My main question is where does the filter material go or more specifically where does the primary filter pad or sponge go and where do the BIO balls go. Check to see if there is a slot of some kind the same size as the pad. The bioballs go in one of the trays, doesn't really matter which one. I do not have this filter but most canister filters work roughly the same. There are four trays in it, 3 have sponge-like filters in them and one is empty. 2 sponges are white and one is black. There is a bag of these white things that look like packing peanuts, and another bag that has lots of little black cylinders. The one with the black cylinders is in a bag that has a zipper and is made of some cloth. The other is in a disposable plastic bag. I don't know where these things go, if there is any order that the trays have to be in or whether or not to take the black cylinders out of the bag. Answer Save 4 Answers Relevance Stillwaters Lv 6 1 decade ago Favorite Answer I've not used Jebao filters but most canister filters are similar in general construction and filter materials, though when you get more experienced you'll tend to customise the filter media to your preference. First, let's look at all the filter media components: - white sponges: made of filter wool, used for mechanical filtration to trap small particles. Usually the first layer that the dirty water encounters, but some filters use it last. Ideally you should know which direction the water flows inside the filter so that you can position the appropriate media for optimal performance. If the water flow starts filtering from the top, then put the white sponge (one is enough, the other as spare when you next do a change) as the last thing on the top tray. The white sponge will be the most frequently replaced item though you don't need to replace it that often if you squeeze it out in tank water (never clean filter media using fresh tap water). - black sponge: this is activated carbon, used for chemical filtration to remove dissolved impurities. You can put it after the white sponge. But carbon must be replaced about every 2-3 weeks after its absorption capacity is maxed out. Since we can't tell when that occurs, just estimate. The carbon sponge is not very essential, suggest just use it for the initial 2 weeks after setup. - black cylinders in cloth bag: the cloth bag is a filter bag for easy handling of filter material, no need to remove. The cylinders and the packing peanut lookalikes should be some form of biological filtration media, usually rough to the touch. Considered by many to be the most important type of filtration and the main strength of canister filters. You don't need to replace such media, just a rinse in tank water if it gets too dirty, only at intervals of at least a few months. There are lots of possible combinations for your 4 trays. As the biological media are in filter bags, just shake it around to settle down in the tray and try to minimise leaving gaps. The inlet siphon end should be covered with a sieve like attachment, if you have dwarf shrimps or baby fish you may even need to cover the sieve with a small filter sponge or hairnet to prevent such small creatures being sucked in. The outlet end is usually a rainbar attachment, though not recommended for planted tanks if the water agitation is excessive. I personally prefer to also add a prefilter unit, to serve as additional mechanical filtration to trap even more particles. This means less chance for the main filter to get clogged up and lengthens the time to require maintenance. When your filter is established, you basically just need to keep up with regular water changes or top ups without messing with the filter for months. The pump has 5 power settings, and I have been running it on 3. My overflow plumbing is 1 inch PVC all the way down, with a flow rate from the tank rated at 750 gallons per hour. I can run the pump on 4 for a few hours at a time, but I'm not comfortable leaving the house with it on 4 because it gets really close to overrunning the overflow. I haven't tried 5 yet. The feed timer works as advertised and when the pump restarts or if you unplug it for maintenance and plug it back in it ramps up over several seconds, rather than just blasting full power right away and spitting and sputtering.I cannot in good faith recommend this brand to anyone anymore. The price is enticing but these are low quality pumps that simply do not last. Do yourself a favor, spend a little more and get a better brand like Eheim.
