ampex ax-50 manualThey are the last units (I believe)that AMPEX themselves manufactured before turning that over to Teac in the 70's. I have a AX-300 that I need to refresh myself with and I future it'll be easy with th ebook. Also th eAX-50 was my spare deck and I'm trying to line one up for a guy I know. He supplied me parts for my '300 as well as my dual-capstan machines. Both AX models can be stellar performers, when properly set up. Last USA made Ampex machines were the 75x and 14xx series dual-capstan models. I had a 1455 built in 1972 which was just about the time Ampex Consumer Products Division factory closed its doors. According to Bev Gooch, who worked for Ampex from 1945 to 2000 and designed all their heads during that time (he has a huge collection of patents), the AX series was built in Japan by Hitachi, not Sharp. I thank you for your note about lubricants. I created Ampex Fan Group on Facebook (please feel free to join). The Hitachi decks were, in my opinion, the most unreliable consumer decks Ampex ever produced, surely Hitachi's fault not Ampex's. I used to have a lot of contact with John Warmack, who was the Parts Manager for consumer products. He sold the NOS parts he purchased from Ampex when they went out of the consumer business. He supplied parts for Ampi for decades, and he would even take them in for service. I have lost contact with him, so I am curious if he is the man you referred to. I hope not, but I fear perhaps it is him. A truly great guy who was such an asset to all Ampex fans. I may be able to scan in and upload the users manual, too. Time will tell. I had an AX-300 and had always assumed it was made by Revox because it was so heavily built, so learning that it was made by Sharp is a bit of a shocker because Sharp was a low-end brand in the USA. Consumer Electronics, If you follow any of those links and end up acquiring a manual, it will not be from us. We love our Vintage Audio and other built-to-last electronics equipment in an age of disposable products for a throw-away society. We might sell the kids before our classic silver Pioneer or Vintage Marantz, Kenwood and Sansui gear. If you also value High Quality Manuals that enhance the ownership satisfaction of your vintage audio treasures, you found the right place. (continued below.) It IS Our Guiding Principle Add Site to your Favorites Other sites we host: Phase Linear History Vintage Technics Database We sponsor two free Yahoo Audio Groups We are meticulous and give genuine best efforts to produce clean, well-constructed manuals for you. A side-by-side comparison of our reproduction manuals with those from many other vendors will usually reveal an overall better appearance, construction, and print quality. Sometimes strikingly so. Our Customer Comments page is a fraction of what we receive from real customers and electronics technicians. The vast majority of our printed reproduction manuals are Very Good to Excellent on our Guaranteed Quality Ratings scale. But every single item is not and we refuse to give a false impression that they are. We want you to see a detailed description and individually-assigned quality rating before you purchase. This time-consuming extra service is almost never provided by our competitors. Customer complaints are nearly zero, perhaps one per 500-1000 sales. We believe that virtually none of our competitors could truthfully make a similar claim. We are a USA based family business operating old-school style. That means real people trying to serve you as if we were a walk-in store in your local neighborhood. We always combine shipping on multiple-item orders and do not rip you off on shipping charges. Obscure service subjects that don't quite fit go in the Help and Do It Yourself subforum.Needs a good cleaning. Does anyone know how to remove the action lever (Rewind - Play - Pause - Fast Fwd). All the other controls just pulled up off their stems. The action lever doesn't want to budge. Should I be able to pry it up like the other controls.Sure don't want to wreck thid - at least in the first 24 hours. Also, any pointers to finding a service manual would be appreciated.I've read in other threads here that Ampex machines should only use Ampex lubricant. Any suggestions? thanks. Tom M.I think Hitachi actually made these. The motor may have oil ports.I had one of these, that I found at a thrift. Pretty hammered, but good heads, so I toyed with it, but wasn't too impressed. Your squeal could be the tape itself, or a rubber part in the drive slipping. Here's a video of the noise problem. The motor noise changes (increases) when I move control to Play. Notice how the noise gradually adds in a high pitch squeal. Both noises stop when I go back to Stop. Tapes actually play and record just fine.Rubber washer on the capstan shaft was causing it. After several hours of playing, the rubber wheel which goes between the 3-tier motor shaft and the capstan wheel, no longer makes good contact with the motor shaft. I have to slightly push it against the motor shaft, to get it to turn the capstan wheel. After all the cleaning, no good deed goes unpunished. I figure after 50 years that rubber wheel is a bit worn. Is there any work around, or fix, or adjustment, or even a replacement possibility? Thanks. Tom M.I checked old threads for comments on this deck, and I mention it's an idler drive, which is a rubber puck. It also sounds like it may have some alignment issues, what I'm hearing sounds purely physical. All of the linkages and idler shafts will need cleaned and lubed. Watching the deck in operation with panels off will give you the ability to see where the noise is coming from.Terry's rubber rollers can fix you up, however, if your rubber is firm, but not cracked, you can try scuffing it with a 3M type of green or red scuff pad. You can also see if you can put a slightly beefier spring in, to hold the idler tighter against the capstan drive wheel. There are no cracks on that puck at all, and it's certainly firm. But seems that if I roughen up the edge, it would just make the diameter of the puck smaller, and thus make the problem worse. I'll check for a weak spring. Tom M.Then it all works fine. Seems next step would be to find a stronger spring. Hope springs eternal (no pun intended). Tom M. Functionality may not be known or tested, unless specified in the listing. In April 1948 two 200As went to Jack Mullin for the Cosby Show and many