I personally found myself wondering why foxgloves are called foxgloves, and not mouse hats, or pixie thimbles, or almost anything else. Do foxes have fingers. Do fish, for that matter. This weather radio also should have been rechargeable. It's not, of course. The electricity scrambles up the power cord, goes into the white slab of the radio and then just disappears, instead of running around inside some rechargeable batteries. And it's very difficult to work out how the radio actually works. You have to turn on the weather service, then press some other switch on the side, then jump up and down, then read the first five pages of The Waste Land. The instruction book. Not helpful, really. Read The Waste Land instead. If you do get the white slab radio to work, be warned: the 'siren' (for 'tis what they call the screechy noise) is SUPER-DUPER LOUD. But this 'siren' is just TOO LOUD, and TOO JAGGED, and there's no way to turn it down. Mind's drifting off again. So all in all this is okay, but not great.I am glad I decided to ignore the negative reviews and trust my instincts instead. I am delighted with this radio. The setup was quick and intuitive. In short, the ZoneGuard Weather Radio is small, cheaper than most other weather radios, and seems to work well. It sits silently until an alert is issued. The only downside I can think of is it doesn't seem to be as sensitive as the old weather radio I used to have before it died. The old radio, made by a different manufacturer, would pick up three or four different weather stations, although some had static. (That old radio died so I purchased the ZoneGuard Weather Radio as a replacement.) The ZoneGuard Weather Radio only picks up one weather station where I live. We set this up with the ac adapter plugged into a surge protector, and we have the batteries installed too. The Good Stuff: The radio's volume and sound quality is excellent for Weather Band stations, and that is why we own this radio. The two wireless remote alarms work as advertised. They make plenty of noise in other rooms in the house. The alert on the radio itself is plenty loud. The colored lights work. We certainly care about the orange (watch) and red (warning). SAME wasn't too hard to enter (having looked up the code using the Internet). This is the first radio we've had with this feature. Most of the programming for enabling or disabling alerts finally made sense with a little trial and error. I'll be refining our settings in the near future. The plastic stand for holding the radio upright is easy to install. The not so great stuff: The digital display is awful. One has to pick up the radio or be looking straight at the display to read it. The more detailed (and important) manual for the radio has much too tiny print. Ridiculous. The color coded lights only flash for so long. Longer would be better. So far, this radio has done exactly what we require of such a device. MsWinston If you purchase this emergency radio be sure to purchase more AAA size batteries than you think you will need -- trust me, you will need them. Since there is no AC adapter feature (other than to charge it using your car battery) you cannot charge the radio in your home in anticipation of an emergency. I found myself in the position of having to use it as my primary radio for a couple of weeks as my old radio broke, and eventually I came to the realization that using it for more than 3-4 hours a day was costing me more than I anticipated. The reception was adequate for FM and the weather station, but I wasn't too pleased with AM reception -- I had to move it around the house to get clear reception. The 7 weather stations are preset and in a suburb of Minneapolis I can receive only one of them and the reception is good. The case is mostly plastic with a metal crank and flashlight. An all metal case would hold up better but since this is an emergency radio I won't be using it much. Pros. Flashlight is bright. USB port for recharging cell phone works great. Battery status indicator and battery holds charge well. Cons. Red emergency light is not very bright or useful. Anonymous247 I use this radio around the house when doing chores. I don't know how long the battery lasts when you crank it, but the triple A batteries last a while and it has a nice flashlight although not as bright as it could be. Overall a very nice radio and would be great in an emergency. I haven't used the battery charger for my phone but it comes with a usb cord to charge phones as well. Also love the crank so no batteries are necessary. My son love the fact that it has a flashlight so he can see when the lights go out. And of course it is great knowing that we always have a radio to listen to the weather when the storms have knocked out the electric. To charge your cell phone with a low battery, turn the crank for 10 minutes at 130 rpm to charge the cell phone enough to talk for about 5 minutes. This is an indication that the phone is receiving enough power from the radio. Continue to crank at this rate until you are satisfied that an appropriate level of charge has been received by your cell phone. If you decide to stop cranking for whatever reason, please wait at least 5 seconds before beginning to crank again. Not following these instructions may cause damage to your cell