A clogged air filter decreases the efficiency and life of the engine. With a damaged air filter, fine particles could enter the engine and cause rapid wear of the piston rings, cylinder and bearings. Never run the motorcycle without the air filter element installed. Replace the air filter element at service intervals specified in Table 1. CAUTION: Follow the service intervals specified in Table 1 with general use. Check the air filter more frequently when riding often in dusty areas, and replace it whenever the filter is contaminated with debris, regardless of the number of miles. Remove the air filter cover screws and cover (Figure 54). Carefully blow off any debris from the top of the filter to prevent it from falling into the air box when removing the air filter (Figure 55). Lift and remove the air filter (Figure 56) from the air box. Remove the engine block from the frame as described under Engine in this chapter. If complete disassembly is required, remove the lower crankcase and output shaft as described under Oil Pan, Lower Crankcase Half and Output Shaft in this chapter.
