It is definitely targeted for North America, which you can tell from its larger size, a feature prevalent in North American vehicles. The first generation of Pilots came with one of four different engines that each produced more than 240 horsepower depending upon the year, but all of them were equipped with 5-speed automatic transmissions. All Pilots from this generation featured a 3.5L J35Z4 V6 engine and continued to come with 5-speed automatic transmissions. Depending upon which trim an owner selected, their Pilot would have either front wheel drive or all wheel drive. The improvements made to the model during this generation were definitely well received. The newer model looks quite different from its two predecessors, and is far more curved and rounded than older generations. These Pilots come equipped with a 3.5L J35Z6 V6 engine, and finally deviated from the standard 5-speed automatic transmission. A 6-speed automatic transmission is now used, with the option of upgrading to a 9-speed automatic. The newest Pilots are also exceptionally safe, being made from a mixture mostly comprised of steel. Instead of paying someone else to change your oil, learn how to do it yourself and never pay someone else again. Its similar logic to the saying: give a man a fish, and he’ll eat for a day, but teach him how to fish and he’ll eat for a lifetime. Invest in yourself and your vehicle and learn how to do it on your own. You can find a Honda Pilot service manual for any generation or year you might have. My biggest reservation involves the Jetta’s reliability history, which is especially bad for high-performance variants like the GLI. If poor reliability doesn’t faze you, act soon — Volkswagen will import just 1,200 Fahrenheits, and they’re likely to sell out quickly. Both have custom paint: The GTI is Fahrenheit Orange, and the GLI is Imola Yellow. Based on its looks, I’d guess that Imola was German for “extreme, like the sun.” Actually, it refers to a Formula One grand prix race in Italy — something in which Volkswagen has no claim to fame. Go figure. Other interior changes involve the color scheme. Imola Yellow lives on — it’s on the trim strips lining the dashboard and doors, as well as the leather stitching on the steering wheel, gearshift and parking brake. The two cars are otherwise mechanically identical. Volkswagen’s direct-injection, 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder is a remarkably flexible engine, and it makes for entertaining, if not quite breathtaking, acceleration. Peak torque comes at just 1,800 rpm, and it sticks around until 5,000 rpm. Competitors like the Honda Civic Si hit their stride much higher up the tachometer, which means you have to rev the engine hard to get the desired power. The GLI, in contrast, can dig itself out of most situations without needing a downshift. In sixth gear, I could pull comfortably from 60 to 70 mph on the highway, which is not something most four-cylinder cars can do. There’s a progressive influx of power as revs build, and the engine won’t run out of steam until the needle swings past 6,000 rpm. Torque steer and turbo lag become apparent under hard acceleration, but most of the time the car masks both tendencies well. Put the pedal to the metal, and Volkswagen says the Fahrenheit GLI will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in about 7 seconds. According to our friends at MotorWeek, that puts this VW on par with the Civic Si and Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V. The shift gates are well defined, but the whole setup in my test car felt loosely constructed. Even when the shifter was in gear, there was a lot of wiggle room — and yes, the shift knob was screwed on tightly. I’ll attribute some wear to the car’s 6,000 miles of journalistic thrashing, but even at that, it seemed excessively wobbly. The Fahrenheit’s clutch pedal has a light effort and a wide, forgiving engagement point, which makes for relatively easy stop-and-go driving. It uses two clutches to swap gears much more quickly than a conventional automatic, and it has both fully automatic and manual-shift modes. My Fahrenheit came with the stick shift, but I’ve driven the DSG elsewhere; when it comes to performance driving, it beats most automatics by far. Volkswagen recommends premium fuel. The discs in the GLI are larger than those in the regular Jetta. The brakes in my test car were pretty well shot, but once I pressed the pedal hard enough, they delivered acceptable stopping power. It feels markedly heavier — a good thing, as the last base-model Jetta I drove went overboard with the power assist. The GLI’s steering strikes a good balance between crisp turning response and easy low-speed maneuvering, though sports-car fans may still find there’s too much power assist. Like other GLIs, it’s tuned for sportier response than the suspension in the base Jetta, and it makes for a car you can drive hard through the corners. Body roll is minimal, and although the chassis clearly has more weight up front, the resulting understeer — where the front wheels slip — is both progressive and predictable. In sum, the Fahrenheit will break free of its tracks quite readily, but it’s easy to reel back in when you want to straighten things out. It’s never intolerable, but after a while the road imperfections start to wear through the seat cushions. It’s far more upscale, both in features and cabin quality — not to mention in price. Other niceties include a center armrest that ratchets up and forward for better support, one-touch power windows, and probably one of the best moonroof executions in the business — turn the knob where you want the glass to open, including any halfway increment, and it takes care of the rest while you go back to driving. The dashboard has tight seams and upscale materials, and the manual climate controls are simple and high-quality. The thin center cushions wear on you over the long haul, though, and the manual recliner uses a hard-to-reach knob rather than the simpler lever adjustment most cars have. The Fahrenheit’s standard leather