kensington portable combination laptop lock manualA cable is connected to the locking mechanism, which allows you to secure your item to a solid object. In order to properly use your Kensington cable lock, you need to reset the factory preset combination and learn the proper technique for securing your electronic items. Twist the reset tool clockwise until the separate black marks on the edge of the lock come together to form a straight line. The locking mechanism is now ready to learn the new code. Turn each of the number dials to one number in the new combination. Make sure the combination is a number you can easily remember. The Kensington cable lock now opens with the new combination. This is known as a Kensington security slot, or K-Slot. Kensington cable locks are compatible with K-Slots. If you can easily remove the cable from the object you are wrapping it around, the lock is not effective. Slide the locking mechanism through the hole in the cable and insert the T-Bar of the lock into the K-Slot. The T-Bar is located on the same side of the lock as the cable. With the button pressed in, turn all of the dials on the lock so your combination is not showing. Pull on the lock to ensure it is properly inserted into the K-Slot and secure. Turn the lock back 90 degrees and remove it from the K-Slot. A serial number is etched onto the lock, making it easy to retrieve your combination. With this combination lock I am totally lost figuring out how to use it and change the combination. I found nothing online as far as videos for setting this thing up. Kensington should hire somebody who is better at writing useful instructions rather than just draw bad illustrations to demonstrate what appears to be more complex. Their online version of instructions are the same as what they give you in the box which takes less than a five seconds to read and not understand. There are more videos online to show how to crack this combination lock than how to use it. Stay away from this product unless you like being frustrated or going blind trying to read the tiny instructions.Would not quite fit into the indentation where the hole for the lock is located. I returned it and purchased a different model after contacting Kensington for advice. In any case the cord was coiled so tight that it would have pulled the EC or any lightweight piece of equipment off the table. I thought about keeping it for my laptop.If you're looking for a cheap theft deterrent, this works. It's simple to set up, and fairly reliable in that respect. However, that's the products real purpose. While everything is built strongly in and of itself, there are issues: -The cable is short, thin, and coiled. This makes it hard to truly get much comfort or room out of it, and could probably be snipped with anything a bit more powerful if not with a pair of large firm adult scissors. Plus, the coiling means it'll get all messed up, like your childhood toy the slinkee. However, the shortness, despite how it is annoying, could cause it to be more difficult to get out of somewhere like a table without having to move your laptop, which is a good deterrent. Overall, it's great for deterring, but maybe a little expensive for what you're getting. I mainly got it because I know it goes with their securetek backpack, which is the product I'm very interested to get soon. EDIT: My original review said it was wobbly. This was the device I was using it on's fault. It is not wobbly, my laptop's locking port is just big.Very useful for things like hotels, trains or other situations where you don't really want to take your laptop with you everywhere but you can't otherwise easily secure it. No security is 100 perfect and a thief with a bolt cutter or just one who doesn't care about damaging what he's trying to steal could still make off with your laptop. This lock is small enough to carry in a laptop bag, and it re-coils itself when you're done with it. Easy to change the combination to something only you know. (Just make it something you can remember.) I do wish the cable was a little longer but then it would start to get a little bulky, so the length it is is probably a reasonable compromise.The manual for the lock is incredibly ambiguous. There is no clear procedure concerning setting the combination, but I think that I got that part right regardless. The main issue was that the T bar, which is supposed to secure the lock, was faulty. Instead of turning a full 90 degrees, as the manual seems to illustrate, the lock I was given rotated only about 30 degrees. Due to the vague manual, however, I didn't realize the defect initially, and I put the lock in the laptop. For an hour, I tried to get the lock out; in the end, I was able to pull it out; it hadn't even locked properly.
