She is mainly into abstract work, and that is true of her collage too, yet the Art Journaling community loves her, and the more I see of her blog, her videos and this book, I understand why. Because I love her teaching style, and her work too. And it is about as far away from anything I might do as is possible. I love this book. I'm going to be working my way through the projects. Not all of them, but some. I might end up with some abstract things, but I have a feeling it is going to be a good thing, and it will inform everything else I am trying to do.I have three and they’re what I pick up over and over again for motivation and inspiration. I never believed I had any artistic talent until trying the techniques suggested in her books. Artistic talent is not necessarily just an innate quality. It can be learned and improved with practice.In COLLAGE WITH COLOR, she presented her whimsical and child like side. In COLLAGE JOURNEYS, she presents a more artistic and Avant-garde side. I guess it would be like Eric Carle vs. Pablo Picasso. As a BFA and graphic artist, I appreciate and love them both. In this current book, she challenges the reader to reach into his inner-self and create from the heart. It is a marvelous book to inspire you, challenge you, and help you continue to develop your style as an artist. Although it may be intimidating to the novice artist, I highly recommend this book.The book is practical--you can dip into it for inspiration, you can read it as a how-to. The book contains ideas, projects, and many, many wonderful photos. What appeals to me most is the variety of collage techniques that are explained and shown. Specifically for creative people who love collage and who think they've exhausted the medium--make room on your art table for this book.If you are interested in jump starting your creativity this is a great book for that. Jane doesn't just show you how to make a collage, she also shows you how to think about your work or your life and write it all down in order to make your artwork more meaningful. I have been keeping a collage journal as she suggests and it has really helped me. Especially when I don't feel like starting a painting or anything big. Just a small collage in my sketchbook is all it takes to get me going. The layout of the book is really nice as well. Some art books get so caught up in being artsy that you can't read them. Although there are no tutorials for them, there are plenty of ideas to absorb. This is not really a step-by-step instruction book although it includes several projects and discusses artistic techniques to create mixed media art. Among them: layering, using text, making your own backgrounds and materials, exploring colors and composition, making tissue paper and cut paper collages, using digital software to created altered images for collage. The instructions are clear and the exercises and techniques covered are enough to get a beginner started on making collage and art in general. But in my opinion, this is a more advanced art book because it goes beyond the basics of introducing tools, materials and techniques. Truly inspirational. It has various projects that you can try to explore collage art techniques as well as exploring yourself. It talks a lot about collage in different formats from large size, small size, collections and journaling. Collage can be the basis for art peices or the art itself in full.
