In a gear change system there is sometimes a rod attached to the gear handle which runs straight down and is attached to the brake pedal arm. At the end of this rod is a lever, near the brake pedal arm. There is a cable that runs from the firewall to the Focus Ford linkage. When the driver moves the gear stick the linkage system pulls or pushes on the cable. The same process happens on the transmission linkage and changes the gear. Some gear linkage systems work in a similar way but don’t use the rod. Instead the movement of the gear handle creates the necessary pressure on the cable. This may be accompanied by a grinding or crunching noise when attempting to change gears. This is often caused by the ball joint part of the linkage wearing and popping out of its socket. This will need to be replaced before improvement will be seen. Please try again.Ford: 1 models, 44 variants between 2008 and 2011. The In-Store Pickup option will now be defaulted at checkout. I tried to just move the shifter into any gear and none would work neither would reverse. I put the car in neutral and pushed it up the drive and today I took a closer look. I don’t know much about cars but I have been researching all day and found nothing. I didn’t know if the car (2004 Focus) had hydraulic, cable, or rod system but I don’t see a master cylinder so I’m pretty sure it’s not that. The clutch pedal feels like it’s normal self and the car runs and doesn’t start without the car being in neutral and clutch disengaged so I don’t think it’s the clutch safety switch. When I try to move the shifter it seems like it has a full range of motion but if I put it forward into the 1,3,5 gear areas I can still sweep it side to side. It has me really confused. I took the sleeve off the shifter to check if in fact the shifter does have full range of motion and based on the lubricant markings it seems so. I know this is a long shot but I hope someone has an idea since I can’t moved it to take to a mechanic. Sorry for the double post but I guess you have to write a long title to make mods happy here 10 comments share save hide report 70 Upvoted This thread is archived New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast Sort by best The shifter would flop around even when I thought it was in gear, and then stopped going into a few gears before it went out. It was a pretty inexpensive fix. Its the same fluid as your Master cylinder fluid and its very common for Foci to leak from the Master, your Master is located directly behind your clutch pedal, should be green. I had mine replaced recently but not for the same kind of issue, just was adding fluid every 3-4 days bc of leaking. Remove the intake air box and you should see them. Replaced the transmission fluid and clutch fluid. Fixed it. Forgot that was a thing. The fluid was completely black and disgusting. Give that a shot. If you encounter the problem I had which was i couldn't get into any gear, felt like there was something blocking it. All rights reserved Back to top. Most times, the car must be turned off to shift into reverse. We had the problem in 2013 and took the car to the Ford dealer. The dealer stated that the linkage was set wrong at the factory. They set the linkage and that worked for a couple of winters. Now, the problem is back with the exact same symptoms. We took the car back to the dealer. They said the linkage was OK, but they found a small leak in a hydraulic hose. They can't explain why that could be the cause of the shifting problem and my impression is that they do not really think it is the cause of the shifting problem. The dealer said that if the hose problem correction does not fix the shifting problem, they may have to drop and inspect the transmission. At this point, they are fixing the most obvious problem (the small leak) before moving to the next and very expensive possibility. Our gamble will be that they find a problem in the transmission that is covered by the power train warranty or they do not find a warrantied problem (or no problem) and we are stuck with a big charge. Getting rid of the car is certainly a consideration. The car is a nice car otherwise. Anybody who lives in a warmer climate want to buy a Ford Focus???:-) Can you share what the solution was if you have found it yet. Shifting is fine in warmer temps. ( January 2014 ) ( Learn how and when to remove this template message ) The SVT also featured a reworked version of the 2.0-liter Zetec engine available in other Focus models. Developed in concert with Cosworth, this engine featured a special aluminum cylinder head with enlarged intake ports, high compression pistons and forged connecting rods, piston oil squirters, solenoid operated variable camshaft timing on the intake cam, dual stage intake manifold, and a 4-2-1 tubular exhaust header.Getrag provided a six-speed manual transmission shared with the Mini Cooper S. This transmission was a twin layshaft design and included a dual mass flywheel to eliminate vibration and transmission noise. Other changes to complete the package included sharper steering through an increased boost ratio in the steering rack, larger disc brakes on all four corners, and stiffened suspension with a slightly larger rear anti-roll bar.Options included a powered glass sunroof, seven-speaker Audiophile sound system with 8-inch (200 mm) sub-woofer, a cold weather package with heated seats, traction control, a 115 V block heater, heated side mirrors and, for 2003 and 2004 models, HID xenon headlamps. It included all available options plus full leather Recaro seats and fifteen-spoke dark argent colored wheels. The exterior was available in two new colors, Screamin' Yellow and Competition Orange. The only option the five-door did not include were the sideskirts. In 2004, its final year of production, the Euro package was available in the five-door model as well. Also the five-spoke wheels were no longer available and a 6 spoke design was the replacement. The 2005 ST used dampers and stabilizer bars similar to those of the SVT, but significantly softer springs. The ST featured a unique interior, 