Search for Norfolk Wolf on Youtube where he tests a number of detectors, both for ability to detect coins in the ground and also to separate a cut hammered coin from a nail. I have essentially unlimited minutes available and dont want to cause costs to anyone. Unfortunately most gardens are littered with prime and other junk, so don't be too disappointed when you find your detector struggles in a garden. If any kind reader in this region would like a meet one day where ever so that they might cast their eye on this machine it would be good. Search for Dakota Wolf on Youtube where he tests a number of detectors, both for ability to detect coins in the ground and also to separate a cut hammered coin from a nail. The instructions are not flow chart type and assume some knowledge or it could take some time to social some degree of competence. Can travel and anytime any day due reetired. I have used coins and rings in test position. Maplin metal detector interesting point is the depth indication on the meter, its and arbitrary scale but amazingly good. If you are anything like him you will prime until you can upgrade,he adores his current cs3mx after the struggles he had. Setting the ground balance has maplin metal detector ERRRR dificult, its very very unstable and knowing what is acceptable requires experience. The all metal mode does get them ok but sounds differently as to be prime from my hazy 40 years ago experience I will get back to you on the buried tests if I may, and I 100 accept that these cheap machines can be less than poor. My experience with instructions is that quite often they are not proof read and have errors, it is with this in I mind I thought it better and easier to ask after some hours of testing. It's the same on more expensive detectors, so don't worry. Can I ask please for a little help, I am happy to travel a round trip of 100 miles of shifnal for a few precious minutes of a members time. I have a maplin professional detector L24BK. I know its not much of a model but if it works ok its good enough for me. I had a decent whites back in time 70's but operating this one in 2011 is proving slow going. If some kind person can assist in explaining how to get the best from it, or how it works. The instructions are not flow chart type and assume some knowledge or it could take some time to reach some degree of competence. My experience with instructions is that quite often they are not proof read and have errors, it is with this in I mind I thought it better and easier to ask after some hours of testing. I have used coins and rings in test position. Setting the ground balance has been ERRRR dificult, its very very unstable and knowing what is acceptable requires experience. Ok on the all metal mode but then some discrim is handy after using all metal. Would be delighted to meet someone or perhaps call my mobile and I will call back at once. I have essentially unlimited minutes available and dont want to cause costs to anyone. Ok on the 2p coins. Ok on the actual machine, very much noted. This one seems to be sensitive. The instructions regards setting ground balance so far seem wrong and having tried it simply using the analogue control and not pressing the trac button afterwards it seems to work, but experience is just about paramount and this I am missing so as a result of your advice I will do some actual buried tests. It was in the disc mode when different 2p coins responded differently, which I understand now thank you for that. The all metal mode does get them ok but sounds differently as to be expected from my hazy 40 years ago experience I will get back to you on the buried tests if I may,, and I 100 accept that these cheap machines can be less than poor. Thank you again for the reply it is appreciated. Best wishes, Jon Hi Jon, welcome back to detecting. I've had a long absense since detecting back in the 1970s with a C-Scope VLF machine and came back to the hobby when I took early retirement a few months ago. The Maplin unit looks good on paper, but I've not come across anyone using one. Reading the manual suggests to me it might take some getting used to. Many modern detectors use motion detect with multiple audio tones for diffent metals, just like this Maplin unit does. Most have a push button to change to non motion pin pointing for centring the coil over the target, the instructions suggest yours needs a slightly different approach which will work but maybe not quite as easily. One of the reviews on the Maplin site mentions picking up a 5p at 25 cms, which isn't bad. It's the same on more expensive detectors, so don't worry. Just be aware that you can miss some good items if you ignore pull tabs and foil. A couple of things to experiment with. There is no substitute for trying your detector for real out in the garden. Unfortunately most gardens are littered with iron and other junk, so don't be too disappointed when you find your detector struggles in a garden. See how the detector responds when you place a nail and a copper coin near each other. Usually swinging a detector coil over an iron nail will blank it for a fraction of a second which will completely miss the coin. A good detector will be able to locate a good target within a couple of inches of an iron nail. Search for Norfolk Wolf on Youtube where he tests a number of detectors, both for ability to detect coins in the ground and also to separate a cut hammered coin from a nail. Dave Hello Dave, Thank you for all the extra info. It is quite true that some of these machines, if not all, are hit and miss regards ability. In all metal mode I seem to be lucky here with regards sensitivity, the problem is turning it down and being stable at the same time,, asking I bit much I am for sure. In the all metal mode it detects things quite deep, certainly more than 6 inches and depending on its size 12 inches plus or minus. One interesting point is the depth indication on the meter, its and arbitrary scale but amazingly good. So apart from stability which always used to be a bit tricky in the past whoops 35 years ago its so far so good. Ok on the Utube chap, I will have a look there. If any kind reader in this region would like a meet one day where ever so that they might cast their eye on this machine it would be good. Can travel and anytime any day due reetired. Sorry to be slow with reply,, thank you again to all replies for different bits of info and all comments, it all helps me to make a new picture of metal detecting in 2011,, oh heck years fly by. Many thanks, Jon Hi jon I started detecting with one of these machines I left it in all metal as i was a beginner and enjoyed diggin up the signals, mainly horseshoes and scrap iron,oh and it seemed to have a love affair with ringpulls. I could never work out its discrimination and ground functions,my friend scotty had his trusty c-scope walking behind me laughing and finding everything i was missing. I never really discovered its true capabilities, but i upgraded at the earliest opportunity. If you are anything like him you will persevere until you can upgrade,he adores his current cs3mx after the struggles he had. My experience seems much the same as those mentioned. When many electronic circuits are assembled at the cheap end of the market sods law says that if all component tolerances can be out in one direction,, the worst direction for the purpose of the circuit,, than it will happen and all variations in-between, so,,, you can get good bad and ugly. The sensitivity of this machine is very decent but then I have no modern day experience to really say this, but from long past experience it is decent. However I am like the learner driver sitting in the car for the first time on a deserted airfield having stalled near every time. I have found that setting it up is just as described by your comments, quite a challenge if indeed it is possible to find a stable setting. So far its seems to drift but then the ground changes of course,,, so,,, much is down to experience with the machine and testing and more testing as your kind comments have suggested, I might win and then I might not. Thank you again for every bit of information you have offered about this machine it really has been excellent. You may have to register before you can post: click the register link above to proceed.