upholstery has multiple layers of overlapped stitching — the sort of stuff you’d find in a pricey luxury car. The backseat is snug; I’m about 6 feet tall, and headroom was tight. As do most Jettas, the Fahrenheit has a center pass-thru. The Jetta scored the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s top rating, Good, in front- and side-impact crash tests. Its six standard airbags include side-impact airbags for the front seats and side curtain airbags for both rows. Every Jetta also has four-wheel-disc antilock brakes and traction control. An electronic stability system, optional on the base Jetta, is standard on the GLI. Rarer are pretensioners for the outboard rear seats, which the Fahrenheit includes in an optional package that also features side-impact airbags for backseat passengers. Of those cars, all but one listing said the car had a manual transmission. Volkswagen says it split Fahrenheit production evenly between manuals and automatics, but the DSG may have proved more popular than expected. That explains why the majority of unsold Fahrenheits have stick shifts. The Jetta has a dubious past: Consumer Reports lists it prominently under Used Cars to Avoid, and the current generation earns low short-term quality scores from J.D. Power and Associates. More troubling are the results for turbocharged models like the GLI, which CR gives its lowest reliability score: Much Worse Than Average. It’s something of a small-car treat, with plenty of unexpected luxuries and a peppy engine to boot, and its sterling crash-test ratings and large trunk help its case. Volkswagen says all 1,200 cars have already been shipped, so if the remaining listings are any indication, the Fahrenheit should have no problem selling out. But he also likes a fair price. Email Kelsey It simply keeps running and without any problems. Comfortable and secured ride. Wonderful in long distance driving. Bumper-to-bumper warranties typically expire faster than powertrain warranties. It typically covers just the engine and transmission, along with any other moving parts that lead to the wheels, like the driveshaft and constant velocity joints. Some automakers also bundle seat belts and airbags into their powertrain warranties. With a few exceptions, powertrain warranties don't cover regular maintenance like engine tuneups and tire rotations. These programs cover anything from flat-tire changes and locksmith services to jump-starts and towing. Few reimburse incidental costs like motel rooms (if you have to wait for repairs). Some include consumables including brake pads and windshield wipers; others do not. They are typically for the first couple of years of ownership of a new car. While dealers and third parties certify cars, the gold standard is an automaker-certified vehicle that provides a factory-backed warranty, often extending the original coverage. Vehicles must be in excellent condition and have low miles and wear to be certified, which is why off-lease vehicles feed many CPO programs. Although improving, VW’s reliability and repair history still lag behind its Japanese competitors. New standard features include a tire pressure monitor, audio auxiliary input jack and a simplified cruise control unit. Due to EPA Tier 2 regulations, the high-mileage TDI diesel is not offered for 2007, but VW promises its return early in 2008. While it isn’t the fastest car in its class, it’s now fast enough to nose its way past the pack when it has to. Highway ride is firm, while road, wind and engine noise are all perceptible but not unpleasant. And if your favorite leg of any journey is the twisty one, the Jetta delivers ample cornering ability complemented by quick, smooth manual Tiptronic downshifts and a satisfying exhaust note. They might also enjoy the available rear-seat armrest, which allows for a useful trunk pass-through as well. Overall, the interior is attractive and refined, with materials and finish that are tough to match in the category. The new Jetta is also seven inches longer than the previous generation, which no doubt contributes to its more refined appearance. Whether you find the less-playful styling more appealing may depend on whether you think of the Jetta as a fun beach cruiser or a high-value German sedan. Standard safety equipment includes traction control, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes (ABS), active head restraints and front side-impact and full-length side-curtain airbags. Additional options include a six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission, leather seating, power moonroof, premium sound system, navigation, alloy wheels, HomeLink, SIRIUS Satellite Radio and 12-way adjustable front seats with driver’s memory. If you can swing the extra cash, get the 2.0-liter turbo. This engine delivers better fuel economy than the 2.5-liter and it’s fast as well. This same engine is used in the Audi A3 and A4, it’s amazingly refined and has minimal turbo lag. Four trim levels comprise the Jetta lineup. Before you set out to buy a Jetta, be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price. It shows what others in your area are currently paying for their cars. The Jetta’s resale value is near the top of its class, on par with the Honda Civic, Nissan Altima and Toyota Corolla, better than the Mazda Mazda3 and far better than the Hyundai Elantra, Dodge Stratus and Ford Fusion. See your car's value Edmunds' Expert Review Though not possessing as much European character as one might hope, the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta is nonetheless an impressive small sedan that delivers in the key areas of comfort, performance and equipment. Vehicle overview For most of the new millennium, the Volkswagen Jetta has been a popular choice of consumers wanting an upscale small economy car. With its European styling, precision road manners, powerful engines and well crafted interior, the Jetta has provided a step up in prestige and character compared to other economy sedans from Japan and Korea. The historical tradeoff has been a higher price and, on the