how to manually install alpha centauriTo buy the games, visit GOG's Alpha Centauri page. Users who had purchased the solo game previously through GOG.com were entitled to the expansion for free. This version of the game is updated to the latest official patch, and might include some mysterious compatibility updates by GOG for modern windows. If you didn't have a GOG account before, it will be created. SMAC (among other free goodies!) should be there. Click on the game cover. You can copy it back to your applications folder after it is renamed. It's safe to say that is the most simple way of installing most of window's software in Ubuntu. And fortunately, PlayOnLinux has a database entry for GOG.com's version of SMAC.Once this is done, the standard GOG installer will prompt. Accept the agreement and follow the instructions. The new code supports smoother scrolling and zooming behaviour, more graceful window switching, and a number of useful overlays for the map, including territory maps, resource yield, raininess, rockiness, altitude and more.A fully patched game will very rarely crash and almost all the major bugs are fixed. It is safe to install these patches simultaneously. If you use old scenarios that require a custom alphax.txt this means that you may need to manually move the changes over. This will not be a concern for most users. Not using Yitzi's patch means that some newer scenarios and custom alphax.txt will not work for you.Replaces the original terranx.exe, alphax, txt and helpx.txt files. Compatible with PlotinusRedux's PRACX graphical patch and includes Guv'nor and GooglyBoogly's Datalinks Upgrades from version 3.4.SMAX version has only minor AI improvements and is superseded by Thinker and Yitzi's patch, SMAC has many but was a work in progress.Includes the fixes provided by scient's patch. Even though SMAX is the only supported binary, this patch includes SMAC-in-SMAX mod support to play a game as similar to SMAC as possible.http://hotel-sardinia-tartarugabianca.com/userfiles/hozelock-ac2-manual.xml

It is really hard to get used to the controls and menu. And about menu - open it to learn shortcuts, and then learn shortcuts. Yes, controls are less convenient than in CivBE for example, but there is much more of everything in Alpha Centauri. I recently found about this site and opened a new game thread, waiting for opponents. Very timely with the GOG sale. Always heard about these patches but this helped so much. What exactly do they fix. I don't really care about modding, so unless they fix some gamebreaking bugs I don't mind sticking with vanilla. I will point out that the Yitzi patch's fansite-host (which features an active community for hoary old SMAC users, even in this late age) has a sidebar poll about the version of SMAC one prefers in which the Yitzi patch is leading. FWIW, you'll also see that the unadorned GOG version for Windows is in second place. I think that means that the community is fine with either. I really really recommend PRACX, though. SMAC goes down so smooth now.http://www.wtmaa.net/userfiles/edic-401tr-manual.xml Have not tried to check if it's true. It was not working. Now with the patch it's working. Was not game breaking. But still nice to have. Another example are researches that remove maintenance from some facilities. Before maintenance costs were not removed, now they are. Movement of the units on the edge of the map could cause bugs - now it's fixed. My whole reaction to this thread was WTF is the OP talking about. GOG version of SMAC works just fine, on Windows 10. I'm aware of Yitzi, decided against playing it after reading some things in a SMAC forum. I'm curious to see how it looks and feels. When starting the game, I notice I don't have any progressive string music to accompany my planet configuring. Must have it, must have it. Gollum, gollum. Once I land on Planet, I don't have any factional background music either. That sucks, wonder what the problem is. I've got sound effects audio just fine, the menus and buttons go bleep and bloop and such. I've now uninstalled the whole game and reinstalled with just a straight GOG copy, and background music is just fine. So the Yitzi patch is messing up background music for some reason. I'll look at the various config files and see if I can find a reason for this. Well I'll be darned, the fix is trivial. Audio preferences had music set to OFF. I didn't notice this the 1st time I stared at those settings. I clicked it to ON and then saved my game. Problem solved. Surely, one of the bits in the Preferences or More Preferences in the.ini is set incorrectly, but I don't know which one. Fixing it from within the game is the path of least resistance. I also added the following to enable arbitrary resolutions on my Windows 10 laptop. Without it, on my widescreen things look squashed. Historically this has caused some playback problems for the Secret Project movies. All rights reserved Back to top. I'm trying this on Arch Linux, and for this I used the script provided by Kakise. I was under the incorrect impression I had mentioned this (probably lost it during some pre-posting edit). I'm sorry, that was key information. I know in Debian you can use alien to extract the contents of deb archives. So how can I get this bitch to install correctly? You may need a graphics patch for the game to run as it was intended, however. If you are the 1, please, for the love of Armok, don't put any useless shit like this in your sig. Hidden signature messages are fun! There were instructions for a manual install elsewhere. So I suppose problem solved. For anyone else having this problem. Putting the FX, voices and movies folder inside too will make it into a full install. You can do this for alien crossfire too so long as you put it in second. As it turned out uac would attempt to ask me if it was ok to install it but would get blocked(damn you microsoft) and just sit there. So I temp disabled UAC and it ran fine. It is much much worse than the original. It is much much worse than the original. I think the only real problem with it is that the two alien factions are unbalanced. Particularly those 16bit Win95 games that the newer versions of Windows don't support or simply don't run right. Lords of the Realm 2 is one example. It only runs at 640x480 and had a 16bit installer. I couldn't install it and if I used any work-arounds it would look like crap because it's stretched across my 16:9 monitor. Trust me, this is your best solution for retro-gaming on a modern computer. Plus you get some use out of those old licenses of Windows you likely have sitting around. Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it. Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center. Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on. It is much much worse than the original. Alternatively, install it for the enhaced aliens, but play with the old factions. (I agree, the new ones suck. The aliens were actually the least sucky of them, in fact) Until they don't.chingjin.com/userfiles/files/04-rxp-service-manual.pdf Not sucking is a product of time invested. You can choose which factions will show up in any given game, too, so you get to keep some new tech and landmarks without. That said they're well worth a single play-through for the novelty of an all-naval-base approach. We have to be. Lots of developers work with open source, but only a tiny fraction of those are good enough to get software that was designed for one platform to work on another one. We invented CrossOver software - a unique approach to cross-platform compatibility that does not require dual-boot or another OS license. And we launched ExecMode to help organizations solve really ugly technical challenges. You accept the use of cookies or other identifiers by clicking the Acknowledge button. Kyrub's patch improves the AI. Yitzi's patches work only with SMAX, so won't be useful for you. I suggest that you install the patches listed in the first paragraph of this post and make sure that your game runs correctly. You can then decide whther you want to install kyrub's patch. Additional discussion of these patches may be found here. Hope this helps. My cpu is an Athlon II X2 2 although I suspect that won't be the problem. Help please! Are you running just SMAC (the original game) and not SMAX (the expansion pack). If so, then you appear to have installed the correct patches in the correct order. It's possible to eliminate the CPU not supported error by editing the ini file. However, scient's patch is supposed to suppress that message altogether, suggesting to me that something went wrong during the patching. The first thing I would check is that you installed the correct version of scient's patch. He created different patches for SMAC (terran.exe) and SMAX (terranx.exe). If you installed terranx.exe, then you wouldn't be running his patch for SMAC and you would get exactly the error message that you described.I am only running SMAC and only installed the terran.exe patch so it sounds as though I have done something else wrong in the install. Is there an obvious crash or error that I would have seen if I hadn't patched to v.4? If that is not it, I assume I will have to uninstall and start over again (if my disc still works, of course). Any other suggestions gratefully received! Is that correct?dss-cctv.com/ckfinder/userfiles/files/como-plantar-sorgo-manual.pdfI think the problem must be that I haven't installed the 4.0 patch properly. The individual files all show a last modified date in 1999, which is probably too early for 4.0 but I'm struggling to see what I've done wrong. As far as I can see 4.0 overwrites the existing files when it is unzipped and I've done this three times but the game still shows v.1.01i.The game does play if I launch it from the desktop shortcut, which is something, although it still shows v.1.01i.However, The default installation folder for SMAC is C:\Program Files (x86) \Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. When I run terran.exe from the partial installation in the Program Files folder, I see exactly the same behavior that you described. Try running smacp4.exe again, but change the path to Program Files (x86).Definitely above and beyond the call.I haven't checked the SMAX version yet. Thanks for your time. When ron from wine console, nothing is printed, and nothing occurs Use it at your own risk This is the log file from the crash: I tried deducing what the issue is, but came to not conclusion. Figured that I'd post here in case anyone else is having the same problem. Here's the log: Thanks for the script, petch. Runs well. I have tried several times to patch the thing, but to no avail. I have tried to follow the instructions here and met with no success. Has anybody gotten the game to work. I have no knowlege of tech talk, save to a VERY minor degree. Can anybody help me? Thanks, But I already did. I am looking for some plain talk type of tutorial that will walk me through the steps, including how to change a directory from root to mine. As I said in the first post in this thread, I am a NOOB and as such I need a gratuitous bit of hand holding through this. Being fifty years old doesn't help much, since I cannot soak up the knowledge as I did when I was eighteen, or even at thirty. So I guess I am an OLD NOOB which is worse then a general NOOB:p. Mike Now I don't feel so out of place. But what I was referring to by the changing of root to mine was the permissions. According to one tutorial, I have to change the permission of a directory to play the game since the Loki installer seems to install as root. I also still need to find a plain language tutorial for fixing Alpha Centauri Planet pack