I like the GT-8 for its low- to mid-gain sounds, its effects and its flexibility. I have never liked any of the Line6 modelers for anything but high-gain sounds. I had a Vox Tonelab that I retired when I bought the GT-8. I strongly recommend that you read the manual cover-to-cover at least once. It's a reference manual, not a tutorial, so a lot of things won't make sense on the first read. The real benefit of pushing through is that you'll later (as you're puzzling your way through the interface) be able to recognize that you read something that might help. All of the editors are created by third parties.) The GT-8 has level metering at every stage. Read the manual and find out how to use the meters. Make sure that the level at every stage hangs out at around 70 or so of full-scale. Make especially certain that you never pin the level at any stage - you will get nasty distortion under that condition. As I said above, the effects are really good. They track well, but Boss's waveform splicing leaves a lot to be desired; you will hear artifacts. Digitech does better pitch-based effects. The tuner is surprisingly good. I originally intended to use my Peterson VS-F along with the GT-8, but the 8's tuner is good enough that I haven't felt the need to use the Peterson. Avoid the temptation to apply Roland's firmware update. Quite a few owners have turned their GT-8 into an expensive doorstop through procedural errors or MIDI-adapter problems while loading the update. Roland will not cover damage to your GT-8 caused by a botched firmware update. (I think it's ridiculous that they couldn't at least devise an idiot-proof update procedure.) The last update is several years old, so if you buy new you'll be getting the latest firmware anyhow. And if you do happen to get old firmware, living with the bugs - as I recall, they are few in number and obscure - is almost certainly your best bet. Regarding DIs: If you carry your own (instead of relying on the house to provide one - or two if you'll be running stereo) a simple passive DI is just fine. Get yourself some kind of carry bag that fits the GT-8, power supply, cables and DI. Boss GT Central sells a really nice one. Boss also sells one. If you shop around you can probably find a small keyboard bag that'll fit the GT-8 for about half the cost. It took me about eight hours (five of those spent pre-purchase) to really understand the GT-8. That was time well-spent. I love walking into a gig with the guitar case in one hand and the GT carry bag slung over my shoulder. Gone are the days of wrestling a 100-pound cart of gear up and down stairs, into and out of the car, and over curbs and thresholds. I've given up nothing in terms of sound. I took the GT-8 and my Traynor K4 (300-watt stereo keyboard amp) to a gear fest back in April. The rig acquitted itself quite nicely in a room full of vintage, custom and boutique amps. I have to admit that I've had a knee-jerk reaction to modelers based upon my past experiences. Up through 2005 I tried and owned a lot of different modeling products and was never fully satisfied with any of them. That Vox Tonelab I mentioned was purchased in October 2005, just months before the GT-8 started shipping. I was never able to get a decent sound out of the Tonelab through my own speakers. The one in the store sounded fine. Maybe there are unit-to-unit differences (could be, because of the tube) or perhaps I didn't listen critically enough in the store (also very possible). Anyway, the Tonelab sat on my desk, unused, for over a year before I finally ditched it. I was happy with the sound of my Vibro-King with my small pedal board. I tolerated the weight of that rig only because of the way it sounded. I didn't even bother to consider the GT-8 when it was new, based upon my past experience with the GT-6. I prefer warm clean tones and I couldn't adjust the GT-6 to create a sound that pleased my ears. I spent over a year completely avoiding modelers. I didn't want to waste my time with another product that - past experience told me - was likely to be marginally useful. The thing that eventually drove me to the GT-8 was my search for a lightweight substitute for the Vibro-King. I was targeting tube amps with a maximum weight of 40 pounds. Sound-wise, none of those amps was really compelling. I tried the flagship Line6 and Vox floor processors, neither one of which really made my ears perk up. It was in frustration that I turned to the GT-8, my last untried choice from one of the Big Three in modeling. I honestly didn't expect much. I spent an hour poking at the store demo unit without a manual. That was enough time to figure out the basics of editing an programming and to set up a patch that I'd consider usable. That night I went home and downloaded and read the GT-8 manual. The next day I spent four more hours at the store (it helps to cultivate a good relationship with long-time sales staff at a local store) with my own guitar, the GT-8 and the store's copy of the manual, learning many of the finer points of programming and sound design and putting together a patch that I could be happy playing. Then I had them set up a portable PA; I spent my last hour at the store playing through the PA: quiet, loud, clean, dirty, dry, wet, fingerpicking, jazzy stuff, power chords, big rock tones, everything I'd normally play at the volumes I'd normally play. And it all hung together beautifully, without a single tube anywhere in the signal chain. I was surprised. But I had also put the rig through its paces for long enough to believe that I wasn't going to be disappointed. It's usually during the first few hours at home that I decide whether a new amp or pedal will be a keeper. This time I spent those hours on someone else's dime. Maybe I am getting smarter in my old age. Since then I've spent only a couple more hours tweaking, mostly to discover what else is in the GT-8 for which I might find a use someday. I use one patch for 99.9 of my playing. I have a couple of nice Fender-ish amp models - one close to my VK, the other close to my Twin Reverb) and some favorite stompboxes selectable on individual switches. Not having to deal with aging and microphonic tubes and line voltage variations is a big win. And at under 20 pounds ready-to-carry (the board, bag, cables, power supply and DI), it's a lot easier to lug than my old rig. There are not many places around here where I can't plug into the house board. For the gigs where I need to provide my own sound system, I have a portable PA (the same one I demoed in the store) and a keyboard amp. To me, it's much better than the others in the same market space. Maybe because it says Boss on it, its lumped in with the idea that its old technology or out of date or something, but that is certainly not the case. But every once in a while, I use the onboard amp sounds into my amp set clean and it sounds great. Definitely check out the Boss GT forum. There are really nice folks there that will help you through any issue with the unit. Also, I don't have experience with it, but I hear that if you want the best out of the amp sounds on the GT-8, there is a little unit called the Harmonic Generator (I think) that really improves the quality of the amp tones in the GT-8.