previous-generation Jetta, a lackluster reputation for reliability. A rather interesting bit of news has cropped up for the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta, however. In light of stiff competition, VW has dropped the price of the car considerably without making any dramatic cuts in content. Though the Jetta's higher trim levels are still more expensive than average, the overall drop in price has largely eliminated one of the car's greater drawbacks. The current Jetta was last redesigned midway through the 2005 model year. It's noticeably larger than the previous version and is about the same size as a Toyota Corolla. It's decently roomy as small sedans go and should impress owners with its attention to detail and meticulous build quality. Many editors on our staff are particularly smitten with the performance-oriented Jetta GLI. The GLI is the most entertaining model of the range and goes a long way toward adding some extra personality to the car. Overall, the 2007 VW Jetta is a very enticing vehicle. But there's no denying that the Jetta betters almost all other cars in its segment in terms of cabin design, powertrain performance and feature content. The Jetta 2.5 is pretty much identical other than having 16-inch wheels, some chrome exterior trim, a rear center armrest and access to more optional features. On the 2.5, VW offers two pricey packages. As stand-alone options, VW offers 17-inch alloy wheels, a sunroof and a navigation system with iPod connectivity. Opting for the Jetta 2.0T nets you the CD changer, along with a more powerful turbocharged engine. The top-shelf GLI has some exclusive features such as bi-xenon headlights, 17-inch alloy wheels or optional 18s, a sport-tuned suspension, color-keyed body cladding, metallic interior trim, sport-oriented front seats and sport fabric upholstery. 2007 Highlights A few changes occur on the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta. The company says the change is to foster increased competitiveness against Asian-brand sedans. On the downside, the popular diesel-fueled Jetta TDI has been discontinued due to its inability to pass new 2007 government emissions tests. Look for it to return next year. Other updates for the '07 Jetta include the return of the Wolfsburg Edition sedan (which has the 2.5-liter engine and standard leatherette upholstery), a new Apple iPod adapter, simplified cruise control actuation, a standard tire-pressure monitor and, as options, a 115-volt power outlet and Homelink transmitter. A five-speed manual is standard on the base and 2.5 trims, while the 2.0T and GLI feature a six-speed manual. A traditional six-speed automatic is available on the 2.5. For the 2.0T and GLI, VW offers its slick six-speed DSG sequential-shift transmission that can be shifted manually or placed in an auto mode. All Jettas are front-wheel-drive. For the turbocharged cars, expect a 0-60-mph time of about 8 seconds flat. Fuel economy isn't so great on the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta, especially now that the diesel engine has been discontinued. Safety Four-wheel antilock disc brakes, seat-mounted side airbags for front occupants, full-length head curtain airbags and a tire-pressure monitor are standard across the line. Stability control is either standard or optional, depending on the model. Seat-mounted side airbags for rear passengers are optional. In NHTSA crash tests, the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta received four out of five stars for protection of front-seat occupants in head-on collisions and five stars for front- and rear-occupant protection in side impacts. Driving On the road, the Jetta manages to provide both comfortable ride quality and agile handling. Though not as edgy as the previous model, the current VW Jetta has a rock-solid feel with a surprisingly quiet ride. Acceleration is acceptable with all of the engines, but our favorite is the smooth and potent turbo four. This engine is most enjoyable in the Jetta GLI model, which has a taut suspension to back it up. Interior The Volkswagen Jetta's cabin is filled with high-quality materials and assembled with care. Even the base model has an upscale flair with comfortable seating and tasteful trim. A tall roof line gives the front seats a spacious feel. Headroom is a little tight in the rear, but there's ample legroom for adults. Trunk capacity measures an impressive 16 cubic feet. It picks up speed very fast and the Tiptronic transmission is great for people who like to drive. I am very impressed that Volkswagen has taken the initiative to make so many safety features standard and my insurance went DOWN after purchasing a brand new car. It is great - I love the styling and it's just a lot of fun. Everything on this car is decent to good but not stellar. It's a nice, sporty vehicle, great sound system, handles well and I loved it while I leased it. But even during that time frame there were recalls on the vehicle for small things like Light adjustments. Third recall was for fixing the wiper blades which threaten to cut the fuel line. The spedometer is off and the clock runs fast. But be warned: If the EPC light comes on you won't have any idea WHAT it is. As with any foreign car: Expect expensive parts and limited service. Trading in a '01 V6 fully loaded Passat, I didn't want to give up any extras. I did not test drive the car on the interstate before buying.big mistake. The road noise is very noticable, much louder than what I'm used to. I keep turning up the radio to compensate. If I had it to do over, I probably would have looked more at a midsize car and checked for a quieter ride. If you're looking for a small car and can get past the road noise, it's a nice car. The car handles very well and I have the base 2.5L 5-cylinder engine which may not be race car fast but does the job. I notice that the car is very heavy for its class and I like this as it helps keep the car feeling more stable at highway speeds.Shop with Edmunds for perks and special offers on used cars, trucks, and SUVs near Rutland, ND.
