This function is available only with coffee makers that come with a glass pot. Bottled water is also OK. Do not use refrigerated or warm water as this might impact the temperature of the beverage. Use always fresh water and replace the water if system has not been used for more than 2 days. For cold beverages, use water at ambient temperature, never refrigerated water, and place two or more ice cubes (20g per ice cube) in the cup. To be noticed that water hardness is the first reason of machine calcification and so it is recommended to descale the machine frequently (every 3months or less according to water hardness). Regular descaling helps protect your coffee maker and ensures it a longer life. It will also help maintain a quality of coffee that remains constant over time. Repeat the complete descaling operation, if necessary. The following are tell-tell signs of scaling: the coffee making cycle takes longer, the appliance produces lots of steam, makes much more noise at the end of the cycle or stops during the cycle, this means that scale has built up in your coffee maker.

You should descale your coffee maker between every 20 to 40 cycles or once a month depending on the hardness of the water. A plastic insulated carafe should be rinsed under hot water immediately after use. Never clean the carafe with a dishwashing brush or any other object as this may create hairline cracks that can cause the glass to implode. A brushed steel insulated carafe can easily be cleaned with a dishwashing brush or similar object, even inside. You should descale it. If it still does not work, do not try to dismantle or repair the appliance yourself, instead, take it to an approved repair centre To avoid any danger, have it replaced by an approved repair centre. Keep the container in the fridge to prolong freshness. The warranty excludes failures due to a lack of regular descaling. Leave it at a local civic waste collection point. What should I do? Decalcification is necessary only when “CALC” appears repeatedly or permanently in the display. Only kept the coffee hot for 2 hours and this one has the ability to set it for up to 5 hours. Since my office is in my home, I really wanted the 4- 5 hour option. My only comment is that this model used to have a stainless steel front area where you load the coffee so it was better looking. Still works great but is less attractive. Also ran vinegar through a cycle. It is losing the plastic taste, but I will update this review in a couple of weeks. Great coffee maker.Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2017 have had this model 5 yrs ago made great coffee too. Now the inside where the water goes smells like plastic no matter how many times I ran water through it. I thought the heating element like all new things smelled awhile but it is actually the water tank and it smells in the coffee too. Disappointed. By the way, it seems all the brands now you have to open the lid on the top to put in the coffee grinds and removed them and filling the water therefore has a narrow area to aim into. Bad design from all the companies. Currently I am perking my coffee on the stove in my old aluminum coffee pot. Yum! If you try that, can use aluminum or the old stainless pots work great. After 3x you will figure out how many scoops the way you like it and it's the way coffee should and use to taste like. The BRAUN auto maker which I also purchased does not smell like plastic so I will use that when I need a large amount of coffee. Please try again later. From the United StatesI decided I wanted to shop around and try to get a new machine in white to match all my other kitchen appliances. What I found was that all the machines currently on the market now (July, 2009) are pretty crappy as far as how thye are designed, and by the reviews the best you can hope for in some cases is somethign that looks nice but doesn't work all that well. This is true of virtually all machines anymore. They do not vulcanize the plastic before they put it all together. However, the higher end older model had the same problem when I first bought it 15 years ago, and this is nothing new.I tis worth the money. 2. After grinding the beans, or placing grounds into the filter, add a shake or two of cinnamon. It will take out the bitter edge of the coffee and help disguise any plastic taste until that is no longer a problem. 3. use filetered water, for better tasting cofee. Near where I live there is a store that sells water for fortyfive cents a gallon, where you just fill your own bottles. Anyway, their system purifies the water so that contaminants are only one tenth of water i can get anywhere else. Needless to say it tastes great and makes great coffee. Advantage of this particular machine The one advantage of this partivular machine is that since virtually every doffee maker overflows sometime over it's lifetime, this machine has the reservoir and the place where the grouns go completely separate, so that if an overflow happens you willnot be cleaning grounds out of the reservoir area. In short, i did not want to have to deal with a mess or the possibility of ground getting stuck in and clogging the water pump. This was the ONLY machine that was designed so thee was no way an overflow could put grounds into the reservior area, and was the ultimate reason i bought t, as they all seem to be rated with some problems of one kind or another. Please try again later. Please try again later. Destiny Thornton 1.0 out of 5 stars The pause and pour contraption broke after a month and keeps falling down. In order to put the carafe back on the warmer, I have to push it back up into the basket. I have to use a butter knife to do it so I don't burn my fingers from dripping coffee. The lid to the water resevoir warped from steam which makes even more steam escape and I don't get the same amount of coffee compaired to the amount of water I pour in. It glitches and won't brew coffee when it's supposed to from time to time (that's a TERRIBLE no no). It will just blink