The Hoover floor cleaner has a 3-speed brushroll with different settings for normal cleaning, gentle cleaning, and spill pickup. Getting to the water tanks is very easy and the dirty one is simple to clean. I like that it can be used on carpeting as well as hard floor. I zipped from the living room to the kitchen getting them both cleaned at once. I have yet to use the attachments but expect I'll be just as pleased with them. I got about a week ago. I used the upholstery attachment for the first time yesterday. Did a great job. I have nothing but high praise for this cleaner. It is easy to use, easy to clean up. There are videos on you tube if you can't understand the instructions in the manual. I am a visual person, so the videos helped me a lot. I would highly recommend this cleaner. Is a great cleaner for the price. One pass pretty much does and and then five or so to vacuum it up. I recommend this product. It makes your carpet look brand new. This is smaller than my last but that's good because it gets into tighter areas. It sucks very good making dry time shorter. The attachment on the front is so awesome. It has its own spinning bristles and cleans furniture great. I didn't think it would go from bare floors to carpets, but it does a terrific job with that, so I can go from my kitchen floor to the living room thick carpet without having to change any settings. I have a couple of fringed throw rugs that it would probably destroy because it has such powerful suction, so I just shake them out or use the hose attachment on them. I love all of the attachments, too. I was ashamed to show my husband how much dirt was in our carpets that I ha d been missing. I filled the dirt chamber for each floor (3).http://www.drupalitalia.org/node/68372 I used to have to get my husband to carry the old one upstairs for me. Verisign. Unimportant features These did not really impact our experience using the cleaners: Number of scrubbing tools or cleaning attachments: All carpet and upholstery cleaners come with at least one cleaning tool, but some have two or even three different-sized attachments for cleaning stairs or hard-to-reach corners. We’ve found that they all work well and that it’s not worth sweating how many come in the kit. Cleaning formula: Every cleaner we’ve come across comes with an 8-ounce bottle of cleaning formula, which should be enough to fill a standard-sized cleaning tank (with water) twice. If you pull your carpet cleaner out of the closet only a few times a year, that trial-size bottle will easily last a year or two. We can’t say one way or another which brand has the best cleaning formula, but it probably makes more sense to worry whether or not your carpet or upholstery is equipped to handle water-based cleaning solutions. Power rating: You’d think that a high-powered motor would translate to better vacuum suction, but we haven’t found that to be the case. The top performers we’ve tested run at 4 or 5 amps, while one of the worst performers had a super-loud motor that ran at 10 amps. That’s ample length for pretty much any situation. With that much cord you can easily snake it around your car until it gets tangled. We tested one cordless model—the only we could find. It worked surprisingly well but it had dreadful owner reviews, most of them complaining about leakage. Heating element: Some cleaners have a “keep warm” function that keeps the cleaning solution hot for more effective cleaning. Whatever the drop in temperature is in a regular extraction machine, it doesn’t appear to affect cleaning performance—especially not within the 30-minute window that most people use these things for. Wheels: It’s a nice add-on if you’d rather not carry a 13-pound cleaning machine, but for most people wheels will only add bulk and weight to something that’s light enough to pick up easily. Water tank capacity: The more solution you can fit in the machine the better, but given that these machines are mostly meant for spot treatments, even a small tank of 35 ounces is enough. Don’t sweat the size. How we tested We stained an area rug with egg batter, dye, red wine, and grease and tested how well each cleaner removed the stains. Photo: Liam McCabe We performed a fairly straightforward series of stain tests with each of the seven contenders. We also did some basic handling and usability tests, but the most important question we were trying to answer was how good these things were at actually removing stains. We bought three surfaces to test on: a cream-colored area rug, two cotton seat cushions, and a swatch of gray auto upholstery. We then stained each surface with splotches of bacon grease, red wine, egg batter, black pen ink, and indigo denim dye. They were meant to reflect a range of common household stains, as well as the four main stain classifications—oil, tannin, protein, and dye. We made eight rows with all five of these stains on each of the test surfaces—one set for each of the seven cleaners, plus a control set that we didn’t touch and used for visual comparison. Once we finished applying the stains, we ran each machine over one half of each stain splotch to show, in a clear visual that we could photograph, how well it performed. We didn’t use any gadgets to precisely measure how much wine or egg batter was removed from each surface. We just used our eyes. We also favored the machines that were able to completely remove the stains—because what’s the point of a carpet and upholstery cleaner if it can only partially clean a typical stain. After testing their performance we did some basic handling and usability tests. We looked at how easily we could pack and store each