It usually is a steel cable with a plastic sleeve. The gear selector over time can stretch or snap and might need replacing. If the cable snaps or the detach from the gear stick or the gearbox there will be no response from the gear selector. The stretched gear shifter cable can cause the driver to be in a different gear than the gear stick or selector appear to indicate. In some cases of a snapped cable the driver might not be able to take the key out of the ignition. Add this item to your watchlist to keep track of it. The gearbox also has a manual gearshift mode. The driver display shows the gear position selected: P, R, N, D or M. During manual gear changing, the gear being used is also shown. Gear positions Park position - P The gearbox is mechanically blocked when the P position is engaged. Select the P position when the car is parked or when starting the engine. The car must be stationary when the park position is selected. To select another gear position when the park position is selected, the brake pedal must be depressed and the ignition position must be II. To park - first apply the parking bake and then select park position. Warning Always use the parking brake when parking on an inclined surface. Engaging a gear or the automatic transmission's P position is not sufficient to hold the car stationary in all situations. Note The gear selector must be in P position to allow the car to be locked and alarmed. Reverse position - R Select position R to reverse. The car must be stationary when reverse position is selected. Neutral position - N No gear is engaged and the engine can be started. Apply the parking brake if the car is stationary with the gear selector in N position. To be able to change from the neutral position to another gear position, the brake pedal must be depressed and the ignition position must be II. Drive position - D D is the normal driving position. Shifting up and down takes place automatically based on the level of acceleration and speed. The car must be stationary when changing gear from R position to D position. Manual gearshift mode - M The manual gearshift mode can be selected at any time while driving. The car engine-brakes when the accelerator pedal is released. The driver display shows which gear is used. Press the gear selector to the side to its end position at D to return to the D position. The gearbox automatically shifts down if the speed decreases to a level lower than appropriate for the selected gear, in order to avoid jerking and stalling. Changing gear Overview of gear lever and shift patterns. Neutral position ( N ) The manual gearbox has six gears; the shifting pattern is shown on the gear lever. Depress the clutch pedal fully during each gear change. Take your foot off the clutch pedal between gear changes. Reverse gear inhibitor The reverse gear inhibitor hinders the possibility of mistakenly attempting to engage reverse gear during normal forward travel. Follow the shifting pattern on the gear lever and start from neutral position before moving it to the R position. Engage reverse gear only when the car is stationary. During parking Warning Always apply the parking brake when parking on a slope - leaving the car in gear is not sufficient to hold the car in all situations. Yes No. A transmission can fail for almost as many reasons as there are parts inside, and often, it’s easier to replace it than repair it. You are not only paying for the new or rebuilt replacement transmission but also for the labor required to remove the old unit then replace it with a new one. A time-consuming operation, this involves disconnecting fluid lines, electrical wiring, engine mounts, exhaust system components, axles or driveshafts and more. A transmission replacement can be performed by a transmission specialist or by a technician at your dealership’s service department. It is always better to avoid having to go this route by explicitly following the service schedule found inside your vehicle’s owner’s manual. The bad news is it’s still costly. Repair costs vary widely, too, due to a number of factors: style of your car, extent of damage, manual vs.That said, the following is a short list of typical Volvo transmission repairs along with their estimated costs: The following is a list of typical repairs: If you’re handy, this is one repair you can do yourself. They work through voltage supplied by your transmission’s computer. Other times it may need to be replaced altogether. If that’s the case, then you’ll need either a rebuilt or a remanufactured transmission.Sometimes it just needs an adjustment, other times it needs to be replaced. If your clutch isn’t the problem, it’s your gearbox. Common warning signs are: In general, automatic transmission problems fall into four categories: What should I do? If you’re certain it’s your transmission, take it to your Volvo mechanic as soon as you can. Even if it’s a small leak, small leaks can turn into big leaks, which could lead to bigger problems down the road. However, insurance might cover the cost if your transmission was damaged in an accident. But it all depends on the type of insurance coverage you have, and even the state you live in. It’s always best to contact your insurance company and ask them directly. I have to apply more than usual force to get it into any gear.I would suggest: - Disconnect each cable and try the gearstick - there should be virtually no resistance with the ball joint disconnected. If there is - suspect the cables but this would be most unusual. - Check carefully in the engine bay. To do both of the above you will probably need to remove the airbox. Have a look at this - this shows the MMT6 gearbox in a Mundano but the 1.6D may be similar. Entertainment centre not great and Bluetooth connection is the worst I've ever had in a car. However, overall a safe, comfortable, roomy car. Reliability