Lensbabys Optic Swap System is a completely unique approach to lens design. If you arent already an Optic Swap System user then the idea of having modular, interchangeable optics might be a little foreign. Standard camera lenses have the optic permanently fixed the lens, so to shoot with a different optic you have to put on a new lens. An optic and body together make a complete camera lens. This system provides an array of creative options with less gear to purchase and lug around. What is a Composer series lens. There are three generations of Lensbaby Composer lenses - the Composer, the Composer Pro, and the Composer Pro II. All Composer series lenses are simply tiltable housings on a ball and socket mechanism that mount directly to your camera. Choose the lens body that fits your camera system. If you shoot Canon, you get the Canon version. Nikon, the Nikon. Sony E, the Sony E. you get the picture. If you're interested in tilt, selective focus photography to produce images that have either a spot or slice of focus, here's your starting point. You must have a Composer series lens AND an Optic in order to shoot. A Composer series lens by itself just looks like this - empty. The 2nd decision you have to make when buying a Composer series lens is which Optic you want. When you buy a Composer series lens, it comes WITH an Optic of your choice installed - choose your optic based on effect and focal length. Once you own a Composer series lens with an Optic installed, you can purchase other Optics and swap them out to change effect and focal length. Keep in mind - you cannot use an Optic by itself, and you cannot use a Composer series lens with no Optic installed. The differences between the three generations of Composers are incremental improvements - more metal parts, smoother tilt and focus, as well as slightly less tilt in the Composer Pro II (which prevents accidentally tilting so far that nothing is in focus, making it a good thing to have less tilt.) This modular lens system lets you experiment with several creative looks and focal lengths while keeping things compact and affordable. You dont need to buy a whole new lens in order to get a different focal length or effect. Your choice of Optics is as follows: The other Optics dont require the push. To insert a new Optic, simply follow these steps: Find out more about the Optic Swap Kit.By using this site, you agree to its use of cookies. I AGREE. I have had a blast learning how to use it and figuring out different ways to photograph our lives with it. Below are a few lessons I’ve learned from using my Lensbaby. This lens requires you to use manual focus. Please don’t let this scare you from buying a lens that requires manual focus. It has actually proved to be a fun and challenging exercise. I like being challenged when it comes to photography and this lens does that. You can turn this lens to create different effects. Until you become super comfortable with the lens I recommend keeping it centered so you get used to the manual focus. If you are stuck in a rut, I have always suggested shooting with a different lens. This one will definitely spark your creativity and give your images a new look and feel. By challenging yourself with a lens that isn’t like your everyday lens you may see things quite differently. You can turn an everyday snap shot into a fun and unique image with a Lensbaby. For example, the image below I took with my everyday lens and then put on my Lensbaby. The Lensbaby give it a fun and completely different feel than the other lens. Simply tilt the lens to a desired angle and then focus with a traditional barrel focusing ring. Lensbaby lenses let your creativity soar. The images you make with them are so unique that it is difficult to reproduce them by yourself. Eventually, you will learn to pre-visualize your scene in “Lensbaby,” knowing where you want the focus to fall, and what part of the frame will disintegrate into blur. However, you can tilt the lens (like a tilt-shift lens) which allows the photographer to shift the area of focus in the image they make. This means that you will have to manually set the aperture of the lens and manually focus your lens. The Composer Pro has a part that attaches to your camera (they make mounts that suit all major brands), a part that attaches to the lens optic, and a tilting mechanism between them (which is really a ball joint). Double Glass optic has aperture discs that you can exchange using a little magnetic tool. Enter the Lensbaby Spark, to which I frequently refer to as the “Gateway Lensbaby.” The Spark is a one-piece Lensbaby that has an optic already attached to an accordion-type tilting mechanism.I had mine for exactly 3 days before I realized that I loved the images I was making and I was ready to jump all in. I then bought a Composer Pro with Sweet 35 optic. Thus, my love affair with Lensbaby began. While this sounds daunting at first, learning manual focus will improve your photography, period. It is a great skill to have, and it is most certainly something that improves with practice. However, this slight variation will make a big difference when focusing manually, so take notice of which eye you prefer to focus with. Some time ago, I got a Hoodman HoodEYE cup, which is bigger than the standard eye cup that is included with cameras. It does