16-inch (410 mm) wheels with Pirelli P6 Four Seasons tires, spoiler, color-keyed fascia, a color keyed grille, and four-wheel anti-lock disk brakes. For the 2006 and 2007 ST's the suspension geometry was changed to provide a softer ride. The Focus ST name did return in 2012 in an all new model.Upgrades included: High-flow aluminium cylinder head; Variable valve timing; Dual stage intake manifold; Stainless steel exhaust system and exhaust manifold by Cosworth; Sports catalytic converter; Larger brake discs (300 mm front, 280 mm rear); Getrag 6-speed manual M6 gearbox; Revised power steering 'falling-flow' pump and close ratio steering rack. Black Oak engine management system. The engine was sourced from the Ford of Mexico Chihuahua plant. The vehicle final-assembly was in the Ford Saarlouis plant in Germany, with some content such as the subwoofer assembled off-line at the ACU facility attached to the plant.Production was limited to 4501 units only. The car was largely built on its own assembly line in Ford's Saarlouis plant, with some additional specialist off-line assembly performed by the ACU group at Uberhern. It would also allow 1.0G of braking force due to the standard Brembo braking system 324 mm (Front) 280 mm (Rear).Originally it was to be released as the Racing Focus, however after the poor selling Racing Puma, Ford (driven by Martin Leach) decided to revive the RS badge.Mechanically, most notably, the car incorporated a Quaife automatic torque biasing differential to improve traction from the front-wheel drive setup. The steering used a similar quick-ratio rack as the ST170 while the brakes used fixed-caliper, four-piston Brembo units with 324 mm (12.8 in) discs at the front and single-piston floating calipers and 280 mm (11.0 in) discs at the back. The engine was heavily modified with forged aluminium pistons, hardened valve seats, sodium -filled exhaust valves, stainless steel exhaust system. The forced induction system comprised a Garrett turbocharger with a water-cooled charge air cooler and an electric water pump. To transmit the higher torque an upgraded AP clutch was used. The body looked similar to the standard Focus or to the ST170, although the RS featured unique front and rear bumper assemblies required for the wider wheel arches which accommodated the 65 mm (2.6 in) wider front track. A green starter button starts the engine. The instruments have a blue background and in place of the coolant temperature gauge, the RS was equipped with a boost pressure indicator (up to 1.5 bar ). The gear lever knob, handbrake lever, and pedals were all custom made by Sparco. At the 1999 Geneva International Motor Show Ford represent concept model named Focus Cosworth. It debuted in the Monte Carlo Rally with Colin McRae and Simon Jean-Joseph behind the wheels of the two cars. It was immediately on the pace, setting many fastest stage times, but the use of an illegal water pump meant that the two cars were excluded from the event. McRae gave the Focus its first win two events later on the Safari Rally Kenya finishing over 15 minutes ahead of the second placed Toyota of Didier Auriol. The car, with most parts redesigned from the ground up, featured a lighter body shell and a new aerodynamically enhanced front bumper and wing. Markko Martin drove the car to two world rally victories. The 2004 and 2005 Focus WRCs were evolutions based on the RS WRC 03. The Focus RS WRC 04 won three events with Martin at the wheel. By 2005, the car was no longer competitive and Ford had a winless season.Ford attempted to market the saloon in Europe as a mini- executive car by only offering it in the Ghia trim level, something that it had tried before with the Orion of the 1980s. It has since given up on this strategy, and has started selling lower specified versions of the saloon. This was the best-selling car in the world in 1999 through 2004. It was elected Car of the Year in 1999, ahead of GM's new Astra model. The Focus won the North American Car of the Year award for 2000.A convertible version was another notable omission that was rectified with the Mk2 Coupe-Cabriolet.In 2000, the Focus won Automobile magazine's Automobile of the Year and MotorWeek ' s Best Small Car.Archived from the original on October 1, 2011. Manufacturing in Argentina continued until 2008, and it was still on sale in Brazil until 2009.In Asia and Australasia, it replaced the Ford Laser. Whenever the shop recommends something that you don’t find in the car’s regular maintenance guidelines, automotive consumers should exercise caution. We have a complete companion article on our sister site about why shops recommend front in alignment services. Although the cleaning and adjusting brake service continues to lose its popularity, some old-school mechanics still recommend the procedure. In the case of a rear brake drum they remove the wheel and drum then clean out the brake dust. In some cases, they might make a slight adjustment to the self adjusting mechanism. The self adjusting mechanism does exactly that. As the brakes wear the star wheel adjuster ratchets to move the shoes outward automatically. Although it is possible for this mechanism to malfunction, it remains a rare occurrence. With that said, vehicles that suffer from this condition often have an emergency brake that doesn’t hold properly when applied. The dust generated from the friction material becomes a normally occurring and ongoing situation. Within a couple of hundred miles after a clean and adjusting of the brakes, they look the same way as prior to the service. Once again, I pulled out a bunch of owner’s manuals. I couldn’t find the recommendation for cleaning and adjusting brakes in the ones I checked. Let me tell you why I put it so far down on the list. There remains isolated situations when flushing the transmission fluid becomes a recommendation from the manufacturer. On older cars, stick to the recommendations posted by the vehicle manufacturer. In addition, some automobiles have replaceable transmission filters where as others do not. If an auto repair center invests in a transmission flushing