I have a small watch collection and I wanted a real masculine aviator's style watch. However, though I possess a pilot's license, I'd be lying if I said I'd ever needed a watch to provide calculations. That said, I enjoy the accuracy of a radio-controlled watch. The lume is good and the sheer number of capabilities this watch has should warrant a review from anyone who wants a watch in the 'everything but the kitchen sink' category. There are a few caveats though. Number one.you should really think twice if you over the age of 45 and can't read small numbers very well (Either you'll squint like me or you'll buy a magnifier). The tiny booklet can be a little intimidating too as it is about a half-inch think and somewhat confusing in its arrangement. However, once you understand the underlying logic and layout, the book (and the watch) are much easy to deal with. Nice thing is, once you get the watch set.you're done. So, unlike other watches I own, my Eco Skyhawk sets and powers itself. Get past the learning curve and you have a cigar-smoking, tobacco-chewing real man's watch. This thing is big, busy and just oozes testosterone so if you're looking for a watch to wear to your next ballet recital, keep looking. Well, not true as the scratch in on the crystal and the calendar function does not work. So looks like I will be sending the watch to Citizen for repairs. From the United StatesI only had one problem with it: I bought it on the day before the switch to summer time, and chose the overnight synchronization mode CAL instead of RX-S. It failed to sync automatically. I was able to sort it out quickly, and the watch has synced successfully ever since. I think it is a fine watch. It shows up well in the dark, remains charged even though I wear long-sleeved shirts and sweaters (upstate NY is quite cold at this time of year), and it has lots of visual interest. It shows the day and date in CAL mode, which was a requirement of mine. I find the various modes of operation (timers, for example) difficult to use, but this will probably improve with practice. The slide rule is an amusing addition, but is too small to be of real practical use, and the scales are small enough to be hard to read (I am 67 years old). The bracelet has an excellent catch. The normal bracelet adjustment (by moving a pin up or down a row of holes) is not possible with this design, however, and I plan to invest in a gadget to help make it a hair longer. My wife's Eco-Drive has just recently begun showing signs of problems after purchasing it quite some years ago. I've had no problems with the two of mine. In the case of the Skyhawk, it shows few signs of wear and no scratches to the bezel even though it is warn daily. My biggest complaint is the thickness of the watch - considerably too much for buttoned sleeves on my dress shirts, but OK for casual wear. Living in Australia, I thought an atomic radio controlled watch was out of the question because we don't have any atomic time signals broadcast here. When I tried to research accuracy in watches I discovered the term used for an accurate watch is a chronometer and the most accurate watches in the world were made by Breitling, particularly their SuperQuartz models. A pilot here in Brisbane posted a great review about his Citizen Skyhawk AT and said his watch regularly picked up the Japanese time signal at night. As soon as I read his post, I bought one too and I haven't looked back. Pros: What I love most about this watch is that it's set and forget - being radio-controlled I never have to adjust the time, ever, period. And it has atomic accuracy - way more accurate than the Breitling SuperQuartz watches which still loose 15 seconds a year - at a fraction of the price. I have received many compliments on my watch from family and co-workers alike. The watch has a very attractive, large dial - more impressive even then in photos and pictures online. The stainless steel bracelet is very durable and some say heavy, but although I only have a small wrist I find the watch very comfortable to wear and do not feel inconvenienced by it in any way. The mineral glass is very strong and completely resistant to scratches - mind you, I work in an office so it's not in the way of harm very often but in the four years I've had it I haven't had a single scratch. I love the build quality of this watch - it is pure class. The solar powered battery works without requiring any full sunlight. Ambient light alone is enough to keep it running at full capacity. I love the beautiful presentation box it came in - it doubles as a nice stand for my watch at bedtime. The watch looks excellent and I have received numerous compliments while wearing it. I do have a couple of gripes that do not necessarily dis-satisfy me that much but I wanted to present them here should anyone from citizen gaze at these reviews. Issues: - The instructions are SEVERELY limiting. For a watch this complex, it would have been nice if citizen spent a little more time making the instructions more readable and user friendly. As another poster mentioned, they read like old VCR instructions. - The daylight savings time feature has a delay that actually gives you one full day of incorrect time before it catches up with itself. Even attempting to do a manual reset does nothing. - The controls could have been more usable. I think a lot of the watches functions are unnecessarily complex. - My watch seems to lack a few city names that are listed in the instructions. I read on a few websites that there is a known software glitch and you can mail in the watch to get the software updated. I have sent my watch back to Citizen via Kay Jewelers and I got my watch back within two weeks. So be advised if you have a Skyhawk JY0000-53E with a serial number that begins with a seven. I've been looking at the Citizen Skyhawks for the past few months and I finally bought one. I have always been using cheap watches all of my life, but lately I bought a nice Citizen Echo-drive ladies watch for my wife and she insisted that I upgrade as well. The Skyhawk A-T model JY0000-53E is a third generation Skyhawk with a radio reception transmitter that broadcasts up to three signals a day to correct the atomic time automatically or you can simply correct the time via an on-demand button that will correct the time instantly. One feature that I noticed that was lacking in previous Skyhawk models is the lack of the back-light for the LCD, but the new Skyhawk has an amber back-light for the LCD which appears to be a dim reddish-orange light. You can reference my photos above that shows the back light. In darkness the hands and number marks have a light illuminous glow. The watch is very heavy and it will take me some time to get use to it, but it is so attractive that I sometimes forget about the weight. I highly recommend that you try one on before buying. Actually, after a few days my wrist got accustomed to the weight of the watch. Sometimes I almost regret buying the older titanium versions because of the lighter weight, but I really like this newer despite heavier version. One thing I heard about the titanium version that discouraged me from buying it is that when the titanium surface (which has a dull grey appearance) gets scratched, the scratch shows as a very, shiny, metallic streak that is very visible and probably permanent. When you scratch a stainless bracelet, a jeweler shop can re-polish it. I agree with the other reviewer about the over-use of the crown button to perform most of the settings. As an Air Force transport aviator, Citizen Skyhawks has always been the go to watch for style, durability and accuracy on a low budget. Not to mention easy time zone changes and of course the slide rule. But the one thing the original lacked the most, from my point of view, was a back light. After I received the A-T, I never looked back. This watch has been with me all over the world. Multiple deployments, cold weather, hot weather, sandy conditions, water survival training, HALO jumps.still keeps ticking. Very low maintenance, set it and for get it.key for aviation. The Band has to be adjusted perfectly so it does slide around your wrist causing you to have to readjust it to read the time. The UTC clock is very small and seems to be covered by main hands when I want to look at it. It doesn't glow well for long at night so you need the backlight function after dark to read watch. I've had one of these for ten years and never needed a battery. Supposedly the watch will run without light for 4-6 months. The best electric watch on the market. Forget Seiko, the battery must be charged continuously and in bright light. Don't go near Invicta, it's junk, and the new ones were built wrong: the controls are on the wrong side of the bezel.
