By 'gentle' I mean that the features are presented practically with examples; as we encounter difficulties, I hope to show how Rust solves these problems. It is important to understand the problems before the solutions make sense. To put it in flowery language, we are going for a hike in hilly country and I will point out some interesting rock formations on the way, with only a few geology lectures. There will be some uphill but the view will be inspiring; the community is unusually pleasant and happy to help. There is the Rust Users Forum and an active subreddit which is unusually well-moderated. The FAQ is a good resource if you have specific questions. First, why learn a new programming language. It is an investment of time and energy and that needs some justification. Even if you do not immediately land a cool job using that language, it stretches the mental muscles and makes you a better programmer. That seems a poor kind of return-on-investment but if you're not learning something genuinely new all the time then you will stagnate and be like the person who has ten years of experience in doing the same thing over and over. Where Rust Shines Rust is a statically and strongly typed systems programming language. So the uses are pretty hardcore: operating systems, device drivers and embedded systems that might not even have an operating system. However, it's actually a very pleasant language to write normal application code in as well. The big difference from C and C is that Rust is safe by default; all memory accesses are checked. It is not possible to corrupt memory by accident.

Big Time Timmy Jim 3.0 out of 5 stars It was relatively low price for a crypto book. The general topics were pretty straightforward and easy to understand for a software developer. The first half of the book is about crypto currencies and how they work. The second half of the book has a bunch of code from the author’s rust crypto library. And if you don’t know rust you won’t know what’s going on. Now the writing, I’m sorry for the author, but he should have paid for a proofreader. There are a ton of misspellings and grammatical mistakes that make it very hard to read. The content was very succinct and to the point, but I had to read between the lines because the errors made me read over a sentence 10 times to get it. Additionally, if you’re the author, please use a screenshot app rather than taking pictures of the screen. And have them at higher quality, they were stretched in weird ways and made them hard to read and look at. Overall, content was good for crypto currency basics. The coding part would have been better to be pointed at a github repo with documentation. The writing and screenshots made it seem like it needed some editing passes and hard to read. Pros: - succinct - well priced - good explanations Cons: - really hard to read sometimes - screenshots for diagrams - Code part of book didn’t flow wellThe information seems like it was stripped from an online blog! All the information inside of the book can be found online. This is the undisputed go-to guide to Rust, written by two members of the Rust core team, with feedback and contributions from 42 members of the community. The book assumes that you’ve written code in another programming language but makes no assumptions about which one, meaning the material is accessible and useful to developers from a wide variety of programming backgrounds. Known by the Rust community as “The Book,” The Rust Programming Language includes concept chapters, where you’ll learn about a particular aspect of Rust, and project chapters, where you’ll apply what you’ve learned so far to build small programs. The Book opens with a quick hands-on project to introduce the basics then explores key concepts in depth, such as ownership, the type system, error handling, and fearless concurrency. Next come detailed explanations of Rust-oriented perspectives on topics like pattern matching, iterators, and smart pointers, with concrete examples and exercises--taking you from theory to practice. The Rust Programming Language will also show you how to: - Grasp important concepts unique to Rust, like ownership, borrowing, and lifetimes - Use Cargo, Rust’s built-in package manager, to build and maintain your code, including downloading and building dependencies - Effectively use Rust’s zero-cost abstractions and employ your own You’ll learn to develop reliable code that’s speed and memory efficient, while avoiding the infamous and arcane programming pitfalls common at the systems level. When you need to dive down into lower-level control, this guide will show you how without taking on the customary risk of crashes or security holes and without requiring you to learn the fine points of a fickle toolchain. You’ll also learn how to create command line programs, build single- and multithreaded web servers, and much more. The Rust Programming Language fully embraces Rust’s potential to empower its users. This friendly and approachable guide will help you build not only your knowledge of Rust but also your ability to program with confidence in a wider variety of domains. Prakash 5.0 out of 5 stars On time delivery as expected. It is amazing. Very friendly book. Not friendly enough so noob programmers can read it. But friendly enough that people coming from Java or Python can easily pick it.Looking forward to the second edition! If you want to learn Rust just as I did, this book is perfect for it, you'll need