The camera is an utter lightweight, autoexposure with exposure compensation for complicated lighting situations, mirror-up self-timer mode for vibration-free shots, a fully manual autoexposure camera with the manual adapter attached, and last but not least, the drawcard, accessibility to the range of pedigree 35mm Zuiko OM full-frame lenses and lens accessories. I couldn't turn this down. I wanted to keep the review simple and also go and shoot a roll of film, develop and make a few prints. Operationally, the Olympus OM10 is an aperture-priority Autoexposure mode camera with a center-weighted light metering system.A Quartz version of the OM10, the OM10 Quartz was released in 1980 with a fixed data back (equivalent to the Recordata Back 3 of the OM-System), to print the time or date on your pictures. The OM10 Quartz is only available in black. Film backs are not interchangeable. A hot shoe is integrated on top of the pentaprism. A small slider switch, located on the opposite edge, partly hidden behind the film-advance lever, engages the Bulb and Manual setting mode. The Olympus OM bodies were divided in a high range and a middle range. The two digit models were the middle range. The nucleus of the system was a series of compact bodies divided into an advanced series and a later consumer-oriented series. The first model was the all-mechanical M-1 which, after pressure from Leica (which already had an M1 model), was renamed OM-1. At the same time the M system was renamed OM System. The camera included a full-aperture TTL Cadmium-sulphide (CdS) exposure meter, and a bayonet lens mount of relatively large diameter. By the end of the 1970s it was joined by the semi-automatic OM-2 and consumer-oriented OM-10. Olympus continued the naming pattern with the 'professional' OM-3 and OM-4, and the consumer-level OM-20, OM-30 and OM-40. The cameras were accompanied by a series of Zuiko-branded lenses, as well as a generous selection of accessories. It became one of the most popular Olympus models. As a basic consumer model it has only the Aperture-priority Automatic Exposure but still it is able to take advantage of the whole (almost) Olympus System accessories. The manual-exposure adapter for it was provided as an option. There is dial on this adapter, that makes it possible to set shutter speeds 1 sec. OM-10 does not support TTL dedicated flash but it can work dedicated auto, with the light reading being done on the flash.About 50 different Zuiko interchangeable lenses. The camera supports both xD and CompactFlash memory cards, which were not included in the kit. The E-500 is equipped with an 8 Megapixel CCD sensor (Mfg by Kodak) which measures 17.3x13mm (Max 3264 x 2448 pixels) and conforms to the FourThirds format. A lot of times, I ended up buying a camera that I already had in my collection. This happened with the Olympus Trip 35 and the next thing I knew, I had three of them. I love that camera, but I thought that it was a shame to have three of them since there was really no difference between them. Therefore I decided to sell the other two and I put them up for sale at a local second-hand webshop (not an auction), and a guy from the same city replied to it. He offered me a trade. It has a very accurate built-in light meter, with an indicator in the viewfinder. You just set the aperture to the desired value, and it will automatically use the correct shutter speed, according to the ISO value (which can also be set manually between 25-1600). Or you can read the metering in the viewfinder and if you have the adapter, you may set both the aperture and the shutter speed manually. There's no auto-focus, but the viewfinder is very bright, and it has a split-field focusing glass, so it easily gets accurate focus. After shooting the first roll of film with it and having confirmed that the condition of the camera was just as good as it appeared to be, I felt like trying to use it with a flash. I had heard that using the wrong type of flash on an SLR could damage the camera or the flash, so I searched the web and asked for help on a local forum for analog photographers. He also had some extra lenses for sale. I didn't buy the flash since I wanted to use my Diana flash with it instead. But of course, it's great for any occasion where you need to get a little closer! Some people are better at keeping a steady hand than others, and sometimes you would want a blurred image on purpose. It's a relief to use a camera that is so easy to work with such as this one. You don't have to think about too many factors but you still have the choice to use them when you need to. And that can only mean more creative opportunities for you down the road. The descriptions are entirely based on a particular camera that I have before me. Behind the pressure plate inside the camera is a code which tells us exactly when it was made. The first digit is the factory code, the next digit is the year and the third digit is the month of manufacture. My camera has the code S19 so it was made in September 1981. It is an aperture priority automatic exposure camera. Olympus produced a manual adapter which more of later. At this age, the camera only offers manual focussing but as I am not a fan of automatic focussing this is no big deal. It measures 136mm wide by 83 mm high and 50mm thick and weighs just under half a kilo (so is half the weight of my trusty Zenit E !). This camera requires batteries to work. Luckily they are not mercury cells so will still be available. This shutter speed is indicated by way of a red LED in the viewfinder. As a landscape photographer, this is the way I want to work, so this is ideal. Available speeds are 1, 2, 4, 8, 15, 30, 60, 125, 250, 500 and 1000 (all fractions of a second). The one second setting is actually one second or longer, according to the manual. What I do miss that more modern cameras offer is an exposure lock by half depressing the shutter release. This lens is very well thought of but its minimum focal length is too long for most work. I have just replaced it with a Vivitar 28-200 macro zoom which does not have quite the same reputation but seems to be at least ok. B will allow the shutter to remain open while the shutter release is depressed and manual allows the manual adapter to be used. There is also a frame counter and, around the shutter release, a collar that will take the camera out of sleep mode. This sounds and lights up when the control (3) is set to battery check. If the battery is flat or missing it neither sounds nor lights up. It also sounds and th light flashes when the self-timer is selected.It would seem that this camera will not accept a motor-drive. To do so, you have to buy the optional manual adapter which plugs into a jack socket on then upper left front of the camera. This over-rides the automatic system and allows you to set the shutter speed yourself, as well as the aperture. I am currently on my second roll of film in my OM10 and the camera is becoming easier to use. I am actually quite happy with just a plain focussing screen but the split-screen is actually faster when I remember it is there. While there is a definite “clunk” when you press the shutter release, I suspect I am sub-consciously comparing this to the whisper of the leaf shutters in the cameras I mostly use. It is certainly a lighter action than with my Zenit E! The controls, such as they are, are easy to access. I always shoot with aperture priority which is what this camera is designed for. If I ever shot with shutter priority I might change my mind. The simple way to give automatic exposure system shutter priority is to adjust the aperture ring until the required shutter speed appears in the viewfinder display. This is unnecessarily slow. The other way to get shutter priority is to use the manual adapter and set both shutter speed and aperture from a seperate light meter. The only time I have used the manual adapter is on a beach in bright sunlight where I wanted to give more exposure than the camera wanted. It is not a well thought out system, but it does not reallymatter as I use aperture priority and that is well thought out. Film advance is a very managable sweep of the lever. It is a solidly made lens, weighing slightly more than my new Canon 50mm lens that also has auto-focus machinery in it. The focussing ring has a nice, tactile rubber finish which will make this lens easy to use by feel. It takes 49mm threaded filters. I am retired with about 45 years photography experience. I get nostalgic tinglies looking at your photos of it. I really should find myself a good example of one. I loved mine. I spent endless hours as a young teen playing with it.
