This is easy to debug even with just a voltmeter. Alternatively, a good electronics engineer should be able to sort it out. There are various nulls which can be adjusted in the unit, using an RS232-connected laptop running a VT100 terminal (Hyperterminal is usually used; Terraterm is a much better free terminal program). Bob Keep in mind that this is a basic airplane that operates at low speed and more often than not it is operated in VMC. The GFC700 does not add any additional functionality to the aircraft. It is better but it won't allow you to go faster, carry more or get there any safer. Both autopilots do the job. If all things were equal I would take the Garmin but things are never equal. The GFC700 comes at a substantial premium. I had both airplanes at the same time and I decided to keep the old steam gage 2002 model. They both do the same job. If you are having issues with altitude alerting it is possible that the alert is switched off or the calibration is off. This can be configured with a laptop plugged in to the port.
