When pressed briefly, it prints a test page. When pressed for five seconds while plugging in the power cable, it returns the MPS to its factory default configuration. Refer to the numbers in the figure for help. Power will come on automatically. The 4 LEDs will show varying patterns corresponding to the test being run. This step could last approximately 15 seconds if no hosts answer the requests. The OK LED will blink approximately 3 times per second, and the NETWORK LED will blink occasionally as network requests are transmitted. If so, it will load the code and begin normal execution. If not, the MPS will have to download software. See Appendix D for more information. The LINK LED will be lit if there is a valid network connection. The ACT LED gives information about what the MPS is doing; for example, when code is being downloaded as the unit boots, the LED will blink green quickly. If you have connected a 100BASE-T cable (MPS100 only), The Link and 100MBit LEDs should both be solid green. If not, check your network connection. The default privileged password is system. The default login password is access. EZWebCon’s graphical user interface guides first time users through the initial configuration process and allows experienced users to update any configurable parameters. Lantronix provides JVM installers for Solaris and 32-bit Windows users, as well as source code and instructions for compiling it for other systems. All instructions for installing EZWebCon are provided in the README file. For assistance once EZWebCon is running, refer to the EZWebCon on-line help. See Appendix D for more information. To change this setting, use the Define Server Incoming command described in the Command Reference chapter of the If it is undesirable to disable incoming logins, the MPS can be configured to prompt for a password with the Define Server Incoming Password Enabled command. A service is a resource accessible to network hosts. A Lantronix service is also known as a remote printer name or remote queue name on many operating systems. If you change the server name, the service names will change as well. LAT is disabled by default on all services provided by the MPS because many network managers object to the frequent LAT service announcements. AppleTalk is disabled on parallel port services because AppleTalk requires Bitronics mode, which is disabled by default. Use one of the following methods to set the IP address: EZWebCon; a directed Ping packet; a BOOTP, DHCP, or RARP reply; or commands entered via the command line interface. The default value should be correct in most cases. This process typically requires superuser privileges. If the ARP table is empty, the command will return an error message. Type ARP -A at the DOS command prompt to verify that there is at least one entry in the ARP table. If no duplicate is found, the MPS will use the IP address and will respond to the ping packet. Once logged in, the administrator can enter the Change IPaddress command to make the address permanent. Refer to the host’s documentation for additional information. For information about configuring the DHCP, BOOTP, or RARP server, see your host documentation. The serial port settings are 9600 baud, 8 bits, 1 stop bit, no parity. In addition, there are a few important things to note about LPR printing: The MPS will print a banner page at the end of a job, and cannot support most of the LPR options. If it is necessary to have the banner page at the beginning of the printout, install and use the RTEL software. If banners are not needed, they can be disabled. If this functionality is necessary, use the named pipe interface program in the RTEL print queue configuration software. This section describes how to configure LPR print queues on generic UNIX hosts such as SUN hosts. The front panel of the LPS has a Test butt on, 2 LE D’s, a power connector, and a 10BAS E-T network connecto r for the LPS1-T or a 10BASE-2 BNC conn ector for the LPS1-2. The rear panel also has a Centronics conn ector. The LINK LED is solid green when there is a valid Ethern et network connection. The ACT (Activity) LED flashes green or red when the MPS is in use. TEST LINK 5VDC AC T 100 Centroni cs Conn ector “front ” “back” Refer to the n umbers in the figure for help. 1 Connect the MPS Centronics con nector directly to yo ur printer’s co nnector. 2 Connect an Et hernet cab le to your MPS’s RJ 45 or BNC connector. 3 Attach one end of the power cable to the MPS; plug the other end into an electrical outlet. Power will come on automatically. 