a great job preventing stray light from entering the viewfinder and, because it is not symmetrical, it reminds me to use my left eye to focus. While this is not my preferred method, I have certainly used it more than once. When previewing your scene on the LCD in Liveview, the brightness of this image is determined by your camera (this is called “Exposure simulation”). If your LCD image appears too dark when you are using Liveview, you will have to disable exposure simulation under your menu options to get a nice, bright image. Very few photographers, even if quite experienced, make amazing Lensbaby images straight out of the box. When I got my Sweet 35 optic, I loved it right away. However, my Edge 80 took some time getting used to: to be exact, a month of shooting exclusively with the Edge 80. Ultimately, it was worth it, and the Edge 80 is my favorite optic of the two. You will make some great images by accident in the beginning, but the real skill that comes with practice is making a Lensbaby image that truly matches your vision. Just don’t do it! You will hate your Lensbaby, your children, or both. Start off with inanimate subjects or (willing) adult models. I will be leading a small group session, as well as hands-on practice sessions, and a Lensbaby photowalk in Salt Lake City. The Lensbaby Spark creates images with a sharp spot of focus surrounded by beautiful blur. Bend, squeeze and stretch the lens to focus your shot. Express your creativity and capture the magic of everyday moments with the Lensbaby Spark. Available in Canon EF and Nikon F mounts. Her love for Lensbaby lenses began in January 2013. She loves many genres, including street, urban, macro, and nature photography, and, of course, capturing the details in lives of her two boys. She shoots mostly prime lenses, but never leaves her house without one of her Lensbaby lenses. To remedy the sometime too dark screen, I’ll often focus at an incorrect exposure level (that would give me an overexposed image) then change to the proper exposure before taking the shot. I think that the charm of a good LB image is very endearing! I have been wanting to know how to get started with a lensbaby, from shopping to shooting. I hope to get one someday and feel like I have a little direction now!! Awesome post! I got so much out of this post, including the manual focusing tips. I am ready to take the leap into Lensbaby too, and I am excited about the possibilities! I bought the Lensbaby Scout which came with a fisheye optic but I would love to try out one of the other lensbaby’s where you actually bend it. The scout does not bend so everything is always centered. My husband will not be impressed. Haha! Love this blog post! ?? I certainly can’t use my 50mm for everything (especially because I’m using a crop sensor and so it acts more like an 80mm). The Edge 80 is on my list! I’m a wedding photographer and can’t wait to deliver some unique shots for my brides ( with lots of practice first, of course). I love your image shares. The image with the woman lying down is a gorgeous capture. I might just grab one (or, perhaps WIN one?!?!) I thought that might be a fun way to dip my toe in the Lensbaby water:0) Caroline Jensen got a “try-out” copy and she loved it! I’ve recently received a new to me composer and I can’t wait to start creating some awesome images. It’s the Sigma 30mm! ?? I’m dying to try one! I like the versatility and the fact that I can do macros with it too. My favorite lens is my 50mm 1.4! I would never have considered doing that with a lensbaby!! Some of my favorite images I’ve taken over the last few months have been with my Spark. Like you Nina, it’s not often I leave home without it. It’s so light it doesn’t way me down or get in the way. It definitely is a gateway lens too. I better warn my husband early that the Composer Pro, Edge 80 and Sweet 35 are going to comprise my entire Christmas list! I have always thought I would like to try one of these! Super excited! Right now my favorite lens is my 50. They are so creative and fun! I keep going back and forth about the LensBaby. It’s not my style, but I really like the images I see with it, but it’s not my style, etc. What am I talking about. I don’t have a style yet. I should just get one and try it out. ?? A lensbaby would be divine! I’ve been wanting to give a lensbaby a try and you just have me that extra push I needed. Thanks! It seems like the effects you can achieve with this lens are endless. Can’t wait to get my hands on one. This is definitely on my must get list. My current favorite is my 50mm 1.8 Soooo helpful. My dream favorite is an ultra wide angle. I am still learning and would love to experiment with it all. Timely and helpful info! Thanks!! The lens baby would be much safer lol It is still on my wish list ?? My favourite (and only) lens is my Sigma 35 1.4 ?? Would love to try a lensbaby again. I can see why you say not to practice with a Lensbaby on a moving subject as it is hard enough to get my 2 year-old in focus sometimes with this lens. I would love to try one though as I love me some good bokeh! My favorite lens changes a lot, but my 40mm is almost always on my camera. Lensbaby lenses really push creativity and help you look outside the box (or frame). So beautiful! Thanks! Thanks, Nina! I’ve been wanting to try a