lego 8860 manualPlayed for hours and hours. Lego is not made like this anymore. It is such an amazing kit. When I found out recently that my mother gave it away to some slightly less fortunate friends with young children of a similar age, I was quite upset, but thought it was for the best. It gave me the basic knowledge about how a car works. I used it to construct a three wheeler with gearbox and rear suspension. I had my nose to the shop's windows for a year, and then my parents bought the set for me for Christmas in 1981. I was 11 years old. Every boy on my street came to see the car. Many many hours spent playing with this set and building my own designs too. It took several attempts over a couple of weeks to complete this set correctly when I first got it. Justin: I can't understand how someone could have thrown this set out. My Lego is one of the few toys I preserved from my childhood. To have it thrown out like that would be very annoying. I look forward to introducing my sons to 8860 and other Technical sets, however the oldest is only 4 now so I am going to have to be a bit patient. A few years ago I rebuilt the auto chassis while visiting home. The car still proudly sits on my office desk at age 39. I built this when I was 7. It has working gears and a differential. Dad was a mechanic and I had an interest in cars. Think I nearly cried when I opened my gift. Here I am over 30 years later and building it with my grandkids. Still in awe as to how advanced it was for its day. I enjoyed every hour building it like I did years ago. Think the younger ones got a little bored and wanted to play computer games but that's the generation they are today.!!I agree gave a good basic understanding of how a car works. It is what fueled my interest in re-building classic cars. I remember the morning I opened this set and being absolutely beside myself with excitement. I am now 38 and building this with my 5 year old son. It is great to be able to share a part of my childhood with him.

In fact sharing my lego with him is just magical. So glad I kept it all. Both me and my brother got one for Christmas the year it came out in Sweden. I still remember opening the box and an hour or so later we had two cars of the same playing with them. Just Awesome!Lego lost the real heart when everything got customized to look to perfect. You can only use the piece to one thing. Few bits I need to track down but my 7 year old is fascinated. Can't wait to get it sorted and get building - again!:) I would go 8 out of 5 if I could. They should have built on it more. It was well used and argued over and was the starting point of countless adventures. I believe my mother still has the collection and is saving it for the grandchildren. I can remember the 8860 when it came out but the cost was out of reach and have dreamed of it ever since. I have been able to introduce lego to my kids but, the digital IT world has them under its spell although I have noticed that as they mature it is loosing its lustre, and lego is now once again catching their eye. I will be at 49 seeking to build my own 8860 from scratch if need be (nothing like a challenge) for the grandkids, so happy I found this site. The fire of imagination still burns. The Lego legacy. Sure am glad to have found the instruction book here on this site.My folks bought it during a trip overseas after much begging and pleading. I must have built the chassis car several times over the years and used the pieces together with other sets to build various devices. It taught me the basic workings of a differential and gearbox. My kids are almost ready for technic Lego and I have pulled it down from the cupboards to share with them (under my supervision of course to preserve the pieces). Very glad I kept my Lego's - I'm enjoying it more than them. Never too old for it. Instead, I had the advertising slip from another kit shown in image 6 above and using the parts from the various other kits built this as close as I could without a manual. This is how much I got the bug for this kit. Waiting for the wife to have her next day out so I can get started, how sad!!? LOL This kit is responsible for pushing many a child to an engineering degree and work in the automotive industry. A classic, well done Lego. With a little bit of tinkering I made it front wheel drive and added a reverse gear. The original is sat on a shelf behind me as I type this, along with a forklift, motorbike and sidecar, go-cart and the car chassis before this one. I am going to pick it up today, and see if I can make it complete again. They gave it to me for my 9th birthday. My friend from the neighbourhood had one, and I was so happy to get my own. Now, 30 years later, I am going to see if I can make it complete with spare parts, based on the parts list shown above.Unfortunately the steering wheel is missing, but that doesn't make the joy any less! And I could remember how I traveled back home by train this Lego in carrier bag. Every five years, I have taken it from the warehouse and put together again. So far i have played with it 30 years.Lego is many happy years of memories for generations. Plus what a true delight that it's still support, for spares and build manual, even though I still had it all in the original box. Imagine his surprise when I told him I used to have it and the one before. Well I dug up my old Lego found the instructions and 95 of the parts so with a little help from the internet it is once again complete, what a nice piece of engineering it was back in the day. I turn 47 this year and work as a Diagnostic Technician for a Mercedes main dealer. These construction sets are the main reason of who I am today. I felt like the luckiest girl alive and was very grateful as I knew that it must have cost them so much money.http://eco-region31.ru/dell-1100-inspiron-manual 30 odd years later I have just retrieved this set along with a few other sets from my childhood, from my mothers house. It's still in very good condition. I'm about to rebuild it just to make sure all the parts are intact and then I will probably sell it as sadly I don't have any kids or grandkids to pass it onto. During my childhood I must have built it plus the dragster many times over and enjoyed every minute of this gorgeous set. I loved putting my dolls and Care Bears in it and taking them for a drive. Lego was much more imaginative back then than it is