I'd used the old model with great success as a concordance and thesaurus. The newer NIV-570 works well for a single verse, but is far inferior for checking the use of a word throughout the Bible. It will move from one entry to the next up to a point, then it's as if the gadget needs a rest. Worse, it will tell you chapter and verse, but not what book you're in. And the buttons are not especially easy to push, so after awhile I get fatigued. I suspect I will increasingly go back to using my old book-type concordance; but I miss the NIV-20 sorely. Thus it has lost one of its most useful features. Also, footnotes are odd -- or perhaps it's the instructions, which say that the footnotes are not part of the text of NIV but added to bring clarity for archaic words. But really, there are no archaic words in the NIV. I suspect the instructions from the KJV got hastily and badly edited for uses with this edition.) Otherwise, the NIV-570 outfit is fairly easy to figure out, even for me as someone not great with e-gadgets. (It's worth reading the directions, though these are not always well written). The designers are no doubt proud that they have made it much smaller. For me, this just makes it harder to handle and easier to misplace. I gave it three stars because I imagine others will find it to their liking. But actually this may be too kind.Anywhere you are, you can always access the words of God and enjoy reading without having to take a large bible with you.It is easer to read and follow. I also like the way it returns to the same verse when first turned on. A good buy for the money.I asked the seller but did not get a reply.http://www.drupalitalia.org/node/67664It gives me more encouragement to read the bible as it's handy and very convenient to take with you. I would recommend to every Christian especially those who can't bring the book and yet you can just slid it in your pocket. The manufacturer's quality is also superb as its sturdy. Praise God for having this kind of invention to meet people's demand. In Christ, Sergio Y. Tablico Ocala, FloridaPraise God!!!He loves this!I just love it. I can also read it while waiting in the doctor's office or anywhere I must wait. Very convenient. The only improvement is that the new one is smaller, otherwise it is slow, with with clumsy software and relatively insensitive keys.He says it is particularly useful when reading books that have multiple references to refer to throughout the text. It is a great deal easier than flicking through a bible, as all that is needed is to type in a reference.A very efficient service. This is a very useful tool for looking up Bible references quickly. Ease of use: Five minutes with the manual will give you the basics. Extras: Clock, address book, calculator. Why? Franklin BIB-475 Electronic Bible Price: ?129.99 (Not available until 2009) Speed: Psalm 23 in 12 seconds Aesthetics: It’s shaped to look like a plastic book, which isn’t a good look, but the text is much better, and the screen can display about 60 words. Ease of use: Not much more complicated than the older version. Extras: As above, plus currency converter. Rather more usefully, it has the Holman Bible Dictionary. I visited a church recently where the children sat at the back playing on computer games; so an electronic Bible could be misconstrued. For anyone with a broadband connection, the internet can do what these gizmos do — and more — for free. Complete King James Version on DVD, read by Alexander Scourby (Hendrickson, 2 discs) Price: ?14.99 Speed: Psalm 23 in 43 seconds Aesthetics: It’s not much to look at, but it is delicious to listen to. Ease of use: As long as you can use a DVD remote control, it couldn’t be simpler. Extras: Photos of biblical sites with music. Neither does the narrator. Ease of use: It’s straightforward, but skipping through tracks to find a particular chapter is a bit of a pain. Extras: An introduction to each book. NASB Audio Bible, on MP3, read by Stephen Johnston (Hendrickson, 3 discs) Price: ?16.http://slowjamsundays.com/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/1626c462acbd47---cambridge-audio-340a-se-manual.pdf99 Speed: Psalm 23 in 14 seconds Aesthetics: To my ear, Stephen Johnston’s reading voice is absurdly mannered. Ease of use: No problem. The readings vary, but are often excellent. Joss Ackland, for example, brings gravitas to Genesis. Extras: None. As for the DVD format, I don’t see why you would want to read the text on screen while listening to it; whereas for CDs, 45-60 discs for the whole Bible seems rather a handful. For me, the best solution is the Scourby AV on 3 discs of MP3s, which can be played on most CD players these days as well as MP3 players. Aesthetics: Better than the competition. It’s clean, it’s in a decent font, and you can make the text whatever size you want. There is an advert at the foot of the page. Ease of use: If you’re at home on the internet, it’s simple. Type a text reference into Google, and it will take you straight there. (Other Bible sites come up on other search engines.) Extras: You can choose to hear it read aloud professionally. Another click gives you Matthew Henry’s commentary on it. BibleGateway’s main competitor, Crosswalk.com, has a better range of translations, but the text is swamped with adverts.
