Ranger9 I bought this because my old standard-def MiniDV camcorder is on its last legs, but I wasn't sure there would be any advantage to switching to HD yet. I picked the Insignia over the similarly-spec'ed, similarly-priced Aiptek 720P model simply because its styling seemed a bit less cheap and the control layout was easy to understand. I picked it over the various Flip Video models because it uses removable SD card memory; with the Flip, once it's full, you have to stop shooting until you can go to a computer and snork the files off it. All I really expected to do with this low-buck camera was make simple how-to videos showing how to do various maintenance procedures on equipment we use at my job, so people could view them on their PCs. I figured I'd consider myself lucky if the Insignia produced barely usable video.http://dana1157.com/images/canon-d3300-manual.pdf I've been pleasantly surprised to see that if you set it up carefully, it produces much better results than that. First the bad: If what you want to do is shoot videos, then hook up your cam to an HDTV via the included HDMI out terminal and view them, you'll be disappointed in the Insignia -- the results are very grainy and noisy. But I think the noise problem is with the display circuit, not the actual video files, because when you view the files on a computer, they're much cleaner and smoother. I did a side-by-side test video to compare results from the insignia with those from my old Canon ZR20 camcorder, and was amazed at how much crisper and more detailed the Insignia video was, even when sampled down to SD resolution. White balance tends toward yellowish, but not drastically. The sound is thin and a bit crackly, but good enough for voices and narration. Clamp the camera to something solid via its tripod socket, put plenty of light on your scene, pre-set all the controls before you start shooting (it's almost impossible to change them while shooting without jiggling the camera) and you can wind up with some pretty impressive footage by web-video standards. The SD card slot is so deeply recessed that it's hard to push the card all the way in or release it; use the corner of the removable cover to push it. If you want to edit your videos instead of just play them, you'll need to export them to Mac QuickTime format, which is a slow process but gives excellent results. Using this little cam has made me a lot more confident about the benefits of HD. But I don't feel I need to rush into buying an expensive HD cam yet, because this one is producing great results for simple video projects. I would recommend this to a friend Helpful (5) Unhelpful (0) Report Comment littleman00 littleman00 Rating 3 out of 5 stars with 1 review Decent for the price Posted 11 years ago.For the price, this is a slightly above average camera that provides decent image quality in bright sunlight, but images appear 'flat' and color quality is so-so. In lowlight situations, like at a club or bar, this is terrible. The files are also very compressed, and when recording in HD mode, playback on an HDTV shows lots of pixelation, ghosting, artifacts, etc. The image stabilization is a joke; turned on, it makes the image 'stutter' slightly, and the still image mode takes blurry photos even with stabilization turned on. Files can be transferred via USB (or just take the SD card out and use a card reader), but be warned: if trying to view HD footage, your computer may require an additional download to view the files. This goes for both Mac and PC users. Expandable memory is nice since the built-in 64mb drive is almost nothing (about 2 minutes of HD video). From what I hear, this can support up to 8gb SDHC cards (around 3-4 hours of HD recording per card), and those cards are getting pretty cheap. Sound quality is surprisingly good, and there's a voice record mode, although I really don't see how useful it is since you have to go through a menu system to turn it on. I think it would've been better to hold down the power button with the unit closed to activate voice recording, since the mic is on top of the unit next to the power button. The unit also powers up and is ready to take video pretty quickly, considering its price range (from start up to record, about 5 seconds). The screen is also nice and large, and photos and video actually look really good on the screen (which is a bit deceiving, since the images don't look nearly as good on a TV screen). Overall, you get what you pay for. But, for budding filmmakers looking to get their feet wet in the HD scene, save your money and get a real camcorder. Posted 11 years ago. JB1414 This camera is exactly what I wanted and for the price you can't beat it. So I've been looking for something that can literally fit in my pocket, has nice video quality, and is cheap. I've used this a good bit in the last week and here the info I have to give. Video: Similar to some other reviews the video can be a little fuzzy when there isn't enough light, but that is only the case a small portion of the time for me. The videos I've shot have been good quality when the light level is decent and really good quality when there is lots of light. Outside shooting is nice. Zooming in