kryptonite lock manualIf you have the Kryptonite brand U lock, you'll still need to take some precautions to make sure the lock is secured correctly, including choosing a good location and placing the lock in an ideal location on the bike. Lean the bike against the pole, with the chainring on the outside. Pull up on the quick-release lever touching the front wheel's axle. Flip it to the opposite side from where it started, then loosen the wheel from the frame. Set the front wheel leaning against the back wheel. Slide your lock key into the U lock. Turn the key, then hold the crossbar. Pull the U portion to the left and right and away from the crossbar until the portion is released. For a combination lock, turn the dials to line up the correct numbers at the center of the display. Pull the U portion to the left and right and away from the crossbar. Slide the U-shaped portion around the vertical portion of the frame just under the seat. Slide it around the pole, then around both tires. You may have to move the loose front tire around a bit to get the tire into a position where both fit into the lock. Slide the crossbar onto the angled post of the U-shaped portion. Allow that side to slide in horizontally and then fall in vertically the rest of the way. Listen for the lock to snap shut. Pull on the U-shaped portion to make sure it's tightly secured. Tips If you have a second cable lock, you won't have to remove the front wheel. Secure the U lock to the back wheel and to the vertical pole of the frame, then place one of the loops of your cable lock around one of the U lock's posts. Wrap the cable around the front tire, and then around the other post of the U lock. If you don't have a quick release lever, use a second cable lock to secure the front tire to the frame. We learned that almost every lock can be defeated in under a minute, but the Kryptonite New-U Evolution Mini-7 offers enough of a security advantage over other locks in its price range to keep a modest commuter bike from becoming an easy target for thieves. The Kryptonite New-U Evolution Mini-7 should withstand attacks from everything but power tools under most circumstances. Once our testing began, we immediately saw the huge advantage this lock had over the competition: Its 13-millimeter hardened shackle (the big U-shaped loop that gives U-locks their name) can withstand bolt cutters, eliminating a large percentage of potential thieves. At 7 inches long, it’s the perfect size for most people—long enough to lock the wheel and frame of most bicycles to a rack while leaving almost no room to wedge a pry bar or a car jack inside it. In addition, the shackle on the redesigned New-U now has an additional cutout at the end, which makes rotating (and therefore removing) it after cutting it even more difficult. The New-U Evolution uses a disc-detainer locking mechanism, which is much harder to pick than a wafer lock and should foil all but the most savvy criminal using specialty tools. I have owned many of the locks tested and have worked at shops selling all of them, occasionally having to cut them off. Between that and the work I did for this guide, I have spent hundreds of hours researching, selling, using, and testing bike locks. We also contacted John Edgar Park, an avid lock-picking enthusiast and instructor with over 20 years of experience, and we sat down together to review all the locks we had received to vet them for lock-picking vulnerabilities. We also made arrangements to get in touch with a lock-picking group, and we visited on a night with a presentation on high-security disc-detainer locks. The meeting was in an unmarked building in an unmarked room, and everyone who gave a presentation used their Def Con code names. In addition, we emailed Mark Podob of Metlab, a heat-treating and metallurgic-consulting company, to gain insight into how locks are constructed. We ended up choosing three Kryptonite locks, and we know how that can look, but we think the data will speak for itself. Given their supposedly different levels of security and proprietary ratings systems, however, it can be hard to decide which locks are comparable, other than blindly going by price or researching the ratings from independent organizations such as ART in the Netherlands and Sold Secure in England. Unfortunately these institutions use different rating scales, and not all lock manufacturers submit all of their locks to be tested. And although these independent labs return a rating, they do not make the reasoning behind the rating (or the tests they used to come to that conclusion) available to the public, so looking at their ratings still gave us only a rough idea of the security of any one lock. We decided our only way forward was to order the most expensive locks from every company we could and test them to destruction in order to set a baseline for what each company considered its highest level of security. We then ordered the budget locks from our previous guide, as well as some of the upgrades from companies that had finished well in our first round of tests, and destructively tested all of those, too. We eventually destroyed 27 locks from ABUS, Altor, Artago, Blackburn, Hiplok, Knog, Kryptonite, Litelok, OnGuard, RockyMounts, Schlage, and TiGr. But it was hard to make an apples-to-apples comparison, since all the rating systems are independent of one another. We scoured the Web for every lock review we could, but no single review had tested as many locks in as many ways as we hoped to do, so we knew it would be difficult to make any comparative judgments unless we tested the locks ourselves. So from our experiences working in shops over the years and interviewing thieves themselves, we created a list of the most common tools that bicycle thieves use to defeat bike locks. It became the checklist that our group of locks would need to survive in order to become a pick.