and do nothing else. The handle of the carafe came appart at the middle seam which in turn made the lid fall off and I had to glue it back together to make it stay. Oh, and of course, there's the ever so evil bubble that comes up in the sight tube that drives me batty. I use bottled water and think it's a waste of time and effort to have to pour it in the carafe first to measure the water instead of being able to pour it straight into the resevoir. I know it isn't THAT BIG of a deal, but it's still unnecessary when you should be able to rely on the site tube. Anyway, a lot of people seem to love it, but I am gladly in the process of trashing mine at this very moment.:)Please try again later. Please try again later. Welg 5.0 out of 5 stars For the price this was excellent lifespan considering it boils the water and then warms the carafe for hours after. This new unit has a black heater surface rather than grey and there's now a red max fill indicator in the reservoir Now I have spares parts, a new unit and I don't have to read instructions. Always fill with filtered water and replace the in-unit filter as instructed (yes, I double filter my water - almost zero scale build-up). Clean-out yearly. Always fill the reservoir using the carafe as a measure, that way you'll never overfill. Please try again later. Please try again later. D. Terry 4.0 out of 5 stars Don't put it on the same outlet as a toaster and microwave and try to run all 3 simultaneously. With all that wattage it brews fast and hot, though. When you crack open the lid of the decanter to pour out a cup, your thumb gets blasted with hot steam. A little ouchie. This machine seems to adhere to the old adage that you need 1 scoop of coffee per 6 ounce cup, plus 1 for the pot. When you fill the decanter with water and it looks like 10 cups, you get 9 cups of coffee. (The grounds absorb a cup's worth of water). Programming it is quirky. Coffee tastes good. That's my main concern. Please try again later. Please try again later. Brian J. 5.0 out of 5 stars I do not understand the complaints of this machine feeling cheap, it still feels solid and sturdy to me. The only negative I can think of after 5 months is the carafe, and I think it's worth taking away a star. The design truly is flawed, the steam coming out the back under the lid is more annoying than I thought it would be. I haven't been burned, but I can imagine some people would have less tolerance for the heat. It should be recalled and replaced by a new design, preferably with a removable lid. Overall though the machine still makes great, hot, coffee and I've never had a plastic smell or taste. It has performed perfectly and after a few power outages, I easily memorized how to program it. First impressions: I just bought this machine so here a few first impressions. Some of the reviews worried me enough that I bought it locally (for the same price as Amazon) just in case I have to return it, but I don't think I will have to do that. First the negatives, which mostly have to do with the carafe: 1. The carafe handle is not secured by a metal band like the old one, it is attached by some kind of adhesive. I'll have to wait and see how well this holds up. I'd prefer the carafe lid to be detachable, but it is not. I get around this by propping the lid open on the water filter attached to my faucet while it's filling but I can see how someone with a deeper sink would have a problem filling it. Related to this, some have complained about bubbles in the water level indicator tube. I haven't seen any bubbles, but it wouldn't matter to me because I've always used the carafe to measure the water. That's the only I way I know to consistently get the correct amount of water. 2. As some other reviewers have noted, while pouring, some steam does flow out of the back of the lid under the tab used to open the lid. I get around this by not holding the handle with my thumb next to the tab. I do not, however, need to partially open the lid with my thumb in order to keep it from dripping. I think some people have drips because they hold the carafe too low or directly against the mug. If I hold it a few inches above the mug and pour straight down, no problems. Every glass coffee pot I've ever used will drip if you aren't careful, and this one is no different. 3. The buttons located at the bottom of the machine may be a problem in the long run. I'll just try not to spill water and coffee all over them. It is taller and more conical (more like a beaker) than the old one, and without the metal band it feels slightly lighter, but the glass itself appears to be the same thickness. The box says that the carafe is dishwasher safe, but I wouldn't try it with the attached lid. The manual (you always read your manuals, RIGHT?) actually recommends you hand wash it, which is what I have always done anyway. On the old model, I could tell from across the room if the timer was set. But if you like to use the timer, just read the manual to know that it runs every day unless you turn it off, which is the opposite of how the old one works, which you have to turn on every day. But if you read the manual, and you are able to use any other electronic device, you can use this. The reservoir lid and the filter basket feel and function about the same. The only differences I see are a more rectangular shape and a matte black (instead of glossy) finish. Perhaps the plastic has a bit more flex than the older model but the thickness and strength seem comparable. I can't see anything breaking unless I abuse it, or it wears out after another 8 years like the old one. And they ALL leak. Every machine I've ever seen only has a simple little spring holding the coffee in the filter basket while you impatiently remove the carafe. Set aside the flavor consequences (which are dire, but I must admit I have done this). Find a microwave. Or get a machine without this safety feature and run the risk of burning down your house. Now the positives: 1. Great tasting coffee. I like a fairly strong brew and this machine delivers it. Krups seems to always make good coffee and I haven't noticed any plastic tastes or odors. 