Kube 200 A new active low-level equaliser available as an option an designed for use with certain KEF Reference Series loudspeakers. It provides fixed and variable equalisation to suit listening environment, loudspeaker placement and user preferences. In recent years much of KEF’s product development programme has been directed towards the problems of living with loudspeakers and the difficulties the user has with fitting them into the listening environment in terms of appearance and performance. These developments have been designed to increase the speakers’ versatility and flexibility in use and to provide the user with the means to enhance and optimise their performance. KEF’s KUBE equaliser project is a part of these developments.KUBE 200 provides fixed equalisation which extends the loudspeaker’s bass response below its normal, unequalised cut-off point.https://events.citeve.pt/chat-conversation/boss-od-1-manual It offers variable low and high frequency equalisation The HF Contour control adjusts the high frequency level above 1kHz, while the LF Contour control adjusts the low frequency level below 160Hz, controlling the balance between bass and midrange. Recent research has indicated that room boundary effects on bass response are more complex than hitherto supposed. KUBE 200’s LF Contour control applies equalisation specifically calculated to compensate for the actual effects of room boundaries on the perceived bass response of the speaker. This allows mixed systems to be set up that contain both KUBE-equalised and ordinary unequalised speakers. KUBE 200 is enclosed in an attractive anodised aluminium sleeve with a heavy machined aluminium front panel. High-quality low-noise devices are used throughout.KUBE 200 has tape recorder input and outputs and a tape monitor switch to provide the monitor function when the KUBE 200 must be connected in the tape monitor loop of a receiver or amplifier. A Bypass EQ switch is provided to allow KUBE 200 to be removed from the signal path when circumstances dictate, or to facilitate comparisons during set up. To preserve high signal-to-noise ratio, KUBE 200 is powered by a separate outboard power supply, reducing the possibility of electronic interference. I understand from the user manual that these speakers are designed to work with the Kube which, as a separate item, is not so commonly available. I'm wondering if these speakers, as good as their drivers are recognised to be, are not really worth much at all without the Kube. Many thanks, RichardIt won't go as deep without it. On the positive side it was just a 2nd order HPF with a hump causing the system to act as a sixth order highpass (4th order is coming from the reflex tuning of the speaker). The one who desigend it (can't remember his name) is also a member of this forum and he once posted something about it. With the search function you may probaly find it. The circuit as such isn't complicated - you just have to find the right dimensioning. Regards CharlesBe aware that some of the KUBEs did a lot more than just bass EQ, giving considerable midrange flattening also. Can't exactly remember which camp the 102 fell into. Try this website SpeakerTalk:: View Forum - KEF Speakers from the 1970s Either search there or contact speakerguru, a long time KEF engineer. Nothing would stop you from careful equalization on your own with either analog or digital means. David S.Having followed up on the posts as suggested I find again I'm bewildered by the height of expertise available on these forums. Congratulations! Back on the Kefs a moment, 'speaker dave'. You think I can with careful EQ bring these speakers back, within reason, to how they were meant to sound, albeit without the extended bass. Sounds like a good place to start. My amp is a Stereo Reciever NAD 7020e rated at 35w into 4ohms. The Kef 102 speakers require an amplifier capable of delivering 50 to 200 watts into 4 ohms. I am a little under powered here, would it be alright or should I be looking for another amp. Thanks again, RichardThe addition of the Kube then flattened the response. By the way, this is not much different than the original Bose 901 and its EQ. So the 102 will rise considerably in the mids (say around 2k) and will be soft in the bass. If you set up and equalizer with the opposite of that curve, that is a good start. You can have the extended bass as well, with some modest EQ at a frequency just below the natural rolloff. I would still urge you to visit the KEF site. If you can find a graph of the Kube curve you will be that far ahead in creating the right curve, even with a graphic EQ just trying to approximate it. I think speakerguru has even been able to link some people up with missing Kubes, so it doesn't hurt to ask. Regarding power, give your NAD a try before you discard it. Required power is a funny thing. 