First, a secular and indi vidua list ic late twentieth century culture is like ly to discount the possibil ity of a meani ngfu l rel ationshi p between the li vin g and the dead, havi ng abandoned those religi ous bel iefs and ritual s which articulate such relationsh ips i n other societies (Yamamoto et al, 1969; 1970; Bloch, 1971; Dan forth, 1982; Walter, 1991; Viteb sky, 1993) and in our own society i n past times (Morley, 1971; Rosenb latt, 1983; Geary 1994). In little more than a century, the Victorian cele bration of the inte nse emotion ality of grief and the romantic cult of the dead has given way to a modernist and me dical concern to return the indi vidua l as rapidly as possibl e to effic ient and autonomous function ing (Stroebe et al, 1992). The few studies document ing how bereav ement counsellor s and groups actually operate suggest that they are as concerned as any one else to move their cl ients through grief to become once again effecti vely fu nctioni ng indi vidua ls (Wambac h, 1985; Broadbent, 1990). Second, it must be said that the authors of the classic texts have on the whole not discouraged thi s selecti ve reading of their work. We may say, therefore, that in the classic texts there is a major them e emphas isin g detachm ent achiev ed through the working through of feeli ngs, and a minor theme emph asis ing the continued presence of the dead and a continuou s conversation 2 Because of a largely secular and indi vidu alis t culture, both the authors of these texts and their readers have typ icall y underplay ed or ignored this mi nor theme - creating the cl inic al lore of bereavem ent counsell ing. In this articl e I chall enge thi s convention al wis dom concerni ng the purpose and process of grief, pay ing particular attention to process. I am prompted by the two most signi fic ant berea vements I hav e gone through, neither of whic h seem s to fit the conventiona l wisdom. I therefore use these two losses as case studies. Using a sampl e of just one person and two bereavements m ay seem unsound to quantitatively mind ed readers. I would agree if the cases af firm ed conve ntional wisdom, but one devia nt case that does not fit conventi onal wi sdom ma y tell us more than ni ne hun dred and nin ety ni ne that do.I then relate this autobiographical data to dissident lite rature that over the past decade or so has been chall engi ng conve ntional models of grief. THE PURPOSE OF GRIEF: LIVING WITH THE D EAD My fathe r died in 1985 at the age of 90. The address at his m emoria l serv ice (discus sed in m ore detail in Walter, 1991) was give n by a black Zimb abwean frien d of the fam ily, Kingston. He drew upon his own Shona tradition of li vin g in the presence of the ancestors to suggest that we should keep the spirit of Len Walter ali ve, that we acknowledge hi m as a continuing mem ber of fam il y and vil lage. We are who we are in part because of who he was, iv and we are deny ing reality if we try to leave him entire ly behind. In the West the sense that the deceased is still aliv e is deemed by man y ex perts a temporary but perhaps necess ary il lus ion (Rees, 1971; Parkes, 1986: 79) before attaini ng the ultimate goal of liv ing without the deceased. It is the other way around with the Shona. Straightforward and sim ple burial, not hiding the reality of death, means that they quickly accept that the person has died phy sica lly an d is a necessa ry prel imi nary to the long-term welco ming of the deceased back as one of the ancestors. The dead person is lost and then re-found, rather than clung onto before being ult imatel y rel inqu ished. Here then was a very di ffer ent end for the process of grief. But how in our case was this to be achiev ed. Not through working through feeli ngs, but through talkin g about my fat her. Let my name b e ever the household word it alway s was.’ It proved, for me at least, good advice. This was not some esoteric tribal custom, but a way of grie ving that immed iately rang be lls for us. It was as though Kingston had giv en us permiss ion to retain my dead father and to talk about him. Through this experi ence I becam e interested in the Western way of death, in particular the western way of conceptualisi ng gri ef. As I read the literature I found the 3 Hockey, 1995). But as I dug deeper in the li terature and as the mid 1980s moved into the late 1980s and earl y 1990s I began to sense a revolution i n the mak ing. Find ings that challen ge the basi c paradigm are dism issed as due to faulty equipme nt or poor methodology. But with time the rogue findin gs mount up and beco me more diff icul t to ignore, though ignored they continue to be because so many professiona l reputations have been bui lt on the old paradigm. Then comes the revolut ion. In the late 1980s, precisel y suc h as revolution was a bout to explode in the psychology of grief. There were two brands of revolutionary. The first were not scholars, but certain people who had themse lves been berea ved. Many parents who had lost a chil d could not leave their dead child out of their live s or see future childr en replac ing the dead one. Though this process is described in texts such as Parkes (1986: 88), such women did not alway s fi nd berea vement counse llors va lidat ing such experi ences. Many bereave d parents and widows belo ng to self-hel p groups such as The Compassio nate Friends and The National Association of Widows that keep an arm’s length fro m profession al counse llors, distrust theories and l et their mem bers speak for themsel ves. It was also noted that the longing of som e very e lderly widows to be reunited with the ir spouse in hea ven, pathologised in cl ini cal lore because it gives up hope of new attachments (e.g. Raphael, 1984: 62), is in fa ct - given age, lengt h of marriage, and lack of avai lab ili ty of replacem ent partners - entirely rational. The other revolutionaries were certain academi cs who careful ly summ aris ed the research evide nce and fou nd that much of it did not seem to fit the conventional wisdom. The pattern of grief identi fied by clin ical lore as norm al is, Wortman and Sil ver conc luded, only one of three common patterns.Whil e such practical tasks are bei ng attended to, grief has to be sideli ned. In other words bereavem ent consists of an oscilla tion between con fronting and avoiding grief; nothing but confrontation, or nothing but avoidance, ma y each in thei r own way be unh ealthy. Stroebe et al (1992) and Walter (1994) have identi fied this as a sh ift from a modernism in whic h counsel lors expertly mana ge a predictable process to a more postmodern indiv idua lis ing of loss and a re jection of grand theory. Th is more postmodern vie w can also use cross-cultural data not to justify a unive rsall y normal grief but to demonstrate diversit y. Marwit and Kla ss (1995) recently looked specif ical ly at the objective of withdrawin g emotional ties to the deceased. They asked a samp le of students aged eighteen to fift y four to identif y and write about an important person in their li ves who had died, lookin g in particular at the role (if an y) the deceased currently play ed in their life. As it turned out, no participant had trouble with the concept and many wrote two to three pages. The idea of an active inner represe ntation of a valued deceased indi vidua l see ms to be a concept readily and naturall y avail able to many people.’ (p.292) The researchers found four ki nds of role for the deceased: as a role mo del, as giv ing guidance in speci fic situations, as c larify in g the val ues of the survi vor, and as a valued part of the survivor’s biograph y. It would seem then that these dead live on, Shona sty le, without impair ing the function ing of the l ivi ng. Thi s is consistent with Rub in’s (1984) argument that the resolution of loss is characterised by recoll ection of the deceased becomin g a source of warmth and pl easure, somethin g which can happe n only after the death is accepted. The effect of the revolut ion may be seen in a sm all but signi fic ant sh ift from the first (1983) to the second (1991) edition of Will iam Worden’s textbook Grief Counselli ng and Grief Therapy.