2. Good brewing temperature. This is probably one of the reasons the flavor is so good, along with the cascading brew head. I measured the temperature a few times in my cup and got a consistent 194-196 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature inside the machine may be slightly different, but that is good enough. I also see the Capresso models advertising 200 degrees for 2-5 times the price. All in all, I am rather pleased with this machine. If there are any reliability issues, I'll do an update. Please try again later. Please try again later. Bruno 1.0 out of 5 stars Replacement OK, but materials used are junk. Today is Thurs. Called 800 number with my file number. Very nice person told me that it will be FOUR TO SIX WEEKS before they can just TELL ME what they're going to do. Who knows how long it will take after that. When the Krups gets back, I may put it on Craig's List and keep the old Connaisseur maker. But not until they found it after first sending me somebody else's and I returned that one. Was just a fuse. Could have repaired myself in 30 minutes if it weren't for the special heads on the screws holding the case together. (I've got a lot of different types of driver bits and NONE of them would fit.) In the meantime, the carafe got broken. Looked around a tiny bit and determined that a Mr. Coffee 12 cup carafe would work (carafe needs to be tall enough to trigger valve at bottom of grounds basket holder). I originally bought the coffee maker because it was on sale AND there was a rebate. Over time it eroded and the metal underneath the coating began to rust - BADLY. I contacted Krups and they replaced the damaged element. 6 months later the coating is peeling off and I know that I'll be seeing rust again soon. I've owned kleenex tissues that were more durable than this piece of junk turned out to be.Please try again later. Please try again later. 1926 USAF 83-87 1.0 out of 5 stars I believe it has been discontinued but thought I would add comments for historical value. Yes, there are bubbles in the fill tube, much of the coffee spills on the counter, cabinet doors and floor and the water sensor fails all the time. You have to empty the unit, let it completely dry and then it works again for a year.maybe! When my sweet dear wife brought it home from B, B and Beyond, it looked so good in our kitchen. My mother-in-law was the first to use it and she spilled coffee all over the counter. We had words. Then, I thought I was getting senile as I too spilled coffee everywhere. Dang! Now, I had to make the apology call. Guys? Throw this coffee maker in the trash. Do not try to sell it. Do not try to repair it. Go on Amazon and purchase a coffee maker after researching for a new product. Please try again later. Please try again later. AZ Chris 3.0 out of 5 stars A low end Mr. Coffee was not the answer unless you like to wait 15 minutes for luke warm coffee. This Krups unit makes flavorful hot coffee quickly. I prefer its cone style filter and it's easy enough to program (and to turn off the shrill alarm). Yes the water level indicator can develop a bubble and make it hard to read, which is why I didn't give 5 stars. Krups customer service says to pour the water slowly into the reservoir on the left hand side to minimize this. I also used a quick shot of compressed air in the top (vent hole) of the indicator to clear out the remaining water. Yes that is a poor design but problem solved w the tips above. Beyond that, it would be nice if the lid was easier to remove from the carafe for cleaning. But these are minor points and if you are looking for a good hot pot of coffee brewed quickly, this is a fine unit for the price. UPDATE: Still like this coffee maker after one year. Krups replaced the carafe after the handle came apart at the seam. Also, when it's time for the 60-day 'decalcifying,' the controls lock from making ANY program changes until you complete the cleaning cycle. So if you want to change the auto brew time for example, you're out of luck. I don't like that as I can't always drop everything to run a cleaning cycle. Still and all it's a good unit for the price and I'm satisfied with the purchase. UPDATE 2: Found a left over of my old favorite Braun and went back to it about 6 months ago. The SECOND Krups carafe was about to come apart at the handle at this same time. So the Krups coffee maker itself is good but the carafes are not, and they are too expensive to replace. Hope my Braun lasts for a long while. Please try again later. Please try again later. C. Geary 1.0 out of 5 stars In fact, it sits lifeless in my home still. All it needs is a new thermal switch, but I can't find one anywhere. The 453 machine made perfect coffee. I expected the newer Krups models to make the same quality of coffee, but I was so wrong. DO NOT buy one of these. I have a different maker's pot on the way, and am sad I have to go thru the laborious task of finding a coffee maker that can do what seems like the impossible: heat the water correctly before dumping it on the grounds. Tomorrow when the new one arrives I'm gonna throw this sucker into the trash. So that's what I think about Krups FME2-14 coffee maker. Please try again later. Please try again later. My sister came for a visit. Luckily, she had only minor burns. I tried to contact the Krups customer service (through their website) and they never responded. And, it could end up causing an entire pot of extremely hot coffee to pour (or splash) onto someone. My sister's burns didn't require a hospital visit, thank goodness, but we were lucky. Krups apparently doesn't care much about customer satisfaction, I'm very disappointed about that. I hope they will at least look into the safety factor, but since they didn't respond to me at all, I just don't know about that either. If I had this Coffeemaker for a year, instead of 2 weeks, I would have expected more than this.
