Overview Members of the Church have been counseled for many years to be prepared for adversity. Preparation, both spiritual and temporal, can dispel fear (see Doctrine and Covenants 38:30 ). Elder L. Tom Perry taught, “The need for preparation is abundantly clear. The great blessing of being prepared gives us freedom from fear” (“ If Ye Are Prepared Ye Shall Not Fear,” Ensign, Nov. 1995, 36). With the guidance of Church leaders, individuals and families should prepare to be self-reliant in times of personal and widespread tragedy. The Principle of Preparation As members of the Church, we know that it is our responsibility to provide for ourselves and our families both in good times and in bad. Part of fulfilling that obligation is making preparations now to face whatever challenges may come our way. President Spencer W. Kimball taught that we must be “anxiously engaged in a positive program of preparation.” It is not enough to hope for the best; we must prepare for it. He explained, “The Lord will not translate one’s good hopes and desires and intentions into works. How does the Church prepare for emergencies. The Church prepares for emergencies by establishing and maintaining an emergency response plan in each ward and stake. Ward and Stake Emergency Plans Wards and stakes should prepare for natural and man-made disasters that are likely to occur in their respective areas by creating an emergency plan. These plans are prepared under the direction of the bishop or stake president. They should be updated periodically. Each plan should: Identify likely disasters. Gather critical information. Outline assignments and procedures. Identify emergency communication methods. Encourage member preparation. Use the Stake and Ward Emergency Planning Guide worksheets at preparedness.ChurchofJesusChrist.org in your planning efforts. How can I prepare for an emergency. Avoid Debt and Live within Your Means It is needful that we discipline ourselves by avoiding debt and living within our means. Doing so will put us in a better position to help ourselves and help others during times of personal or widespread crisis. Debt should be avoided, “with the exception of buying a modest home or paying for education or other vital needs” ( All Is Safely Gathered In: Family Finances ). However, debt of any kind should be approached carefully. Elder L. Tom Perry said, “Necessary debt should be incurred only after careful, thoughtful prayer and after obtaining the best possible advice” (“ If Ye Are Prepared Ye Shall Not Fear ”). But it isn’t enough to simply avoid financial tragedy; we should take care to spend less than we earn. “We urge you to be modest in your expenditures; discipline yourselves in your purchases to avoid debt” ( All Is Safely Gathered In: Family Finances ). Elder N. Eldon Tanner described what happens when we allow ourselves to spend more than we earn: “I have discovered that there is no way that you can ever earn more than you can spend. I am convinced that it is not the amount of money an individual earns that brings peace of mind as much as it is having control of his money. Money can be an obedient servant but a harsh taskmaster. Those who structure their standard of living to allow a little surplus, control their circumstances. Those who spend a little more than they earn are controlled by their circumstances” (“ Constancy Amid Change,” Ensign, Nov. 1979, 81). Living within our means allows us to maintain control of our circumstances. Falling into debt only leads to further hardship. Gain an Adequate Education In an ever-changing world, we must prepare for uncertainties. One way that we can do this is by first gaining an adequate education and then continuing to increase our knowledge and skill base as time and circumstance permit. We have been counseled by the Lord to seek learning in a variety of topics by study and also by faith (see Doctrine and Covenants 88:118 ). This training will prepare us to take care of our families and serve others. “In our educational choices we should prepare to support ourselves and those who may become dependent upon us,” taught President Dallin H. Oaks. “It is necessary that we have marketable skills. Education is mandatory to personal security and well-being” (“ Learning and Latter-day Saints,” Ensign, Apr. 2009). However, our commitment to education cannot end once we’ve received a certificate or gotten a job. Elder L. Tom Perry stressed the importance of ongoing education, especially in regards to our vocations. He stated, “We can become antiquated in our professions if we do not stay up-to-date” (“ If Ye Are Prepared Ye Shall Not Fear ”). It is vital that we stay abreast of current industry practices and continue building our skill set. Doing so will give us the best chance at gainful employment. Keep a Reserve of Food and Other Supplies Another way we can prepare for an emergency is by building up a store of needed supplies to help