These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference when the equipment is operated in a commercial environment. This equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instruction manual, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. These fea- tures are all located on the Addresses menu and can be accessed from almost anywhere in the program. Administering users User management This option is only available when you are running in non-NetWare mode and only when you have run Pegasus Mail with a username that has administrator privileges. It opens the Pegasus Mail user management dialog, allowing you to create, delete and rename new mail users on the system. If you selected Single user mode (as opposed to Multi-user or Network modes) the first time you ran Pegasus Mail, you will not see this option. Default messages It is possible to create mail messages that will be copied into the new mail folder of any new user you create with this dialog. These messages will then be waiting for the user the first time he runs the program. To create a default message, edit a text file with any name and the extension.DMI in the same directory as WINPM-32.EXE. The.DMI file should be plain text and should be formatted as a proper Internet Mail message (send yourself a message to use as a template for this). Pegasus Mail copies any.DMI files when creating a new user if the Copy default mail messages control is checked in the User details dialog. The Local User list Pegasus Mail uses NetWare usernames as mail addresses and offers the local user list to look them up in the file server’s user database. You can open the local user list at any time by se- lecting it from theAddresses menu or by pressing the key. To list all users on the server simply leave the field blank and click the Search button. The list displays the user’s NetWare user- name at the left and his personal name (if any) on the right. Pegasus Mail will paste the Net- Ware username into the address field when requested. Depending on your system’s configura- tion, you might or might not be allowed to mail to NetWare user groups: if you are not per- mitted to mail to groups then nogroups will show. Showing users on other servers You can use the local address list to lookup users on any server accessible to you via Pegasus Mail. The Server field is a drop-down list which contains all the servers available to you. To lookup users on another server, choose that server from the list, enter a search string and click the Search button. Note: At this stage, this option is only available when operating with Pegasus Mail’s Net- Ware Bindery mode personality module. Selecting addresses You can select addresses from the local user list by clicking on them. To select multiple addresses, hold down the Ctrl key while you click on each entry, or hold down the Shift key and drag the mouse to select a group of sequential addresses from the list. To paste the addresses into the last address field you were using, click the Paste button. Alternatively, you can drag the addresses to any text field in Pegasus Mail by clicking on one of the addresses, holding the mouse button down, dragging them to the place you want to ap- pear, then “dropping” them there by releasing the mouse button. This process, called drag 8: Other addressing aids 103Address books and Distribution listsand drop will even allow you to paste addresses into the Windows notepad program and intosome other Windows programs. You can leave the local user list open and bring other windows to the front at any time byclicking in them. You can search for users as often as you wish simply by typing in a newsearch pattern and pressing. The local user list can display a maximum of 500 en-tries. The system manager on the server may wish to restrict the ability ofusers from other servers to lookup users on the server so you may be prevented from perform-ing the search in some cases.Address books and Distribution listsPegasus Mail provides a comprehensive and powerful address booksystem you can use tostore names, addresses and other contact details about people. It also provides powerful fa-cilities for easily managing large lists of addresses called Distribution lists. Both of these fea-tures are covered in detail in the previous chapter. The Logged-in user listPegasus Mail offers a list of users currently logged-in to the NetWare server when you selectLogged-in users from the Addresses menu, or when you press. You can use the list asan address list in the same way as the local user list and can paste and drag addresses from itin the same way. You can also send short one-line broadcast messages to the people shownin the list by clicking the Send button. When you click on Send a small window will openasking for the message to send, which cannot exceed 50 characters in length. The MHS directory service option gives you access to addressinformation maintained by MHS on your server. Youshould only keep the directory services window open for the shortest possible time, becausewhile it is open, NetWare MHS will be unable to update the file with new information. 