so I can play it. I am an old Sid Meier's fan(atic) and want to play my favorite games in my favorite OS. If you know of any such tutorials for a total NOOB then please post the link here, or give me the directions. Not to mention Civ 3, Gettysburg, and a few others. I have managed to get Pharaoh, and Caesar 3 running, with sound.I just started using Ubuntu a few months ago, so.:p 'sudo' and your user password gives you administrative previlegies. BTW, being old does not mean you can't still soak up new knowledge, not ever.I just started using Ubuntu a few months ago, so.:p 'sudo' and your user password gives you administrative previlegies. BTW, being old does not mean you can't still soak up new knowledge, not ever. What I find boggleing is the fact that I cannot run the patch. At the one tutorial site they gave a link to download the latest patch (supposedly on filefront) and when I click on it I get a file not found. Google has not been able to help me, and Loki is gone. So unless I can find a patch that does work, I am SOL. And what I meant by saying that being old, and knowledge, is that it is harder to learn something. At least for me. When I bring up a terminal and try to pull up a file and directory listing, my fingers seem to type 'dir' even though I know that it should be 'ls'. I spent too much time in the old dos shell days, I guess:D. But yeah, I know how to list files, move them, copy them, remove them, and all that. I am no novice to a shell. It's just that I spent too much in a DOS shell, and now I have to break old habits. Not to mention, with dos there was never this much control. It takes a bit to get used to it, that and a lot of hand holding through the process. Mike Let us know what you don't understand. I just got it working on my computer about a week ago using this set of instructions, plus a minor edit to the install script to account for my 64 bit processor, so I can vouch for that particular set of instructions. Will do, Tarvok. I am going to fight to keep this OS, just as hard as I fought to config Bill Gates 'Brain-Dead' Child 'Winblows'. Mike Edit: Do yiou know a valid link to a valid copy of the patch for the game. The patch link on the site that MDxm provided is giving me a no file or directory found message, Mike I'm using dir all the time, since I'm not too keen on coloured filenames.I think the easiest way to run some of these games would be virtualising windows 95 or 98, if you have an old copy lying around. All links to any of the copies of smac-6.0a-x86.run or smac-6.0b-x86.run seem to have vanished off the face of the earth. If anybody has a stray copy floating around on your HD please could you email it to me, or upload it to a file hold place where I can download it. Found out that my cats got a hold of my smac planet pack cd and had fun with it on the floor. They seem to love those giant shiney hockey pucks. Luckily, I also found an iso image of the game so no foul there. Now I am just waiting on the patch. It took me a while to work out myself, but I finally got it working on my machine. Install the whole game, of course. Exit when setup is complete. Create Launchers that point to those scripts. All rights reserved. You should upgrade or use an alternative browser. If so, please post here and describe which version of SMAC or SMAX you used (original release, Planetary Pack, Laptop collection, Sold-out Software, GOG or something else) and which, if any unofficial patches (scient, Yitzi, Kyrub, something else) you had installed. If you tried to run SMACX on Windows 10, but weren't able to do so, please provide the same information as requested above. I recently read that older games (such as most versions of SMACX) that use DRM might be causing problems with Windows 10. Several gamers have had problems running the game on Windows 10. If the problem is widespread, the future of SMACX looks bleak unless we can find a workaround. Please post here if you need help finding such a patch. In this thread on AC2, Lxndr stated that the game ran for him under GOG (which has no copy protection), but didn't run under the PRACX mod. The PRACX mod makes many changes to the graphics interface. I suspect that some of these changes aren't compatible with Windows 10.I created an ISO and installed the game on the Lenovo. The best way to handle it is find someone with WinXP 32-bit, install it, copy the directory to a flash drive, and then copy them back to your x64 machine (SMAC doesn't need any registry keys, oddly enough). I noticed that the fonts in many dialogue boxes are either the wrong font or the wrong size (maybe both, couldn't tell) and certain orders that produce a click tone for confirmation cause that tone to be played repeatedly for the rest of the turn, you can stop the clicks by toggling the SFX volume slider. In SMAC (without expansion) sounds don't seem to work at all, videos don't work in either game. Also, you should post information like this to the AppDB, not the forums. Chip Also of possible interest, I was using v1.0 of the unofficial patch by scient, available here. However, I don't suspect that made a difference. Also of possible interest, I was using v1.0 of the unofficial patch by scient, available here (. If I get round to more thorough testing I'll add a version and some more notes to the appDB.They tend to 'age' and are not kept up to date causing problems. If this is a patch from the software producer, that would be fine but please annotate this such. Thank you. James McKenzie The rights for the game are disputed as well, meaning future support is doubly unlikely. So I don't think the unofficial patch will age any more than an official patch would. I still haven't done any meaningful tests of the game running in wine (started one game, played a multiplayer turn), so I didn't want to put anything in the appDB about it. We want you !
