Channels WhatUs Getting It Repaired Please read the NEXT PAGE for information about packing and contacts for this repair service (now offered by Michael Dranfield as SatCure no longer accepts repairs). Shows how to solder and describes what to check and measure. It won't make you an expert but, if you are capable of soldering in components supplied as a kit, it will take you one step further so you understand why you are doing it and even help you figure out other possible fault causes and cures. If you buy a kit you'll need this book. I guarantee you'll be delighted with this amazing book full of information. In fact not even a repair book. Written in simple terms, this book gives valuable advice on how to prevent failure. Read it NOW and save money in the future. But, if the worst happens, read it anyway because it will still save you money. Common problems and cures listed - many of which you can fix yourself with only the remote control handset or a soldering iron. Plus lots of general repair information including how to recognize various components. CPC, who were the stockists for Amstrad analogue receiver spares, don't seem to have anything. The DRX100 was made for Amstrad by the Samsung factory in Portugal and they denied having any spares. Service spares are presumably available only to whoever does Amstrad warranty repairs. SatCure can supply some Amstrad spares but you need to know what you want, and we probably can't advise. If it's not listed on our web site, send us an email stating the model number, board (PCB) number, component designation printed on the board and all details printed on the component itself. If all else fails, Michael can probably get a used part from a scrapped receiver. Tuner modules are available for the DRX100 on an exchange basis. Really, this is a workshop job, although plenty of DIY enthusiasts have been successful. Can I replace the tuner myself. In theory it is possible to do this in the DRX100 (but not other Amstrad models) but there is a risk that you might damage your receiver. If that happens then no reputable repairer would be interested in repairing it. Is that a rip off? I don't think so) Full information is given in my Repairing Sky Digital Receivers book Will the new tuner be reliable? Yes. We have been selling tuners since 2002 with no reports of failure so far. A DRX100 power supply Reliability Kit is available (Relkit 34) which contains the low ESR capacitors. Of course the DRX100 is an old, slow model so you might think twice about paying for a repair when so many used Digiboxes are available at low cost. All Digiboxes are somewhat prone to damage by power surges on both the mains 230v supply and the telephone connection (if you use it). We sell surge-protection adapters to minimise this problem (see our catalogue ). However, we have kits available should you need them). The later Amstrads have a more reliable tuner module which is integral with the mother board. The chip in the tuner does occasionally fail, according to Michael, but again this is rare. Some capacitors around the tuner circuit also fail. The power supplies are different from that used in the DRX100 (see pictures, below). You can order repair kits from page 12 of our on-line catalogue. How can you be certain if the PSU is faulty. Four methods:- 1. Visual inspection. The Electrolytic capacitors should have perfectly flat tops with no bulging (and no bulging of the rubber plug underneath each one). By the time any bulging occurs, the capacitor is well gone. If there's no visible sign, this does NOT mean that the capacitors are OK. 2. Borrow another identical Amstrad and swap its PSU over into yours. If it now works, that proves that your PSU is not OK. 3. Use an oscilloscope to monitor the individual output voltages. If you can see high frequency ripply of more than 100 millivolts, the capacitors need to be replaced. 4. Measure each electrolytic capacitor with an ESR meter (not a capacitance meter - this will not usually show a faulty capacitor). In our experience a very small number of Amstrad Sky Digibox PSUs start to fail after 12 months. The kit ought to be fitted before total failure happens. There are three versions of the power supply unit as shown in these photographs. You can order a Repair and reliability upgrade kit and solder in the parts yourself or you can remove the Power Supply Unit, pack it carefully in a cardboard box, and post it to Michael Dranfield for repair. Keep the screws in a safe place. Click HERE for Michael's repairs page. I've read a suggestion that we are forcing our kits on people, even though the kits are not required. Well, we don't work that way. Electrolytic capacitors DO have a limited life, which is determined by the air temperature inside the unit and the design characteristics of the capacitor relative to the stress that it's subjected to by the circuit. So if you replace the capacitors, the PSU should last longer and there should be less risk of it blowing any other components (which often happens when a capacitor fails). So you don't HAVE to buy a kit if you don't want to. But check the capacitors carefully. Likewise if the rubber bung underneath is starting to bulge out. Unfortunately, capacitors don't always give a warning like this and the best way to check them is with an ESR meter, which all professional workshops have. Use our RELKIT to fix it. Send this page address - CLICK HERE - to a friend. I received the Amstrad DRX100 this morning. I have just got home with the receiver and tested it. It works fine. Brilliant job done. I would recommend you to anyone I know who has the same fault with their receiver ( No satellite signal being received ). I think that you should advertise in some local papers. It was only by luck that I found you through the internet, but not everyone has the net yet. Many thanks p.s I am posting the cheque tomorrow morning. p.p.s I dont mind if you post this email on your website. Of course I was a little doubtful about sending my satellite to a total stranger, but I took the chance, and I am glad I did. He did a brilliant job and the speed of service was excellent. (Less than 1 week - Posted Saturday, received the following Friday morning). Now I can watch my satellite again. Brilliant