It looks like site has been updated. Purchased what I was told was a Ford 3550 backhoe about 7 months ago. Its old and just needed some care. New Holland dealer in Wharton, Texas helped me try and figure out what it was. They narrowed it to possible 1972 Ford 3550 or 4400 4500 can't remember which but they concluded more than not, that it was a 3550. I ran with it. I didn't need any major parts to get it going. I have the service manual for 1965-1972-covering 2000 series to 5550. Well an issue did come up which brings me back to a couple of months ago. I noticed the power was slowly leaving, in terms of moving forward and reverse. Front loader and backhoe work great. I noticed I couldnt get out of small ruts. After sitting for a while, the power would return. That happened for about a week. All fluids changed and fine. Starts up great. No knocking. Then I noticed even an ant hill was too much to climb. Low 1st gear is what I used to inch it to work area. R1 on Low gear was strongest. All of that being said. I joined tractor forum. Do pumps come and go when breaking or do you break right away. You guys concluded I lost a pump somewhere. That is fine. It rained much locally, so I couldnt open her up but didn't want to do it with out knowing what pump. Here is the rub. Nowhere can I find a pump that deals with transmission. All pump information directs me to external pump for lifts. Lifts are fine. The manual shows no pumps whatsoever. I have a brother who used to work on farm tractors but has now moved on to a much busier job, so his time is limited. He floated idea if it even had a pump, that maybe its a clutch run transmission. He may have dumbed it down for me, so not sure if that makes sense. He ran through manual to no avail. So now I'm wondering if I even have to right tractor I.D. I dug around and figure I would decipher it myself. First letter usually ABCD, etc. Now I'm new on decipher but that is what I have.I keep trying to post photos but errors keep occurring.I would appreciate all advice. Any help you guys can give is much appreciated. 1. Can I run a PTO on this model. Right now it has a backhoe on it, but I would like to take that off and run a bushhog for the property. 2. How can I determine the year and VIN number of the tractor? 3. Are the FEL and BH seperate, model numbers.You will find a lot of good info here. 1. The tractor may or may not be equipped with a PTO, a lot of industrial tractor were not because of the backhoe which tends to never be removed. 2. There may be a metallic tag on the underside of the hood. If not, there are three sets of alpha-numeric codes located on the implement mounting pad of the transmission just aft of the starter. Post that information here and someone will decode it for you.I will try and get those codes posted up.Do these numbers make sense to anyone. Transmission: 2F0 can't tell if there is another number HYD Lift: 2521A Rear Axle: 2E27B Above and to the left of Rear Axle is this number 2(E or F) 251 Above and to the right of that number is 2H09B. Right under the shifter is this number: C3H(N)N7006-D. Couldn't really tell if the third was an H or an N. Right in front and under the seat is the following number 9573-4033A. Under the seat on the right hand side is the following number H20.9.73 under that is C5 NN 4024Y under that is MH.In the mean time I bought a service manual disc off of ebay. Originally produced with a displacement of 221 cu in (3.6 L), it eventually increased to a maximum displacement of 351 cu in (5.8 L), but was most commonly sold with a displacement of 302 cu in (later marketed as 5.0 L), with engines of that displacement offered from 1968 until 2000. From the mid-1970s through the 1990s, the Ford Small Block engine was also marinized for use in smaller recreational boats.The 2001 Explorer SUV was the last North American installation of the engine, and Ford Australia used it through 2002 in their Falcon and Fairlane cars.Displacing 221 cu in (3.6 L), it was designed to save weight, using thin-wall casting with a block that does not extend below the centerline of the crankshaft. The engine uses a separate aluminum timing chain cover, which differentiates it from the later 335-series Cleveland engines that use an integrated timing cover. The valves are in-line and use straight six-bolt valve covers. Coolant is routed out of the block through the intake manifold.Two additional displacements were produced during the engine's history. A 351 cu in (5.8 L) model (stroked from the 302) was offered beginning in 1969 and continuing until 1996. The 351W (so identified to distinguish from the 335-series Cleveland 351C) uses a taller block than the other engines in the series to avoid excessively short connecting rods. And for a brief time in the early 1980s a version with a smaller bore diameter that displaced 255 cubic inches (4 l) was produced as Ford struggled with emissions and fuel economy.The first attempt mated a tunnel-port head to a 289 cu in block, but the displacement proved to be too small to deliver the desired power. The heads from the Boss 302 became the production heads on the 335-series Cleveland engines, which used the same bore spacing and head bolt configuration as the small block engines.The Modular 4.6 L OHC V8 debuted in the 1991 Lincoln Town Car, signaling the eventual demise of the OHV Ford Small Block. Through the rest of the decade, Ford gradually shifted V8 applications to the Modular engine, with the Mustang transitioning in 1996. Even as the small block neared the end of its life, development continued, with new cylinder heads introduced for the Ford Explorer in 1997.
