Also I will say that another neighbor has a Generac that already failed in the 1st few weeks of testing. They did exchange it, but no refund for install. Mine has run for about 24hrs (2yrs) and is doing well. It test itself weekly and it gives you error codes, as I mentioned, for anything that could be wrong with it. I bought the carburetor warmer but I have not installed it yet and I have been checking how low the temperature of the air will go before it fails to start. So far it exercised with 8F temps. CAUTION: This depends a lot on how dry the gas supply is in your area, so I will install the warmer eventually. I tested the power delivered an it is super clean. I also tested it with a 2.5ton AC, and a dryer running and it didn't flinch. No problem. Kohler is sweet quality. The unit looks like it is made of high quality materials. The Generacs that I have seen, look cheaply made. I am glad I paid a little more for a Kohler. I love this unit. I am going to eventually hook it up with a wireless router. It does have a space in the electronic panel to wire a DSL type connector, but Kohler wants too much money for their system. They have a free software that you can download and use with it, to monitor, control and program it from your PC. Everyone says that you may never use the generator, but the truth is that every time there is a storm on the way, your stress level is so much lower because you have a generator that is reliable, that to me qualifies as using it. So invest in it and you will see the difference, even if you never get hit by a black-out. I can't give it over three stars because of the very poor customer support from Kohler. Problem is the first two electricans gave up, Kohler would not answer their questions. Kohler would not give me any information on contractors that can install their units, come on how hard is it to have a list of contractors that can register on their site that can install their units. I was able to contact a maintenance service company listed on their site, but they don't install the generators, they just look at the hook up before startup. Unoffically during my 10 or so calls to various employees at the service company I was given acouple of electrical companies names that have installed Kohler generators. To save money I pulled all the necessary wires through the attic between the breaker box to transfer switch to generator. Apparently this setup is the new way of doing business which replaces a need for a sub electrical panel because it's all done in the transfer panel box. Make arrangements with your preferred propane company to handle all the setup. It takes several techs about a day and a half to finish all the work. That being said, I own this generator and we survived a major widespread power outage recently in total comfort. Heat, hot water, many lights, TVs, well pump, sump pump, sewage pump, etc. It powers on automatically in about 5 seconds after the power outage, and restores power to the items you select during installation via the included transfer switch. Generac makes a nice unit, and is probably a good purchase. The Kohler has a leg up in construction quality, though. Sturdier construction, hydraulic lifters which eliminate yearly (and costly) valve adjustments, and easier routine maintenance. Kohler's case has front and side panels which remove very easily when necessary for oil changes. Overall, the Kohler is simply a better unit. With the installed automatic transfer switch, the unit takes about 5 or 6 seconds to fire up during an unexpected power failure, which has happened several times each year in our semi-rural area. With a natural gas connection, the unit is always ready to go. Built-in exercise cycle starts it every two weeks at a predetermined time to ensure it will run when really needed. The exercise cycle can be scheduled according to my desire. If you want it to run weekly, or monthly, that's your decision. The software will issue a report in case any potential issues arise. With an associated OnCue wireless software connection, I can check, start, stop, and exercise the generator from anywhere via my cell phone. Had I to do over, I'd still purchase the Kohler, but I'd install it on a slightly raised base. The unit comes with a pre-fab base that's about 3 inches above ground level. The crankcase has a gravity drain, and a couple extra inches of ground clearance would make oil changes easier. It was not getting propane to the carburetor. I removed the line to the carb to smell any propane, none. There was propane to the solenoid valve but it did not pass through to the carb. The solenoid had 12 volts when the starter is cranking. I had more run time on the starter than the motor. This Kohler Generator is now working. It appeared that the problem was the pressure in the propane line was too high. The Kohler representative (who is 300 miles away) suggested to check the pressure in the propane line. The recommended pressure is 11 water column inches. I reduced the regulator three turns but have not checked thre pressure yet. Last week we had a scheduled power outage and the gneerator performed as required. So far so good. The hold down for anchoring is flimsy. We live in California earthquake county and I poured a concrete foundation with anchor bolts for the generator and used the shipping anchor holes in the plastic enclosure. I am using a Kohler automatic transfer switch. I found the wire through the internet, only needed 20 feet. The installation instructions for the generator and ATS were adequate. These instructions are necessary to wire them. I am using generator to power my private water well pump and provide power to special circuits in the house. I can't wait to have this 14kw air-cooled generator on the side of my home in case of a power outage. You never realize how important electricity is until you're without it. I'd been bouncing back and forth between manufacturers when I saw the free battery promotion that Kohler was offering on the air-cooled generators. I was already looking at the 14RESAL-200SELS generator package before so a free battery. AP electric made it an awesome experience. When we originally started looking at generators there was some other switch that wasn't any good for us. Then the 14RESAL-200SELS package was introduced and it was perfect. It's only a backup generator in the case of emergencies, but we also know better than to turn everything on during those times as well. This was 100 what we needed and the electrician had it fully installed the next day after it was delivered. Nothing to complain about with my Kohler 14kw air-cooled generator. I heard about a guy here on the east coast that had his whole gen flood after Sandy hit. Couple days later they were able to get it back up and running again. I couldn't imagine another manufacturer of air-cooled generators that would be able to make such a boast. Not sure what makes these residential generators stand out from the rest I just know it's what I like about them. This 14kw was able to start my 5-ton AC.They just work and they last forever.