carry us through a crisis. President Gordon B. Hinckley said, “We have built grain storage and storehouses and stocked them with the necessities of life in the event of a disaster.” But those goods cannot help us if we cannot reach them. He continued, “The best storehouse is the family storeroom” (“ If Ye Are Prepared Ye Shall Not Fear,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2005, 62). It’s the most accessible reserve in times of need and the best suited to our individual needs. As you build and maintain your emergency supply, include the following items: Clothing and bedding Drinking water Financial reserves Important documents Longer-term supply of basic food items Medication and first aid supplies Three-month supply of food that is part of your normal diet Ways to communicate with family following a disaster Obtain First Aid Training Another way to prepare for an emergency is to receive first aid, CPR, and AED training through a certified program. Then there are times when you are so surprised that you gasp with joy. This was the case when I got the LDS Preparedness Manual and read it (Did we mention it is FREE). There are so many other sites that focus on those subjects that we decided to keep our site focused on Survival and Emergency Preparedness. We are not for or against any political party nor are we for or against any religion and for that reason we choose not to write on those topics. Yes, you heard it here first, the LDS Preparedness Manual is FREE. Brought to you by the your friendly Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints ( Mormons ).Myself, I am not Mormon. I grew up Catholic but I grew up in Southeast Iowa and I had a lot of friends who were LDS. My family often went across the Mississippi River to Nauvoo, Illinois, which is a sacred place for the Mormon religion, where we saw some of their preparedness first hand when we visited the local stores that sold preparedness type products. I have a lot of respect for their knowledge and dedication to being self reliant. I would almost guarantee that if a natural disaster hit Salt Lake City like Katrina hit New Orleans, the US Government would not even bother to send in FEMA.This is not a Wilderness Survival Guide and I would never keep this in my Bug Out Bag (way too big), this is more of a preparedness bible of sorts and it is geared more towards “Bugging In” and being ready for anything. However, there is a small section on setting up a bug out bag which they called the “Deluxe 96 Hour Kit”. They give you two pages of ideas for your kit and they cover about everything you would need to survive for 96 hours or longer. The rest of this manual provides an excellent overview on food storage, emergency cooking, basic food lists, money, clothing, emergency shelter, water purification, emergency toilets, terrorism, money, quarantining for epidemics, fuel storage, (NBC) Nuclear Biological Chemical attacks, and much much more. At 222 pages, this manual is information overload. That is why I printed it off, put it in a binder and just read small sections at a time.Did it bother me? No. It might bother some people but the bottom line is that this is free from LDS church members and beggars can’t be choosers. Joel is an avid outdoorsman and spends much of his free time in the mountains. Read his full interview here. Read more of Joel's articles. Looks awesome!!! This one will take me some time.I doubt you'd have messengers on bicycles and by foot checking everyone in a congregation quite as quickly. In Utah, a congregation might only consist of a few blocks. Please, refrain from making wise cracks. I would never make fun or put down your religion or lack of it. I am sure we are not ungrateful. Thank you. If I need to bug out quick and take a month or two of shelf stable foods with me until I get get to a growing season and plant some fruits and vegetables I am going to have a 2 or 3 month supply of vitamins to keep me generally healthy until my crops produce. I hadn't ever really thought about it until I read it here in one of your check lists a few months back. Good insight. Write more about this if possible Basically, you eat 12 a day that provide you with all the vitamins and minerals you need and 240 Calories. They supplement any food that you can find (ie ramen noodles), or can be eaten alone. You can read about them here: or buy them on ebay. Do your own research, though. When I found out they keep a year's supply of food on hand I began to wonder why. That level of preparation served them well so we started imitating it. I have downloaded the manual. Haven't read it yet but it should be good. Thank you for posting it. It's written by a person who happens to be a member of the church, but the second page clearly states that this is not a publication that's officially sanctioned by the church. Just to be clear. Did you buy and download?? I downloaded it and skimmed a few pages. It