machine—if it had holders for the cords, hoses, and attachments. We looked at how easy it was to fill the solution tank and clean the dirty tank. Finally, we did a basic noise test to see if any of the machines were unusually loud. Back in 2016, when we first published this guide, we did a similar round of tests, including a couple of these same extraction cleaners (one of which was the SpotClean Pro) and a handful of steam cleaners. We used old couch cushions and a white shag rug, and chocolate syrup, red wine, and coffee for our stains. Our current tests do a better job of representing common surfaces and stains. Our pick: Bissell SpotClean Pro 3624 Photo: Liam McCabe Our pick Bissell SpotClean Pro 3624 The best carpet and upholstery spot cleaner This extraction cleaner pulls stains up better than everything else we tried. It was far and away the top performer in our tests, capable of completely lifting dried-on bacon grease, red wine, egg batter, black pen ink, and indigo denim dye from a cream-colored area rug. It’s also pretty easy to set up, and includes a removable lid on the dirty tank that allows you to reach in and scrub the tank clean by hand—the only one we tested that allowed such easy access for cleaning. The SpotClean Pro has been our favorite spot cleaner since we first published this guide in 2016. A few Wirecutter staff members have been using it since then and have plenty of positive things to say about its performance. The SpotClean Pro was the only machine capable of completely removing any of the stains on the cream-colored area rug—and it did so to all of the stains. We were surprised by how well the SpotClean Pro performed—not just in our most recent round of tests, but also back in 2016 when we first tested it against a bunch of steam cleaners on a shag rug and some old couch cushions. This year we thought it might be more of an even match, because we brought in a lot more extraction cleaners than last time. But it was still an obvious winner. Just look at the video below: Perhaps along with the SpotBot Pet, it was the only machine capable of completely removing any of the stains on the cream-colored area rug—and it did so to all of the stains. It performed nearly as well on the auto upholstery swatch, leaving only a few faint traces of the stains. The seat cushion test was less impressive, as the machine wasn’t able to completely remove any of the dried-on stains. But that was our toughest test, and we think that the SpotClean Pro still performed better there than any other model. It’s so effective that we were able to almost completely clean all of the other stains that other models left behind on one of our test rugs. Although the rug didn’t exactly reach resale quality, considering how tough those stains were it looked pretty darn good—much more like Neapolitan ice cream than a saturated triptych of the worst stains that you could imagine. The SpotClean Pro completely removed dried-on stains from an area rug. Video: Liam McCabe Because the SpotClean Pro’s top temperature is limited to whatever comes out of your hot-water tap, you run little risk of damaging fabric—and little risk of burning yourself. We still recommend checking out those cleaning codes on your rugs and upholstery before using any cleaning device, because some types of upholstery are not meant to be used with cleaning solvents. But that’s the case with any extraction machine. The dirty tank can be easily removed for cleaning. Video: Liam McCabe We liked how easy it was to set up the SpotClean Pro for cleaning and to clean the machine afterward. Unlike with a few other machines that we tested, the solution tank can be balanced on a surface, which allows you to fill the tank without having to hold it in one hand with the formula in the other. The dirty tank has a large lid that you can remove for cleaning by hand—a simple but convenient design feature that was lacking in every other machine we tested. The SpotClean Pro comes with an 8-ounce bottle of cleaning formula and two attachments—one for stairs and corners and one for “tough stains.” As far as we could tell, the only difference between them was the width of the scrubbing tool. All but our also-great pick included just one attachment head. The tank is among the biggest we’ve seen (.It also features a longer 5-foot hose that wraps around the side of the device, and a power cord that is a garage-friendly 22 feet. The whole thing is small enough to store in a closet, which I’ve been doing since I first tested it in 2016, and it’s light enough (about 13 pounds) for pretty much anyone to carry from spot to spot as needed. Flaws but not dealbreakers We noticed a few pain points with the SpotClean Pro, probably the biggest being the single level line on the clean tank. Spot cleaners are used infrequently enough that you should be able to load just a small amount of solution for a spot treatment. But if you go by the single level line on the solution tank you have to completely fill it before each use. That also means measuring out the required 2 ounces of formula—and the SpotClean Pro doesn’t come equipped with any kind of measuring device. Most people will probably just leave the solution in the tank after each use, but that may build up soap scum in the long run and prematurely age the machine. You could probably just eyeball your measurements and be fine, but a better workaround would be if Bissell had simply added a second, lower level line for filling a smaller amount of solution. The SpotClean Pro was the second noisiest cleaner we tested. We recorded a little over 84 decibels (dBA) at full blast from a distance of 4 feet.