now. Modern Lego sets look a bit too easy and rubbish in comparison to this build. It sits today, in 2017, on my desk at home. It reminds me of a wonderful Christmas and all the Lego kits that Santa brought me while I was a child. I found toysperiod.com while searching for a part list for my 8860 set just so I can check if it is complete or not, of which I intend to do later. I spent many months assembling, disassembling, and re-assembling etcetera, the car, and just before I moved on to other toys years later, could assemble the car at quite a rapid pace. If memory recalls correctly, I could have the car fully assembled from by the time I got home from school until regular bedtime. It was the first chance I got to really study the workings of a differential. And it was one of the most expensive toys my parents ever got for me. I was very excited to say the least. I enjoyed getting the Lego set more than I did my first computer. No doubt in my mind that it directly influenced my Engineering career path. This is a special set. Can't wait to start building this. It was amazing. My parents bought it for me as a Christmas present, even though they didn't have much money back then. My brother got the Star Wars Lego and we would build cars from scratch and smash them into each other. Thirty years later, I had to throw away my set when I was forced to move out of my home (through no fault of my own). Now settled somewhere else, I have just replaced the set. Can't wait for it to arrive! He has endless fun and even bought motors and control units. It has been stored constructed until last week when I dug it out in response to my son buying his five year old a simpler kit. I had forgot how much construction there is in this model. The model had broken up into 3 major pieces and it is pretty mind bending trying to reassemble a broken model from that point. Sorted though. It is a cracking kit and too complicated for my grandson at the moment. The kit will stay built along with the 8860 model so he can marvel at his grandads reconstruction prowess. Well my sons anyhow. I still have the box, manual and half of the pieces, but unfortunately I think parts of the set was lost when my parents moved. I have now started to hunt for the missing pieces, on auction sites and form Lego vendors. I hope to be able to build this again one day. It had so much detail, it really inspired my life long passion with engineering. Looking back, I'm not exaggerating when I say I think receiving and building this set was a defining moment in my childhood development. Looking at modern lego instructions, they are far more 'painting-by-numbers' than - like this one - 'spot-the-difference', and all the less challenging for it. I have encouraged my children to learn the pleasures to be had from lego, in particular working out complex build problems using logic and persistence. Its a real shame IMO that lego moved away from the studded technic blocks causing much incompatibility between technic and non-technic sets. Unfortunately, a recent loft clear-out at my parent house revealed my old LEGO sets - including this one - were probably given away at some point by my late father. Only one thing for it. I was 8 years old and spent all the money I saved for one year. I played a lot with it and then I stored it. Now, about 36 years later I found it, cleaned it and built it with the same fun as 3 decades before. I think he would love it very much, but I can't get it in Hong Kong, maybe I need to get it somewhere else. Your Review Own this LEGO set. Tell everyone what you like about it - add a review. Set is complete with original box and description. The set was released in 1980. Box is in reasonable condition. Photos are part of the description. Launched in 1977 the Technic range took LEGO into a new world of technical detail, providing advanced construction for older children and adults alike, and bringing with it probably the largest range of new parts in the brand’s history. The single most viewed page here at TLCB, 853 introduced rack and pinion steering, a working piston engine and an operable transmission to LEGO fans. Its success allowed LEGO to develop the theme and three years later the second generation car chassis was released, this time with LEGO’s first attempt at working suspension, 8860. The design uses straight-forward pieces too, so many builders may be able to build it from parts found within their existing collection. And for good reason. 8860 is the genesis of Technic Supercars and took the whole concept of large LEGO sets in an entirely new (and brilliant) direction, without which we probably wouldn’t have 2016’s Technic Porsche 911 GT3. OK, perhaps that’s not a great example, but we’d certainly miss 8880, 8448 and many of the sets that followed. Paul Boratko (aka Crowkillers) hasn’t helped productivity here today then with his wonderful modern interpretation of LEGO’s 1980 icon. Working steering, all-wheel suspension, adjustable seats, and a functioning gearbox hooked up to a flat-6 engine all feature, alongside modern tyres and LEGO’s latest parts designs. You can also read our interview with Paul in Master MOCers Series 1 here, and you can check out our review of the original 8860 Technic set from 1980 via the Set Review Library. The year is 1980, and the sophistication of suspension arrives at Lego Towers. Not very brilliant suspension, but we’ll come to that. Again, the engine is the only fiddly part, but if you set this up right it will run smoothly in all three gears (very fast in the lowest gear, which was intended purely for use with the motor and gets blanked off in the instructions. Leave it open and savour the noise!). The colours look right, there’s enough technical stuff going on and it’s playable. It seems like Lego’s designers made a concerted effort to include all the features they could manage with the pieces then available. Still, it was a start and better than nothing. Get one and you’ll see why it was good enough to sit at the top of the Technic tree for eight years. The engine was the first Technic engine to be rear mounted. It has two models, this and a dragster. This was the first Technic set to include a Differential, so the rear tires doesn't skid when turning. Also, it was the first to include Shock Absorbers This is a function which has been abandoned by the Technic designers, allowing them to focus more on mechanical