We do recommend that you bury the wire or place it in a protective casing like a water hose but the system will work with the exposed and wire above ground. The boundary wire is buried so that it is not accidentally tripped over, cut, or damaged. Use care when using a lawn mower or weed trimmer or when digging near the boundary wire to prevent damage. In any case, this collar still hasn't needed to be recharged yet, and we've probably been using it almost two months now, maybe more. There are a couple other factors that might have made a difference in our battery life: 1)The climate here is cool and dry (Wyoming); 2) Our dog is very active but probably doesn't challenge the boundary very often - he learned very quickly to avoid the white flags (with just the tone and a few training sessions on leash) and we still have the white flags up and standard fence on most of perimeter - so the collar may not have to do very much. He actually comes eagerly to have it put on when I pick it up. And I'm pretty sure it does work; there have been one or two occasions when I've heard him barking (and presumably running for the front like he used to), then 'Yipe!', then he comes running inside to me for consolation - exactly what I want him to do. I was concerned that we might need something like a 'Stubborn Dog' collar for him, because he has a high pain threshold (50lb 3-yr-old Plott hound x lab), but this does the trick. BUCKLES - I've been happy so far with the new buckle system. He wrestles with our other dog, but not as much as they used to - maybe this would be more of a problem for dogs who wrestle more often. Also, we don't have much in the way of brush or other things for him to catch it on in the yard. We have not had much rain, snow, or muddy conditions since buying it. CONS - My only complaints with the collar itself are: 1) I wish there was an easier way to test it. The little tester that comes with it works, but the tone is very difficult (for me) to hear and light hard to see when walking around with collar in hand at dog-head-height and your head at. well. human head height three or four feet away. Also, the tester is very easy to lose! 2) There doesn't seem to be a way to adjust the correction level for the collar itself. The correction level and signal width can be adjusted for the whole fence system at the transmitter, but we have two very different dogs and I'd like to be able to adjust the correction level on the collars for each. 3) The light codes (signalling status, battery, etc.) are rather cryptic. The green one is intuitive enough to let me know that it's still on; beyond that, I'd have to look them up every time. I can't think of a better solution, though. TIPS from a first-timer: 1) Charge the battery COMPLETELY the first time, and then don't throw it back on the charger until you have to (especially the first few times). 2) Be careful of your transmitter placement. My fence transmitter itself will trigger a correction from the collar if it's too close (even with only twisted wire coming into it for the last 30 feet. It also emits a faint, high-pitched beep (not the alarm tone) that it similar to the correction tone on the collar - our dog definitely noticed it. 3) Test the perimeter and whole area thoroughly (with collar and tester in hand) several times. I discovered that our trampoline frame seems to act as a signal amplifier - it triggers a correction from the collar anywhere near one of the steel frame members. 4) Read the fence system instructions and watch the training video - they're actually quite good (lots of other good resources out there, too) - and take the time to train the dog, and test and mark the perimeter well. When I take the time to work with him on this, our once-difficult dog seems almost grateful for the clear boundaries and signals. He seems more relaxed and barks less; it's almost like the fence has relieved him of some of the (self-assigned) responsibility for guarding the property. These collars are expensive, although there is a reduced rate if you contact the manufacturer. They will replace in first year for free with receipt, after that there is a discounted price - turn around is typically 7-10 days so you need to be very watchful of your dog when they don't have a collar for this time. The newer collar design is also disappointing,while this does make it easy to remove (the push-click buckle) the traditional belt style alone works better for larger rough and tumble dogs. The unit still works fine, but I just like the original strap better. Had a metal buckle and was a much stronger plastic. The new collar is a stretchable material, which I would not trust. The original collars don't seem to go bad, but I will bet that the new ones will not last as well. The dogs respond well to the system, and once trained they know where they can and cannot go. They know that the warning beep means that they only have seconds to get back where they belong, before they get zapped. My big girl almost was nit with a bus, so this is definitely a more human way of keeping them safe than a chain. I just started leaving the collar on loose, so the unit was not actually touching them, and they were fine. HOWEVER. They are smart, so do not think that they will not test the system. We left the collar off a few weeks, and caught our pups roaming. I re-trained both of them and they are now again, fine. No roaming, no getting killed on the road. I lost a collar, so this was a replacement. These can be sent back to the manufacturer, since they are a lifetime replacement, for significantly less than purchasing them outright.
