You will really want to get the gear that fits on the crank as well as the oiler itself. However, you will need to pull the old one off, so unless you have the tool, you will need to find a dealer that still has the tool. I don't have one, I just sacrifice the crank seal and heat the gear until it can come off(I also cool the crank to speed things up). I think the service bulletin came out in 1984 of 1985 with the change. The new style is a coarser gear. As far as meshing the plastic with the metal, as you push the oiler into place, it will turn to allow it to fit. The only way mesh will be a problem is for the above reason. A P500 oiler will work on the 490, but the same gear mesh problem may arise. Something to watch out for. I should have put a reserve on it as it was in Excellent condition.