functions. Then the two parts are put together like this: This technique is widely used in the studless era. The yellow bricks in the back is the support for the engine. The 14T spur gear meshes with the rear differential. The three 8T gears will align with the gearbox made next. If you remove one of the three bushes, you will be able to shift to third gear. This is used with motorizing the car, but I wanted to keep it anyways. For more details about this engine, see my other 858 Auto Engines review. The steering is mostly finished by adding these plates and bricks. The spark plugs are also placed on top of the engine. The car chassis is nearly complete. Now it's time to place them, along with the wheels to finish the model. This would be fixed in the next model: This is step 3, and you can see the steering axle in the front. The support for the steering column is already in place. No real drag racers has one, because it would have hindered the rear wheels from spinning. The final drive ratio is 2:1 for this model. The only difference from the main model's design is the cooling radiators for the distributor. The distributor itself cannot be seen. The specialized pieces introduced in 1994 would change this, allowing for a synchronized gearbox. The main pro with this set is that you could make any body for it at your heart's desire, unlike the Test Car. The B-model is also well done, but I would like it better if it had made better use of the pieces. More than 200 (30) parts are left after finishing the alternate build. A must-have for any Technic car collector! Another emotion. My first LEGO envelope. Loved it then, still love it now. Maybe not in black, but they're used. It reminds me that I still have to build mine which has been sitting in a box staring me in the face for the last while now It was dificult to get any LEGO in former Czechoslovakia before 1989, so to get hands on Technic it was like a miracle. Brings back very good memories. I remember the thrill when I got this set for my 8th birthday. Still a classic, best seats ever! But before I have built mine, I had to remove much of dust I bought this set when I was about 10 years old. (using the price-money from Lego competition I won ) It's not uncommon to have differences in the instructions vs the model, but this is something else. I'll spend the day rebuilding the main model. Something to try out for next week! No chance of that nowadays! No tangible evidence for this though. It's easy! Sign in here. I can’t think of the last time I encountered a newly designed set even close to this large which didn’t have that simple build aid that we now take for granted. (Last month I built the 826-piece Vestas Wind Turbine which lacked bag numbering, but since it is effectively a re-release of a 10-year-old set, I won’t count it.) While most of them make sense even if I do prefer printing, some seem unnecessary. In fact, one of the roof stickers is pure white, placed on a white piece. Its only function seems to be to hide a bit of texture on the panel and to make it match the other three roof panels. The instruction manual dives straight into the build with no special features, though there is a spread at the end of the booklet matching the Technic model against the real car (it’s a much closer match than the perspective on the curved page makes it appear). One of the more interesting is red towball pins. As that’s only the third color for the towball pins in 24 years and they don’t appear in any visible locations, so it’s a good bet the new color was introduced for another set and just happens to show up here first. The curved gear rack also makes an appearance in black, making this only the second set to feature this element in black, and only the fourth set overall to have the part in any color. Each of the four white panels is printed uniquely to match the car’s striping. With over 1,500 pieces and no bag numbering, the 503-step manual is beginning to look a bit daunting. For me, that meant dumping each bag into the compartments of three large IKEA sorting trays, with a little bit of extra sorting to filter some parts down to sensible categories. It’s a precursor of things to come: nicely designed, but without much innovation. Unlike every other Porsche 911 ever made, the RSR’s engine is mounted forward of the rear suspension, making the RSR the first ever mid-engined 911. Most of the larger panels apart from the wheel arches receive stickers. As such, it’s a Le Mans racer through and through, and what it lacks in luxury it makes up for in on-track capability. The top of the splitter is stickered with silver, while the top of the wing gets PORSCHE branding. Unlike the Chiron and 911 Gt3 RS, the roof is not a structural element of the car, and there’s no way to lift the car by grabbing the roof. The only way to lift the vehicle is by picking it up from underneath, a job that requires two hands. In the real car, even the seat is permanently affixed with no means of adjustment, instead allowing the pedals to move to accommodate different drivers. Likewise, there’s no adjustments here, and the seat is simply a rigid, no-frills approach with studless beams. Above that is a small radar screen that will notify the driver of approaching vehicles attempting to overtake from the behind, though the on-screen display in the LEGO model is a bit fanciful. There’s no instrumentation in the usual place behind the steering wheel. Overall, it’s not a bad facsimile of the real deal, though the steering wheel is in need of a better design in addition to being mounted a bit higher. The rest of the details are a severe letdown, however. Where the passenger seat would usually be, a variety of wires, fuses, and other gizmos are stickered on haphazardly placed tiles with exposed studs between them, giving it an unfinished look. The long red cylinder is likely meant to be a fire extinguisher, but it bears little resemblance. The front hood does not open. The bar down the center of the windshield is actually the single wiper blade, which rests in the vertical position. Its simple design feels monumentally underwhelming, and it’s hard to tell that’s what it’s meant to be at all. The rear wheels are geared into the pistons via the differential. Let’s take a look at them side by side, then. It’s immediately obvious that the RSR is a smaller scale than the GT3 RS, though both cars are stunning.