4 Allow 45 seconds for the MP S to fully boot. ? It will run throug h a set of pow er-up diagnost ics for approx imately 12 seconds. The 4 LEDs will sho w varying pa tterns correspon ding to the tes t being run. ? It will try to obtain config uration info rmation via DHCP, BOOTP, and R ARP. This step could last approximately 15 seconds if no hosts answer the requests. P ARALLEL PRINTER Network Connection 2 3 1 The LINK LED will be lit if there is a valid network connection. Th e ACT LED gives infor mation about what the MPS is doing; for example, when code is bein g downloaded as th e unit boots, the LED will blink green qu ickly. I f you have connected a 100BASE -T cable (MPS100 only), The Link and 100MBit LEDs shou ld both be solid green. Note: If the Power LED does not light or th e Test pag e does not print, r efer to Appendix B. The default priv ileged pass word is system. ? Note: If you would like to change eith er the pr ivileged or login p assword, either use EZWebCon or refer to the Print Server Reference Manual located on the CD-ROM. 3.1 Configurati on Methods 3.1.1 EZWebCon The EZWebCon configuration software is the recommended way to config ure the MPS. EZWebCon’s graphical user interface guides first time users throug h the initial configuration pr ocess and allows experienced users to u pdate any configurable parameters. EZWebCon requires a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) on the c l ient. Lantronix provides JVM installers for Solaris and 32-bit Windows users, as well as source code and instructions for com piling it for other systems. The EZWebCon software is located on the d istribution CD-R OM. All instructions for installing EZWebCon are prov ided in the README file. For assistance once EZWebCon i s runni ng, refer to the EZ WebCon on -line hel p. Note: EZWebCon is also availab le from th e Lantronix websi te and FT P server. See App endix D for mo re informatio n. 3.1.2 Inc oming Log ins You can log in via EZ W ebCon to configu r e the MPS.To chang e this setting, use the Define Server Incoming command descri bed in the C ommand Reference chapter o f the Print Server Reference Ma nual located on the CD-ROM. Inco ming logi ns do not pr omp t for a logi n pas swo rd, so you may w ish to dis able t hem f or security reasons. If it is undes irable to dis able incoming logins, the MPS can be con figured to prompt for a pass word with the Defin e Server Incoming Password Enabled command. 3.2 Services With few exceptions, y ou must create a service befo re you can configure print queues on the MPS. A service is a resource acces sible to network hosts. A Lantro nix service is also known as a rem ote printer name or remote queue name on many operating systems. The following default services are av ail able once the MPS100, LPS1-T, or LPS1-2 has booted: The default s ervice names are based on the server nam e; therefor e the server nam e must be no more than 13 ch aracters. If you change the server name, the service names will ch ange as well. LAT is di sabled by def ault on all services prov ided by the MPS because many network managers o bject to the frequent LAT service ann ouncements. AppleTalk is disabled on parallel port services becau s e AppleTalk requires Bitronics mo de, which is disabled by default. If you n eed to modify a d efault service, see the Server Conf iguration chapter of the Print Server Reference Manual located on the CD -ROM.B For IP Ad dress, enter the desired IP addr es s to use for this MPS. C For Subnet Mas k, change th e values pr ovided o nly if you wi sh to use a m ask other than the defau lt. The default v alue should be corr ect in most cases. D For Loadhos t, enter the I P address of th e loadhost where you intend to store your operati ng code and SDK files (i f used). 3 Click OK. 4 Reboot the MPS. EZWeb Con will let you kn ow whether the confi guration was successful.Figure 4-1: ARP and Ping on UNIX In order f o r the ARP command to work o n Windows, the ARP table o n the PC mu st have at least one IP address defined other than its own. If the ARP table is empty, the com mand will return an error message. Type ARP -A at t he DOS com ma nd pro mpt to veri fy that there is at least one entry in th e AR P table. Figure 4- 2: ARP and Pin g on Windows Note: There should be repl ies from the IP address if th e ARP command worked. When the MPS receives the pin g packet, it will notice that its IP address is not set and will send out broadcasts to see if another node is using the specified addr ess. If no duplicate is found, the MPS will use the IP add ress and wi ll respond to the ping packet. The MPS will not save the learned IP address permanently; this procedu re is intended as a temporary measur e to enable EZWebCon to communicate with the MPS, or allow an ad- ministrator to Telnet into the MPS. On ce logged in, th e administrator can ente r the Change IPaddress command to make the ad dress permanent. Figure 4-3: Configuring Permanent I P Address Any host wishing to access the MPS will have to b e told the MPS’s IP ad dress.Figure 4- 4: Becomi ng the Privileged User 3 Enter the new IP address. Two parameters mu st b e configur ed for LPR printi ng: 1 The IP address or host name of th e MPS. 2 The remote output q u eue (the name of the service on th e MPS). In addition, there ar e a few important things to note about LPR printing. Windows f or Workgroup s, Windo ws 95, and Windo ws 98 d o not su pport LPR di- rectly; howe ver, Lantron ix has p rovided a peer-to-peer printin g solution on the dis- tributio n CD-ROM. ? Because of the way the LPR protocol is typically implemented on the host, the pro- cessing op tions and ban ner page are sent after the job d ata itself. The MPS will p rint a banner pag e at the end of a job, and cannot sup port most of th e LPR options. If it is necessary to have the b anner page at the beginning of the printout, in stall and use the RTEL software. If b anners are no t needed, they can b e disabled.Figure 4-8: C reating Spooling Di rectory 4 If desired, use the mx optio n to allow unlim ited si ze files to be printed and the sh option t o prevent header page s from being genera ted. See the host’ s documentation or man pages fo r more information on the format of the printcap file and how to cre- ate the spool di rectory. 