You can still hear it, even when it's off. For two, it tends to be a bit thin sounding at times. Keeley helps try to fix these options, as well as adding some new things to help make this pedal a lot more versatile than before. UTILIZATION The peda is housed in your typical Boss enclosure. These things are tough as nails and can withstand all kinds of punishment. The manual no longer is applicable thanks to this being modded, but it's still very easy to figure out. The switch is the biggest feature that this thing has. It allows you to select between two different diodes, but it's really only useful if you're using some gain on the pedal. Everything else is pretty much the same as your typical Boss pedal. SOUND QUALITY The pedal sounds great. First off, I'm really glad he did a special buffer in this thing to help prevent some leakage that normally occurs with these pedals. Otherwise, it's almost unusable on the clean channel with the gain up high. I tend to use these as boosters rather than gain adders. That means I tend to turn the gain off and crank the level. This is like a strong clean boost rather than a gritty boost which is how most people use it as. The switch on this selects between two different diodes to give you various flavors of this boost. On top of that, it's a lot thicker sounding than the stock version, which is a definite welcome. OVERALL OPINION If you're looking for a solid boost pedal with asymmetrical clipping, I would recommend this pedal. It does a great job, and you can get some aggressive boosting going on without it sounding too thin like certain other pedals do. This version is a bit more versatile and more modern sounding than the Analogman one, but the Monte Allums one has the most features, so feel free to choose which one you personally think is best. yes no. The reason is because so many professionals have used this slamming the front of their Marshall JCM800's. Which is pretty much the reason I bought this pedal. I think there are definitely poor things about this pedal but keeley in my opinion has addressed. One being the volume loss and the overall tonal characteristics are enhanced from the Keeley mod. And man does this thing get LOUD!! This mod makes this pedal go from cool but sort of week volume to turn that thing down because its too loud!! It is a simple layout as all Boss units are, and controls are as followed. Level, Tone, and Drive The Keeley mod adds a switch to the right side of the unit that changes the diode clipping style of the distortion. UTILIZATION Extremely easy to use and no need of a manual. However, Keeley does include a manual for his 5 start tone stack which what he calls his mod to this pedal. Plus this unit came with an additional chip inside that change the clipping and tone as well. Not sure the name for it.I think it was called the brown chip or something. I never really flipped in and out the chips but once to test.found the one I liked and used that exclusively. SOUND QUALITY The sound quality is fantastic if you are trying to slam the front of your overdriven amp. It will do that 80's tone in spades. So my use was normally just as a simple booster to get the amp sizzling even more. Made jamming really much more pleasurable. It was warm and somewhat smooth but I would call is a bit sleazy. This is a pedal you don't take home to mom.it is a pedal that you told tell your parents about but show off to your friends for high fives if that makes sense. It gives you that pissed off Marshall tone that you hear on so many records from the 80's hard rock glam metal genre. I used it with my Les Paul and Strat style guitar in front of an 80's JCM 800 and Splawn QR. It is not suitable for really low drop tunings unless its pushing an already heavily overdriven amp. This application would probably make your amp tighter and more focused. Would I get another one of these.probably if I get another unmolested Marshall JMP or JCM 800. I would recommend this mod too as it adds a cool transparency to your stomp box. It is also to make the SD-1 almost true-bypass and prevent sound leakage especially when the pedal is off and the volume knob is more than three quarters. No loss of true-bypass, it's perfect. This is a switch for selecting a germanium diode rectification (low position) or by LEDs (high position). Nothing wrong side features, it's reliable, it's well thought out (thank you Boss format), the mini-switch is perfectly placed. Impeccable. UTILIZATION The general configuration is very simple, especially as the SD-1 is supplied with a written by Robert Keeley manual to explain the benefits of the change. And that's exactly what I'm looking, I was disappointed by a Maxon OD-808 that I kept 4 or 5 years. SOUND QUALITY Admit as much at once, the sound on the clean channel of a tube amp is pretty good without either rock the house. This type of sound can appeal, but here I still find that my Maxon OD-808 was doing a little better. This Keeley SD-1 is, however, largely the work and can suit many guitarists. On an already saturated channel, it is a different story and there the sound is sublime. It surpasses anything I've tried in overdrive. It adds that little extra power and sharpness that sometimes missing on this property