Poor surface preparation and quality control was also a problem with our VR-3, so my only conclusion is that it is endemic to all KBC helmets.http://honyi.tw/ckfinder/userfiles/ktm-pdf-manual.xml

We ordered a size XL but this helmet fits just like a size large, so bear this in mind if you’re planning on ordering a VR-2. The internal shape feels relatively neutral, round-ish on top and slightly too tight on the sides. I’m not sure why you think this is a better feature, KBC? There is very little room for my chin and nose inside the VR-2, unlike most size XL helmets I’ve worn and even when compared to the KBC VR-3. A secondary result of the crowded interior is that there is no escape for my moist breath. So overall I give poor marks to the quality of the mechanism on this example. In this particular case, it is partly due to the tight fit of the helmet, which keeps the padding tight against the ear, eliminating most of the noise. However, the back of the helmet picks up some turbulence in this position and the noise induced by this turbulence increases. The helmet includes a small built-in chin curtain, which also probably helps reduce some of the noise. The dual chin vents direct the air through a screen mesh and up through a saw-tooth opening behind the visor (yellow arrow in the photo above). I can barely feel any air at all coming through the chin vent. Again like the VR-3 (and I’m using some of the same words here because the VR-2 is nearly identical), the liner is nicely made and it’s comfortable. All rights reserved. Need to wear hearing protection for normal riding, not just for the loud exhaust. I am satisfied with the helmet other than the noise. Thanks for your article.” It prompted me to look more carefully before my purchase but ultimately decided to buy one, great fit, great graphics and brilliant value for money. For further information call RaceVisors.co.uk as they sorted me out with one phone call.http://atomleasing.ru/media/ktm_repair_manual_2014.xml” My thinking is that it is smaller because it is a “race” helmet. I tried one on in medium and noticed it was way tighter than the medium Force RR that I also tried on. I ended up with the RR. It will not seal and there is no click when you shut it. When you install the face shield you have to make sure that the tab gets “clicked” into that lower track. Then all is snug and well. I have attached a copy of the picture that you used in the review with the visor tab circled that I am talking about. I hope this helps. The carbon fiber itself also makes a cool-looking helmet without having to resort to garish paint or distracting graphics! First up was the KBC VR-1 (review), which was reviewed back around 2003. It’s available in the “raw” carbon fiber shown here or as a U.S. Olympic Replica graphic version. Perhaps they’re sponsoring the U.S. bobsled team in the coming Olympics? And finally, their “Dirt Wear” line includes a single helmet also, the VMX, in one color. Now you’d think with only 3 helmet types to manufacture that they’d have time to perfect all the little details that make the difference between “good” and “great”. I’ll explain more as we get to the Ventilation section. But the VR4R has some very nice lines, with a subtle upsweep along the sides and a pair of shallow creases outlining the exhaust vent in the rear.http://www.familyreunionapp.com/family/events/boss-mgr350b-manual The helmet is also covered in a thick clear coat, which makes the carbon fiber weave simply pop. Not a single weave is out of place and that is very difficult to achieve. More about that in an upcoming section also. But that vent design is problematic. That’s really too bad, because it affects the overall impression of this helmet. Anyway, more on that in a bit. The helmet shell is outstanding; the liner I’d rate as excellent but the vent hardware is rated as poor. See the Summary Table at the bottom of the page for a description of our rating system. This seems to be a trend, broken by the VR4R. This helmet is a size large and KBC says it should fit a 59-60 cm head. It’s serviceable and decent; the padding is about average and the fabric is fairly soft, with average-feeling materials about the quality of an AFX helmet. Black or some dark, neutral matte color would be better here in my opinion. The padding and liner feels comfortable and the helmet should fit neutral to slightly narrow head shapes. That red fabric on either side of the cheek pads is really distracting though in my opinion. It’s a case of style over function and apparently the stylists won. The face shield removal system is excellent and easy to use. The face shield also snaps smartly through its four detents and it has a first opening position for defogging that works well, although it’s a slightly larger opening than is optimal for this purpose. Push up on a lever and the shield pops out. This is illustrated in the video below. No water leaked into the eye port past the gasket. But the biggest problem with the vents is the design of the chin vent and rear exhaust vent covers, which have a very loose and flimsy feel, as illustrated in the video below. The chin vent slider is loose and the plastic feels thin. It has very weak detents, which allow it to flop back and forth. But at least the detents feel more solid.http://iacfhouston.com/images/combivert-f5-compact-manual.pdf The center vent on top has at least a solid feel and the two side vents click open and closed. It’s a safety issue. KBC should have made the rear exhaust an “always on” system instead of the overly-complex, very flimsy vent they designed. In terms of performance, the chin vent is a bit weak. The air from the chin vent flows up in back of the chin bar, but the air flow is weak. It’s a real shame and it affects one’s impression of the helmet. If KBC can fix this quality issue — and make the vents more effective — they’d have