile is editable, and the displaye d icons may vary a ccording to the s ettings. T o edit Sound Profile settings, press Menu. Settings ? Personali ze ? Sound profiles. Appears when you are communicating with the network using a 3G connect ion. Appears when you rece ive a new text message o r a new pic ture m essage. Appears when you receive a n ew voicemail message. Appears when you set an alarm on your phone. Appears when a call is in progress. Appears when there is no network coverage availab le. When you are out of the service area, you cannot make or receive voice calls. Shows the level of your batt ery. The more bars you see, the more power you have remaining. The backlight dims or turns of f when no key is pressed within a given period of time. These functions are arranged in menus and sub-menus. Each menu and sub-menu a llows you to view and alter the settings of a particular function. In some functions, you may be asked for a pas sword or PIN. Enter the code and press the key. When you access a list of optio ns, your phone highlights t he currently active option. Appears when the Silent profile is set. In Silent mode, your phone displays informa tion, but the speaker is muted. Appears when the sound profile is set to Vibration. In Vibratio n mode, your phone displays information and vibrates, but the speaker is muted. Options During a Call Y our phone provides a number of control functions that you can use during a call. Adjusting the Call V olume Adjust the speaker volume du ring a call by pressing the Up and Down Navigation keys. Press the Up Navigation key to increase the volume level and press the Down Naviga tion key to decrease the volume level. Putting a Call on Hold Y ou can place the current call on hold whenev er you want. Y ou can also make another call while you have a call in progre ss if your network supports this service. T o put a call on hold: 1. While on a call, press ( Options ). Hold ? OK to place your call on hold. Making a new call w hile y ou hav e a call in pro gress 1. While on a call, press ( Options ) ? Hold ? OK. 2. During an act ive call, press ( Spkr on ) to toggle the speakerphone on, ( Spkr off ) to toggle the speakerphone off.The DTMF tones are the to nes used in phones for tone dialing, sounding when you press the numbe r keys. Muting or Sending K eypad T ones These options allow you to turn t he key tones off or on. If the Mute keys option is selected, it allows you to p ress keys without hearing key tones during a call. Note: T o communicate w ith answering machines or comp uterized telephone systems, th e Send keys option must be selected. T o activate the Call waiting fe ature: 1. From the Idle screen, p ress Menu. Settings ? Call settings Call waiting. Wait for t he system to verify the current status. 2. If not already activated, press ( Options ) ? Activate. T o answer a call while you have a call in progress: 1. While on a call, press or press ( Accept ) to answer a new incoming call. The previous caller is automatically put on hold when you answer the new incoming call. 2. T o switch betwe en the two calls, press ( Options ) ? Swap ? OK. Swap places t he current call on hold and then activates the previous call. T o end a call on hold: 1. While on a call, press ( Options ), then sel ect End. 2. Select Held Call. Y ou can continue with the remainin g call. 3. Press to end the remaining active call. If this service is supported by the netwo rk, and the SIM has the feature enabled, all calls c an be joined together. Y ou are notified of an incoming call by a call waiting to ne. T o activate the call waiting feature, see “Call W aiting ” on page 33. 1. Make a call by either dialin g a ne w number and pressing or receiving an incoming call and press ( Accept ). 2. Wait for the new caller to answer. The first call is aut omatically put on hold. 3. Press ( Options ) ? In Idle mode, press and hold until the phone vibrates and the “Vibration prof ile on” message appears on screen. The Vibratio n mode icon is displayed on the screen. Fo r more information, refer to “Sound Profiles” on page 76. In Vibration mode, your phon e speake rs are muted. An incoming call will cause the phone to vibrate and light up. T o exit and reactivate the previ ous sound settings, press and hold again until the previous Sound Prof ile is res tored. The Vibration mode icon is no longer displayed. Y our menu options are controlled by the SI M provided by your service provider. Use the Navigat ion keys to scroll throug h menus and sub-menus or use the shortc ut keys. Accessing Menus 1. From the