and out is not as smooth as a normal camcorder, but it still does the job. Holding the device in your hand is pretty comfortable though your index finger might block the flash sometimes. The 3inch lcd screen is nice. Sound: The sound is good when you are in a 5 to 10 foot radius. Though I admit here the quality is not as good as a standard camcorder. Don't expect to pick up each and every sound of birds chirping or anything like that. In a few of the videos I shot the sound was fuzzy, but the majority have been just fine for the price. Not as good as a standard 5mp camera, but I bought this for its video recording. Thought being able to snap a picture is a nice feature. Battery: I did a test run to see how long the battery would last when shooting HD video. I fully charged the battery and shot video until it ran out of life. The video filmed for about 1hr and 45minutes before it stopped and needed to be charged again. For the size of the camera I think this is great battery life. In HD video mode I can get a little over 4hrs of recording and that time doubles if you drop out of HD mode. Also for pictures at the highest resolution it says I can get around 3500. So hopefully that will help in determining how much memory you want to buy. Features: There are not a ton of different features, though when looking at a simple point and shoot camcorder you don't need much in my book. The manual isn't very thick:). It kind of just enhances the surrounding light for pictures and video. Also there is a self timer and a multi-shot mode. The video has a stabilization feature too. Also uploading the video is very easy. Just plugged it into my laptop and downloaded it with no problem. Overall: So when looking for a new Camcorder I simply wanted the best bang for the buck and this is perfect. Very portable, good video, and enough feature for what I need. I hope this info helps. Eddorz I got this last week - my son bought it for me. Video quality looks OK in daylight - suffers in poor lighting (as many camcorders will). I read through previous reviews AFTERr trying the camera and found I had hit most of the problems others had hit - the supplied manual needs some improvementTake all the film off the lens and other parts of the camera (or picture quality will suffer). Only use the supplied charger - mine will NOT charge with other usb chargers or while connected to PC - Red light 'flashes' when charging - if it is NOT flashing you can leave it for hours and you are wasting your time. Finger easily covers front LED and sometimes the lens. Playing HD video back on a PC needs a special Codec (H.246) for HD playback - and even with the Codec will jump and loose sound-sync on slower PC's - this is a PC processor power problem, not a problem with the recording which plays fine on the camera. Video at lower definitions than HD plays fine on a PC. The focus method is 'primitive - 3 settings macro, close-up and distance - easy to leave the switch on the WRONG setting and get out of focus videos. You CAN zoom when recording - but NOT if you are using anti-shake. You need at least a 2gb or 4gb SDHC card (class 2 or 4). Have NOT yet found a way of editing the HD files. I will post more later - but at present I am Searching for Video Editing software which will work with the HD video files - ANY IDEAS. You need to be willing to 'experiment' if you buy this camera I would recommend this to a friend Helpful (4) Unhelpful (0) Report Comment John34209 John34209 Rating 5 out of 5 stars with 1 review Excellent value for the price Posted 11 years ago. John34209 Considering the low price, this camcorder does an acceptable job with videos and even provides a passable still image in a pinch. As with any similar device, you'll need to spend a little time getting used to the various buttons and functions. Once you do, you'll no doubt be very pleased with the video results on this inexpensive camcorder. I'll try not to repeat what they've said, but I do have a few observations. The Setup Guide that Insignia provides does not mention some very important items, some of which may have caused a few of the negative reviews. First, it doesn't detail the insertion of the battery. Not that it is difficult, in fact it's quite easy, but it can be installed backward if one isn't careful and I've seen reviews where people have experienced this problem and they couldn't get it to charge. The manual does show the correct battery insertion, but in my opinion, this should be in the Setup Guide. Also, it doesn't mention that while charging, the led flashes red and when it is fully charged the red light stops blinking and remains on. I also didn't see any mention of where to plug the charger in on the camera, although there really is only one place for it. Another very important item (or items) that isn't mentioned in the Setup Guide is the clear plastic protector over the lens. If you don't remove it, you'll definitely not be pleased with the images. Indeed, a few reviewers have mentioned this and I believe some of these camcorders are returned to Best Buy by customers not pleased with the images not knowing that the problem is resolved simply by removing the plastic film. The camcorder has 