of the others went to ABC to do tape delayed broadcasts. - Model 201 - As the result of progress made with the Ampex 300 in ealy 1949, Ampex decided to retrofit all the 200A's with the better electronics. This upgrade was released on June 15,1949. The remaining Ampex 200As were releasd as 201s. The news clips below detail some information regarding ABC and Capitol Records decisions to acquire the new technology. The Ampex 200-A we acquired was upgraded to stereo using Inovonics amps. We initially were going to restore the recorder to its original state. However after learning more about the history of the unit, we have decided to work to acquire the original electronics, but will leave the unit as is for now. This upgrade to the Ampex 201 specs involved the replacing of the original head cover and installing an Ampex 300 head cover and tape lifters. View the Capitol Records documents here. They also updated this Ampex 200A in 1954 and 1955. First 50 were delivered in May of 1949. Over 32,000 were sold and was available into the 1970's. This unit and its remote were restored by Phantom Productions in 2010. View movie - Win Media QuickTime It runs perfectly andHere's a photoThis was a result of the US Army requiring an American supplier of magnetic tape. Magnetic tape was a German invention and after the war, the German manufacturing ability was destroyed. At the same time, 3M was also spinning off its magnetic media division. Equitable Life Insurance acquired these combined entities, which became Quantegy, Inc., and later changed its name to the current Quantegy Recording Solutions, with the Ampex product line being the nominal survivor, although much use of the 3M technologies later found their way into Quantegy products including the high end GP9 tape. This event received substantial media attention. The only remaining manufacturers of new magnetic tape for sound recording are RMGI and ATR Magnetics. But as of 2012, no progress had been made. Most of the tape production facilities were sold or dismantled following the 2007 bankruptcy. Here is the almost identical unit in the Teac line called the A-7300. Ampex Data Brochure. Thanks PS my test tape is 185 nano-webbers per meter full trackI would not attempt this yourself - it is easy to actually mess it up and make a costly mistake. Then you can precisly do azimith, phase, playback, bias and record alignment. Once the proper settings for each type of tape type are done, write down the settings for reference. They should hold up for at least 6 months of 3 session per day schedules. Bias is especially important as all the recommended bias settings provided by the tape makers are wrong. I use a fast sweep 50 to 10k hz vs THD on the Audio Precision to optimize bias. Jim Williams Audio UpgradesYou DO need a test tape - if you need one I also sell those. And of course there can be things wrong with your 440 that WILL require a tech - if the heads are way off in zenith or wrap or height, if the transport is acting up and so on. But unless somebody's dicked around with it, you're likely going to be OK. So read my pages on aligning tape recorders, and if you really get confused email me and I'll try to help. The 185 nwbr test tape will be fine as long as it runs over the heads without sheeding or sticking. Since it is 185 nwbr it sounds like it might be old, but that might also mean that it is pre-sticking tape days. If it is old it could and probebly will have extensive high freq.A new tape isn't THAT expensive and it helps people like Jay McKnight keep MRL going. This is no small thing in itself. You won't be setting the deck up for 185 nwbr, but you can use that fluxivity as your reference and compensate in order to get a higher operating level. Using cal tapes of various fluxivity levels is published on Jay's MRL website. In fcat, the MRL website has a ton of calibratin tape info. Just Google Magnetic Reference Laboratories. Just stay away from messing with aligning the heads. If you feel really brave you might could do the AZIMUTH. I learned to do it when I was nineteen, but I was never really comforstable until I had a GOOD tape deck tech show me some tricks.I don't know why the other guy said it, but aligning an Ampex AG-440 (A, B or C) is not different than aligning any number of other analog tape decks. I learned on one in 1975. It is a pretty standard and straight forward deck to learn to do a cal on. The only thing that is even slightly different is how you switch the BIAS CAl switch around. Still, it is pretty far from being rocket surgery. You can do it if you have a manual. Just be thorough and make sure you understand what you doing and why at each step. Don't jump around (I don't mean physically) Do everything in the order that the manual explains. Be methodical and proceed step by step. If you go slow you can probebly wrap your brain arond what and why you are doing each process. Jim Williams is correct when he says that an Audio Precision test unit can do a better job. Still, it isn't all that neccesary. I have done alignments for years and years and I have never used an Audio Precision unit. Not that I would use one if I had one. The manufacturer's numbers are pretty close. I have sent tapes to about every mastering house of note and have had my work scrutinized by the major networks and I use the manufacturer's specs.Memorials, RIPs and Obituaries Grove Park, Maidenhead, Berkshire SL6 3LW.Hosted by Nimbus Hosting.I can get this to power on using the model 900 power supply and a Jones plug connector wire(not included) Paperwork and schematics are also included. It attains DOUBLE the performance in the metal-to-metal grind tests of other oils. And has incredible low and high-temperature characteristics, which is absolutely necessary for proper tape deck lubrication but completely lacking in petroleum-based oils. Don't use them on your Ampex tape machines any longer. Actual oils leave sticky deposits when the short-chain molecule components evaporate over time. Petro-oils vs. synthetics: Petroleum-based oils lack both the lubrication performance and oxidation stability of synthetics.. more Real oil is made up of a mixture of long and short chains of carbon and hydrogen atoms. And under certain conditions the short-chain molecules evaporate, and the unstable molecules oxidize and break down. This leaves a sticky residue which can actually“gum up” the device it was intending to lubricate.