Very reliable but new car so should be. Performance Performance good, actually sounds great in sport mode, but that makes MPG even worse so not recommended. Running Cost MPG poor. Owner Review 3 out of 5 Version D4 2.0ltr diesel Year of registration 2014 Average annual mileage More than 20,000 Owned Less than a year Bought Car Used Typical MPG 42 Review Previously had S60 2.0-litre diesel saloon as company car. Liked the look of the XC60 as a replacement and it was 'on the list' so with the appeal of the D4 diesel engine economy figures I went for it. Car has lived up to most expectations with the notable exception of economy. The best achieved on a trip so far is 44mpg. Very disappointed! Could rely on the S60 to deliver 54mpg, even at a good 70mph. In summary, I like the car but not the fuel bill. Running Cost 4 out of 5 Tyre wear could be better. Only volvo seats are comfortable for me. Owner Review 4 out of 5 Version se lux, 2.0-litre to 3.0-litre, Diesel, Manual Year of registration 2009 Average annual mileage More than 20,000 Owned Less than a year Bought Car Used Review Very good to drive, with good performance and road holding, but reliability is an issue. The only fault has been that the rear differential pump went, but was fixed under warranty. I've driven 34,000 miles on the same back tyres, and have been offered a good trade in price, too.I am heavy footed so the car works hard, but I've not had one other problem. Performance 5 out of 5 Very lazy drive it just sits back and goes. Put it into sports mode just watch your licence becomes a different beast thanks to 310 lb torque. I drove 1000 miles on 2 tanks of diesel. Moved down from an XC90 so seems quite compact. Great four pot engine and good ride on 18-inch tyres. Not so good fuel economy - 36.4mpg average. I was getting 33mpg on the D5 XC90 so quite shocked.I had a V70 before so was used to the small buttons, but I will admit that the buttons are small. Turning off functions like lane warning while driving is a dangerous thing to do as you can easily hit wrong buttons first. Car drives very well in normal auto box and becomes an performance car when you switch to sports mode. I love the safety features and parking sensors, some people moan about them making a noise but to be honest they only make noises if you are driving badly or about to hit something. They can all be turned off so if you don't like them turn them off. I would recommend the car to anyone, or any other Volvo model for that matter. The Volvo garage in Kendal was very helpful and I would recommend them as well. Running Cost 3 out of 5 Dealer servicing costs are high. Owner Review 4 out of 5 I would recommend this car to a friend Version 2-3 litre, Diesel, Manual Year of registration 2011 Average annual mileage More than 20,000 Owned Less than a year Bought Car New Typical MPG 38 Running Cost 3 out of 5 Still waiting to get anywhere near the combined figures reported - easy to do on a motorway journey but the overall mpg is still only about 38 against reported figures of over 50. I would expect to be getting over 40. All problems fixed under warranty Running Cost 3 out of 5 A little heavy on fuel. Dealer service costs are high, but non-franchised dealers, even specialist Volvo ones, can't even do an oil change to the auto-box. I hope the chinese continue to develop the products whilst focussing their attention on the dealer network, car is much better than the deals. Great shame. Owner Review 1 out of 5 Version 2.0 d4 Year of registration 2014 Average annual mileage More than 20,000 Owned 2 - 3 years Bought Car Used Typical MPG 44 Review The third Volvo I have owned, a V50 then V70 then XC60 crossover and by far the best ride ever. Good to drive and driving position. But sorry to say the engine and clutch are a disaster. The clutch started going soft and the pedal would drop to the floor within eighteen months. The dealership was not 100 helpful, either. Numerous engine problems and the clutch playing up again and the engine is now using oil and water. The car is waiting to go in for repair. A shame as it's a very comfy and decent car apart from the driveline. I have been told that Volvo is now Chinese owned and hope this doesn't spell the end of Volvo reliability. My MD is getting same economy with a discovery. It is powerful enough, and I love the lack of intrusive noise that makes it so easy to just talk to people in the back of the car without raising your voice even at motorway speeds. Slight negative with the bluetooth functionality not being perfect, and as some have mentioned, the economy is a long way off what I expected to achieve. I drive quite conservatively and the best trip average I've ever made (with all conditions favourable) was 52mpg, but we're normally down in the 40-45mpg range, which is just too far off what was anticipated. Oh, and on the comfort, that doesn't seem to apply to anyone sitting in the middle seat on the rear bench, that seems slightly elevated and stiff, and is not a good place for an adult to be (not that they usually are). Reliability So far so good. Performance 5 out of 5 Very strong for a 2L Running Cost 2 out of 5 Sorry, but the economy is a real disappointment. Owner Review 5 out of 5 I would recommend this car to a friend Version SE Lux D4 manual Year of registration 2014 Average annual mileage More than 20,000 Owned Less than a year Bought Car Used Typical MPG 40 Review Great all-round family car. Loads of space and solid build quality. My previous VW CC gave me a dodgy back and I have tried nearly every car out and the Volvo is miles more comfortable than anything else. Some complain about fuel economy but it really does depend on how heavy your right foot is. I'd rather sacrifice a bit at the pumps and have the confidence to overtake quickly without having to change down a gear. Several recalls. Running Cost 3 out of 