3 focus adjustments: normal, portrait, and macro. Essentially, normal has everything in focus from 5 feet away to infinity, portrait mode focuses on items between 3 to 7 feet away, and macro mode on an object just over 8 inches away (the manual doesn't say how much further than 8 inches remains in focus). If you do not have the correct setting, you will not get in focus images. I've read reviews that weren't pleased with the sharpness of videos and I'm willing to bet that some may be because they didn't check this setting. I mean, how can so many of us say the images are crisp and sharp and then one person says they are fuzzy. Sure, they may have gotten a bad unit, but maybe not. Same thing regarding people not happy with videos they've taken indoors. Lastly, as others have pointed out, don't forget that you'll need an SD memory card. The extras: MP3 player, digital still picture capability, voice recording may be important to some, but overall, the quality of the videos, once you get used to taking them, are surprisingly good for such a small unit. Hope this helps. I would recommend this to a friend Helpful (6) Unhelpful (0) Report Comment Anonymous Anonymous Rating 4 out of 5 stars with 1 review Great camera for online video sharing Posted 11 years ago. Anonymous This camera makes a great supplement to a traditional video camera: it's portable, it shoots HD video for YouTube and similar sites, and using an SD card means you don't have to worry about running out of space. FOR THE PRICE, it shoots some great video for quick sharing with family or for uploading to the web. This is NOT a professional camera or one for shooting major keepsakes like weddings; get a regular camcorder for that. If you want something better than your cell phone camera but is easy to carry around, this is the way to go. I thought the mic placement on top was kind of odd (as opposed to putting it on the front to point at a subject), but I suppose it's made that way for voice memo recording and it's handy if you're using the camera to interview somebody (so it captures both voices). Note, however, if you're a Mac user, this is NOT iMovie compatible out of the box (though both sales reps I spoke to thought that would be the case). It means an extra step, but it gets the job done. The included manual is useless, but with a little fiddling the controls are easy to figure out. Again, this is a supplemental or basic-use camera, not one for professional use or cherished events. Given that niche, it does its job well and you can't beat the price. CStarr728 I needed a small camcorder I did not want to spend much money on it just wanted something to record little videos of my kids. I already have a nice camcorder for when I feel like getting it out, but wanted something to easily carrying around in my purse and to have on hand all the time and this fit the catagory. I was reluctant about this one because it is not a major brand name and considered other factors of why I might want to get a different camcorder but when I read reviews on the other small pocket camcorders the reviews for this model beat out the competition. When I got to the store and saw the camcorder I was very impressed with how it looked and the feel it had to it, not to mention it has a HUGE 3.0 lcd screen whereas the other little pocket camcorders have a tiny 1-2 inch which makes a difference in being able to see. The good things in this camcorder is many to outweigh other ones:I did not know this until I purchased it that is a nice feature!!! Where can you find a mp3 player with a 3 inch lcd for the price of this camcorder? You can't!That was a big surprise to see that! The negative is slim to the positive for me:I give it 4 stars but its more like 4.5 only because of a few minor things is why it did not get a 5. I am not at all disappointed in this camcorder and very pleased with it. If you are looking to get a small camcorder and this is your price range this is the camcorder the others on the market don't even compare to this one. It does not come with the camcorder. The helpful starting guide is virtually useless. This camcorder is packed with features and options, but the buttons are multi-purpose, so there is a little bit of a learning curve as you read through the manual and try out the various buttons and pop-up menus that show up on the fairly large screen. In addition, you can keep the camcorder in night mode if you want to boost indoor light without using the flash. There is a warning within the manual that indicates that this LED light could cause eye damage if held too close to someone's eyes. NuffSaid I purchased this product just yesterday and tried it out last night. I thought it looked good and was inexpensive considering it records in HD.It's compact and lightweight.I don't care what people say about not expecting it to be like those expensive HD video cameras. If it says it records in HD, I expect it to record in HD, and it doesn't!It also has a kind of plastic rubbery coating that makes it feel even more cheap.I wouldn't recommend this to someone that is expecting it to do what it says, which is record in HD. No, I would not recommend this to a friend Helpful (0) Unhelpful (0) Report Comment Roo57 Roo57 Rating 4 out of 5 stars with 1 review Not Bad For The Price Posted 11 years ago. Roo57 Not a bad little camcorder for the price. Quality is decent, not high, not tack sharp, but then you don't expect that from a low end camcorder. As a photographer I know to use auto nothing. Forget it's auto settinds and use it's exposure compensation, white balance and sharpness controls. (Auto exposure is quite hot outside even on a cloudy day). It's very nosiy in low light, but that is what it's 'Night Setting' is for. Turn this on and you will get better video in low light conditions. Turn on Stabilization and Motion Detect. You have to be very very steady or use a tripod or else any motion blurs and becomes pixelated. When hand holding, shoot as you would with a camera with feet apart and arms tucked as close to your body as you can. When panning do it very slowly to avoid blur and jumpiness. You have to install it's driver in order to get the video's codec installed in order to play on your PC. This is a con - is a non-standard codec, and I have to convert clips before I can bring them into certain video editors. The internal memory doesn't hold much especially in HD, you'll want an SD Card. Battery life is decent. The menus I find awkward to use, wish they were more intuitive. Anyone used to using a DSLR still camera will find shooting via an LCD screen awkward. Wish it had a viewfinder. It's still image feature for me is not so hot. But then I use a DSLR and am used to high quality when it comes to photos. You have to be very careful when swinging the LCD screen open. I can see that it would be very easy to swing it the wrong way and break it off. You can punch up your videos using a Video Editor. For me that's half the fun. Eventually I will own a higher end camcorder, but for now when money is such an issue this little one does fine. While it certainly isn't cinema quality, what you get with this is decent for what you pay for it. EBecker Okay, so this camera really isn't going to be a solution for professionals. That said, for those of you out there who like to film videos of day-to-day life and post them on YouTube, document your family's parties, document silly things your friends do, this camera is great. An 8 Gig card gets about 4 hours of HD video. I use a more standard video format and get over 8 hours and the quality is very good. The videos look flawless on YouTube. Even dumped into iMovie or Windows Movie Maker, putting the videos together and burning a DVD or playing the video full screen, the pixelation, while present, is much less significant than I expected it would be, so this camera is even passable for making home movies for the purposes of archiving your family's goings-ons. I do wish the battery life were a bit longer as it didn't quite last me the entire day when I was filming with a friend in San Francisco. Needless to say, I now know the limitations of the battery and was able to get over 90 minutes of video, plus review time and a few photographs, onto the camera which I then was able to use to create a documentary of our day in the City. For most day-to-day applications, the battery life is adequate. Just be prepared if you are taking it on a trip to charge it up to full capacity if you plan to take it out for a long time. That said, this little camera is a must-have for anybody who loves to be able to document with film in an instant. College students, families on a budget looking to document their lives and their childrens' lives, young film students who need a tool to capture inspiration when it strikes, music artists who want to record their shows, teenagers who want a camcorder and have parents reluctant to shell out a lot of money for one or can't afford an expensive one themselves, or people who are like me and just like to have a lot of gadgety items that they use from day to day. Also, this product is an endorsement for continuing to develop and utilizing flash memory as a means for video recording. In over 90 minutes of video, I noticed only 5-10 seconds of artifact that didn't belong on the video, which occurred when I came out of a subway station. Other than that, the video was flawless. I would definitely consider purchasing another flash-based camcorder in the future based on my experience with this product. In conclusion, if you're looking for a decent camcorder but don't want to spend a lot of money, this camera is a great option. LunaticFridge I have had this camcorder for a few days and I love it. The price is low and the quality is good. Please don't confuse this for a replacement for a 1,000 dollar camera.Put it in your pocket or diaper bag or purse. Keep it on you at all times. In years to come you will cherish having video of moments that you would have never gotten because you hate to lug around a big camera. There are many reviewers that give it bad ratings because they simply don't read the instructions and say things about features it doesn't have but it really does. The video quality is pretty good. Please remember to take the plastic off of the lens. Your video quality will improve. Use night mode in low light situations. The still pictures are pretty good.
