When you press and hold the E.CHG key (or within two seconds of pressing the E.CHG key), each control temporary control of the volume or tuning control passes to the VHF band. The squelch helps eliminate “white noise” or static until you receive active communications on a frequency. There are two squelch controls, one for the UHF band and one for the VHF band. The 1 kHz digit is not displayed if it is a zero. If you do not enter the 1 kHz digit, the indicator flashes and the transceiver defaults to the previous operating frequency. Rotate the tuning control clockwise or counterclockwise to select the desired operating frequency. 4 Step Size Selection The transceiver must be in the VFO mode to select frequency steps. If the desired frequency is already on the display, continue to step 2. Press the M key. The memory indicator will flash. Use the keypad to select any desired memory channel number (O-49). You can change the memory channel by the following two methods. It may be up to six characters long. Note When you select this function, the memory channel can be displayed alphanumerically, but the total. You cannot use scan in conjunction with the tone alert function and paging. Scanning occurs separately in the VHF and UHF bands. You can reverse the direction by turning the Tuning control or MESSAGE key. This function operates only in the VFO mode. Notes 1 Initialize the VFO memory (VFO RESET) to clear both programmed limits simultaneously. Press and hold the F key and turn on the power. You can reprogram either limit independently. You can override this programming by using the SHIFT key as described in the preceding paragraph. You can select any offset frequency in the range 0 to 99.9 MHz in 100 kHz steps.Several different methods are currently in use.http://eco-region31.ru/boston-driver-s-manual In the United States, sub-audible tones are sometimes used. This transceiver will generate sub- audible frequencies. In Europe and the United Kingdom, a 1750 Hz tone is used in transmitting. This feature allows you to dial a telephone number from your transceiver and carry on a telephone conversation. This function requires the use of a DTMF (Dual Tone Multi Frequency) keypad. Storing DTMF Codes Press the M key, then press the MHz key to select the DTMF code entry mode. 2 Enter the DTMF code on the keypad 3 Press the MR key after entering the DTMF code. Note Transmission continues until the whole code string is recalled, even if the PTT switch is released. The CTCSS unit (TSU-7) installation instruction are shown on page 63. If the Continuous Tone Code Squelch System (CTCSS) function is activated, the transceiver will not open squelch until it receives the proper PL tone (tone squelch). Once squelch is activated, it operates normally from then on. If no signal is received for more than two seconds, squelch turns off until the transceiver receives a matching code. M e m o r y C o d e Stores your station ID code in memory. Automatically stores the calling station’s code during reception. In the code setting mode In the Paging mode The group code 789 and your station ID code 111 are transmitted. Calling a Specific Group Member Use the following procedure to call a specific group member: 1 Select the local station code memory. Receiving a Page with an Individual Code 1 When the proper code is received, your squelch will open and you will hear an alert tone sequence coming from the speaker.https://elitesoftsolutions.com/images/compact-pistol-with-manual-safety.pdf It is possible to reprogram the transceiver so that squelch will open regardless of the incoming page code. Even when signal squelch is canceled, a beep sounds and the individual code of the local station is displayed when the proper code is received. You can use the numerics 0 to 9 and letters A to Z. The message that can be transmitted and received at one time can be up to six characters long. If you press the MESSAGE key in the message mode, the last stored message is displayed. You can store your message in memory using one of the following two methods. If you use the tone alert function with the CTCSS, paging, or DTSS function, you can use the functional more effectively since you can wait for a call from a specific remote station. If you want to disable this function, press and hold the 6 key and press the POWER switch. We recommend that before connecting the earphone, you set the volume level to the minimum and perform the following operation to protect your ears. The battery saver circuit activates 10 seconds after the last key is pressed. The squelch must be closed. This function deactivates whenever a key is pressed or the squelch opens. The time is displayed on a 24-hour basis. If you press the F key, then the 7 key again, the clock is canceled, and the normal frequency display returns. If you prefer duplex operation, i.e. Receive audio from sub-band is fed to the speaker during transmit you must perform the following