looks good, and one can't beat the price ?? On the pro side, if you have a year's supply of food tucked away then that will last you through an entire planting cycle, so that hopefully by the time the next harvest comes in things will be better. With less than a year's supply tucked away things could get dicey if you have to wait for an entire planting cycle for a decent resupply. Yes I'm Mormon. Unfortunately I don't have a year supply yet. Another gift. Of course they are not free. How many of us actually eat the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables every day. I drink a shake every day and depending on my intake a vary the mixture of the ingredients. This may be a good topic to go into more. I store about a months worth of food but the first two weeks is what we eat every day and the remaining is basic survival. So supplements are needed. There may be times where you'll only be getting your calories from one type of food and that can have serious repercussions. Beans, Nuts, and to some extent even grains provide protein as long as you balance the amino acid contents, and Meat of course. Dairy is trickier but powdered milk in cans depending on the brand can provide a lot your needs. I would save the vitamin pills for a time of desperation where you only had one food source. So make your list, check it twice and stock it wide and deep! When the earthquake hit Haiti the LDS church had emergency supplies and food in the air before any other agency in the world. They have the canneries and food production facilities all over the place. I grew up here and it has always been the case to have 1 years worth of supplies saved up, plus they have a rotation program in print that I am still trying to get a hold of. Probably liability issues got to be too much, like most things these days. ( We used to go do canning a couple of times a year, so miss it.) You can go to a storehouse and buy already canned items, though, at cheaper prices than food storage companies, since they are sold at cost. Nothing fancy, though. It's good to get a bit of that long-term stuff (and have the knowledge and experience and tools to use it, such as a grain grinder), as well as frozen and canned and dried items. I'm a gardener and seed saver; it's very easy to store a lot of seeds in freezer bags inside of jars in a spare refrigerator. Lots of info on the internet on this. From what I’ve read, the Mormons had a pretty organized system of re supply points for their settlers coming west in wagons. Apparently they have been doing this sort of thing for a loooooong time. Good for them ! That's why they had to be rescued. Resupply points are harder to maintain in the winter. Good work on the website and newsletters Joel. Thanks for what u do. I LOVE this site. There is much work to do to get our people ready. I feel great responsibility on my shoulders right now! Fantastic stuff! Avoid series that cross authors, unless the authors were or became aware of the series identification (eg., avoid lumping Jane Austen with her continuators). So, the Dummies guides are a series of works. But the Loeb Classical Library is a series of editions, not of works. But Cain rebelled from the gospel and came to love Satan more than Heavenly Father. They argued and then Cain rose up and killed Abel. Now, it is for a wise purpose that Heavenly Father allows the wicked to exercise their agency, and this will be the case for as long as Satan has any influence over the hearts of men. Abel, having died a righteous man, has become an angel of Heavenly Father who received his body from the dead. When Seth was 69 years old, he was ordained into the priesthood. He was a perfect man, and his appearance was just like that of Adam his father. Adam and Seth were the two most handsome men to ever live. Ensign Magazine of the LDS Church. January 1998. It was written in the pure and undefiled language of Adam. Ensign Magazine of the LDS Church. January 1998. And so both the gospel of Jesus and the works of darkness began to spread throughout the people. Satan and his angels laughed and rejoiced at the wickedness of Heavenly Father's children. These items were translated and produced by the Prophet Joseph Smith, and most were published in the Church periodicals of his day. Its purpose was to make more readily accessible some important articles that had had limited circulation in the time of Joseph Smith. As Church membership increased throughout Europe and America, there was a need to make these items available. The Pearl of Great Price received wide use and subsequently became a standard work of the Church by action of the First Presidency and the general conference in Salt Lake City on October 10, 1880. One of the remarkable aspects of the new manual is that it includes a discussion of several sensitive topics in church history. These topics include the following. In these accounts, Joseph Smith emphasized different