104 9: Notepads Creating and working with notepads 9: Notepads Pegasus Mail’s Notepad facility allows you to jot down notes, and paste text from your mail messages conventiently within the program. To create a notepad, click the New button and enter a name for the new notepad. If you decide you no longer need a notepad, click on its name in the list then press the Delete button. The right-hand side of the Notepad window displays the text currently stored in the notepad you have selected in the notepad list. To display the contents of any notepad, simply click on its name. Any changes made to the current notepad are saved automatically. You may enter up to 30,000 characters of text into each notepad, and may cut and paste between notepads and messages just as you would normally do, using the options on the Edit menu. Finally, you can print any notepad by opening it then clicking the Print button. You can save the text in any notepad to a file on your hard disk by clicking on that notepad then clicking the Export button. Text exported from a notepad can usually be read into almost any program, including word processors and mail programs. You can also read the contents of any text file on your system into a notepad by clicking the Import button. The messages posted on notice-boards have almost all the characteristics of mail messages — they can have attachments, canbe encrypted, and when you post them, you can keep copies for yourself, just as with mail.To use the noticeboard feature, choose Noticeboards from the File menu or click the pinboardicon in the toolbar. If there are any noticeboards in which you have permission to browse, alist window which looks rather like a folder window will open. The name of the current no-ticeboard appears in the title of the window, and to the right of the title you may also see eitherthe text Read-only, which means that you are allowed to examine the notices in this notice-board but not post new notices, or if you have been designated as an administrator for the no-ticeboard, the word Administrator. A noticeboard administrator can create new noticeboardsand delete messages within the current noticeboard. The list itself can contain either messages, or other noticeboards. If you select a noticeboardand click the Open button then that noticeboard will open and become the current notice-board. Selecting a notice and clicking the Open button will display the notice in a familiarreader window. Pegasus Mail remembers the notices you have read from session to session, and will place a checkmark next to notices you have read in the list. Pegasus Mail’s noticeeditor is almost exactly the same as a message editor except that you cannot change the Tofield. All the normal message editor options are available including the glossary, the spellingchecker, cut and paste and so forth, and you can add attachments to the notice just as youwould with a mail message. Pegasus Mail automatically fills in the To: field of the messagewith the current noticeboard. You can post your notice to the noticeboard by clicking the Sendbutton or by pressing.Following up and replyingA Followup to a notice is like a reply to a mail message, except that it is posted to the noti-ceboard for everyone to see. Think of a followup as your contribution to an ongoing conver-sation within a noticeboard. You can followup on a notice by highlighting it in the list andpressing, or by clicking on the Followup button. You can also reply to a notice if youwish: a reply differs from a followup in that it is sent by normal e-mail to the original poster, and is thus private - replies are not posted on the noticeboard. Use a reply instead of followingup whenever you want to discuss something “offline” with the original poster. The followup editor window is exactly the same as the notice editor except that you cannotchange the subject field - Pegasus Mail automatically creates the subject field for you. Thereason you cannot alter the subject field is to allow threading - that is, when you choose tosort by Subject in the notice list, you will see all the notices in a particular thread sorted inchronological order. As with posting a notice, click Send or press to postyour followup. If you find you would like to delete a notice, ask the noticeboard administrator to delete it for you. Notices may, however, expire automatically after a certain number of days on the noticeboard. Mes- sage expiration is determined by the board’s administrator. A noticeboard’s address is expressed as the three characters NB: (N, B, and colon) followed immediately by the full name of the noticeboard. Attempting to send mail to a noticeboard in which you do not have posting rights will result in an error. 11: Preferences - customizing the way Pegasus Mail operates 107 General settings11: Preferences - customizing the wayPegasus Mail operatesMail systems seem to be a very personal thing to most users, so Pegasus Mail has been madeextremely configurable. You can alter many aspects of the way it operates using the Optionsdialog, which is found on the Tools menu. The Options dialog contains a number of sections, shown at the left-hand-side of the dialog: each of these sections has one or more settings pag-es, which allow you to control the behaviour of a specific part of the program. Clicking on apage brings the settings associated with that item into the Properties area on the right of thedialog, where you can inspect or change them. Some pages in the Options dialog, such as Editextended features will only be available if the system administrator has granted you the nec-essary rights. Others, such as NetWare MHS Settings, may not be present in the list if the fea-ture to which they correspond is unavailable or not installed on your system.Pegasus Mail remembers your preference settings from session to session, and you can ac-cess