Small enough to be flown in the park yet fast enough to raise the pulse, the Spirit is the perfect grab n fly model, good looking, easily transported, easy to assemble, robust and and a hoot to fly, the Spirit is an awful lot of model for the money. Fast and Simple to Assemble Choice of Tractor or Pusher Configuration Tough EPO Foam Construction Removable wing for Easy Transportation All Moving Tail for Superior Control Supplied with Tools for Assembly.no glue required! Clip Together Wings and Tail for Easy Parts Replacement Superb Flight Performance Please, log in or register Please, sign in or sign up Easy bolt-together (two screws) wing, comprehensive fixing kit which allows for either front folding prop or top-mounted pod configurations. Even comes with an actually quite nice little screwdriver. Decals have to be applied and this is definitely the most time-consuming part of the build, it took me about 20 minutes with all the other parts being either plug together or screw in. In flight it's pretty stable once trimmed but not too fast; cuts though wind quite well. Other than that the only other things are buy several batteries - they only last around 4-6 minutes and you'll burn though them in no time. There's not much space and receiver install can be a challenge so going with servo end-pins is probably the best idea. Easy to fly, fast i stayble. Thanks HK - love this plane Fast, stable and fun. Good job HK five stars The foam looked nicely smooth and durable and the sticker went on well. Unfortunately when I screwed the main wing on, nothing was really true with this glider.

There was a huge angle between the vertical stabilizer and the main wing, so I cut down a bit from one side of the fuselage to make them even. Next thing I noticed is that the fuselage has no right angle to the main wing on mine, which bothered me before maiden. But maiden flight went exeptionally well. It tracks like on rails, rolls like crazy and goes up vertical without a limit. It's quite fast, but can also been flown pretty slow with no tip stalls so far. Only the motor gets quite hot, so I need to pause after one flight to let it cool down a bit before the fun begins again. Definitely recommended, if you don't care optimizing a bit with a cutter:-) Out of the box is pretty much does it all - it flies like it is on rails yet is highly agile if you want to do aero's. The standard motor has heaps or grunt to move the Spirit along at a rate of knots. The glider is not quite a hotliner but it certainly does not want for speed. I am using 3S 850mAh packs in mine for about 8 minutes of powered flight. On the slope with about 15kph of wind, the Sprit is a good sloper. I can't pick a fault with my Spirit Mini Glider. I recommend this one. Good job HK!! For sure it's not a hotliner but it is flying faster than expected. Nice plane for a fair price. There was hardly any winds. All went well, I used a 850 3S nanotech that goes in the front, and all the rest is underneaty (esc and my receiver). I didn't bother using any velcro; the receiver lies loose but cannot move around enough to matter. The 3S 850 nanotech fits snug in the front, it is very tight, and that is a good thing. CG is okay in that setup; I hardly trimmed any elevator. I did trim out the ailerons, it tended to roll somewhat. One thing I still need to fix is the ESC brake setting. The motor does not brake, so the prop keeps spinning (windmilling) even with throttle off. So I landed with a spinning prop, but it did not get damaged. Happy with this plane, will be taking it with me on vacation. Taking it apart and putting it back in the box is do-able. ESC got hot (warm anyway) on the bench, just feeding the receiver and servo's while setting things up. See how it will hold up after a few flights, maybe put in a slightly better ESC. I will have to see. I ordered 3 Lipo's 460mah 3S, and they fit perfect. Flying the glider is a piece of cake, track's like it's on rails. Very happy with it! The Spirit 100 ARF features a gorgeous fiberglass fuselage, Monokote covering, and full house controls. The finish features a white, red, orange, yellow, and black color scheme with solid red on the bottoms of the wing and stab. All these features come at a price that one might expect to pay for a very nice un-built kit, not an ARF. The airframe arrived well packed and free from any shipping damagem despite slight box damage. Clear black and white photos or drawings accompany nearly every step of the assembly. Checking lateral balance, safety, launching with hi-start and winch, initial flight trimming, advanced control mixes, thermal description and behavior, thermal soaring, slope soaring, and adding ballast are all covered in the manual. Given the manual quality, I won't cover every step of assembly here, just interesting highlights. The bottoms are covered entirely in red for contrast with the top and do a good job of aiding the visibility of the model in flight. A few wrinkles were present in the covering, but none that would not shrink out; very likely the result of temperature variations during shipping. I wasn?t compelled to replace any of the include hardware outright nor did I find any of the needed items missing. I chose a full-house setup with independent flaps and ailerons capable of the common full house sailplane mixes. Spoilers are unnecessary with this setup, but would be extremely useful with a five channel setup that uses Y connectors to the pairs of flap and aileron servos. Deploying flaps and spoilers would provide a very good facsimile of the ?crow? landing mix without requiring independently controlled servos on each aileron. The setup chosen will depend heavily on the available radio equipment and the ability of the pilot to setup and manage same. This step is one of the very few omitted from the manual. While I found no warps out of the box, I did create one or two while touching up some of the wrinkles in the covering. These were easily removed by twisting the panel in the opposite direction and shrinking out the resulting wrinkles before releasing the twist. It is very solid with a beautiful finish. Right down to the red accent stripes down each side. The rudder is mounted to the fin with three CA hinges in pre-cut slots. I dry-mounted both the stab and rudder and determined the control horn locations. Removed the rudder and stab, and mounted the control horns before permanently mounting the rudder. The Airtronics 92765 