aspects of his experience of the First Vision, but the accounts all agree in the essential truth that Joseph Smith did indeed have the heavens opened to him and see divine messengers, including God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Because the 1838 account was part of Joseph Smith’s official history and testimony to the world, it was included in the Pearl of Great Price as scripture. (p. 20) The manual gives a brief historical overview of the events leading up to the massacre and acknowledges the participation of “Latter-day Saint leaders and settlers” in the crime (p. 523). Besides citing an article on the Mountain Meadows Massacre published in the Ensign, the manual also reproduces this quote given by President Henry B. Eyring at the 150 year anniversary of the massacre. Indeed, it advocates peace and forgiveness. They were given to the Church and have been analyzed by scholars who date them between about 100 B.C. and A.D. 100. A common objection to the authenticity of the book of Abraham is that the manuscripts are not old enough to have been written by Abraham, who lived almost two thousand years before Christ. Joseph Smith never claimed that the papyri were autographic (written by Abraham himself), nor that they dated from the time of Abraham.Below are a few pertinent excerpts from the manual. The Prophet Joseph Smith and many other Church leaders found this commandment difficult, but they obeyed it. After receiving revelation, President Wilford Woodruff issued the Manifesto, which was accepted by the Church as authoritative and binding on October 6, 1890. This led to the end of the practice of plural marriage in the Church (see Official Declaration 1). (p. 204) Under this practice, one man is married to more than one living wife. The Prophet studied the scriptures, pondered what he learned, and eventually took his questions about plural marriage to Heavenly Father in prayer.... the Prophet Joseph Smith was reluctant to begin the practice of plural marriage. He stated that he did not begin the practice until he was warned that he would be destroyed if he did not obey.... Because of a lack of historical documentation, we do not know about Joseph Smith’s early attempts to comply with the commandment. However, by 1841 the Prophet had begun to obey the commandment and to teach it to some members of the Church, and over the next three years he married additional wives in accordance with the Lord’s commands.Because the practice was initially kept very quiet, rumors began to spread about Church leaders marrying additional wives. These rumors greatly distorted the truth, slandered the names of the Prophet and other Church leaders, and contributed to increased persecution against the Saints. (p. 479) Be cautious and wise with such information. Some authors who write about the Church and its history present information out of context or include partial truths that can be misleading. The intent of some of these writings is to destroy faith” (p. 479). I myself have raised a similar point in this post. The manual then concludes by recommending, “Reliable historical research concerning the practice of plural marriage can be found at josephsmithpapers.org and byustudies.byu.edu” (p. 480). He did not translate the Bible from one language to another; nor did he have an original biblical manuscript to work from. Instead, Joseph would read and study passages from the King James Version of the Bible and then make corrections and additions as inspired by the Holy Ghost. Thus, the translation was more of an inspired revision than a traditional translation. The Joseph Smith Translation is estimated to have affected at least 3,400 verses in the King James Version of the Bible. These differences include additions (to clarify meaning or context), deletions, rearranged verses, and complete restructurings of certain chapters. As part of this discussion, the manual reprints the introductory material to OD 2 printed in the 2013 edition of the scriptures. Throughout the history of the Church, people of every race and ethnicity in many countries have been baptized and have lived as faithful members of the Church. During Joseph Smith’s lifetime, a few black male members of the Church were ordained to the priesthood. Early in its history, Church leaders stopped conferring the priesthood on black males of African descent. Church records offer no clear insights into the origins of this practice. It is not referring to the actual age of the earth including the periods of creation” (p. 280). This will hopefully serve to “inoculate,” to use the popular metaphor, seminary students against the often highly debatable claims and negative information one can currently find on the Internet. While one might perhaps quibble over how certain issues are addressed in the new manual, that there is even a discussion at all in Church curriculum is, in my estimation, a step in the right direction.