procedure. You can change this factory-set message to your own message as follows: Changing Power-on Message 1 Select your message by following steps 1 to 4 of the memory write procedure on page 44. Under normal circumstances the transceiver will operate in accordance with these instruction manuals. All adjustable trimmers and coils in your transceiver has been adjusted at the factory and should only be readjusted by a qualified technician with proper test equipment. Symptom Indicators do not light and no receiver noise is heard when the POWER switch is turned on. No sound from the speaker. No signal can be received. No control works. TO DO THIS Temporarily change the volume or frequency of the band that cannot control DetermIne if a frequency is in use before transmitting The LCD illumination lamp lights Change the frequency in 1 MHz step. If you want to send me a radio I may make the time to investigate the heck out of it. Those who complained rad the new processor installed by Kenwood when it became available. (There are two microprocessors in the TH-78; we're referring to the one at IC 5. Replacement microprocessors may have a paper label pasted on the top surface.). This would be in keeping with the U.S. Electronic Communications Privacy Act, which resulted in similar changes to scanners. Unscrew four screws and break apart the radio halves. These have a tendency to fall off when opening or closing the radio. De-solder the shield's four corners with a pin-point soldering iron and lift it with right-angle surgical tweezers. To an eye used to standard-sized electronic components these millimeter-wide specks seem too small for removal. Removing diodes is done by using a pin-point-tip soldering iron and braid (to wick away the solder before you lift out the diode). The diode can also be lifted slightly but left in place. Then reset the processor (as documented in the manual) and re-enter any frequencies into memory. Frequencies can be programed in up to the 920 MHz ham band but I have no way of measuring sensivity. 800 MHz works but the signals are very weak, you must be near the transmitter for reception. Assuming you are in the town or city where the transmissions originate, it should work. Be aware that the radio gets hot. Prolonged use or use on a busy frequency would not be recommended. The TH-78's memory can be copied from one to another entirely over the air, without cables or other special equipment. Perhaps it's time to spend a few minutes in a ham store.:-) Of course, given that the ME-1 memory expansion unit has 250 memories, laziness is understandable. The display will briefly show one of the characters '1', '2', '3', or 'F'. Press the corresponding key. The game consists of repeating the displayed character sequence, which increases by one character each round. Then press 'F' to deal five cards. The face value of the cards are displayed; the suits may be seen at any time by holding down the PTT key. Any number of cards may be discarded, and to select (or deselect) a card for discarding, press the keys '1', '2', '3', '4', or '5'.Your new cards will be displayed. If your hand is 2 pair or better, the screen will show the rank of your hand on the left (2P for 2 pair, 4K for four of a kind, etc.). The pay-off for that hand will be displayed on the right. Your bet is multiplied by the pay-off factor and the resulting pile of cash is displayed in the right hand side of the upper screen. The left-hand side of the upper screen contains your table stakes, which are initially 100 coins from winning the Simon game. If you lose the poker hand, your bet is deducted from your stakes and you are asked to start another poker hand. If you say no, your winnings are credited into your stakes and you are asked to start another poker hand. You have to choose to go for either BIG or SMALL, by pressing '2' or '5'. You can keep pressing '2' and '5' to change your mind. When you are ready, you must try to hit the 'F' key to stop the rotating card display, and the card will show, and you will either win, lose, or draw. If you lose, your winnings are gone and you can play poker again.I haven't managed to do this, so I don't know if there is anything beyond this. When the table stakes are exhausted, you go back to playing Simon again. While there's little that can be done (and what can is noted), being aware of the problem is most of the battle. The antenna is mounted on a mail BNC plug, which is in turn connected to the radio innards with a rigid solder joint instead of a flexible wire. Remember what the manual says about transmitting without the antenna. You can burn out your radio while you're trying to figure out what's wrong. If you're electrically minded I suggest a prophylactic first strike with a soldering iron and a centimeter of wire. The contents of memory had been lost. The problem is that pins on the back side of the PCB that is mounted on the front half of the TH-78 can come into