phone for which Eton disclaims any liability and will not be held liable for any actual or consequential damages related to this matter. Always turn down the volume before using earphones. If the alarm function is activated, the symbol “ “ will be on the display. When the alarm time is reached, the unit will beep. If the alarm function is deactivated, the alarm symbol “ “ will disappear. Press the buttons quickly to tune individual frequencies, hold to tune automatically to the next frequency. Pull up the telescopic antenna to hear FM frequencies. Turn up the volume and press the buttons to go through all 7 weather channels. WB and CH appear at the top of the display, with 1-7 next to CH. You’ll probably only hear one channel, but if you hear a weather broadcast on more than one, select the strongest. The strongest one will usually be your local weather station. Below are the frequencies that correspond to the radio’s channels: Try all of them and find the one that’s strongest; the strongest one is your weather station. The frequencies associated with them are: Press the button at the top of the radio. The ALERT light shines in the upper left corner of the radio. The audio will disappear, but the radio is still on, monitoring the NOAA Weather station until an alert appears. When it appears, you are alerted by a SIREN or a VOICE. Immediately press the WB button to hear the alert. If you receive such alerts, we suggest that you turn the ALERT feature off. In the radio off mode, press and hold the button, when “ALERT siren” or “ALERT voice” flashes, press the button or repeatedly with “ALERT ON” or “ALERT OFF” in the display. If you want to turn on the alert function, select “ALERT ON.” If you want to turn off the alart function, select “ALERT OFF”. FM radio performance is average, dosent catch weak signals. I would recommend this product for people who live in urban areas and suffer frequent power cuts.Thought it was a good idea to keep around in case of emergencies; well the use was finally needed; twice. We pulled these out When Hurricane Mathews came thru NC. The ability to wind it up and charge itself or other USB powered devices was invaluable and we found need to use it approximately 18 months ago when we had a small fender bender in upstate NY. A mode switch on the side allows you to choose between radio, flashlight or powering the USB charge port. However, be advised, in the description a photo of the Red Cross Torx is displayed which is a DIFFERENT emergency light: I own it as well and it is a good purpose built road emergency light, but it is a different set-up than this one, the Red Cross Rover. This is a good tool to keep in your vehicle as part of your roadside emergency kit. Bright flashlight, little worry over whether or not it will work when needed and nice to have to power small smart devices when they run out of charge. I'm quite sure it will last me many years to come:-)The LED flashlight is a plus. The cell phone charger might be great (there's a standard USB and a mini USB port protected by a rubber plug, so it certainly fits my phone's USB charging cord), but I have not tried charging my phone with it. In any event, I give this radio a solid 5 stars. Why? I bought it 2 and a half years ago. When I first got it, I cranked it up to make sure it worked, then tossed it in the closet. About a year later we were going on a car trip and so I tossed it in the back of the subaru next to the spare tire. At that time I cranked it and checked again to make sure it was working. It has been in the car since then (about a year and some months I guess)-- definetly it was out there during some of the hottest days and also more recently some of the coldest (Wisconsin, so I am talking110F and minus 10F). Today, I happened to pull it out of the back of the subaru and brought it in the house. I expected the battery would be dead. But as I was carrying it in, I happened to bump the switch and the radio came on. Then I checked the LED, which also worked. Mind you, I hadn't cranked it yet since whenever. So, pretty good, I'd say. Just for grins, I tried to get a NOAA weather station, and yup, that still works fine too. I have an old crank flashlight that has a different kind of bulb (xenon.Again, I have not tried the charger function. Like I said, I just wanted the weather band radio, but was pleased to get a lot more for the price.He absolutely LOVES it and actually uses it just to listen to the radio all the time because he's having so much fun with it (I may have to buy us a second one for legit camping trips:p) I can't go too much into detail because it stays with him, but I can say it is well made, employs beautiful design, and is efficient. He said he only cranked it for a few seconds as a test and was able to listen to the radio for some ungodly amount of time. Needless to say he is more than impressed with the crank-to-radio time ratio. I was leaning towards going with a cheaper crank radio because we don't have a lot of money, but quality is also extremely important to me. After pulling my hair out over the cheap models that didn't have the combination of features I wanted, the crank capacity, or just the quality I was hoping to provide in a gift, I finally accepted that you get what you pay for and this is a superior product.