5 or 10 watts is usually way more than you need, but some times 300 watts isn't nearly enough. It really depends on how loud you like to listen, how far from the speakers you are, how dead your room is, etc. The benefit of the Kube is that the system efficiency could be maximized rather than thrown away to extend the bass. I don't think you need 50 to 200 watts. Regards, David S.Perhaps at some stage I might be able to find a Kube to try, though now I'd be very curious to hear what can be done with some equalization. As you suggest I think I'll give my NAD a go. I'm sure I'll be happy with it for now. Most of my listening is done at low volume and fairly close in to the speakers. I really appreciate your help and if I turn up some good results I'll let you know. Regards, RichardI designed most of the KUBE EQ's, and other than the KUBE for the 104.2, most of them applied midrange EQ in addition to bass extension. You could attempt to compensate this by tone controls or an equaliser, but you are not likely to readily get the correct compensation without measurement tools. Documentation on all the different KUBEs is sparse. I have attempted to get this myself from time to time but with limited success. Get ready to wish them happy birthday! It fits in beautifully with my speaker system with nice, clear bass. The KHT3005SE speakers are usually mated with the HTB2 sub, but I prefer the look of the KUBE-2. Clean simple lines. Nice geometric shape. The HTB2 looks a bit too busy for my taste, and the illuminated KEF logo on top is rather gimmicky. Also, I prefer to hide the bass driver behind a cover -- naked drivers bother me. Notably, the HTB2 lacks both a Crossover Frequency Control and a Level Control. Since my Nakamichi AV-10 receiver has neither control for the subwoofer, the KUBE-2 is definitely the better choice for me. The KUBE-2 produces nice deep bass, which is great for movies. The top black glass plate is surrounded by a fabric from all sides. The rear control panel is embedded into it. There is a 200mm bass driver in the Kube 8b’s cabinet but the driver cannot be seen as the fabric cannot be removed. Don’t be afraid to experiment as actually you may find that cabinet voicing is the best for you while the sub is actually not in any cabinet. The good thing is that the Kube 8b can be connected via loudspeaker cable to amplifier or speakers. The power inlet is of IEC C8 type so no use for aftermarket high end cords here. Everything is clean and well thought. In my room I hear less bass at 50Hz point which is a result of room modes. The only thing I can do about it is to move my listening chair. This solves the problem but creates another problems at different frequencies. Anyway, I tried to tackle the issue with the KEF. When such a spot was found I moved the sub over there and set it up by ears. How to do this is described in detail in our articles. But the low rumble filled in the whole house.Up to ca 25m2 it will be a good companion for stand-mounted speakers or for bookshelf monitors. It looks nice which counts a lot as most subwoofers are just big black ugly boxes. When critically auditioned it reliable added the bottom octave to Steinway grand piano even with floorstanding speakers and complemented their ambience. Without it the music breathed less. When I played loud bass heavy music I could hear the fabric resonate. This was audible with sustained signals like synthesizers or organ and did not appear in transient programmes like kick drum or electric bass. It is also possible that only the reviewed piece was doing so. I had to pull the 50 kgs of the sub upstairs and it was not an easy job, rather an.We have published many pages about subwoofers and how to set them up correctly. S SS Range of listening window'adjustments 15 To check polarity, bring the loudspeakers close together and facing each other. Play a mono signal through both simultaneously. Reverse the polarity of the leads to one of the loudspeakers and repeat the test. The bass will be much fuller and rounder when the polarity is correct. An organ recording is usually best suited for this purpose. Speaker Location Model 105 Series il is capable of giving a stable stereo image over a wide listening area with an unusually vivid sense of depth perspective. Since this is achieved in part by the shaping and proportioning of the enclosures to permit sound to diffract smoothly, these benefits may be impaired by reflections from nearby walls. The loudspeakers should therefore be stationed at least 1m from side walls and a minimum of 50cm from any back wall. The