Cthulhu: Tales From The Crucible Achtung. Cthulhu: Secret War Documents Achtung. Cthulhu: Plotting Cthulhu Dossier For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background. For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive. Original electronic format These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality. Cthulhu: Investigator's and Keeper's Guides. Join the Secret War now!' Cthulhu line to the south of the European continent. The pdf-only version can be obtained for EUR 11,99. It comes in two different flavours: the full colour one and the printer friendly one. The background colour of the latter is plain white. Cthulhu line, with a 7-page chronology of events in Africa. The chronology starts from 1869 (!) and ends in February 1945. It includes war and esoteric references, with substantially longer write-ups for the months the war raged on. Very small write-ups cover the war in East Africa (Sudan, British Somaliland and Kenya amongst others), while Cairo gets covered more extensively with some notable locations. These include military and political ones, clubs and nightlife, hotels, restaurants, shopping and sightseeing. British intelligence is covered in depth, cataloguing its internal problems and inefficiency. The media are briefly discussed, with the characters having the option of starting as autonomous journalists in the desert. The Americans (the OSS) and the Germans (Canaris' Abwehr) also have their intelligence services working at full throttle, and many ideas can be mined from the descriptions of their respective organisations. Heroes can belong to a number of nationalities, including many of the ones initially described in the Investigator's Guide. The changes mostly relate to local nationalities, like Abyssinian. Sudanese, South African and even Bedouin. There is a number of new civilian and military occupations, like archaeologist, Bedouin tribesman, Foreign Legion Soldier and the Greek Sacred Band. Perks and Privileges provides alternatives for bonuses in the character occupation template. Oz, New Zealand and India are covered. As an example, a character from Oz can have the Aussie spirit, be a veteran or a larrikin, with all bonuses and quirks each provides. New weapons couldn't be missing; we get a couple of dozen for the Italians and the Americans. New esoteric equipment include the Blue Crystal Detector, the Direction Finder and the ornamental-looking Atlantean Silver Gun. There are new vehicles, vessels and aircraft for pretty much everybody including Vichy France, as well as new augmented vehicles for the setting (all of them German, of course; Vorsprung durch Technik). Expect numerous long lists. All this heat is not conducive to ones well-being; there is now an extreme designation for CoC, dividing by five the possibility of success when rolling a skill (Savage Worlds already foresaw this type of penalization). There is dehydration, heatstroke, sunburn, sunblindness, as well as extra rules for walking in the desert with extra weight and scavenging. Highlight include the hilariously named 'Order of the Crocodile' (which is otherwise anything but hilarious), numerous NPCs that can be used as is with full write-ups and dual stats, as well as a number of ancient ruins and mysterious locations, be them historical or Mythos-related. Not everything is new and shiny, seeing how 14 out of the 21 spells are existing Call of Cthulhu spells and are taken from the CoC main rulebook. For Savage Worlds players on the other hand, everything is a surprise. With the exception of the Great Race Of Yith and the Sand Dwellers, everything else is new and gets the dual stats treatment. First come the VIPs like Montgomery, Rommel, Graziani, Bradley and Selassie. The civilian supporting cast follows, with the NPCs that the Keeper may use. There are museum directors and antiquities dealers, tribal chiefs and Egyptologist, the French resistance as well as westernized Arabic women. The militaries include Vichy and Foreign Legion Frenchies, members of the infamous Deutsches Afrika Korps as well as Alpini and Blackshirts. The final chapter of the book is Suggested Resources, a list of films, series, books web pages, museums and role-playing games of note that will help a player navigate the setting and rules. It is not the same as in the main rulebooks, focusing mostly on Northern Africa. Cthulhu you have read, it is extremely easy to get into this guide, or any guide for that matter. They all follow closely the same order as the Keeper's Guide and capitalise on its strengths. The sandbox approach is still there. There is an enormous wealth of WWII material, even though much of it are a bird's eye view and will need quite some focus and detail from the Keeper in order for it to work. It is not similar to Europe. Things are more. relaxed in many ways, personnel is farther away from the grind of headquarters, everything is more subdued. Nobody cares about occupying sand dunes, and many of the locals wouldn't give a rat's ass about the war of foreigners anyway. Northern Africa is not the primary objective in itself; this makesthe ferocity with which the war was fought there even more surreal. In fact, this is probably the closest to a typical Cthulhu game one can get (always discounting the WWII setting), seeing how there are antiquarians, museums and Egypt, a perennial favourite. Linking and actively endorsing one of the best known megacampaigns of Call of Cthulhu earns the volume points. When the material it can be immediately usable as RPG-related, it is of a very high quality. Instead of providing lists and departments of the intelligence agencies, the book goes straight into the thick of it, presenting how they screw up, how they antagonize each other and why the Germans have the advantage, at least at some point in the war. The chapter on the Secret War is revealing and gave me quite the ideas about how to run Acthung. Cthulhu sessions; not with the same characters in extended campaigns (always provided they survive), but with different characters taking up different missions at different places and times, like an anthology of sorts. This would also