Idle screen, press ( Menu ) to access Menu mode. 2. Use the Navigation keys to scroll to a main menu. Press the Select soft key or the key to enter t he menu. 3. If the menu contains sub-menu s, highlight your menu selection and press th e Select soft key or. 4. T o return to the previous menu level, pres s the Back soft key. 5. T o exit the menu without chang ing the settings, press. In Menu mode, Main Menus can be accessed by pressing the number k eys (1 to 9) corresponding to t heir location on the screen. Exampl e: Accessing the Bookmarks menu. 1. Press the Menu s oft key. 2. Press for Brows er. 3. Press for Bookma rks. Dialing a Number from the Contact List Once you have stored phone numbers in the Contact List, you can dial them easily by opening your Contacts list then highlight ing the number you wish to call and pressing ( Options ) ? Call. Finding a Contact List Entr y 1. From the Idle screen, press ( Menu ), then select Con tacts ? Contacts. 2. Enter the firs t few letters of the name. The Contacts entries are listed, starting with the first entry matching your input. 3. Press the Up or Down Navigation k ey until the entry you want is highlighted. 4. Press or ( Options ). Call to dial the number. Save to contacts ? New. 2. Select the category type: Mobile, Home, Work or Others. Groups Y ou can elect to assign your contacts to a group or category, such as Family, Friends, or Work. Y ou can edit, delete or create new groups to manage your contact s. T o add one or more contacts to an existing group: 1. From the Idle screen, press ( Menu ), then select Con tacts ? Groups. 2. Select a group. 3. Press Options ? Add member. 4. Highlight a contact name and press to add a checkmark. Repeat until all desired names hav e been selected. 5. Press ( Add ). T o create a new group: 1. From the Idle screen, press ( Menu ), then select Con tacts ? Groups. 2. Press Options ? Add ne w group. 3. Enter a name for the group and press ( Save ). The first speed dial number is reserved for voicemail. 1. From the Idle screen, press ( Menu ). Contacts ? Speed dial. Select an empty position in your speed dial list. 2. P ress ( Assign ) soft key. 3. When your Contact Lis t displays, highlight the contac t you wish to assign to that position an d press ( Select ). T o quickly call a contact from th e Idle screen, press and hold the number assigned in the Speed Dial List. Contacts ? Service number to view your service numbers. This section also describes the features and functionality associat ed with messaging. Creating a New T ext Message 1. From the Idle sc reen, press ( Menu ). Messaging ? Create message to ac cess the SMS message window. Choose fr om: T ext te mplates, T ex t emoticons, Contact s or Bookmarks. Choo se either Ye s or No. 6. When you completed your message, press ( Send ) to send your message. The message is changed to a picture message and the Create Message sc reen reappears with a paperclip ic on beside the title to indicate a file h as been attached. 6. When you are finished wit h your message, you can press (Options) to make changes, additions, or edits such as adding a Name card or other attachments; modify send settings; and preview your messag e. 7. Press (Send) to sen d your message. Using Message Options Message options at the In box level differ according to the messa ge type, what you have done with the message, and whether you are viewing the message. With a message entry highlighted from within th e Messages list, press (Options) to access the fo llowing options: Press the Left or Right Nav igation keys to access t he other available screens: Sentbox, Draft s, My folders and T emplates. Message inbo x The Inbox mess age box stores copies of messages you received. Sentbo x The Sentbox message box st ores copies of messages you sent. Draf ts The Drafts message box stores unsen t messages that you want to edit or send at a later time. My folders My folders lets you create addi tional message folders where messages can be stored. Te m p l a t e s T emplates are available for creat ing messages and can be edited or deleted. Using Message T emplates Y our phone lets you store T ext templates and Picture message templates that you can retrieve and apply whe n creating a message. Y ou can edit the applied template as needed before sendin g a message. 