Stop the Squeak and Tighten Up If you have noticed a squeak coming from your Hemnes Ikea bed, you are not alone. In fact, this is a common problem with all Ikea beds. The first time you assemble them they seem snug and tight, but after a year or two of sleeping (and other bedroom activities), the joints start to loosen, and so begins the dreaded squeak. Every time you turn over or reposition yourself, you hear it. It keeps you up. It alienates your sleeping partners. Eventually, you are too embarrassed to bring anyone to your bed, so you die alone. Do not despair! Your saving grace could be as simple as tightening a few bolts. You see, most beds loosen up over time, and tightening the four corner bolts on a Hemnes bed can bring them back into line. You have probably tried this already, but if not, it is the place to start. Target the bolts closest to where your squeak is, but it also make sense to tighten the whole bed. Sometimes you might hear a squeak in one place, but the looseness is elsewhere in the bed frame. Try Lube Squeaks come from two sources, movement and friction. Step one tries to reduce the first. By tightening, you reduce the amount the bed can move. By lubricating, you reduce the amount of friction the that can cause the squeak. Apply WD-40 or other lubricants anywhere you have to pieces coming together, including places where wood is rubbing on wood. I recommend the WD-40 No Mess Pen, since you are working in a tight place and don't need much. Use this pen to get into all the corners and joints. In fact, combining this step with the first allows you better access to all of the places you need to get. Try Glue This is not a solution if you plan on moving. It means that the bed will be stuck together and much more difficult to disassemble when you need to. This is a solution for those who do not plan on moving and do not care if the bed frame makes it out alive. Start by loosening the bolts. There is no need to take the bed completely apart as long as you can work some wood glue between the abutting pieces. Do not glue the nuts and bolts themselves. It know it is tempting, but this will prevent you from ever easily taking the bed apart again. Once you have worked wood glue into all the crevices and joints, give it a few hours to dry and see if the squeak remains. Still Squeaking? New Frame or New Mattress If you've tried the other steps and you still haven't eradicated the squeak, take heart. It's not your fault. It's Ikea's fault. Always remember that. At this point, you might consider two options beyond the bedframe itself. This is thinking outside the bedframe. First, consider scrapping the bed altogether and starting over with a low-cost bed frame from Amazon. It can be put together in far less time than anything from Ikea. It is made of iron, and it is virtually silent. This one frame also fits any size bed, so you could keep it even though you might change mattress size later. It may even be possible to construct this frame inside a Hemnes bed frame and have the best of both worlds. I have not personally tried this, but it might work. If you are still committed to the Hemnes bed, however, you have another option. Consider buying a new mattress that does not pass movement well. Most foam mattresses will absorb most of the movement that is causing your squeak. A Casper mattress, for example, does not pass on much movement to the frame. That is up to you.
