Here’s a look at a variety of solutions for your troublesome faucet or valve. If you can’t find the valve that turns off the shower, turn off the water to the entire house (should be in basement or outside). Then turn on the shower and let the pipes drain out. When you turn the water back on, turn on all of your taps to force out any air that may have gotten in. When the water flow is steady, you’re done. Here’s how: You may have a sleeve over yours. Gently remove it, being careful not to mar the finish. Do not force it. This is also a good time to shine a flashlight into the valve and make sure there are no leaks. These faucet designs utilize complicated designs that aren’t as DIY-able as stems or cartridges. Replacing your tub’s spout is the easiest way to solve this problem. Here’s a how-to: The old pipe should come off as well. If not, use the wrench to remove it. Some spouts are held on with a set screw. Check for this before trying to turn the spout. Wrap both ends in plumber’s tape to ensure a good seal. Wrap cloth or something protective around the spout to avoid marring the finish. If it has a set-screw type, just slide it on and tighten. But a steady flow may indicate a leak. Replacing your faulty hardware is a common fix, but leaks can also be stopped by repairing your valve or stem. Here’s a quick rundown of simple repairs. Bad O-rings and faulty seats and seals are repairable issues. In most cases, replacing the damaged hardware is the best way to improve the issue, but gently soaking and scrubbing cartridges or stems can remove buildup and improve its sealing capabilities. All it was, was the silver thing that the valve sits in was loose and needed to be tightened. I have been dealing with trying to find the place my faucet turns off and whistling for 4 months ! There is no seat washer. Is this normal? It is now changing water temp by itself and the pressure has greatly decreased Did great until the pulling out of the cartridge was pretty stiff I used vice grips ever so easily and the front part of the cartridge did come off exposing the two tips with washers on it so I latched on to those and carefully tried moving that but the hard water has made that brittle and both snapped off.Suggestions please There is no seat washer. Old and vintage plumbing parts eventually fail from corrosion, decay, rust, and leaks, causing an owner stress and costing them a hefty sum of money. The costs themselves are about as expensive as if you were updating a newer home, but the sense of urgency to replace aging vintage plumbing is higher since more can go wrong, which can lead to more costly problems and headaches. The first thing to consider when deciding about home upgrades is to discover when your home plumbing system was last installed. Most antique plumbing systems (from the 1930s to 1980s) were built using galvanized steel pipes, which only have a 20 to 50-year life expectancy. This type of steel pipe was the industry standard due to its cheaper price point, not for its durability, so it’s no wonder why old plumbing parts tend to fail. Newer plumbing standards have brought brass and copper pipes to both new and old homes with the longevity (50 to 70-years) needed to keep your home plumbing up and running for decades to come. After your home plumbing system is redone, it’s time to replace all those vintage and antique plumbing parts, fixtures, tubs, faucets, toilets, and anything else in your bathroom that you see fit to replace. Update your kitchen as well with our huge selection of farmhouse sinks and bridge faucets. Scouring the internet for old bathtub faucet parts and vintage plumbing supplies can be time-consuming and stressful, so why not just replace all of your antique plumbing fixtures, faucets, and everything else with a quality brand like Randolph Morris. Most parts made in the USA. If you are having problems with a Kohler Forte in most cases following these easy steps and replacing a few inexpensive parts can restore the faucet to operating like new again. If the faucet is not shutting off and continues dripping or, running with a steady stream the problem is almost always a cartridge that requires replacement. If you turn on the faucet and water comes out at a reduced flow or, not at all in most cases you will find the aerator on the end of the spout has clogged with debris and the flow is blocked, you can unscrew it and either clean or, replace the aerator. On kitchen faucets with a side spray that are not flowing you should check the aerator first for debris and if that does not fix the problem, check the side spray to see if it has flow while the spout doesn’t, which will indicate a problem with the diverter sticking. The diverter sticking can also be indicated by water coming out of both the spout and side spray at the same time. In some cases there may be other blockages an the supply lines or, valves coming to the faucet but in most cases you should start at the faucet as it is the easiest place to start checking. Before rushing in blindly it is probably a good idea to get a look at the service parts diagram for your faucet to get a picture of how the parts go together. This will help you to get an idea of how to take it apart and put it together again, along with being able to see what parts you will need to purchase and in some cases where only one part is used you can purchase them in advance. Other cases where 2 different parts are used you will have to disassemble to find out what is used on your faucet the buy the parts. Turn off the water supply to the faucet, in most cases there are stop valves under the sink that should accomplish this. You should verify the water is off before proceeding with the cartridge replacement by turning the faucet on to both hot and cold to check. Remove the plastic plug button from the rear of the handle and loosen the allen set screw allowing the handle to pull off. Remove the bonnet cover then using an adjustable wrench remove the bonnet nut. Once the bonnet nut is removed you are then able to grip the cartridge and pull it up out of the valve body. If there is a problem with the diverter you will need to get deeper into disassembly with the diverter located under the spout. The K-10433 pull out style faucet does not have a diverter under the spout but does have other components such as a check valve, and screen where the hose connects to the pull out head which should be checked when there are flow problems. Once reassembled turn the water back on and check for proper operation and leaks. This will unscrew and the handle assembly will come off with it. Sometimes these can be difficult to remove especially if they have been wet and have gotten corroded, a strap wrench may help in unscrewing the bonnet. On the K-10445 faucet 2 different cartridges are used and you will only be able to tell which you have after the bonnet is removed. After the bonnet has been removed us an adjustable wrench to unscrew the hot and cold cartridges or, valves and grease the new ones with plumbers grease and reassemble. Make sure that the right cartridges are on the right side or the faucet handles will work backwards. Also apply plenty of grease to the bonnet before screwing it back in place to make removal later should another cartridge need changing easier. Turn the water supply back on test for function and leaks. However lavatory faucets do not have a diverter or movable spout. Once the handle is removed an adjustable wrench can be used to remove the hot and cold cartridges from the valve body. As always grease the cartridge with plumbers grease and the retaining ring for the handle to assure easy disassembly in the future.
