install joomla 2.5 manuallyThe installation procedure for 2.5 is almost the same process it's always been, but we're going to note a new feature and use updated screen shots for you, so we have the most current installation tutorial available. If you already know how to do this, you can skip steps 1, 2, and 3. If you know how to do this skip steps 4 and 5. In the illustration above you see Filezilla being used to upload the complete package to the public html folder on the server. If you know how to use the command line on the server or putty you can use that to command the extraction. If you don't know what the command line is or how to use putty, just use the file manager. Check the documentation sent by your hosting company or contact them if you do not know how to get to your control panel. Somewhere on the page will be an icon or link for extraction. It may have a different label like inflate or uncompress depending on your server software. In the illustration above you see the cPanel file manager. As you create the databases, be sure to record. Be sure you remember it. Be sure you remember it. You will see the installation Language page. Choose the language if you need to and click next in the upper right hand corner. You'll have to correct those before you can go further. Most commercial servers are provisioned properly, but sometimes not. Godaddy allows you to install PHP4 when you set up your hosting. If PHP Version is 4, you should upgrade to 5. These are just recommendations and the site may still work fine. Joomla will still operate if you're settings are not quite right. Just click Next. Here is how to fill in the data if you need to: They would be the same as the ones you would use in Filezilla or any FTP client. Use this to fill in the FTP Root Path.Just leave it blank. You now have the option to set the site online or offline during this step. If you're preparing a production site, you probably will not want to install it since you'll just have to delete all the content after installation. You can't get to your actual front page until this folder is missing. That way if I decide I want to go back to the beginning I don't have to FTP everything again. I can just name the folder back to install and delete the configuration.php file and start over. Be sure to delete the installation folder when you are completely done and ready to publish. This would be unsafe to leave on a live site. Joomla stores most of its information within a MySQL database. Most hosting providers use Linux servers, and Apache is one of the most widely used web servers in Linux environments. Once you do that, you will be taken to the first screen of the Joomla. Web Installer. On the first step of the installation process, you need to add the necessary information about your site and your administrative username. Most templates will use this for the first heading of your index. It depends on your template if and where this text would be displayed. It will be used for password recovery and system messages. It may be confusing for many customers who would like to install a demo copy (Quickstart) of purchased template. Since quickstart is a demo copy it means that the package already includes Joomla so it's impossible to install Quickstart via Extension Manager as many customers try to do it in this way. Quickstart is the best solution to start working on the project, to be honestn it's very useful for advanced users as well - simply it saves time. Automatic Joomla installation is helpful for customers who would like to build their site from scratch, so you can install a template, extensions, configure everything - not advanced Joomla users may find it difficult. You can download either Joomla 2.5.1 or Joomla 1.5.25 at the time of writing this article. In our example, we will choose to download and install Joomla 1.5.25 (Joomla 1.7 and Joomla 2.5.1 will not work on some GoDaddy servers, we have written an addendum at the end of the article explaining why). The download should take about 10-15 seconds on a high speed connection. Take note of of the location of the newly downloaded file.First you need to login, and then you need to launch the Hosting Dashboard: But if you do this GoDaddy will create a random database name and will choose for you a Joomla version that you may or may not want. In this page, you will be able to create a new database. This will take you to the database creation form. It should be something like nameofyourjoomlawebsite. For example, if your website’s URL is mycheapbulbs.com, then fill in mycheapbulbs in the description. As we will later discover, the database description is the same as the database name.Assuming your domain name is mycheapbulbs, then choose mycheapbulbs as the username. Try to make the password 8-10 characters long. An example of a good password is: x4Lo0iqbUY. In this field, you need to re-enter the password that you have already entered above. In our example, it’ll be x4Lo0iqbUY. You will be redirected to the previous page, and you will see your newly created database, and next to it you will see Pending Setup (under Status ). Now you have to wait for a few minutes (GoDaddy seems to have a CRON job that runs every few minutes that creates all the databases). After a few minutes, you can refresh the page, and you will see that the Status has changed to Setup. Make sure that you have stored, in a safe place, the password entered above. Now while you are on the page titled MySQL (where you see the word Setup next to your database name), click on the pencil next to Setup. Clicking on the pencil will take you to a page where you’ll be able to find some important information about your database (that you will need later), which is the Host Name (which is something like p44mysql112.secureserver.net ), the Database Name (which is the same as the database description), and the User Name. Copy and paste this information in the same place where you have already stored the password for this database. You will need this information during the installation of Joomla. Now click on the arrow pointing to the right, and then your domain should be displayed under Domains to Add. Now click on OK (the yellow button on the bottom right of the popup form). You will be redirected back to the page that lists all your domains, and the Status of the your newly added domain will be Pending. Wait a few minutes. We are now ready to copy the Joomla files into our newly created domain. This will take you to an interface where you can manipulate your files and upload files to your website. In our example, we should click on mycheapbulbs.com. This will take us to an empty directory. Now we need to upload the Joomla folder there. Click on Open on the Windows popup browse menu, and then when you see the name of your Joomla zip file under Upload File(s) in the GoDaddy interface, click on Upload. The upload will take a minute or two depending on your Internet speed. You can see the progress of the upload on the middle right (below Overwrite files ). Once the upload is finished, you will see the message 1 of 1 files completed. We have now uploaded the Joomla zip file to our website, we now need to extract it. Leave the destination as is and just click on OK (the yellow button on the middle right of the screen). We have now finished copying the Joomla files on our GoDaddy hosting account. Our next step is to configure Joomla! Start by pointing your browser to and follow the below: Clicking on Next means that you have agreed to the license. (You will need to agree to the license in order to proceed with the installation) First enter the host name (which is something like p44mysql112.secureserver.net ), and then the database name, which is mycheapbulbs in our example, and then the password, and then the database name, which is also mycheapbulbs in our example. Once you’ve filled in all the information, click on Next on the top right. (If you see an error like Unable to connect to the database:Could not connect to MySQL, then you most likely have made a mistake somewhere. Click on Previous on the top left and re-enter the information.) You can now edit your website by going to and entering admin as username, and the password entered above as your password. Once you’re in edit mode you should search for this line: So open the installation folder, and then edit the index.php file, Search for this line: GoDaddy’s PHP version for these servers is much lower than the minimum requirements. The solution to this problem is to tell GoDaddy to move you to a more recent server, or to move to another hosting company altogether. I fixed, just like you suggested by commenting that line. That's our promise to you. We have served a lot of customers since 2001, and we'll be happy to serve you! You can use the following servers on your PC to develop your site.
