Dial in normally, but stop on your last combo number. Then, jiggle the handle up and down (kinda hard), then ball your hand in a fist and hit right below the dial hard, without hurting yourself. The buttons have a much less positive click when you press them and I find myself often failing to open it on the first try. The piston has definitely weakened. It used to almost spring open on its own. That was very nice if I needed to open it one handed from bed. Now I have to manually lift it all the way up. My biggest complaint with this safe is it is less secure than it seems. With its heavy 10ga steel it feels strong but there are obvious weak points. A firm hit upwards with a hammer on the front of the lip I'm confident would snap this retention piece right off allowing it to open. Second, the hinge is an obvious weakness. It is a relatively thin piano style hinge EXTERNALLY mounted that would take about 20 seconds with a grinder or 5 minutes with hacksaw to cut through. I understand this isn't designed to foil a determined burglar for hours on end but there is no point in making the safe from 10ga steel if the hinge is exposed and much thinner. All in all it works fine but I feel like I paid for a lot of extra steel that does nothing to increase security. There are other boxes half the price that would work equally well.The locking mechanism works reliably and appears to be tamper proof. From my inspection it looks like Fort Knox has addressed this issue. See the attached image. They no longer extrude to such a dramatic degree. The included instructions on changing the code are easy to understand. There is a second layer of foam underneath for even more storage. When opening the lid a bit of force is required to work against the piston. After the lid is open the piston keeps it open until you close it, which takes a bit of force also. It's similar to the idea of closing the trunk of you car, only not as difficult. I feel safe having this safe with children in the house. There are no youtube videos of a 3 year old opening the safe with a paper clip as with other products.I also like that it's completely mechanical and tactile, meaning you could open the safe in pitch black. It's also easy to reset the combination. When i measured the space the safe was to fit into, I didn't take this into account, so I'm going to need to sand it down a bit so that the lid can open and shut freely. The interior foam is firm enough to keep whatever is placed there from moving around, while being soft enough that it won't mar any finishes. I also really like the 4 holes drilled in the base, if you bought some screws and washers this safe could be anchored very nicely. Interior-wise this safe easily can swallow up a Glock 34 with a Surefire X400 attached and an extra magazine, so any size 1911 or standard frame revolver would be fine. It's probably too small for a Desert Eagle or an extra large framed revolver, but I can't imagine anyone wanting to keep a firearm like that at their bedside unless bear attacks are a thing. One note on security - the combinations are not endless and could be guessed given enough time, so I would not use this as a replacement for a real safe. I would also recommend that you change the combination at regular intervals, especially if you have children in the house. Speaking of that, while this safe is great for preventing access from children or household members, it is not meant to prevent theft. Given a crowbar and 20 minutes you could easily break the safe open, so again, this is not a replacement for a real safe. The best use case for this is next to your bed, for quick emergency access, at which this excels.I wanted something I could place on my nightstand for fast access but still have it be very secure, use no batteries, fast to access, and this fit the bill. I was also able to use four screws (purchased separately) to mount it to my nightstand through pre-drilled holes in the bottom. It includes instructions for how to reprogram the simplex lock were easy enough to follow. Once you practice you can open the safe very fast, a few seconds at most. I like the fact it's mechanical so no batteries to ever replace. The walls of this safe are thick metal and the paint job and finish is nice. An important point to remember is that there are usually two index lines on a dial ring. The one at the twelve o’clock position is used in dialing open the lock. The mark at the eleven o’clock position (if present) is used only for changing the combination. While performing any procedure involving dialing numbers into the lock, it is important to view the dial and ring straight on. This helps ensure the number you are entering will be aligned directly under the index mark. If you dial past the intended number even slightly, begin the entire dialing procedure again. Some resistance should be felt as the mark representing “5” comes under the opening index, and the dial should reach a positive stop near “95.” During the dialing process, it is normal to feel more resistance each time the dial is turned a complete revolution. Each turn of the dial engages another part of the mechanism, creating more resistance to dialing. This assures that you have a highly tested and secure lock. You can even secure this handgun safe in a car or in your bedroom. It is also large enough that your iPad can fit inside with attached Smartcover. You can set your own combination easily. You can even punch in your combination without even looking at the unit, giving you quick access to your handgun in an emergency. Easy to create your own combination. Quick to open. Since it is small, it can be moved easily, so I anchored mine 1. with a bolt on a shelf and 2. with a cable and a padlock for under the seat in the car. It would take a thief a while to break into it, and he would have to have some good tools and know what he was doing. I don't know how I would break into one. There is a smaller size than this one which I use for the car. It will hold a small revolver and cartridges. While Fort Knox mainly specializes in full size custom safes and vaults, they have also branched out and created some of my personal favorite pistol boxes. These pistol safes all have quite a few features in common, and their main differences come down to the size and shape of the container. Here are all the things that each safe has in common. This way you can decide which is the best fit for you and your situation. This is a top opening and just like all the rest of the pistol boxes, it has the Simplex lock on it. This safe mainly would be great to be used for being bolted in or on a night stand, or kept in a car or camper. Due to its heft, it really isn’t meant to be a portable safe, but rather a heavy duty pistol safe. If you want something lighter that you can take with you wherever your go, there are much better options out there. This safe basically is for those that can’t use the PB1. I previously mentioned that the original wouldn’t be great to fit under a car seat, or under a bed. However this Personal Pistol Box fixes that issue. With its front opening door, it can lay flat into a confined space and easily be opened. That said, it wouldn’t be great in a drawer, as you couldn’t access the inside of the unit. It also isn’t as easy to access in a pinch because of the smaller door opening. It is mainly meant to be used in vehicles. It is almost exactly like the Personal Safe PB4, however it is just 6 inches shorter in length than that one. The reason for the drop in size, is so that it can easily fit into most vehicles. It maintains the front facing door. This is mainly because there really isn’t anything else on the market like it. It carries all the same great features of the other boxes, but lengthens it out to 45” in length. This allows for shotguns or other long guns to be kept in it. This would be great for the back of SUVs or Trucks, as well as under the bed. It might even be a great option for being in a closet, but you would definitely want to make sure you can pull the firearm out of the top and still have room up above. Instead it is meant to sit inside of the safe, and be a safe within a safe.