a real winner here. Otherwise, the noise levels are about average to slightly better than average for the VR4R. See the wBW Earplug Reviews for more information on choosing and wearing earplugs. There’s a plastic snap on the left to secure the loose end, but the left side of the strap that holds the D-ring is about 10 mm too short. The face shield design is also very nice and the removal system works really well. Also, the vinyl on the bottom of the helmet feels cheap — there’s no other word for it — and ours started to show wear almost immediately. If they can do this, the VR4R Carbon would move from average to outstanding in short order. All rights reserved. Product specifications, features and details may change or differ from our descriptions. Always check before purchasing. Read the Terms and Conditions ! See details on submitting comments. First, it looks great and is noticeably lighter than my Shark RSI (review). The vents are indeed goofy but I leave them open all the time anyway so it’s not an issue for me. The replacement pads are black and gray so anyone who doesn’t like the red pads can replace them for about 20 bucks. The bolts that hold the ratchet plates to the helmet (2 on each side) work loose and fall out.The face shield was 100 percent watertight. Very impressive.” Shell finish, fit and face shield function are outstanding. Face shield does not leak. Period. I ride in the mountains a lot where it rains almost every afternoon and that is a big deal. If you need to be able to open and close vents while riding, buy another helmet. I have had helmets for years and have never seen that happen. So that’s pretty much it. I bought a mirrored visor which looks way cool.” Get all the best motorcycle news, reviews and deals delivered to your inbox weekly. Reliable and unbiased advice here. You’re In The Right Place. At the upper end of the spectrum lie popular Japanese and Italian brands that are known for their fit, finish and quality. At the opposite end of the spectrum lie up-and-coming — or worse yet, fly-by-night — brands, usually made in China, that tout much more affordable prices and colorful graphics, but have zero reputation for safety. Its newest model, the VR4R, is the latest example. Available in both a carbon fiber and a tri-composite shell, we were sent the former in this patriotic U.S. Olympic Replica color scheme. In case you don’t know, the American (and Canadian) Bobsled and Skeleton teams are sponsored by KBC and, in the case of the Americans, sport this exact same lid during competition. Coming in at approximately 2.85 pounds for a medium, according to KBC, it’s one of the lightest helmets I’ve ever put on my head. It’s important to note that the VR4R is ECE approved and meets D.O.T. standards, but was not put through Snell certification tests. Whether or not the European standard is sufficient is a personal choice, but if it’s good enough for Olympians, it’s good enough for me. In the case of the tri-composite shell that features carbon fiber, Kevlar and fiberglass construction, a medium version of it weighs in at about 3.15 pounds, which is still impressive. A “Perfect-Seal” ratcheting system helps ensure a proper closure each time the faceshield comes down. Speaking of facesheilds, the VR4R features KBC’s “One-Touch” release system that’s simple to use — simply pull and release each tab and the shield literally pops right out. Installing a new shield is equally as simple; line the shield in its top-most position and snap it into place. Cheekpad density is slightly firm initially, but breaks-in over time to provide what feels like a tailored fit to the individual’s face. Finer details like a chin curtain and a pull tab on the double D-ring strap closure to help facilitate helmet removal are also nice touches. Realize, too, that this is coming from someone who often criticized the company’s past models for one reason or another. Needless to say, I was skeptical from the start when evaluating this latest offering. But from the moment I took it out of the box my impressions started to shift. It was mentioned before, but its lightweight deserves repeating. Also impressive is its aerodynamic profile; cruising at highway speeds the helmet slices through the wind nicely, whether looking straight ahead or turned to the side. The chin curtain also does a good job of limiting the amount of turbulent air that comes up through the chin bar, which can potentially dry the eyes. When hanging off the side of the bike trying to clip an apex, being able to look up to the turn ahead is pretty important. Your mileage may vary, however, due to different head shapes and sizes. Ventilation from the VR4R consists of a total of five ports: an adjustable chinbar port, three across the forehead, and an integrated vent within the rear spoiler. Their mechanical operation is a step above models of yore, as each cover glides along effortlessly, but all told ventilation itself was one area that was lackluster — I couldn’t notice a difference with the vents open or closed. Its position on the D-ring isn’t fixed, nor is the D-ring itself fixed to the strap. This means that both items can shift when trying to cinch the helmet on your head, especially in a hurry. Pulling on the tab to try and loosen the straps for helmet removal often did nothing, so I had to resort to manually freeing the strap from the D-ring. If this is any indication of KBC’s future, then expect big things to come. For more information, visit. Although it wasn't this particular model, this is the only one I could find with images showing the area in question. In fact the whole black piece (containing the 3 rectangles) on the bottom of this attachment is one solid piece. So that said, can ANYONE explain to me exactly what the purpose is for this plastic attachment on the back of the helmet. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Dave In addition, increased negative air pressure improves exhaust performance to help ventilate the helmet. An exhaust vent to be exact. Still though, there's nothing on it to indicate that it is a vent, although like others, I just wasn't sure. And as heavy handed as I am, I was concerned about breaking it. That's actually why I posted this thread. There is also absolutely NOTHING in the owner's manual (what-so-ever) to explain how it works. The freaking owner's manual is WAY too generic, because it is the exact same owner's manual used with my KBC VR-2R. And the vents on the VR-2R are completely different. It's actually pretty simple though and when explained how the vent works by a customer service rep, it kind of makes you feel like a babbling idiot. Isn't that special. My friend had a KBC years ago with no complaints. Mladin went away from KBC and moved to Scorpion, that's probably about the time they dropped off my radar. I tried several times to start a thread here at esportbike.com with an IN-DEPTH review on my KBC VR-2R Alien purchased in late Aug. of 2009. That particular helmet model is considered KBC's flagship helmet and the same model which Maladin wore. To get the review to post I would have had to cut it so severely, it would have made the review incomplete in my opinion. And considering that I spent the better part of 8 months researching that model (or any KBC helmet for that matter prior to purchase) and finding VERY little review sources, I didn't want to compromise what I had to say in my review. And if this new KBC Magnum Mugello I've just purchased is ANYTHING like it's big brother (my VR-2R) it's going to be a damn good helmet. If you're considering a KBC helmet I think you'll find the review helpful. Please enter your desired user name, your email address and other required details in the form below. You should upgrade or use an alternative browser. The visor also fogs very easily on this helmet. KBC says the VR-2 has 'reduced shell size' which puts the chin dam very close to the mouth. This causes more breath to be sent up into the face shield. I would probably end up running into something since the visor fogs so badly at low speeds. At high speed visor is ok, but I've got to ride slow too. This helmet is part of KBC's 'Raceware' series and I cannot speak for how it performs on the track. But, for street use, I give it thumbs down. Camera distorts colors pictured below. I may go back to Shoei's RF-1000 after this one is done, but perhaps Scorpion USA will correct the flaws by then.I may go back to Shoei's RF-1000 after this one is done, but perhaps Scorpion USA will correct the flaws by then. Some reported it as being too breezy inside with vents closed. I got me Shoei back this morning and I'm happy See you on a ride How can you not love? I was very disappointed in KBC after going to San Jose Cycle Gear just to see that helmet, waist 3 days waiting for it and trying it out. I will never try out a KBC helmet again. For that cost, you'd think it would have a decently placed chin strap and not fog up on your first breath. I found myself not wanting to breathe in that helmet. Bonafide piece of crap. Bye bye KBC. The visor stays put in whatever position I open and close it in and the venting isn't great but does allow enough air flow so far. Granted, I've not used it in the heat of a Texas summer yet but so far, so good. I've had to reinsert the vent cover at the mouth and have read reviews that it's common for that piece to fail. Otherwise the covers and such are holding up well and it's a pretty decent looking helmet imho. Safety wise, I hope I never have to put it to the test and it is DOT certified of course but also ECE certed which I hear is a bit more strenuous than DOT but not as high as Snell rating. Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2013 I order this helmet to fit my big melon because all of the modern helmets seem to have changed their base design since my last KBC helmet purchase back in the late 90's. All new helmets won't fit over my head enough to get my head inside My KBC was only a 1XL and fit perfectly, but it's old and I can get shields for it anymore. So I needed a new one. Not one store in all of Seattle metro area had a helmet that I could even get on. Internet research found a couple of companies that made BIG sizes. I tried the Magnums, and they were too small, SO I tried this Vega Altura in 5XL, the biggest they make. I was able to get it on, and it was actually probably one size larger than I needed. A 4XL probably would have been just right. However, for whatever reason, they make the chin strap with a snap built into the strap near the end, I guess to cut down on flapping maybe. I absolutely hated that aspect of this helmet. It literally took me almost 5 minutes of messing with it witch cold hands to get it strapped on. With my Old helmet, less than 10 seconds. The finish seemed fine (gloss black). The venting was odd however, as it seemed to blow air into my right eye. This caused the chin section to rest on my chin which is not what you want. The internal padding had no real padding for the very top of my head which put my head against the hard Styrofoam inner shell. It did not hurt, but it needs padding there to protect from any impact. Essentially, it's a usable helmet, but I found the build quality and design to be below what I want, and that chin strap snap made it unusable for me. My search goes on. Please try again later. What got me is that it also pinched my ears uncomfortably. (I lost the genetic ear lottery - thanks Dad.) I had to try to get my finger up in the helmet to flatten my ears out - not the easiest thing to do. That was the killer and I returned it to Amazon. I have to post that with my current helmet, also a XX, my ears are not pinched or folded at all. The problem fitting my ears would be my only complaint.