heavy metal riff or passage well without adding too much fat might make less precise sound. I became interested in one of Keeley Electronics’ latest modified pedals, the Boss DS-1 Seeing Eye Mod (SEM) after learning that pro players Steve Vai and Joe Satriani were using it. Well, I’m no Steve Vai or Joe Satriani on guitar, but was still very curious about Keeley’s transformation of the DS-1, which happens to be among Boss’ oldest and longest-lasting pedal designs. This can make for some ice-pick piercing treble distortion, especially at louder band-practice and gig levels, which probably also explains the reason why Steve Vai and Joe Satriani set there unmodded DS-1s to relatively lower-gain settings and used the unit’s volume control more as a boost. All in all, the unmodified DS-1 sonically when used as the only source of distortion is more suited to that of the bedroom-player or user who wants the effect at lower volumes. The intention of the DS-1 SEM was to not only increase the amount of gain available, but also make it usable, smoother gain through careful tuning of the tone control network. Beyond tuning the DS-1 SEM for better tone through new values of parts, many of the original unit’s parts were discarded and substituted for premium components such as tantalum capacitors. The tone knob has a sensibly voiced range: instant closed-back heft or Blackface glassiness awaits at the flick of the three-way pre-clipping EQ switch. It has a more neutral EQ-curve than the String-Singer and an arguably more versatile voice that can take you from Clapton ’s Blues Breakers days to Kossoff to Young. Stack both together and you’ll be rewarded with a soaring solo tone. It takes inspiration from the fabled Klon Centaur as a jumping-off point, making changes to the transparent drive circuit that according to its creator, offers “a slight boost in clarity” and improves on the device’s smoother overdrive sounds. As a boost pedal, the Mjolnir delivers clean decibels in volumes, and even more so than in previous iterations, as the gain control has been tweaked to have even more headroom. Surprisingly, this pedal is not another clone, but an interesting hybrid of two cult classic pedals, the Maxon SD-9 and Boss DS-1. While this may seem like an odd pair, Keeley has packed a whole lot of pedal into a small and affordable package. Starting on the front, we have controls for Level, Tone, Distortion, Cutoff, and in the middle is the switch for changing between the SD or DS modes. The Cutoff knob is essentially two knobs in one, as it controls the bass cutoff for the SD and DS. One of the reasons the original SD-9 was so loved (and the main gripe people had with it), was it didn’t have that annoying low end cutoff that the Tube Screamer had. The main complaint was however, that the SD-9 was too boomy, and generated a lot of unusable low-end noise. On SD mode, with the cutoff turned all the way to the left (“off” essentially), it still suffered from boominess and that low-end annoyance. I found having it at a little over 9 o’clock helped alleviate some of those boomier artifacts, but there was still a little too much low end disturbance for my taste. The Tone control is a filter, which gives you a high end cutoff, useful for taming the more shrill frequencies. It is in the same ballpark as a Tube Screamer (as one would expect), but I find it was lot clearer and more balanced. Tube Screamers suffer from midrange congestion, as they are built for cutting through the mix. They do it well, but they can sound boxy at times. The DS-9 took away everything I dislike about a Tube Screamer, and brought to the forefront a beautiful, articulate, and very tube-like grit. The DS-9 is extremely open sounding, and very rounded. It’s got that mellow, hollow drive that I lay awake at night pining for. It has thick bottom end, clear and open mids, and a very crisp and clear top that to me defines what makes an overdrive great. The whole point of an overdrive is to make your amp sound like it’s on the edge of breakup, and the DS-9 really sounded like my amp on the verge of grit, without deafening me in the process. The DS-9 was utterly tubeless, and utterly glorious. While this unnamed tube pedal still sounded great in its own right, it just didn’t have the same warm and clear character the DS-9 had. My favorite setting was on the SD mode; diming the level all the way, keeping the distortion a little over noon, the tone around 9 o’clock and the cutoff between 9 and 10 o’clock. On the neck pickup of a Strat, these are the blues and fusion tones you dream of. I busted out Steely Dan and Jeff Beck numbers (in both SD and DS modes respectively), and the DS-9 completely nailed them. Slowing down with a bit of David Gilmour or Stevie Ray Vaughn, the DS-9 handled them with ease and beauty. This is an incredible overdrive, for those sick of Tube Screamers, but still wanting what makes them great. Incredible tube-like tones. Versatile choice of distortion and overdrive. Incredible Price. It can be a tough challenge to decide and to find pedals that suits your rig and purpose. The wrong pedal for your amp and guitar, can do more harm than good and cause a lot of frustration. Do I want boost, overdrive, distortion or fuzz.
