I was getting 33mpg on the D5 XC90 so quite shocked.I had a V70 before so was used to the small buttons, but I will admit that the buttons are small. Turning off functions like lane warning while driving is a dangerous thing to do as you can easily hit wrong buttons first. Car drives very well in normal auto box and becomes an performance car when you switch to sports mode. I love the safety features and parking sensors, some people moan about them making a noise but to be honest they only make noises if you are driving badly or about to hit something. They can all be turned off so if you don't like them turn them off. I would recommend the car to anyone, or any other Volvo model for that matter. Good to drive and driving position. But sorry to say the engine and clutch are a disaster. The clutch started going soft and the pedal would drop to the floor within eighteen months. The dealership was not 100 helpful, either. Numerous engine problems and the clutch playing up again and the engine is now using oil and water. The car is waiting to go in for repair. A shame as it's a very comfy and decent car apart from the driveline. I have been told that Volvo is now Chinese owned and hope this doesn't spell the end of Volvo reliability. My MD is getting same economy with a discovery. It is powerful enough, and I love the lack of intrusive noise that makes it so easy to just talk to people in the back of the car without raising your voice even at motorway speeds. Slight negative with the bluetooth functionality not being perfect, and as some have mentioned, the economy is a long way off what I expected to achieve. I drive quite conservatively and the best trip average I've ever made (with all conditions favourable) was 52mpg, but we're normally down in the 40-45mpg range, which is just too far off what was anticipated. Oh, and on the comfort, that doesn't seem to apply to anyone sitting in the middle seat on the rear bench, that seems slightly elevated and stiff, and is not a good place for an adult to be (not that they usually are). But then extremely uncomfortable on any other road surface. On open country roads you are forced to slow down to achieve any level of comfort. With the new high efficiency engine, even driving at my most frugal I cannot get above 42 or 43mpg compared to high 50s expected. My previous car was a 2.0 diesel Passat in which I achieved over 58 mpg average over 60,00 miles. I expected the same or similar but this thing just drinks fuel. Reliability No problems so far Performance 2 out of 5 Good performance promised but at the rate this uses fuel I cannot afford to put my foot down. Running Cost 1 out of 5 The most uneconomical 2.0-litre vehicle I have owned in 10 years. This new high efficiency engine appears to be at least 6 (or more) years behind the equivalent engine from VW. My advice: buy a Passat. Poor steering lock and very poor MPG compared with Volvo figures. Reliability 5 out of 5 Reliability good. Performance 5 out of 5 Good. Running Cost 2 out of 5 Poor mpg. Both driveshafts replaced under warranty (a known early XC60 issue), work done without question by main dealer. Running Cost 3 out of 5 Routine service costs are a little high, especially when the minimal amount of work required is taken into consideration. I loathe the garage practice of charging for oil in half litre increments, when the same oil can be purchased at less than halk their price from almost any motor factor. But a string of irritating problems necessitating regular repeat visits (and a round trip of 100 miles) to dealers have convinced me that the volvo marque is not what it's cracked up to be. Some significant disappointments with running costs (actual versus claimed fuel consumption is 25 higher), automatic gearbox previous generation standard. Excellent styling and practicality for family car. A few minor design faults: 1. When driving, the rear fog light switch is hidden by the steering wheel and you have to fumble to press it (I do worry I will open the tailgate pressing the wrong button). 2. I considered the X3 and Q5 as options and preferred the XC60 based upon its styling and equipment level as well as the drive (X3 was an excellent drive too though, while the Q5 was bland but both had reliability issues upon researching - how accurate that is, maybe debatable). The seats are the most comfortable I've ever sat in and the visibility is amongst the best you'll find. Performance is fantastic it really does shift and equally is great around town too, sport mode shows what the 5 cylinder engine can deliver. Fuel economy is as claimed. Excellent to drive. Comfortable ride, smooth transmission,lovely sests, good load carrier, no reason whatsoever to regret my choice. The 17 inch alloys allow a big tyre which means a softer ride.