a lot of practice besides this book, don't expect to be an expert, but it does provides a lot of information and you can always come to the book when you encounter a problem and look for an example. Totally recommended! This is a relatively new concept to gaming, where game developers release games still in development onto the market, allowing players to help shape the game’s development while raising funding for the developers to continue working on the game. It is inspired by both DayZ and Minecraft. The object of the game is to work with other players online in order to survive a zombie-infested world. Jan 4 - 19This is the second edition of the improved version of the free online Rust book, so well-loved in the Rust community that it is simply referred to as 'the Book'. This book will show readers how to use Rust's robust type system to keep programs memory-safe and speedy, and make the most of the Cargo package manager that brings the pieces of a program together. The reader will learn all about Rust's ownership rules, which lie at the heart of Rust's reliability and crash-resistant compiling. The Rust Programming Language covers everything from basic concepts like variable bindings, control flow, functions, and error handling, to more advanced topics, such as crates, generics, concurrency, and the nitty gritty of Rust's type system. With improved organization, hands-on features, and a more tutorial-oriented style, this version offers a vast improvement over the original. The second edition also provides an entirely new chapter on macros and an expanded chapter on crates, two key aspects of Rust that make it so popular. Readers will also find extra appendices on Rust development tools and Rust versions. Stefan 5.0 out of 5 stars It may be freely available in electronic form elsewhere (including the actual Rust website), but I’ve always found paper books to be a better learning tool than anything read from a screen.Unfortunately the binding is appalling. The first arrived with the binding already falling apart and the second fell off before I got to the contents page. Given the content is freely available but many developers will prefer to support the author and have a paper reference, the publisher is doing a huge disservice by cheaping out on the binding. For the price it's not acceptable. You do need a bit of programming experience first, but it's not too daunting if you are ok at least at any one language. This is the first book in ages that I've actually wanted to keep reading, I'm about half way through, and learning a lot. It's all introduced at about the right pace, and doesn't dwell on anything too much to bore you. Definitely should be added if you want to learn about Rust.I bought it for my older brother, who's studying programming. I'm sorry I can't tell you for sure how good the book is in that regard, but since it was the first thing in the list of possible Christmas gifts he'd like for this year, I assume it must be important!I have to say, this is by far the best I've read, and really in keeping with my whole experience of rust thus far. So unless someone else specifically says it's good, I would be cautious. Maybe you find a good way to convert the book itself to a better format using Calibre. What I did was open the website of the book in Chrome on my laptop, opened the printable version and saved it as a PDF with a page size smaller than 'letter' (I think, A5). It worked great, but I encourage you to buy the book anyway to support its maintenance. I tried compiling the book before and it seemed to be missing some of the formatting I've seen on my ereader with purchased copies. Also did you mean to link Extinction Rebellion three times. I found the best to read it with horizontal kindle instead of vertical, otherwise the fond was a bit too small for my linking (but still usable i would say). It's sad that his isn't the standard for books - probably Amazon wanted to train us to have different expectations unlike at CDs. The larger screen makes a world of difference to reading. Otherwise I've had excellent luck with using Reader mode in Firefox to set up the look, then print-to-pdf at the required size. Important to note is you should either: Buy it from Amazon, or Convert No Starch's ePub to KFX using Calibre (this is what I did) The mobi file distributed by No Starch has some code samples that are basically unreadable. The selection on Kindle Unlimited is shockingly bad. Amazon seems to have been completely unable to persuade authors or publishers to join the program. There is no easy way to see which books in your Amazon or Audible Wish Lists are Unlimited eligible. Amazon does nothing to match the books that I’ve previously purchased or have put in my Wish list with books available through Kindle Unlimited. There is no Kindle Unlimited recommendation engine. There were numerous pages missing -- you'd be reading a sentence only to go to the next page and find the rest missing, or it would start with a totally new topic, or worse yet the middle of a new topic. In addition, there were duplicate pages and duplicate illustrations back to back in many places. It made the book incoherent and is a very sloppy product. Maybe the hardcover version is prepared acceptably, but this was a huge disappointment.Lots of information on artists and guides to the museums themselves. Wish there were more women impressionists covered in the book but it’s overall a fantastic read. It's a wonderful book.