resolve the problem of making use of otherwise non-RPG usable information. Some of the ideas are so cleverly bizarre that you are not sure whether they actually happened in reality or not (fake ruins being one of them). Add all this to rules and material that cannot be found elsewhere (e.g. the book contains pretty much every possible Italian NPC that your players may encounter on any front, rules on weather that can be transposed to other harsh climates with minimal fuss etc), and you understand why you might be interested in buying it even if Acthung. Cthulhu is not your line of choice and would prefer something darker like World War Cthulhu. It goes without saying that this book can be more than simply mined, it can be stripped clean for ideas and even CoC or Savage Worlds stats that cannot be found elsewhere. Seeing how minimal the rule changes between editions are, I expect the Keeper to have no more than a 5-minute chore in order to rethink some of the stats, if he wishes to use the current, 7th edition of the game. Cthulhu is well-supported is a class A understatement. The blurb actually lies: there are substantially more than 11 products in the line. I alone have 13 Achtung. Cthulhu RPG products to review and there are a handful of pre-kickstarter pdfs that I am not even reviewing in this batch. There are two other sourcebooks in a similar vein to the present one, the Guide To The Eastern Front and the Guide To The Pacific Front. The RPG line is further accompanied by a miniatures game as well as the Shadows Over Normandie boardgame, a spin-off of Heroes Of Normandie. There is even Achtung. Cthulhu apparel in the market. I do not see what Modiphius could have done more to support this line; they did everything and then some. Achtung! Cthulhu has a very strong visual identity that gets confirmed book after book. The only minor hick up relates to the cover art. Not because it is not good, mind you, but because it is the same one used in Dark Tales From The Secret War. Take the layout into account and the book strongly succeeds in making the game feel real, original as well as thematic in one go. Again, however, there are no swastikas, in case you expected the most potent symbol of human-made ultimate evil. The laws in many European countries prohibit its use, thus, Acthung. Cthulhu along with pretty much every other WWII game out there, has an iron cross equivalent where the swastika would have been. The fonts are rather small and the amount of text in the book substantially more than you would have expected. There are no blocks of text. The chapters and subchapters give a nice, smooth flow to the whole thing. Everything is right where you expect it to be, including bookmarks for all the chapters and sub-chapters. Cthulhu line: Fate material is not provided, even though the Fate Guides To The Secret War is arguably the best, and probably pulpiest, main book of the line. Thus, one of the three systems the game can be run on is spectacularly ignored by the sourcebooks. I am not sure why that is, but seeing how I enjoyed the Fate iteration more than expected, I am kind of disappointed about it. It is as if the book takes for granted that one will not run an extremely long campaign in North Africa, and that if he does so it will be primarily a point to point military one. This means that you are on your own if you wish to portray characters from the region. What is the difference between a Moroccan and an Algerian (a rhetoric question, mind you). Character creation shouldn't be about stats only, it should be about personality and character, especially in a Mythos game. Idem for different lands. Don't expect to have an idea of how one country in the region is different than the other after reading this book. The spotlight definitely belongs to WWII by an enormous margin, be it through the historical information that is provided, the lists of equipment and the small bios of the VIPs that don't necessarily go into the Secret War. I would have enjoyed a more potent Cthulhu in a game that is called Achtung! Cthulhu. However, I am wondering whether I am perceiving this all wrong. For the line to work one needs the CoC (or Savage Worlds) rulebook. Maybe Modiphius thinks of CoC as the main provider of Mythos information and inspiration, balancing things on the sum of the books used and not in each of the line's book autonomously. But then, what if one uses Savage Worlds. Where does he get his Mythos fix and ideas from? Namely, only a part of the book can be immediately used in an RPG. The rest is great as backdrop and ancillary information. It does not however answer immediate RPG needs which, conversely, remain unanswered. There is a very high chance that a chunk of info contained herein will never be known by the players, no matter how much of a hard on it gives to the Keeper, while information that the Keeper could have used immediately is omitted due to lack of space. This is really a pity. Cthulhu shines bright mostly as a pulp game than as a heavy, gritty, purist CoC experience where all characters meet their doom after a fraction of an adventure. The Guide To North Africa is no different: there are pages upon pages of equipment that would have looked great on GURPS WWII but play only secondary fiddle in a traditional CoC game, VIPs that the characters will never get to meet unless the Investigators try something insanely heroic or heroically insane Inglourious Basterds-style, and so on and so forth. The book is more about dropping the Cthulhu experience in WWII than the opposite, making it a great fit for any sort of Castle Wolfenstein, Indiana Jones or other, pulpy styles of adventures. If you are a purist, you have quite some work in your hands to round things out. Keepers that have the full line however will have a bit of bookkeeping at their hands. And why are the Italians mostly included here instead of the Keeper's Guide? There is not much guidance provided on campaign-building, on scene-setting or on scenario implementation. There is ample information about the front, not much however on how to distinguish this particular front from other fronts on your gaming table.