spacing between the two speakers, and the listening distance from the speakers is important. If the speakers are placed too close together, the stereo image will not be developed. For normal listening, placement will usually be between 2m and 4m apart depending upon the listening distance and the room size. The listeners' distance from the speakers should be equal to, or greater than, the distance between the loudspeakers, fig 13. Operating Adjustments The listening window The tonal quality and clarity of the reproduction, and above all, the sharpness of the stereo image, are determined by the sound that reaches the listener directly, without reflection from walls, floor or ceiling. Ideally, therefore, the frequency response of the loudspeaker, and hence the spectral content of the programme, should be constant over an area covering all the listeners. In a multi-unit loudspeaker, the polar characteristics, i.e. the variation in response with the direction of radiation, depend on the size, shape and positioning of the drive units and of their enclosures, together with the electrical characteristics of the crossover filters. The orientation of the head assembly is indicated by a light-emitting diode (LED) energised by the audio signal fed to the loudspeaker. The LED is masked so that the TEST AK LEVELS ARKI SLIYMBOL 3 16. a. CC 12 BEROES... AMAN coin 20 glow, is visible only within the optimum listening areas. As long as every listener can see both lights of a stereo pair, there will be no blurring or instability of the images through differences in response of left and right hand loudspeakers. Direct head assembly towards the listening position. Select programme signal with low dynamic range. Interstation noise or hash' from an FM receiver is convenient for this purpose. Increase level of volume until LED is continuously illuminated, fig 17. Peak level indicator Under programme conditions, amplifier peak clipping can occur even when the average power into the loudspeaker (which is directly related to sound level) appears quite low. This causes audible distortion. So that the listener may know when audible distortion is a result of amplifier overload, Model 105 Series Il is fitted with a peak level indicator. This function is provided by the same LED which is used for setting up the listening window. The rotary switch at the rear of the head assembly is graduated from 50 to 200 watts in seven steps and should be set to correspond to the rated output power of your amplifier (into 8 ohms) fig 20. If your amplifier has an output greater than 200 watts the switch should be left in the 200 watts position (see also next section - power amplifiers). The LED will glow when the peak-to-peak voltage from your amplifier exceeds that required to deliver its rated output power into 8 ohms. The time constant associated with the overload indicator has been chosen so that the visual indication corresponds to the onset of audible distortion. Power Amplifiers The Model 105 Series II will operate satisfactorily with power amplifiers capable of delivering 50-200 watts into 8 ohms. Amplifiers larger than 200 watts may be used but on no account should their rating exceed 400 watts, as peak voltages in excess of 70V may damage the S-STOP protection circuit. It is important that the peak level indicator switch is set to the 200 watt position when amplifiers of between 200-400 watts are used. N.B. If the amplifier is driven at such a level that the LED flashes more or less continuously in the 200 watt position, then the programme rating of the system is being exceeded and the protection circuit is likely to operate. Occasional peaks of 200 watts are permissible. S-STOP Protection Circuit S-STOP (Steady State and Transient Overload Protection) is a self-powered electronic circuit which protects the system from accidental overload. Three protection modes are provided - peak, thermal, and low frequency excursion, and whenever the safe thresholds are exceeded, a relay operated attenuator reduces the input to a safe level, Peak The peak protection mode causes the S-STOP circuit to operate whenever peak voltages to the system are so high as to be damaging to the dividing network, or likely to cause unacceptable distortion levels on programme peaks. Thermal In the thermal sensor mode the input level to each drive unit voice coil is monitored, and whenever their safe operating temperature is reached S-STOP is activated. Each Model 105 Series Il is supplied with a 10m length of suitable cable that will not audibly degrade sound quality and which should be long enough for most installations. If longer cables are required, the total resistance should not exceed approximately 0.3 ohm.
