Fortunately, there are several ways to remedy a blinking light issue on the KitchenAid ice maker, once you know why the irritating lights are pulsing. Troubleshooting why the appliance lights are blinking can narrow down the problem and save time and money. Store all food in coolers while working on the appliance if the repair will take more than an hour. Have some bowls to hold screws and parts as you remove them for convenience. Gather towels and place them under the ice maker so you can quickly wipe up spills that can cause an accident. FilterIt gathers impurities and minerals as it makes its way to the ice maker. The water then runs through the lines and water filter before creating ice cubes in the machine. This slows down the production of ice. If the KitchenAid refrigerator ice maker is not filling with water, then it could be a problem with the water filter or lines. If the ice maker continues to not make ice or the lights continue to blink, then check that the water filter has been changed recently and is properly installed. First, make sure that the manual switch on the ice maker is in the on position. Tap the plastic tab on the door jamb. This signals the light to turn off. Press the door's switch three times and shut the door. Let it sit for a few seconds to reset the ice maker. This should stop the blinking lights. The lights may blink if the ice maker is jammed with ice. KitchenAid recommends removing ice that has collected on the ejector arm with a plastic utensil. SensorThis isn't always clear to detect. Remove any ice that has found its way over the sensor. In this case, swipe the filmy or crusty sensor with a soft towel dipped in warm, sudsy water. Remove soap residue with a clean, damp towel and buff dry. These can block the sensor or create a buildup of ice.http://gerryikputuandpartners.com/images/concrete-pipe-association-design-manual.pdf As a professional writer she has researched, interviewed sources and written about home improvement, interior design and related business trends. Some models also offer additional features, such as being able to choose between crushed and cubed ice. But on some occasions, you may encounter issues that prevent your icemaker from working properly. While some problems are easy to troubleshoot, others, such as the maker failing to produce ice completely or producing smaller cubes than usual, can indicate an issue that requires professional service. Being able to tell the difference means your refrigerator can be back to producing ice as quickly as possible. Not Producing Ice If your fridge’s ice maker isn’t producing ice, check that the shutoff arm or switch is in the On position. The water line shutoff valve to the refrigerator must be open, as well. If the ice maker has just been installed, the freezer temperature may not be cold enough to make ice. Allow 24 hours after the ice maker installation for ice production. It may take as many as three days for the ice container to fill even after the refrigerator starts producing ice. For a refrigerator that features a reverse osmosis water filtration system, make sure that your cold water supply has a water pressure at a minimum of 40 to 60 psi. If you’re unsure about your water pressure, contact a licensed plumber to examine your connection. Ice Cubes Are Small or Hollow When your refrigerator produces ice cubes that are small or hollow, it usually indicates that the water supply to the ice maker has low water pressure. Check that the water shutoff valve is fully open and examine the water supply lines to ensure that there aren’t any kinks or pinched areas that might restrict water flow. For a fridge with a water filter connected, remove the filter and see if water flow to the dispenser increases. If it does, the filter is either clogged or not installed properly. Replace a clogged filter or reinsert the filter properly to improve the quality of your ice. Remember that a reverse osmosis water filtration system connected to the cold water supply needs the proper water pressure too, so if it’s lower than 40 psi, it may product small or hollow cubes. Your ice may also taste, smell or look funny if the cubes have been stored for longer than a week or if the food in the refrigerator or freezer haven’t been wrapped correctly. If you live in an area where the water supply contains minerals like sulfur, you may need to install a filter to remove the minerals to improve the taste and smell of the ice. When your ice appears gray or dark in color, it usually indicates that your water filtration system needs further flushing. Flush it by using a sturdy container to hold the water dispenser lever for five seconds and then releasing it for five seconds. Repeat the procedure for two minutes so all of the air in the system is pushed out. Dispenser Not Operating Properly If your ice maker’s dispenser is not operating properly, make sure that the freezer door is firmly closed. Check the contents of the bin; ice will not dispense if it is frozen together inside the bin. The dispenser may also fail to operate if you place cubes that weren’t produced by the refrigerator’s ice maker in it. Finally, make sure that there isn’t any ice stuck in the dispenser’s delivery shoot. If so, use a plastic utensil to pry it loose. Try these simple troubleshooting techniques and fixes first to save yourself money and frustration. Ice makers fail. It's an unfortunate reality of owning a refrigerator with an ice maker. On the bright side, ice makers are also relatively simple machines that, for the most part, all operate the same way. And you may be able diagnose and repair a faulty ice maker yourself before forking over cash for an expensive service call. Here's how to fix some common ice maker problems. When ice is not ejecting If you find ice inside the ice mold, it means your ice maker is receiving water and the problem likely isn't with the water supply. Instead, it's most likely a mechanical or electrical problem. Cause: When moving things around in the freezer, it's not uncommon to accidentally nudge the control arm into the off position, which halts production of ice. Fix: This is an easy fix. Locate the metal control arm and move it to the down or on position. Cause: If the control arm is in the on (down) position and the mold is filled with ice, the problem likely lies with the motor, gearbox or electrical connection. Fix: Start by making sure all electrical connections are properly seated. Slide the refrigerator out from the wall, turn off the water supply valve and disconnect it from power. Locate the quick release plug on the back wall inside the freezer. Unplug the connection it and reconnect it to ensure it's fully connected. Manually remove any remaining ice from the mold by adding some water and letting it sit for a minute. The ice will begin to melt and should be easier to remove. Restore power to the refrigerator and lift the control arm to the off position. Lower the control arm back down and wait for approximately 10 seconds for the solenoid to engage and fill the mold with water. Wait three to four hours for the ice to freeze and see if the ice now ejects. If not, it's likely that you will need to replace the motor or gearbox. When it's not making ice at all If your ice maker isn't producing ice at all or is producing crescents or cubes that are smaller than usual, it's typically indicative of a clog somewhere along the supply line. Cause: A common cause for a clog is frozen water in the line. Fix: To repair a frozen line, slide the refrigerator and unplug it. Locate the shut-off valve, typically underneath the sink or behind the refrigerator. Turn the valve to the closed or off position. Fill a turkey baster with warm water and pour the water over the water line. Alternatively, you can defrost the water line with a hair dryer or by letting the refrigerator sit unplugged for upward of two hours. Restore power to the refrigerator and listen for the water supply to fill the ice mold. If the clog is anything but translucent, consult with a professional for help removing the clog. Cause: There is also a possibility that the water filter for the ice maker is clogged. Fix: Locate and replace the water filter. Filters for ice makers are typically located inside the refrigerator (to keep them from freezing). When cubes are too big or small Cause: If the ice crescents are too big or there is no clog and they're still too small, chances are, the ice maker just needs a little adjustment. Fix: To adjust how much water the ice mold is filled with each cycle, first remove the cover from the ice maker. It's the white plate on the frontmost part of the ice maker assembly and it should pull off rather easily. If you're having difficulty removing it, use a flat head screwdriver to gently pry it away from the housing. Under the cover, you should see a screw and spring assembly, along with a plus and minus indicator. This controls the dosing for water. Screw in (toward the minus symbol) to decrease the amount of water per dose and out (toward the plus) to increase the amount of water per dose.