5 Print to the queue us ing normal lpr comman ds: Figure 4-9: Printing t o Queue 4.2.4 LPR on AIX Ho sts The System Management Interface To ol (SMIT) allows you to enable LPD printing and create pri nt queues. L P R has onl y been tested on AIX version s 3.2 and higher. To create a print queue: 1 At the hos t prompt, type smit. 2 Choose Print Spooling. 3 Choose Manage Print Server and Start the Print Server Subsystem ( lpd dae- mon). 4 In the Start the Print Server Subsystem dialog b ox, type both in the first field. 5 The message “The lpd su bsystem has been started” will appear.The name of the MPS unit. The name of the MPS service. The type of print spooler on the remote ser ver, and. C lick Done. Note: If you are unable t o use SMIT, see the Print Server Reference Manual on the CD-RO M for UNIX comma nds used to s et up pr int queues. 8 Print to the queu e using normal l p syntax. Figure 4- 10: Pr inti ng t o Que ue 4.2.5 LPR on HP Hosts The System Adm inistration Manager (SAM) allows you to create print queues. Note: If you ar e unable to use SAM, the Prin t Server R eference Manua l lo- cated on the CD-ROM desc ribes UNIX comman ds that can be used to set up p rint queu es. Note: Printer names on HP hosts are limited to 1 3 character s. The MPS text service nam e will be too lo ng, so you wil l have to rena me the MPS. SAM will prompt you for. The printer n ame (the name of the print queu e). The remote system name (the MPS name),.This will ins tall the Berkeley remo te printing files and executab l e programs. Note: The mkdev rlp command should only be iss ued once, or seriou s prob- lems will occur. If this happens, contact SC O technical sup port. You can print to this queue using normal lp syntax once the remote printer is s et up. To create a remote printer: 1 Issue the rlpconf command. 2 Answer the questio ns that follow. Figure 4-11: Config uri ng Re mote P rint er In the example, the printer nam e is your MPS service name, and the remote ho st name is the name of your MPS as it is listed in your hosts file. Putting the printer in printer description file and creating spool direc- tory.After installing the software configuring the conn ections to the MPS, you can use normal UNIX print com mands and queue ut ilities such as lpc and lpsta t. Note: RTEL binar ies are provided for many systems. S ource code is also provided fo r use on non-supp orted systems. To print to the MP S using special form atting or usin g third-party s oftware packages, you may have to create prin t pipes on the host. The RTEL software provi des this functionality by providi ng a UNIX named-p i pe interfa ce.The fol- lowing s ections co ver print configu ration met hods for NetWare h o sts. Note: The MP S needs an I P address befo re you can u s e EZWebC on. See Setting th e IP Address on page 4-1 f or in structi ons. This chapter explains creating NDS print queues with NetWare Administrator and with the PCONSOLE Quick Set up option. To create NDS prin t queues, you must be running NetWare version 4.x with NDS capabi lities. If you are run n ing NetWare ver sions 2.x, 3.x, or v ersion 4.x with bindery emulation, you may configure b indery print qu eues using QINST (bindery only) or PCONSOLE. For more information, see the NetWare chapter o f the Prin t Server Reference Manu al located on the CD-ROM. 5.1 NDPS Printing Lantronix T erminal and Prin t Servers sup port Novel l’ s NDPS for pri nting u sing the No- vell NDPS Gatewa y. For instruction on settin g up NDPS, refer to your Novell do cumen- tation. Contact information is provided in Appendix A. Figure 5-3: Defining Directory Service Context 4 Enter the List Protocol NetWare Access command to ensur e that at least one of the file servers in the directory service tree is in the access list. 5 If desired file server is no t in the access list, add it. Figure 5-5: R eboo ting 5.3 NetWare Administrator Quick Setup Print Queues The NetWare Administrat or managem ent utilit y allows y ou to m anage n etwork resources, such as queue-based print services, in a tree structure. You can either use the Quick Setup option or individually create printing- related o bjects. Note: NetWare A dminis trato r can be used fo r both ND S and bi ndery print queues.The new print queu e name, and. The print queue volu me (the name of the file server from whi ch the printer re- ceives print requests). The remaining fields can be left in thei r default settin gs. 5 Press the F10 key to save the print queue in formation. 