service, 5 days door-to-door and happy children once again!! Cheque is on the way (you should be on commission from BSkyB for this service). I would have no problems recommending you to anyone with similar Sky-related problems. Please feel free to use this as a testimonial on your site if you so desire. I was pleased when I received it so soon, the information to install it was useful as well. I have tested it and it works a treat. I have a working unit back in place in under a week. BskyB quoted a two week wait just to get an engineer out when I originally enquired after the first sign of trouble. On top of that I would have been faced with a bill of around twice the amount you have charged. You even went to the trouble to adjust the RF output to the channel I had set before the repair. THANK YOU. Just in case this ends up on your website, I would like to state for the record that SatCure provides a fast, efficient and totally reliable service at a competitive price. It's a pleasure to do business with a genuine person that is only interested in giving you first class service without ripping you off. We have had a problem with the above digibox which we have had for 15 months. What my question is and it would sound dumb, why can't we just go out and buy a new digibox. After reading your FAQ page about who repairs digiboxes, it seems that BSkyB have the monopoly on repairs. I did phone up to Sky in Scotland and they could only wash their hands of the problem, saying that, since the box was ours it was up to us to sort the repair problem out, that they only dealt with the subscriber part. It doesn't seem fair that it is only Skycare that can repair our box. Can you shed any light on if the situation might change eventually. If we were, for instance to cancel our subscription and then take up a new one in a couple on months, could we then put in for a new digibox. Sorry if I sound confused (I am) Susan (Thanks for a very informative website) I can't really comment on subscription policy at BskyB - I'm only a lowly self-employed repairer. If you cancel your subscription you would still be listed on BskyB's database and, unless you moved house, BskyB would still recognise your postcode and know that you did have a Digibox. You'd have to change your name as well. Note that the BBC use the same database. You can, of course, buy a used Digibox then phone BskyB to re-authorise your smart card for that box. As for your DRX100, the most likely culprit is the tuner module. Best of luck with BskyB. When you (if) get your Digibox back in working order, be sure to write a letter (Special Delivery) to BskB asking politely for free viewing for however many months you were unable to use it. They will usually comply with a polite request but, if not, consult your local Trading Standards office. Please DO NOT send SatCure your receiver for repair. You should upgrade or use an alternative browser. Thomson Box Gone are the days when they were sold to just anyone.I was hopping of a more constructive answer as there must be a PDF of the circuit somewhere on the net. In my opinion there should be a service manual and a bag of components supplied with every sky hd box LOL My post IS constructive in that it will save you wasted time in searching. There is no PDF manual for the Thomson. The only one that exists is for the old Amstrad DRX100, but the two are not even similar. If i cant get a manual of the net then its the old fashioned way just trying to save time. Join the AVForums team live on Wednesdays at 7pm UK time. Stereo Fan 4.0 out of 5 stars I agree with all the positive comments made. It is compact, smart-looking and does the job. However as time goes on you discover features that are regrettably absent, despite it being a budget box. As it has no recording facility I use it in conjunction with a DVD recorder via the Scart connections. Like possibly all Sky boxes, it goes into auto standby if not used for 2 hours between 11.00pm and 4.00am (I believe) so if I am recording a programme in the early hours it is tough luck - I will miss it unless I set the alarm clock for some ungodly hour and get up to switch the box on. There is a procedure to override this on more advanced boxes but not this one. If this niggling aspect does not bother you then go for it. I really don't have any other criticisms. This box doesn't have wifi or recording functions.Excellent compact Sky HD box. Remote provided with batteries and power supply. I use this for freeview purposes and it has all the sky channels that are free to air. It has a HDMI connection, and a scart connection for older TVs. Purchased as a used box, and it works well.I would recommend King UK I chose from Amazon Marketplace as they were very competitive on pricing.Only niggle is that without a SKY card you cannot edit the given channels. It was first listed on the London Stock Exchange in April 1980. During the late 1980s, Amstrad had a substantial share of the PC market in the UK. Amstrad was once a FTSE 100 Index constituent but since 2007 is wholly owned by Sky UK. In 2010 Sky integrated Amstrad's satellite division as part of Sky so they could make their own set-top boxes in-house.Amstrad entered the market in the field of consumer electronics. During the 1970s they were at the forefront of low-priced hi-fi, TV and car stereo cassette technologies. Lower prices were achieved by injection moulding plastic hi-fi turntable covers, undercutting competitors who used the vacuum forming process.Their first electrical product was the Amstrad 8000 amplifier.Amstrad began marketing its own home computers in an attempt to capture the market from Commodore and Sinclair, with the Amstrad CPC range in 1984. The CPC 464 was launched in the UK, Ireland, France, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Spain and Italy. It was followed by the CPC 664 and CPC 6128 models. The Amsoft division of Amstrad was set up to provide in-house software and consumables. In 1988 Amstrad attempted to make the first affordable portable personal computer with the PPC512 and 640 models, introduced a year before the Macintosh Portable. They ran MS-DOS on an 8 MHz processor, and the built-in screen could emulate the Monochrome Display Adapter or Color Graphics Adapter.