the Options dialog at any time by pressing.General settingsThis section contains pages that allow you to configure aspects of the way Pegasus Mail be-haves in an overall sense.Basic SettingsPersonal name Any string you enter in this field will be attached to your address in messagesyou send. Most mail programs will show the name you enter here instead of your addresswhen displaying mail, which can make it easier to find and recognise your messages. If you normally runPegasus Mail in Folder Preview Mode (see chapter 5), then checking this control will openyour folder list at program startup, automatically selecting the new mail folder in the list.Preserve deleted messages until Pegasus Mail closes If checked, then Pegasus Mail will notphysically delete messages when you click the Delete button in the browser, but will movethem to a special folder called “Deleted messages” instead. You can browse this folder likeany other, but each time you exit from Pegasus Mail it will be emptied. Checking this controlmay consume disk space temporarily, but gives you an extra level of safety in case you deletesomething you later decide you need. Be careful, however, when using this setting ina low-disk environment. If you would prefer notto be prompted this way, uncheck the control. If you do not have deletion prompting turnedon, we recommend you turn on Preserve deleted messages until Pegasus Mail closes as asafeguard. 108 11: Preferences - customizing the way Pegasus Mail operates General settings Allow read messages to stay in the new mail folder If this is checked, then Pegasus Mail will leave mail which you have read but not moved or deleted in your new mail folder. Normally, Pegasus Mail automatically moves new mail which you have read into your Default folder (see below) when you close the new mail folder. Ask for NetWare password at startup If you check this item, then Pegasus Mail will require that you enter your NetWare password when it starts up. This adds security to your mailbox. Save the Pegasus Mail desktop state between sessions If you check this control, Pegasus Mail will attempt to remember the folders, address books, distribution lists and addressing utilities which are open at the end of one session, and will reopen them at the start of the next. Check- ing this control also results in the folder manager window remembering which trays are open between sessions. Use system-defined colours in Pegasus Mail’s controls If this is checked, Pegasus Mail will respect any settings you have made in the Windows Colours and Desktop control panels when drawing its lists. If unchecked, lists will appear with a white background. Name for default mail folder Enter in this field the name of the folder where Pegasus Mail should place messages that have been read but left in the new mail folder when it is closed. If this folder does not exist, Pegasus Mail will create it as required, the same way as it does for copy-to-self folders. If you want mail you have read but not filed to be left in the new mail folder instead of being moved automatically, check the control labelled Allow read messages to stay in the new mail folder (see above). Advanced Settings This page lets you change some of the more esoteric and less often-used features of Pegasus Mail. In general terms, you should not alter anything in this screen unless you’re quite clear about what you’re doing. Refresh the new mail folder view every. When the new mail folder is open and frontmost, Pegasus Mail periodically scans it for new messages, which can create increased Network traffic and can slow down your system if done too frequently. Enter in this field the number of seconds which should elapse between rescans of the new mail folder. The default value, 3 seconds, is reasonable in most cases, but if you are accessing your server across a slow link, you may want to extend it. Setting the field to -1 will disable new mail rescans altogether. Lines to scan for enclosures Internet mail programs handle attachments in different ways: one of these ways is to tack a specially-encoded version of the attachment onto the end of the mail message. Attachments sent this way are called enclosures, and can be time-consuming to find, since the only way to be sure of detecting them is to read the message from one end to the other looking for tell-tale signs of the encoded data. In order to minimize the effect that an enclosure search has on the length of time it takes to open the new mail folder, Pegasus Mail’s message parser only examines the first x lines of each message looking for enclosures, where x is the value you enter here. Setting a larger value here will increase the likelihood of the message parser finding enclosures, but will also increase the time required to do so. Note that the only effect this has is whether or not the attachment indicator will appear next to the window in the folder browser. When you open a message and click the Attachment button, Pegasus Mail always examines the message from start to end and the setting you enter here has no effect on that. 11: Preferences - customizing the way Pegasus Mail operates 109 General settingsOrganization string This field only applies to mail sent using Internet mail transports otherthan Mercury and compatible gateways. It allows you to set an “organization” field in yourmessages indicating who you are.SMTP time zone This field only applies to mail sent using Internet mail transports other thanthe Charon and Mercury gateways.
