When I cook every day, I use this mixer several times a week, if not every day.I have had no problem with bread dough and this machine. I use the capacity limits as stated in the book, and have had flawless results.I have an additional full size bowl, and the 3 quart bowl, as well as the snap-on plastic covers for the large bowls. I realize there are many KitchenAid mixers available now and in every color imaginable, but there is a timelessness to the K45SS, which dates back to production in the 1960s. If you run across this particular model at a modest price and it is in good to excellent shape, do not hesitate- get it and quickly learn for yourself what you and your kitchen have been missing. Mine is in bright white, by the way, not almond cream.A mixer is a mixer, right. That's what I thought too before my KitchenAid K45SS was given to me as a birthday present. What an amazing appliance. It works extremely well at all speeds and can make quick work of even the most difficult mixes. The basic unit comes with several attachments including a whisk, dough hook, and general mixer. I've found them to be pretty sufficient for most of my cooking and baking needs. I definetely recomend the splatter guard which you have to purchase seperately, but is well worth it given how splattering was a problem for me initially. If you have a large family and need to mix 3 loaves of bread at a time, go for one of the more powerful Kitchen Aids. The average family doesn't need that much power. You don't need any of the accessories - save your money. My Kitchen Aid still looks good and runs strong after twenty-six years. Keep in mind Kitchen Aid is owned by the same company that makes the Hobart commercial mixers that you will find in the major restaurants in the United States. All the Kitchen Aid models work using the same basic mechanical principles, some have a larger motor. This company has been using the same basic design for almost eighty years and no one has been able to improve upon it. When you think about it, that is amazing. The other top rated stand mixer accomplishes the job using a very semilar mechanical principle. However, it is made in England, cost more, and has some plastic parts. Now, with the power switch in the off position, as soon as I plug it in the motor starts turning. It operates on all speeds but will not turn off. I have not found any loose screws, the control plate spring is attached, the wiring has not changed. I searched this and other sites but have not found a solution.Before buying the part I would recommend disassembly first, and check the tightness of the screw holding the lever in place. If the screw isloose a simple fix is just to tighten the screw. This is what worked for us, and the 25 year old mixer now runs like new. I put some blue Lock Tite on the screw, hoping this will keep it from coming loose again. There is a small hole at the bottom of the speed control plate through which the end of the link speed should protrude as the speed control lever is advanced from the off position. My link speed was out of position and failed to break contact with the control plate. Once I placed the link speed where it needed to be the mixer turned off as it should have. It's powerful, easy to store. The attachments are great too. I love using it for making my own pastas, ice cream, making fresh juice in the mornings. Love love love it. I highly recommend this product. I have been told by other owners to be weary about the motor when using the dough hook attachment, as the dough can often cause the motor to wear out, so far I observed no signs of wear. It is easy to use and the tilt head is brilliant. I love how steady it is so both my hands are free to add in ingredients slowly. This is a wonderful appliance and absolutely worth it!