1. From the Idle screen, press ( Menu ). Messa ging ? Te m p l a t e s ? T ext T emplates or Picture message templates. The template s display. Messaging Settings The Messages se ttings menu allows you to view and modify settings for text messages and multimedia messages. Y ou can set up various options for using messaging servic es. 1. From the Idle sc reen, press ( Menu ).Picture Message 1. From the Idle sc reen, press ( Menu ). Messaging ? Settings ? Messaging settings.Delete by F older The Delete by f older function allo ws you to clear messages you no longer wish to store. Messaging ? Settings ? Memory status. 4. Use your Left or Right Navigation keys to choose an ava ilable category: Y ou can take photographs by using the built-in camera functionality. Using the Camera Using the camera module in your phone, you can take photos of people or events while on the move. Additiona lly, you can send these photos to other people in a Picture message or set a wallpaper or picture ID image. Note: Do not take photos of people without their permissio n. Do not take photos in places where cameras are not allo wed. Do not take photos in places where you may interfere with another person’s privacy. T aking a Photo Y our camera produces photos in JPEG format.Y our photo is saved to the My Downloads.Press to pause the recording or ( Stop ) to stop recording. Y our new video is saved to the My Downloads.Y ou can surf the Web and download ring tones and wallpapers using your phone. When your phone conn ects to the Internet, the serv ice indicator icon ( ) appears in the display. Launching the Browser. Brows er ? Home. Exit the Bro wser ? T o exit the Browser, press. Using the Browser When you use your Browser to access t he Web, some of the keys operate different ly than during a normal phone call.The soft keys change their func tion depending on the ap plication. Using Links Links have several pu rposes, such as jumping t o a different page, to a different site, or even initiati ng a phone call. Links are shown underlined. Y ou can normally press to select a link when it is highlighted. Press once to back up one page. Press a nd hold to go back to home page. Press to clear the last number, letter, or symbol entered.Calendar Options Y ou can add and delete events and set alarms to remind you of your appointments, anniversaries or other events. 1. From the Idle sc reen, press ( Menu ).Organizer ? Calendar. 2. Press ( Options ) ? Create. 3. Select a categor y type for the eve nt. Choose from: Appointment, Anniversary, Holiday, Important, or Private. View an Event 1. T o access your Calendar in Idle mod e, press ( Menu ). Organizer ? Calendar. 2. Use the Navigat ion keys to move through the calendar and highlight a desired date. 3. Open the highlight ed date by pressing. A list of scheduled events appears in the display. 4. Select the desired event. Informat ion for the selected event appears in the display. Alar m Y ou can set alarms t o alert you once, or daily at a specified time. Once set, the alarms are easy to chang e or turn off completely. 1. From the Idle sc reen, press ( Menu ).V oic e r eco gnit io n Nuance V oice Recognition software is a n advanced speech recognition software used to ac tivate a wide variety of functions on your phone. Nuance softw are automa tically voice act ivates (up to 1,000 contacts) for voice dialing and searching. No pre-rec ording or training needed. Sp eak a contact name naturally to dial, and use your voice to look up contacts, la unch applications and na vigate phone menus. 1. T o access voic e recognition in Idle mode, pres s ( Menu ). Organizer ? V oice recognition. 2. At the voice prompt, say a command. Following is a list of available commands. Note: This list of voice command s briefly displays. If multiple numbers exist (i.e. home, work, or other) say the name and the number type (locat ion). The re is no need to speak slowly or with added emphasis. T he voice recognition software has been optimized to understand you r speech in its natural form. If it does not recognize your comman d after a few seconds, a voice prompt asks you to repeat the command. If it does not recognize your command again, the following mes sage displays “Sorry, no match found,” and voice recognition turns off. Y ou must end your curren t V oice Commands call before you can make another call usin g V oice Commands. Y ou can only originat e the first call in a 3-way call using V oice Commands.Organizer ? T asks. 2. Press ( Options ) ? Create. 3. Enter information for your new task, in cluding: Title, Details, Start date, Due date, Alarm, Alar m date, Alar m time, Alarm tone, and Priority. 4. Once complete, press ( Save ) to store the new ta sk. Memo T o create a new Memo: 1. From the Idle sc reen, press ( Menu ). Organizer ? Memo. 2. Press ( Options ) ? Create. 3.