machine they’ll be tempted to recommend the service on an automobile that doesn’t require it. Understanding Lithium Ion Battery Components They are being used They are being used more and more due to their energy density, lightweight, and the ability to be recharged. Eventually, the research was halted because of safety concerns. His work doubled the energy potential of the future battery. Lithium-ion batteries are used around the world today to help us communicate, work, study, travel, and store energy from renewable sources like wind and solar. A lithium-ion battery is comprised of one or more compartments that generate power. These compartments are called cells. Each cell has three main parts: a positive electrode, a negative electrode, and electrolyte chemicals in between them. It is typically made from lithium cobalt oxide or lithium phosphate. As the battery charges, the positive electrode releases some of its lithium ions. These ions move through the electrolyte to the negative electrode and stay there and the battery takes in energy to charge. This process creates the energy that powers the battery. They do not flow through the electrolyte but it does help insulate the barrier. The ions move through the electrolyte and the electrons move around the external circuit. If one stops, so does the other and you lose power. The electronic controller helps prevent overheating that can cause the batteries to explode. Traditional batteries can suffer from “memory effect” where they become harder to charge unless they were fully discharged first. They last 2 to 3 years but a lithium ion battery replacement is easy and affordable for consumers. They only lose about 5 of their charge and a traditional battery can lose up to 20. Compared to heavy-duty lead-acid batteries a lithium-ion battery is relatively light for the amount of energy it can store. They have a few flaws as well. These batteries can be extremely sensitive to heat. Heat can cause lithium-ion batteries to degrade much faster. Even with the electronic controller, there is still a chance that lithium-ion battery pack can fail and the battery will burst into flames. This is a relatively low maintenance battery which makes it more appealing. Follow these tips to make your batteries last longer. Look at the manufacturing date on the package when you purchase a lithium-ion battery to find one that was created recently. This will give you more charges. Charge your batteries frequently to get more life from them. Store the battery with only a 40 charge and in the refrigerator (not the freezer). Hopefully, this guide has shed some light on how a lithium-ion battery works and explained the main lithium-ion battery components. Here are 4 facts that you should consider before making a purchase. Ford recently fired CEO Mark Fields, in part because he was moving too slowly to fully incorporate electric cars into their lineup. If you are one of these people, here are 4 facts to consider before purchasing one. At some point in the near future, it will be seen as a financial liability to own anything other than an ecar. These are expected to only grow in number. You’ll also drive on lanes designed specifically for electric cars. They’ll also set up similar lanes on US highways. Another benefit to these vehicles is that they will lower American dependence on foreign sources of power. However, as these types of vehicles become more popular and cheaper to purchase, the insurance pricing should level out. We also can show you the best literature to learn more about car history. Make sure you look over this amazing resource. Is it getting tough to organize everything so that Is it getting tough to organize everything so that you deal with zero customer complaints? Our ideas combine what you may already use to store items with techniques you may have not considered before. Getting the opinions of the right people in your industry is also important. This will also make it easier for sales, repairs, and other jobs that will bring in more customers. The shelves may seem sturdy for now, but over time, you might notice them slowly giving out. The smaller tools go at the top of your shelves, and the bigger ones go at the bottom. The top part of your shelves should also be low enough for each person at your shop to reach. If there is space between the last shelf and the floor, that can also work. This will allow you to determine which items can fit together, thus saving you money on buying extra shelves. It’s even better if whatever you put them on can also move. This is also a financial decision because the quicker you can satisfy a customer, the more likely they are going to do business with you in the future. You can keep spare doors and tires in them and push them between work centers and storing areas. Bigger parts will require bigger toolboxes, as well as those with bigger and stronger wheels. If there’s enough room in the rolling box, you can always store them in the corner to save walks to the shelves. If you’re on a tight schedule, then it may be best to keep everything in one spot. The shelves should be spaced for objects of certain sizes for extra convenience. However, you can store tires and engines on the bottom shelf if the cars you’re working on are on the smaller side. Also, make sure that there is enough space between entrances and exits to prevent anything from getting knocked over. As far as warehouse racking goes, you should consider what similar professionals have done to arrange their tools. You can learn about the mistakes and corrections they made so that you can achieve perfect organization skills. This is especially true if you’re trying to run a shop that more advanced forms of auto technology You can also learn quick ways to access tools based on your projects. However, this may help you make more money down the line. It may be because their design doesn’t let them lay flat on one side, or they’re just too big for your space. Whether you own a big shop or a small one, this will decrease the chances of breaking your shelving or parts falling over during transportation.