contact with the volume control housings mounted on the PCB on the other half of the unit. My radio had this problem until I put electrical tape across these housings. Symptoms were display blanking momentarily and the radio power cycling, sometimes causing memory erase when pressure was applied to the front of the unit or to the volume controls. If you find the need to replace C-17, use a gap-fill cyanoacrylate glue like Zap-A-Gap (tm) to increase the device footprint. I have learned the hard way. Otherwise, I have found it to be a fine radio. My only problems have been related to the C-17 issue and attempts to rectify it. Had I been given the above advice, it would have been a one-time only issue. As it is, I took out one of the microprocessors yesterday looking for a bad solder joint that was induced by my attempt to solve the C-17 problem (sigh). This radio gets a lot of use and a lot of travel.Select a UHF frequency on the VFO. Set the CTCSS tone frequency to some arbitrary number, say, 94.8 Hz. Turn on the CTCSS. Save the whole thing under the call channel for UHF. Select another UHF frequency. Select another CTCSS tone. Turn the sub-audible tone on and save it under a spare memory channel.I asked for confirmation of this feature. Checking the power consumption under various configurations, Will came up with the following suggestions: Battery consumption with the squelch closed is cut by almost a third.A small strip of aluminum from the positive battery terminal to the depression in the top of the case will allow you to recharge the pack inside the rig. Many of those that do are closed anyway. You can probably get by without them. In the Philadelphia area most of the open 440 MHz repeaters use CTCSS and none of the 2-meter ones do. At least one uses CTCSS for remote inputs. About 60 miles away in southern New Jersey, all of the 2 meter and 440 repeaters use CTCSS. I guess there are some secret codes to switch it to the American bands, but I don't know them. I use the autodialer regularly. I don't have much use for the message memory other than the start-up trick though. The RF generator output level was increased until a 12 db fall in audio (noise) was measured. Check the version of your transceiver first by looking at the following illustration. By ANTTENA the time you reach the end of this manual, you will CONNECT One of the default frequencies should appear on the display. The default setting is as follows: The squelch helps eliminate “white noise” or static until you receive active communications on a frequency. To set the squelch controls: This point is known as the Squelch Threshold point. If you don’t have a particular freqency to enter, we suggest you try 145.050MHz. A 4 is entered as the 10MHz digit, and the 1MHz and below digits change to -. The 1 kHz digit is not displayed if it is a zero. The 10-kHz keys and frequencies set with the keys are listed below. The current frequency step size will be displayed. The frequency step is indicated in the chart below. If you were to change the step size to 12.5kHz, the display would read 439.925 MHz. The procedure for specifying the bands is described below. This selects the lower This selects the upper frequency limit for the programmable VFO. The transceiver should not go above or below the programmed band limits. Failure to provide a proper load may cause damage to the final amplifier section. Always check that the frequency is clear before transmitting. The ON AIR indicator and battery level meter will appear. Talking closer or farther away can result in loss of clarity, an excessively wide transmit signal, or weak audio. The ON AIR and battery level meter indicators should go out. Repeat this function to stop through the power level selections. The actial transmitter output power for this unit depends on the power supply used. Indicators will appear on the display to tell you which level you have selected. Use Economic Low power for line- of-sight short-distance communication. The squelch helps eliminate “white noise” or static until you receive active communications on a frequency. There are two squelch controls, one for the UHF band and one for the VHF band. The 1 kHz digit is not displayed if it is a zero. Rotate the tuning control clockwise or counterclockwise to select the desired operating frequency. 4 Step Size Selection 1 2 14 The transceiver must be in the VFO mode to select frequency steps. Failure to provide a proper load may cause damage to the final amplifier section. Stop Function The TX Stop function allows you to temporally disable the transceiver transmit, preventing accidental or unauthorized transmission. Stop function on or off. No indicator means the high power position has been selected. It is not lost unless you reset the memory. All other data that you set is retained by a secondary lithium battery that will provide memory backup for about 20 days if you remove the battery pack or external DC power.