6 Reboot the M PS. The MPS Ne tW are ac cess tab le Use the Show Pr otocol s NetW are Ac cess com mand. Scannin g too many file servers can cause a delay betwee n jobs. Con figure the acce ss list to on ly scan for jo bs on th e f ile ser vers of in te res t. Table 5-2: NetWare Ho st Trouble shooting (NDS) Area to Check Explanation The MPS Ne tW are access tab le Use t he Show Pr otocol s NetW are A cces s command. By default, only local file servers are sc anned for queu es. The MPS login pa ssword and the queue password on the file server The passwords must match or the MPS will not be able to log into the file server s to scan for jobs. This will display informatio n about f ileservers, printers, a nd queues tha t the MPS has fou nd. If a queue is in Job Poll, the MPS ha s successf ully attach ed to the queu e. The DSTree, DSContext, and DSLicense Ty p e Show P rotocol NetW are NDS. Th is command shows the tree and the co ntext that yo u have c onfig ured, a failure code, and an NDS error code for each server. DSTree is the director y service tr ee on which the MPS i s located. Print er and qu eue chan ges hav e prop - agated th rough the NDS t ree It may take a few minutes for th e changes to propag ate. If the MPS doesn ’t attach, reboot the MPS. W ait a few minutes and issue the Set P rotocol Ne tW are Reset com - mand. 0xfff ffd63 Invalid password The password for the print server ob ject under PCONSOLE must match the MPS login pass word. If the login password on the MPS is left as the defaul t (access), there should be no password for the print server ob ject. 0xffff fd 54 Secure NCP viola tion T urn do wn the NCP pack et signa ture l evel so that it is no t required. If the MPS is using the de fault password (acces s), there should be no print server object pas sword. 8 Server c annot attach to queue Check the NDS p artitions, r eplicas, and volumes to e nsure the fil e server where t he queue lives ha s the correct informa tion. The fol- lowing s ections co ver print configu ration met hods for LAT host s. Note: The MP S needs an I P address befo re you can u s e EZWebC on. LAT print queues can be created by p rinting to a port o r printing to a service. Prin ting directly to a port requ ires no MPS configurat ion. Note: Printing d irectly to a port is the easiest method for print ing to the MPS. If you wou ld like instructio ns for printing to a service, see the Print Server Referen ce Manual located on the CD-ROM. 6.1 Prin ting Directly to a Port 1 Create a LAT application port that ref erences the MPS port. Figure 6-1: Creating LAT App lication Port 2 Create and start a print queue that uses th e LAT application port. Note: LAT terminal device characteristics may have to be changed to cor- rectly print certain files. See your VMS docu mentation for more in- forma tion. 4 Print to the queue.The spe cif ied port name m atche s the port’ s na me Use the List Port 1 command to verify. The fol- lowing s ections co ver print configu ration met hods for AppleTal k hosts. Note: Macintosh es that do no t suppor t EtherTalk will need either an Ethernet card or a LocalTalk-to-EtherTalk router to u se the MPS. Note: The LP S1-T a nd LPS 1-2 do no t support Ap pleTalk Protoco l. 7.1 Bitron ics Print ing from a Macintosh is only possible with a P ostScri pt pri nter and bi -directi onal communication between the MPS and that prin ter. The MPS supports the Bitronics in- terface, an extension to the standa rd Centronics interface. Pr inters that support Bitronics allow bi-direction al communicatio n. To enable Bitron ics on an MPS p ort, use the Define Por t 1 Bi troni cs En ab led command. Note: MacOS 8.1 can also print via LPD. See the Print Server Reference Manual located on th e CD-ROM and web s ite f or config uration instru ctions. 7.2 Macinto sh Serv ices Before attempting to print fr om a Macintosh, ensure that Ap pleTalk and PostScript are both enabled o n at least one service. Once a PostScript AppleTalk service is configu red, the service will appear in the Chooser as a LaserWriter in the same zone as the MPS. Se- lect the service in the Chooser and complete the appropriate setup options. Then close the Choos er window an d print a te st page of t ext to t he Macintosh service. 7.3 AppleTalk Zones If there is a router on the network, the MPS will appear in the default zon e specified by the router. To chan ge the default zone use the Define Protocol AppleTa lk Zone com- mand. If the MPS is attached to a network witho u t an AppleTalk r outer, all AppleTalk d evices (including the MPS) will appear in the default zone in the Choo ser. Bidir ectio nal commun icati on Lock th e prin ter in PostScr ipt mo de and issu e the T est Servi ce PostScript Count n command. This sends a job t o the printer and waits for th e response. Windows 9 5 does no t suppo rt DLC printing (s ee Chapter 4 for more information). 8.1 DLC Co nfiguration 8.1.1 MPS Configuration To use the DLC protocol, you m u st have one service with the DLC characteristic en- abled. The DLC characteristic may be associated w ith only one service on a given MPS. Figure 8-1: Enab ling DLC 8.1.2 Host Co nfiguration To send pr int jobs from a Windows NT host to t he MPS, add the MPS as a Windows NT printer. 1 Double-click the Printers icon in the Control Panel. 2 Double-click the Add Printer icon. 3 In the window that appears, select My Computer and click Next. 4 Select the Add Port bu tton. 5 Select Hewlett-Packard Network Port a nd click New Port.