7-channnel receiver was placed through the spoiler servo opening in the pre-installed servo tray and attached to the bottom of the fuse with Velcro hook and loop fastening material. Two Airtronics standard size 94102 servos fit the radio tray very well. The 4-cell AA battery pack was a very tight fit going in, but there was enough room for the provided steel shot nose weight and some foam padding once the pack was in place. The receiver switch was mounted to the radio tray with screws instead of being glued in as per the instructions.Standard full house sailplane mixes were used. The control throws were setup per the high rate settings given in the instruction manual as dual rates were not used. The elevator rate was turned down to just a bit more than the recommended low rate after initial flight testing. The Airtronics Stylus was setup with launch, normal, reflex, and landing flight modes. Launch mode drops the flaps and ailerons just a bit to provide camber and just a touch of up elevator for the launch. Normal mode uses neutral positions on all control surface for regular flight. Reflex mode raises both flaps and ailerons slightly providing speed and penetration. Landing mode uses ?crow? mixing with the ailerons raised and flaps lowered. Additionally, down elevator is mixed in to prevent the nose of the airplane from rising when crow is deployed.Even the battery pack, a tight fit going in, provided room for the nose weight and foam padding once in place.Note the Airtronics RX slipped in under the radio tray and the interior end of the antenna tube. The center of gravity looks fairly far rearward, but most ARF center of gravity locations are usually safely forward of optimal, so I trusted the recommendation. The steel shot needed to balance the model was removed. Half of it was glued into the very nose of the fuselage. The other half I placed in a small heavy duty Ziploc baggie so that the CG could be adjusted during initial flight testing. There are three additional tow hook locations provided. The 6-32 blind nuts are preinstalled at each location and simply drilling the required size hole through the bottom of the fuselage is all that is needed to prepare any of the alternate locations for use.I doubt the fasteners themselves would fail under expected or even extreme flight or landing loads. However, I can see them pulling through the wing on a hard landing or crash. That said, the stock mounting screws have given me no problems over the course of a dozen or so flights. There was little, if any, flex in the wing panels during the tow when launched at a reasonable rate. It felt noticeably more solid than my Olympic II wing and is in a completely different league than the Gentle Lady that I also regularly winch launch. But, the launch angle was a bit flat and the plane should've been capable of a better launch than I was getting. The angle of the launch ascent was then noticeably steeper and higher as a result. The plane responded very well to rudder input when needed. Launch height was consistent with what one would expect from a sturdy wooden-winged sailplane. Straight and consistent launches were easily duplicated time after time. I have no reservations about winch launching the Spirit 100 ARF, provided the pilot knows how to properly use the winch. The Spirit 100 ARF responded to lift by clearly showing the pilot that it had just encountered same. The classic signs such as a wingtip suddenly rising and the plane being pushed in the direction of the low wing and changes in flight speed when entering rising air were noted. Most obvious was the Spirit 100?s lifting of the tail when it encountered a thermal. It may be the configuration of the tail feathers that makes this behavior so visually pronounced. I?ve never noticed it as dramatic on any other sailplane I?ve flown. The Spirit 100 ARF makes adjusting to aileron turns very easy. A gentle bank will get the plane turning. From there it is largely a matter of modulating the flight speed with the elevator. The Spirit 100 naturally follows the lift down wind as it circles. I never felt that I had to ?try? in order to stay with the lift. Addition of some wing camber when thermaling, maximizes the climb rate and slows things down a bit.The crow mix with down elevator compensation slows the Spirit 100 ARF to a crawl and provides a steady decent rate. The down elevator compensation pitches the nose of the plane down quite dramatically and takes some getting used to. The Spirit 100 does not dive at the ground like the downward pitching of the nose may suggest. The landing performance of the Spirit 100 ARF is a huge step forward for someone who normally uses a couple of clicks of down trim as a ?landing mode? setup. The Spirit 100 ARF flies a bit faster than your average wooden ?gas bag? from the late seventies. Control response is crisp throughout the plane?s flight speed envelope. The Spirit 100 ARF slows down very nicely with a bit of added camber when the flaps and ailerons are lowered and exhibits little or no change in the elevator trim when doing so. The reflex mode really gets the plane moving and will prove quite useful in escaping sinking air.Broadband clip.Dial-up clip. However, the complexity of setting up and managing a four or five channel sailplane takes the Spirit 100 ARF out of his hands. The Spirit 2M or Spectra ARFs would be better choices, with this as a second or third glider.Four flight modes controlled with one stick, three switches and four trimmers are a lot for an inexperienced pilot to keep track of. A six servo airframe is bound to be less forgiving of unintended ground contact than would a lighter two channel with wings retained using rubber bands.I?ve always gone back to a known and reliable two channel floater. The Spirit 100 ARF may have won me over to the full house setup. It had me feeling confident at the controls in no time. Its capabilities far eclipse those of two channel or three channel RES floaters. Knowing exactly what the plane is capable of will come with additional stick time and some tweaking of the control setup. In the meantime, I?ve been able to enjoy the wider flight envelope the design provides.Five color scheme of the Monokote covering. Ease of assembly. Flexibiltiy of control options. Flight performance. Complete package of quality hardware. Checking for and removing any warps in the flying surfaces not included in an otherwise top notch and complete manual.
