This text offers detailed information on the etiology, signs, symptoms, and treatment of more than 500 diseases and conditions, and also helps students discover how massage therapy influences the healing process. Organized by body system, the text features case histories in which people living and coping with many of the disease conditions covered in the text share their stories. This cornerstone book of the massage curriculum is also an invaluable reference and resource for a practicing therapists. It is the most comprehensive, visually appealing, and respected title to cover the pathologies that massage therapists must be familiar with. In the fifth edition, Ruth Werner's A Massage Therapist's Guide to Pathology features updated content to reflect new research on pathologies, and maintains the focus on not only explaining the disease, but also its applicability and indications in massage therapy. Throughout the book, the reader learns how massage influences disease and healing processes, and how massage therapists can offer clients maximum benefits while minimizing risks. osx! If you have earlier editions you will not have full access to the CD ROM portions of the text. The videos however will work. In addition If you decide to supplement the Fourth Edition and want to save money by purchasing the Fifth Edition in Kindle format; the Kindle format DOES NOT include the CD ROM portions of the book. It's laid out in an easy-to-follow format. It gives you the option to either read a short synopsis of key information about each disease, which is presented in small, blue text boxes throughout each chapter (great if you're making flashcards); or you have the option to read a more in-depth section about each disease. Puts the information in the context of massage therapy and discusses the risks and benefits of each disease in terms of massage.I am definitely going to keep this book around after I get my license. Very useful and informative. It covers most of the major things one would encounter as a massage therapist and how to handle those situations. However, the electronic version is a pain to use, and totally misses most of the opportunities that an e-book should offer. Totally useless. - The index just lists words. It's a useless list of what's in the book, with no help as to where to find it. It's the anti-index. Bonkers. - Table of contents, almost as useless. In desperation I started to laboriously highlight and bookmark the topic sections I study, in order to make my own sort of index. CRAZY! E-book technology offers lots of opportunities to amp up the usability and beauty of a reference like this one. All that potential, wasted and worse here. If I were Ruth Werner, I would be screaming bloody hell at the fools who have made her well-researched, respected handbook into such a clumsy dinosaur of an e-book.As a homeopathy practitioner I have found this book a great reference source. So glad I did. This book is easy to navigate and has terrific insights and information for massage therapists. Every therapist should have one in their library.I highly recommend to both students and those in practice. It certainly made my assignments easier to complete. The information is easy to read, with lots of great illustrations and pictures. I particularly like the pathology in brief, so that if you have a client on the phone or with you, then you can get the answer quickly if massage will benefit the client or not. I would definitely recommend getting this book and I regularly use it in my busy practice - Well done Ruth!Has quickly become one of the first items that goes into my treatment bag. Worth every penny. This is a good study aid and informative reference book for both student and therapist. It gives very detailed information regarding different illnesses and conditions and whether massage is recommended or even possible with certain conditions. I think it will be very useful in dealing with clients with differing needs and health conditions.Clear concise and easy to understand, no jargon. Useful photos for many common ailments too.In order to navigate out of this carousel please use your heading shortcut key to navigate to the next or previous heading. PT 1.0 out of 5 stars I prefer the way this one is layed out to the newer ones. While certainly not an authoritative medical text, it is a concise, easy to understand and well organized book that belongs on the shelf of every massage therapist. The one item that is sorely lacking is any bibliography. Even some basic references for those seeking clarification or more information would be a great addition. My other suggestion would be to include a pictorial guide to common skin conditions. As therapists we often encounter skin pathologies that we are not familiar with. While of course we can not diagnose, this addition would be helpful for those concerned with the appropriateness of massage for a particular client or the possibility of being exposed to a contagious pathogen. This is completely counterintuitive. Instead, the pathologies are listed somewhere in the front (and only there). I still don't understand how a publisher can print a book with an index that excludes the most essential content. Encephalopathy is in the index. Encephalitis is not. I have to go to the front of the book for that to find the page number. It defies logic. Many of the pathologies included don't make much sense where they are (ie, scleroderma is listed as a muskuloskeletal disease). This is the 4th edition dated 2009 which for me is up to date sufficiently. Although my primary practice is energy work, I still need to know and have the client's physical manifestations in mind. Knowing conditions helps share the nuts and bolts with the client without getting too heavy into medical terminology.I just attended her continuing education class in Louisiana and can truly say that this woman is remarkable. I immediately came home and ordered this 4th edition book. Wow, has it grown. The book is everything I expected and needed. The information is so clear and easy to understand and would be very helpful to anyone who has a interest in pathology.Used as a reference quite frequentlyIf you get a copy without the printers errors then it is an excellent book, i'm still waiting for mine though.Ruth Werner I bought this Pathology book second hand, as it was considerably much cheaper. It is great, very pleased with my purchase. The book presents detailed information on the etiology, signs and symptoms, and treatment of over 200 diseases and conditions, emphasizing how massage influences the disease and healing processes and how therapists can maximize the benefits while minimizing the risks. I have been teaching in the field for over 10 years. What I appreciate about this book is that each chapter is dedicated to individual systems of the body. Each chapter starts with a brief review of each system. These reviews are contained in approximately 3 to 4 pages. Then we delve into the pathologic conditions pertaining to the individual systems. An outline is provided prior to this. In addition to a very informative text on each condition, a thumbnail review is presented in the margins outlining the bare essentials of each pathological condition. The artwork is first rate, as are the photographs. This is invaluble. I can't find any flaws with this book. Massage Therapy is aimed at helping the body move to a more balanced state. This book is an invaluable tool for assisting the massage therapist, whether student or veteran, to better work toward that aim. It is also a carreer saver in that the knowledge contained in these pages could keep you from accidentally causing harm when you meant only to aid. A 600 hour class, even an associates degree in massage, can not impart all the many things you might one day encounter in your carreer. Verisign. This book presents information on over 200 diseases and conditions, showing how massage influences the disease and healing processes, and how therapists can improve benefits by decreasing risks. It also features line drawings and photographs of skin conditions. This is NOT a book for lay persons. But, it is an amazing reference book. It really helps to be able to refer to different disorders and see what to do about massage and other medical treatments for the disorder. I would highly recommend this. I love the detail they go into about the pathology and whether massage is contraindicated or not. Verisign.
