Monitoring results from manual systems are generally less accurate than those from automated systems. Manual systems must be used at least once a month to monitor a site. This can only be done by a trained professional. Only an experienced contractor can properly design and construct an effective monitoring well system. Vapor monitoring requires the installation of monitoring wells within the tank backfill. Some state and local agencies have developed regulations for monitoring well placement. If you do not have a site assessment, you will need to have one conducted. A site assessment usually includes at least a determination of the groundwater level, background contamination, stored product type, and soil type. This assessment can only be done by a trained professional. When installed and operated according to the manufacturer's specifications and in accordance with the site assessment, vapor monitoring meets the federal release detection requirements. Vapor monitoring can also be used to detect leaks in piping. Operation of the vapor monitoring system at least once each month fulfills federal release detection requirements. USTs installed or replaced after April 11, 2016 may no longer use vapor monitoring as the primary method of release detection. USTs must be secondarily contained and use interstitial monitoring. In cases, particularly with large diameter thinner-walled pipe, for which the validity of this assumption may be in question, the selection of pipe and recommended installation conditions shall be determined by a qualified engineer. 1.1.2 Specific pipe characteristics and end-use requirements shall dictate addition to, or modification of the procedures stated or referenced herein. 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Specific precautionary statements are given in Sections 10 and 11. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee. Mark Wilkerson 5.0 out of 5 stars This book has twice the number of pages as the first edition and includes new information gained from his work on a major pipeline design. This is an essential book for pipe designers, geotechnical engineers and engineering geologists. The limit for allowable damage to the external surface away from the sealing surfaces is: For sandwich construction pipes up to a maximum of the solid skin thickness. The limit for allowable damage to the sealing surfaces of rubber ring jointed pressure pipes The trench bottom should be examined for irregularities and any hard projections removed. It should be not less than 200 mm wider than the outside diameter of the pipe irrespective of soil condition. If the trench is located, for instance, in a street or a narrow pathway and it is therefore impractical to widen the trench, support should be provided for the trench walls in the form of timber planks or other suitable shoring. At this point, a smaller trench may then be excavated in the bottom of the trench to accept the pipe. In either case do not exceed the maximum trench width at the top of the pipe unless allowance has been made for the increased load. The depth of the trench should be sufficient to prevent damage to the pipe when the anticipated loads are imposed upon it. The Table below provides recommendations for minimum cover. Where it is necessary to use lower covers, several options are available. Temporary steel plates may be used in the case of construction loads. Granular materials (gravel or sand) containing little or no fines, or specification graded materials, require less compactive effort, and are preferred. Sands containing fines, and clays are difficult to compact and should only be used where it can be demonstrated that appropriate compaction can be achieved. Absolute minimum underlay should be 75 mm. It may be necessary to provide a groove under each socket to ensure that even support along the pipe barrel is achieved. The side support materials must be carefully placed around the haunches of the pipes to ensure that the pipes are evenly supported. Care should be taken not to disturb the line or grade of the pipeline, where this is critical, by excessive tamping. This is best achieved when the soils are wet. If water flooding is used and extra soil has to be added to the original backfill, this should be done only when the flooded backfill is firm enough to walk on. When flooding the trench, care should be taken not to float the pipe. This represents an ideal structural environment for PVC pipes. PVC pipe, being lighter than most pipe materials, should be covered with sufficient overlay and backfill material to prevent inadvertent flotation and movement. A depth of cover over the pipe of 1.5 times the diameter is usually adequate. To avoid this possibility the preferred technique is to back-fill each length, at least partially, as laying proceeds. (It may be required to leave joints exposed for test and inspection.) Provided joints are made to the witness mark in the first instance, and contraction is taken up approximately evenly at each joint, there is no danger of loss of seal.