Lensbaby! Thanks. I am ready to dive into the Lensbaby world for sure!!!! Thank you! I really want a nice one but not in the budget. Gorgeous work and great tips! They seem like a lot of fun ?? Thanks for the great article. Hoping to add a lensbaby to my gear soon. My current favorite lens is the 135L. I have been trying out a tilt-shift, but I would absolutely love a lensbaby! I am signed up for your small group but am wait listed for the trip (hope I get in!). Fabulous things ahead! My current fav lens is 70-200. So tack sharp ?? I have had such a massive 3 years of “life”. When I bought this lens and really took it to work it was a therapy in its self. I plan to purchase another and at some point some accessories. If you are into doing Art photography, this lens is the cats meow. If you are a people photographer this lens is the slice of cheese your looking for in a wow statement to your clients. What I like most of all is the quality of the pictures. All I do is lightroom and some tweak. I can go on and on about how amazing this lens is, so just go buy one and you’ll know its awesomeness. Yesterday we “taught” (natural) him how to fish. Would love to have a Lensbaby! I am also newly discovering my Composer Pro with Double Glass.Would love to try a lensbaby!! I am sure it will quickly become a favorite! Would love to try out the spark! I have always wondered what the difference was with the various optics. You have cleared it up. Thank you! My favorite (non-Lensbaby) lens is my 35mm. My favorite Lensbaby, at least in appearance anyway, is the Edge 80, followed by the Sweet 35. Either one of those would be fantastic to have! I’d love to win a Lensbsby Spark. They make me swoon! I just never have the money. I read that their Sweet 35 is actually a 56mm on a crop sensor. Is this true for all of their lenses, that the focal length is like a regular lens for Nikon. An inspirational journey into the world of digital inkjet printing. The lens adjusts the optical path accordingly, ensuring that any type of motion blur is corrected before the sensor captures the image. 2. optical zoom 1x 1x The zoom range is the ratio between the longest and shortest focal lengths. It also provides a shallow depth of field, allowing you to blur the background to focus attention on the subject. 2. widest aperture at maximum focal length 1.2f 2.5f With a wider aperture the sensor can capture more light, helping to avoid blur by enabling a faster shutter speed. Rounded blades, often only found on more expensive lenses, improve the appearance of the out-of-focus areas. This allows you to attain better, softer looking bokeh in your photos. 4. aperture blades 9 12 The aperture controls how much light gets through to the camera’s sensor. More blades is often an indicator of a better quality lens. It also allows you to achieve much nicer looking bokeh when blurring out your background, whereas a lens with less blades will often produce harsher, more polygonal bokeh. 5. smallest aperture at maximum focal length 16f 22f A smaller aperture reduces the amount of light reaching the sensor. This is important in bright conditions where a wider aperture could result in your image being overexposed. Another advantage is that with a smaller aperture you get a greater depth of field, and can keep all of the image in focus. 6. smallest aperture at minimum focal length 16f 22f A smaller aperture reduces the amount of light reaching the sensor. This means that you can make manual adjustments once the AF has finished, without changing to manual mode. 5. minimum focus distance 0.35m 0.38m This is the closest distance that the lens can focus. A shorter minimum focus distance allows you to get closer to your subject, and is particularly important when doing macro photography. Now Lensbaby offers a full product line complete with interchangeable optics and a pro lens. The Lensbaby is the brainchild of Craig Strong, a wedding and journalistic photographer. He used Holga and Diana cameras to get soft, dreamy photographs when he used film. Then came digital, which, as we all know, changed everything. When he couldn’t find a commercially available lens to replicate this look, he decided to make his own. He started out with a Nikon mount, a simple optic, and some vacuum cleaner hose. He refined it until he had a commercially viable product. Actually, it was like a juggling act. You pulled on the outer ring of the lens to focus, and then tilted it to one side to change where the sweet spot of focus appeared in the image. It took a lot of getting used to, but many loved the Muse and got great images with it. It was still manual focus, and you had to manually change the aperture disc to change the size of the sweet spot of focus — but you could focus the lens by twisting the outer barrel. And it was also much easier to tilt the lens to change the sweet spot of focus. To this day, it remains the most popular lens that Lensbaby offers. This black beauty gives the photographer more precise control when focusing and when tilting the lens to change the sweet spot of focus. The Composer Pro's metal swivel ball design delivers ultra-smooth focus and tilt control. The Double Glass Optic, a 50mm selective focus optic with drop-in aperture discs, provides a tack-sharp Sweet Spot of focus with minimum diffusion at all aperture settings.