5 Poor fuel consumption. A joy to own and a joy to drive. Very comfortable and good to drive but I have to visit garage to fix engine niggles on a regular basis, which negates this. Volvo unable to sort fuel valve issue and the myriad of other electrical engine faults. A dog. Owner Review 1 out of 5 Version 2.0 De Year of registration 2014 Average annual mileage More than 20,000 Owned Less than a year Bought Car Used Typical MPG 42 Review Extremely comfortable on smooth roads. But then extremely uncomfortable on any other road surface. On open country roads you are forced to slow down to achieve any level of comfort. With the new high efficiency engine, even driving at my most frugal I cannot get above 42 or 43mpg compared to high 50s expected. My previous car was a 2.0 diesel Passat in which I achieved over 58 mpg average over 60,00 miles. I expected the same or similar but this thing just drinks fuel. Reliability No problems so far Performance 2 out of 5 Good performance promised but at the rate this uses fuel I cannot afford to put my foot down. Running Cost 1 out of 5 The most uneconomical 2.0-litre vehicle I have owned in 10 years. This new high efficiency engine appears to be at least 6 (or more) years behind the equivalent engine from VW. My advice: buy a Passat. Poor steering lock and very poor MPG compared with Volvo figures. Reliability 5 out of 5 Reliability good. Performance 5 out of 5 Good. Running Cost 2 out of 5 Poor mpg. Both driveshafts replaced under warranty (a known early XC60 issue), work done without question by main dealer. Running Cost 3 out of 5 Routine service costs are a little high, especially when the minimal amount of work required is taken into consideration. I loathe the garage practice of charging for oil in half litre increments, when the same oil can be purchased at less than halk their price from almost any motor factor. But a string of irritating problems necessitating regular repeat visits (and a round trip of 100 miles) to dealers have convinced me that the volvo marque is not what it's cracked up to be. Some significant disappointments with running costs (actual versus claimed fuel consumption is 25 higher), automatic gearbox previous generation standard. Excellent styling and practicality for family car. A few minor design faults: 1. When driving, the rear fog light switch is hidden by the steering wheel and you have to fumble to press it (I do worry I will open the tailgate pressing the wrong button). 2. The main speed in fixed in mph. Reliability 3 out of 5 Great reliability except for the intermittent judders and minor power loss. Performance 5 out of 5 Quite quick although the manual gearbox is a bit clunky. Ride is very good. Running Cost 5 out of 5 Basic service costs and mpg not bad for its size. Love the upgraded sound system and the sunroof. I considered the X3 and Q5 as options and preferred the XC60 based upon its styling and equipment level as well as the drive (X3 was an excellent drive too though, while the Q5 was bland but both had reliability issues upon researching - how accurate that is, maybe debatable). The seats are the most comfortable I've ever sat in and the visibility is amongst the best you'll find. Performance is fantastic it really does shift and equally is great around town too, sport mode shows what the 5 cylinder engine can deliver. Fuel economy is as claimed. Excellent to drive. Comfortable ride, smooth transmission, lovely sests, good load carrier, no reason whatsoever to regret my choice. The 17 inch alloys allow a big tyre which means a softer ride. It's my 13th car, my 6th volvo, and on both counts the best one yet. Altogether a fabulous car.Performance 5 out of 5 Very responsive engine and transmission. Loads of power when asked for. Running Cost 5 out of 5 43mpg diesel for a 2 ton car with plenty of power is pretty good in my book. Servicing deal ?100 per yearfor 5 years. Extremely costly to run as every time there is an exhaust recycling problem you are looking at least ?1,000 to sort it out. As our first was after only three years, we must be due another one soon. Got to destination 3 times and plug in to return. No road lights signals etc. Had to have van returned later by RAC contractors. Had fixed but repeated. Cant find an answer it would seem. I get my car on Motability scheme, won't get another for sure. Nice enough to drive but that's all. They have never managed to fix it and the car has been in the garage on many many occasions. I was told that as it was an ongoing fault that it would be kept under warranty. Now it's passed it's warranty and has the same fault, we now have to pay to get it fixed!!! It's unbelievable and never known such poor customer service. Never been to dealer after I bought it for half a year. Works as expected. Like my Sensus Connected Touch (rooted) with my Android apps installed. Owner Review 3 out of 5 I would recommend this car to a friend Year of registration 2014 Owned Less than a year Bought Car New Typical MPG 16 Review I do NOT like this car. The control panel is hard to see, crowded, and obscured most of the time by the driver's arm. The flashers that alert you that you are being passed go constantly in heavy traffic--a major distraction. I do not need a siren shrieking while I am parallel parking--duh, I know I am close to his bumper. The backup camera and the right rear view mirror are badly distorted with regard to true distance. This was a loaner, but a 2014 model, and already the key fob did not reliably open the trunk. This one needs work. Running Cost 5 out of 5 If you complain about running costs then you have not done your homework correct and you are driving the wrong car.Running Cost 4 out of 5 Took 3-year service package which is very good. Fuel is only real cost and this is OK for the size and type of vehicle. Routine servicing costs only, with light tyre wear.
